American Record Guide, May/June 2003
This is a great ensemble and a great collection of pieces. Anyone who cares about sacred music should purchase this.

Album Description
In the Jubilee year of 2000, Aguavá New Music performed a memorable concert of specially commissioned and recently composed music on sacred Judeo-Christian texts for solo voices and instruments at the Tempus Fugit Contemporary Music Festival of Tel Aviv. This CD compiles these masterpieces by the great Mexican composer Mario Lavista; the MacArthur award-winner John Eaton; the eminent Israeli composer Menachem Zur; and Aguavá's resident composer Cary Boyce. The compositions feature diverse chamber vocal and instrumental combinations demanding both passionate expressiveness and technical virtuosity. The composers, advocating very distinctive and different syles, are at the height of their powers in these works, surely among the most compelling modern vehicles of the great tradition of Western religious music.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary, Enlightening New Sacred Music.......2005-02-11

Mario La Vista's "Missa.. is an extraordinary mix of the antiquated and the new in choral sound. One is immediately thrust into another sound world that is totally captivating. Cary Boyce's reflective "By the Waters" has a tender richness that embraces the listener.
In his mass, John Eaton, ever the experimentalist, explores the voice and traditional instruments in unusual ways that sustain interest. Can this be a spiritual experience? Yes, in the sense that it uses the familiar (traditional instruments) in unfamiliar ways to take the listener out of this world. But don't expect to be made comfortable by it. If Eaton's mass is far out, Menachem Zur's Alleluia - Psalm 150 -- is even more so. Zur keeps the listener in the heavens,as it were, using the voice along with electronically generated sounds. This is sophisticated music for the adventurous listener! Beautifully delivered. Margaret M Barela
