5 out of 5 stars A generous choice.......2007-04-06

This inexpensive twofer mixes perhaps the best work from London's 10-CD box of Haydn's complete masses recorded during the 1960s. With sparkling solo and choral singing and playing that was among hte best of its era, this set will provide insight into Haydn performance for collectors that only know his music through modern period practice performers such as Gardiner and Hickox.

Old Haydn style is clearly on display in David Willcocks' 1962 Missa in tempori belli, or mass in time of war or "Nelson" mass celebrating Admiral Nelson's victory over Napoleon at the Nile. Four and one-hald decades later this is still among the best versions of this music ever recorded. Aside from "The Creation", Haydn hardly penned a better piece of vocal music. Willcocks probably does not have a better recording to his name.

Another magnificent departure from today's period performance practice is George Guest's "Paukenmesse" and the way he features the kettledrum, espcially in the closing pages. Compared to the Gardiner period version, where the big drum is used less often and to less advantage, this must be considered a full throated attack in keeping with the composer's wishes.

The one shortcoming of the set is it divides the Paukenmesse over two CDs. This aside, no one will be disappointed with this set unless they are so dogmatic they can't set aside modern practice to accept instrumental and choral work that set a standard for 30 years.

4 out of 5 stars Good Choice.......2006-08-14

I ordered this just to have Harmoniemesse but was happy to have the other pieces also. It's a nice variety of vocal arrangements. Recording is clear and chorus is good, sopranos sounding like boys choir. Ending of some phrases loses pitch sometimes but not enough to offend a sensetive ear.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious masterpieces, glorious recordings..........2000-12-26

Deeply moving recordings of Haydn's awesome choral masterpieces. The conducting and singing are both impeccable and powerful, and London's acoustics are great. The soprano in the Nelson mass sings like an angel, and the organ shines through well. It was one of the earliest recordings to use Haydn's actual orchestration. The Nelson mass is available on a 24 bit CD in the Decca Legends series along with a great Handel Coronation anthem with the "God Save the King" chorus. Now back to this set... I love the kettle drum "military" portion of the Agnus Dei in the Mass in Time of War. The organ is quite charming in the Little Organ Mass, and the Harmonienmasse is sublime. The Teresienmasse is not included though.

If you like Haydn's masses, don't miss the powerful The Seven Last Words of Christ(not to be confused with Haydn's string quartet set with the same title), its finale will carry you beyond this world. Haydn's TeDeum is also quite magnificent.

5 out of 5 stars A highly classical mass.......2007-02-14

I really like another reviewer's comment that when it came to his liturgical music, Hayden did not mess around with the almighty, and this work, to my ear, stands up to even the greatest masses of Mozart, approaching (if not quite reaching) the heights of J. S. Bach's great masses.
This is the first recording of the Nelson mass I have audited with a critical ear, and although other reviewers have noted noisome extraneous sounds on the ADD recording, they bother me not.

If I have any reservations about the recording at all, it's the fact that it mixes works by Hayden and Vivaldi, and I prefer CDs with all material from one composer, although the two masses do go well toghether, in spite of the 80 years and the continent of Europe which separate the composers. If you can get this vintage recording at a good discount, snap it up.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Classic Recording.......2006-03-13

Having been conducted by Sir David Willcocks several times, it is fun to listen to a recording he conducted in the 1960's! The singing, especially the blissful Janet Baker, is truly beautiful.

3 out of 5 stars nice compilation, but uneven.......2005-11-09

The value of the cd depends on what you are expecting. If you expect reasonable good performances of 3 great choral works of the XVIII century with 3 great mainstream (ie not period)orchestras (London Symphony, ASMIF and what was later called English chamber orchestra) together with one of the most famous choirs in the world (King's college), look no further. You have to buy at least 3 CDs to find the mass, the gloria and the anthem. All of them are good, at least.
But if you want to find almost reference performances, I am sorry to tell you they are not here, at least in the three works.
Let's begin with Haydn. The title reason of this CD. What a wonderfull work the Nelson mass is ! Here presented with its original scoring for the first time. I love "HIP" performances so this may sound old fashioned sometimes but is so warm and sounds so beautifull that I am inclined to put it as referece without hesitation. "Period" approaches may be found elsewere but trust me, this excellent version remains at the top. If you want to have a great nelson and a t the same time you want to have those famous works (gloria, Zadok) or if you want to have simply a truly persuasive nelson, look no further.
Alas, Vivaldi and Handel are not so great. Yes, they are quite good performances on the whole, but if you are not so demanding.
The gloria is uneven. Some numbers are crisp, but not others (eg last alto solo, quite boring). The choir I feel does not project their voices in a touching way (as can do a modern baroque choir), sometimes sounds a bit plain, at least for my taste. Janet baker is not michael chance or another alto specialist in baroque singing but her artistry is beyond question: her refined singing has a class of its own.But ...what the hell is doing that awfull vibratoish soprano!!!!! For me, she would never be allowed to sing baroque repertoire !!!! that soprano is the reference of how NOT to sing Baroque (and oboe soloist is frankly old fashioned).
Handel begins with quite good speed, fluid enough. The final is majestic, as it should. But in the transition from the begginning to the end, opulent and powerfull as it shouls, the performance shows a bit four square, a bit slow. Surely can be better sang elsewere.
To sum up, Nelson mass can be readily recommended. For the other works, try before buying if you may live with this 2 old fashioned readings of these 2 beloved choral works.

4 out of 5 stars Good but not the best.......2005-06-23

I was looking for a Nelson Mass, so a friend gave me this one. The soprano is good, but I sometimes find her voice a little bit waving. The bass is really a bariton with a dark voice.
The problem is that it's recorded in ADD format, so there's lot of noise.

If you're going to buy a Nelson Mass... better buy....
Haydn: Missa in Angustiis "Nelson Mass" - Te Deum / Lott, Watkinson, M. Davies, Wilson-Johnson; Pinnock

5 out of 5 stars Four decades of excellence.......2004-04-24

This magnificent Haydn mass was recorded when period performance was still a glint in the eye of authenticists, a half-dozen years before Harnoncourt's original embarassment with Bach's Brandenburg concertos. David Willcocks was among a handful of conductors who exhibited temperament, moderation and drama to record the Haydn masses in the 1950s and 1960s in recordings that still have not been surpassed.

Haydn was a great old man, full of fun and humor, not above poking fun at himself, his employers and his society. But one thing he did not poke fun at was God and his relationship with the Almighty. While this mass is technically about Nelson's victory at the Nile, it is clear the driving force behind the drama was Father Superior.

For this reason, the ultra-dramatic, almost cinematic, approach used by Bernstein and Pinnock, while effective, is inappropriate. They overflow with drama but lack dignity. Christian faith is nowhere to be found, neither is self-denial in the face of glory.

Willcocks' singers are wonderful. I have some quibbles with the Latin pronunciation but his singers are miles ahead of the competitors including more recent recordings by Gardiner and Hickox.

The period performance crowd has generally done a nice job with Haydn but none project his temperament as well as Wilcocks, Simon Preston and George Guest, who together recorded all the great Haydn masses in a 10-disk set London 448518). Some of the better performances -- the Nelson, Harmony, Kettledrum and little organ masses, among others -- are in a London twofer you can buy for a very modest cost (ASIN: B0000041MA).

5 out of 5 stars Lord Nelson Mass review.......2007-02-08

Good quality - enjoyed listening to this. Nice lively tempi and clarity

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, glorious paean to victory.......2003-08-23

Composed to celebrate Horatio Nelson's victory over Napoleon's fleet at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, this wonderful Mass is one of Haydn's greatest works -- one which places him squarely beside Mozart and Beethoven as a giant of his time.

I grew up with Bernstein's monumental, superb version of the Nelson Mass, which of course featured the full-scale New York Philharmonic. So it took me a while to adjust to Pinnock's relatively small orchestra using the scale and instruments of the Classical period.

That said, this is an incredibly thrilling disc, with terrific performances from all concerned, and is undoubtedly THE Nelson Mass to acquire and enjoy repeatedly.

Trevor Pinnock surely is one of the greatest living conductors -- everything he touches turns to gold. Even someone like me, who primarily is devoted to the sound world of Richard Strauss, Hector Berlioz and the titanic Wagner, acknowledges his immense talent and only wishes that his range extended beyond the Baroque and Classical into the Romantic and post-Romantic repertoire.

But I won't quibble with what he already has given us -- not a bit!

If you love Haydn or great choral music, buy this CD NOW.

5 out of 5 stars One of Haydn's best.......2001-12-26

This is a superb performance of the Nelsonmesse. The soloists are talented and expressive, and the choir sings with passion and precision. One can hear Haydn's understanding of the war in relation to Austria's position, but with his hope for ultimate victory. The "dona nobis pacem" is one of Haydn's best, matched by the "dona nobis pacem" of the Missa in tempore belli. The performance exploits many of the characteristics of Haydn's music that no doubt influenced Beethoven...beginning with the powerful declamatory motive of the Kyrie.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful CD........2001-04-13

I like this record very much. I think is a good version of the Nelson Mass with very good msicians, like Trevor Pinnock; for me, one of the bests conductors for barroque music. The singers are perfect, the orchestra too. But, I think that the choir needs more bright because we can't listening to it in some parts of the CD. Moreover, I will put a 10 to this beautiful CD.

5 out of 5 stars A stunning performance for a spectacular work........2001-03-29

From its omnious introduction to the raw emotional thrill at the openeing of the Gloria one is always amazed at how extraordinary is this piece of music, and how exquisitely powerful is its rendering by Mr. Pinnock. The variety of moods and musical constructs, the emotional power, the refined craft of Haydn, his zest for life, his faith, it is all there. Let us not doubt why this is perhaps the most "famous" of Haydn's mass. To this listener, this mass "in angustiis" together with the Creation and the London Symphonies represent the summits of Haydn's work. A must have recording, or one of the desert island recording that a co-reviewer suggested. To be objective, I was not as impressed with the "te deum", but then again, I cannot think of any opus that would not have suffered from trailing this excellent and excellently performed mass.

3 out of 5 stars the grand experience wears thin.......2006-06-22

I've listened to these particular performances of Haydns masses many times, at first I loved it. The masses sound grand and while it's fun at first it gets old. Many of the masses just sound the same, grand with trumpets, drums, yelling and lots of energy. There is not very many beautiful moments that you hear in other masses by other composers. Also, there is just too many weird surprises and changes in the music, one moment it will sound beautiful then there is a sudden change and it sounds grand and you lose the beatiful melody forever. I don't think it's the performers fault but the composers. I have other performances of music by Gardiner and they're good. I guess you will enjoy this better if you just take it one mass at a time, too much will just wear you out.

If you're just looking for lots of energy and a grand experiance you will like this. If you want something beautiful stay away, you're better off just buying a couple of the masses. Now you have another opinion.

5 out of 5 stars In response to previous reviewer..........2006-03-26

Your ideas concerning the pronunciation of the latin refer to the German pronunciation of the text. Gardiner chose to utilize the Italianate pronunciation, which is certainly not "incorrect." The Italianate pronunciation is typically used in the Roman Catholic Mass, and these are most certainly Masses. Just wanted to clear that up.
In terms of the recording, I too shared some reservations, as I've been enamoured with Gardiner's rendition of the Verdi Requiem (though I think Abbado, on EMI, is more intense, and his soloists are superb), and extremely disappointed with his "performance" of Bach's St. Matthew Passion (that one seemed like he really had to use the bathroom, and wanted to wrap things up ASAP). However, this is quite a fine recording. The soloists are excellent, tempi are nice and brisk (though not rushed, as has often been the case in other Gardiner recordings), and it's great to have these six wonderful Masses together in one set. Though Bach's B minor Mass is THE supreme liturgical work, these Haydn creations are nothing short of extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Haydn for the new millennium.......2004-11-18

I am not an unabashed supporter of John Gardiner and his period style with choral music from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods. I enjoyed his versions of the Beethoven "Missa Solemnis" and Verdi "Requiem Mass" but did not enjoy his traversal of the Bach cantatas or Haydn's "Creation". This split decision left me wondering if purchasing this set would be wise.

Turns out it was very wise, indeed, for these are startlingly good performances of Haydn's "Big Six" masses -- the Harmony, Helig, Nelson, Creation, Theresa and Pauken (or kettledrum) masses. In these three disks, Gardiner, a group of now well-known soloists, the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists acquit themselves well across the board.

There is no mention in the notes or on the sleeve whether or not the soloists use period inmstruments. The strings sound good, not wiry as is often the case with period instruments. The singers consistently use vibrato.

The English notes to this set describe the history of creation of each mass and describe their musical progressions. There are no notes about the performers and arty pictures of Gardiner grace the front panel of cover of the booklet.

I think it is reasonable to call this a new millennium update of the famous Decca-London set from the 1960s by performers including Simon Preston and George Guest. Spiritually, the newer set is a natural upgrade informed by period style -- if not always performed in same -- and produced in 21st century DDD sound. The singers and orchestral members all perform wonderfully and Gardiner's direction is always appropriate with that little bit of reserve always apparent that separates the temperament of Haydn from that of Beethoven.

While there is no question this is a five star offering, I nevertheless have a few minor quibbles with it. The recordings are tastefully produced in modern natural style, which places the singers and chorus equidistant. I would have appreciated a bit more forward placement for the singers.

In addition, I would argue that the pronunciation of the Latin words suscipe and excelsis are incorrect. There are several ways to say suscipe and Gardiner apparently has chosen su-she-pay. I would argue su-see-pay is correct. The choristers and solosits regularly say eck-shell-sis instead of the correct eck-sell-sis, also. Finally, I would have appreciated a bit more embellishment of the timpani in the closing pages of the "kettledrum" mass. It is, after all, named after the instrument!

But these are minor reservations in a set that has all the qualities to be a classic for this age and hold steadfast in the top rung of Haydn masses for another quarter-century. Compared to the version I have heard by Richard Hickox, I would say this set is clearly superior in all ways. I heartily recommend this nicely-priced three disk set to anyone that wants to discover -- or rediscover -- the glories of Haydn's late masses.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Canadian Brass is COOL!.......2007-04-11

Brass virtuosos offer familiar pieces in refreshing way. Great listening!

4 out of 5 stars Bold and Brassy.......2006-05-10

You either like the sound of brass instruments or you don't. I do. I especially like them in the hands of competent musicians playing tunes I like (mostly), I like this album.

It's a hodgepodge of mostly very short pieces and not all of them are "classical" although that is the main thrust of the work. Intermixed with Handel's MUSIC FROM THE ROYAL FIREWORKS and Ravel's BOLERO you will find such pieces as the CAN-CAN or GLOWWORM. It's all very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars The Comical Yet Excellent Recording.......2004-09-15

This CD absolutely shows the absolute talent in the absolute Canadian Brass. These short little songs might be abused, but they showed the great skills the players had. The tuba was heard clearly in one of the song's end. Trombone had a lot of solo that showed hard technique, and the trumpets are surprisingly outstanding! The French horn might not be heard quite easily, but it was played fantastically good.
Great recording for sure, all famous songs, and some great classical ballads.

4 out of 5 stars Canadian Brass Strikes Again!.......2000-06-01

This is a fun cd to listen to. The recording is very clear and crisp, each instrument shines. Also, the cover photo is comical. I have several other Canadian Brass recordings and I think they are all interesting. A truly talented band of skillful musicians.

5 out of 5 stars great!.......1999-08-31

This is a truly splendid CD. Each song is wonderfully played and Arranged. In turkish rondo, the french horn player and the trumpets do a great job. And in Sarbande by Handel, and Bolero by Ravel, htey do even better! Two big thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but watch your eardrums..........2000-02-25

This is a light-hearted and crisp performance of these pieces. Granted this music is not terribly complicated; it often seems, if not predictable, then instantly familiar and occasionally schmaltzy. We can probably forgive Haydn this, as he wrote some of these pieces when he was only 12! The soloists are smooth and not pushy and the choir's diction and timing are razor sharp. They positively bounce and soar through the music, and this is great stuff to crank up on your car stereo (watch your speed though, as you are bound to get carried away [this is the voice of experience talking]).

There are a few reasons why I can't give this recording 5 stars. For some unnecessary reason the Kyrie in the Grosse Orgelmesse moves at the speed of treacle. Perhaps it is slow so as to counteract the almost manic pace of other pieces, but I honestly thought my CD player had something wrong with it. This, however, is a personal quibble of mine and if you've never heard anther recording of this music, this one'll probably not annoy you.

My other quarrel is with the balance within the choir and between the choir and orchestra. At times, you can hardly distinguish the singers from the players; everything sounds pleasant, but indistinct. Then, out of nowhere, the trebels erupt, over-power every other voice, and all you can hear are the soprano line, violins and timpani. I suppose this is to be expected in a choir with 16 trebels and 12 everyone elses, but this choir is perfectly capable of sounding balanced both within itself and with the orchestra, as it does on much of this recording. My eardrums and my speakers are not happy with these intermittent attacks. All this aside, I do still recommend this CD. I hope it provides you hours of listening pleasure (and not any speeding tickets).

Lord Nelson was a hero not just to the British but to all Europeans who felt tyrannized by Napoleon. The Hungarian Radio and Television Chorus successfully capture the euphoric mood that prevailed at the premiere of Haydn's Mass for Anguished Times, which took place in September 1800 just as word arrived of Nelson's victory at Aboukir Bay. The work has been the Nelson Mass ever since. Although they sing with robust joyfulness, the chorus's sound is tempered by occasional errant consonants, and the singers pronounce their Latin with soft c's and hard g's, which makes them sound old-fashioned. The modern-instrument Nikolaus Esterházy Sinfonia is arrestingly stern, the strings vibrant, the timps and trumpets prompt, and the organ quite cathedralish for a studio recording. As if she's on fire, whiplash soprano Viktoria Loukianetz shoots out of the chorus to a top B-flat in the Kyrie, but she powers through the famous Gloria, not altogether sensitively. The other soloists tend to pull down at the pitch, so they're a disappointment. Completing the disc is the Little Organ Mass, a simple choral setting dating from 1777--its longest movement is the Benedictus, which is usually the shortest. It is scored for soprano solo and twisting organ obbligato, and in this piece Loukianetz redeems herself to a degree. --Rick Jones

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price.......2005-12-16

This is a very good recording. Certainly, it's worth much more than its price. It's on a much higher level than the average Naxos CDs. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good at the price.......2000-04-19

Just before reviewing the Naxos release of Haydn's (8.55416), I had to listen for review purposes to "Jesus Christ Superstar"! Believe me, the Haydn was like a gentle salve on raw skin. I always love to play the opening Kyrie from Haydn's "Mass in Time of War" in conjunction with the corresponding movement from the Nelson piece to show how wonderfully the same words could be set to music that expresses the feelings of a particular group of people caught up in the events of particular time in history (the Napoleonic Wars), and then to see how universal it all is to anyone who has turned to the Church or to the Arts for consolation in times of need.

Of course a comparison of the Hungarian Radio and Television Chorus and the Nicolaus Esterhazy Sinfonia under Bela Drahos with the older but still powerful recordings under the baton of Bernstein and other conductors well might leave this recording a little behind! But on a slightly smaller scale and taken (as I have to say for so many recordings) on its own terms, this is a decent interpretation with very good sound and a price that can't be beat.

On what might be a negative note, I somehow find the soprano (Viktoria Loukianetz) not quite blending in with her fellow soloists. Perhaps it is the mike placement. Would someone care to comment on that? Also, I think the order of the works should have been switched as I find the "Little Organ Mass" a bit anticlimactic after the more powerful offering.
