Pavel Steidl is a tremendous virtuoso, and he is no slouch here. The caprices are quick and crisp, an excellent reading captured by naxos quality production. Recorded on a 19th century guitar with gut strings, this cd is often cited as one of the finest period guitar discs in the catalogue.

This is nifty disc for the student guitarist studying Legnani's music, but Legnani was a Pagannini wannabe and these pieces should be played as such, with all the virtuosity possible to muster. If you want to really hear these pieces played do yourself a favor and buy Mateo Mela's recording "Italian Virtuosos of the 19th Century" which features many of the 36 caprices. I've never heard them played better and I may never hear them played better. Mela's playing is so clean and fluid. A true artist worthy of the bravura of these Caprices.

This CD gets 3 stars just for putting it all together on one disc. The playing is decent, like I said, but nothing blew my hair back like Mr. Mela's disc.
