The great Yo-Yo Ma has recently (in addition to his world music explorations) moved to the baroque cello, a so-called period instrument, and his transition has been remarkably smooth. He is indeed a musical polyglot, and this CD finds him solidly in the heart of the Baroque period, with music by Vivaldi. In addition to three concerti the composer wrote for cello, there are some fascinating transcriptions. The Largo violin solo from the "Winter" concerto of the Four Seasons is here beautifully played on cello, its darker tone added substituting gravity for chill in the wintry landscape. A concerto originally for viola d'amore, lute and strings has been transformed into one for cello, organ, strings and continuo, with Baroque expert Ton Koopman as transposer and organist (and sympathetic, energetic conductor throughout). And oddest of all, Koopman has created cello solos out of arias (one of which is helped by a perky bassoon) originally composed for female voice from a couple of operas, the oratorio Juditha Triumphans, and the familiar "Laudamus te" from the famous "Gloria." Leave it to these musicians to re-invent Vivaldi with respect and a clear ear for musical values--not to mention sheer entertainment and a forward propulsion which makes it all so invigorating. --Robert Levine

I often play European-classical music during massage treatments. My clients love hearing this CD again and again!
Super Enjoyable.......2007-01-03
Very nice. If you're a novice to classical, you'll really enjoy this CD. Perfect for a Sunday morning coffee or rainy afternoon.
Absolutely Amazing.......2006-01-27
I love this album from beginning to end. RV 531 will blow your socks off, especially the first and third movements! Yo-Yo and Ton have done it again, thank you for such a wonderful record. You will not be disappointed with this purchase.
You mouth open in Awe........2005-06-15
This album is complete. My mouth was open in Awe when I heard Allegro off this album, it's no.1 on this album. I couldn't stop picturing them all playing this. The piece was astouding! The dynamics, accents, just everything! I don't know what else to say about this album!
Hard to believe!.......2005-04-23
This album is just exquisite... At times there are no words to describe the depth and beauty -- his incredible bow control, intensity and passion, impeccable pitch, sense of dynamic movement... It's all there! The first time I heard "Largo" from Winter I had to hold my breath -- it is such a dazzling rendition! I say that this album deserves twice as many ears as there are people in the world today!

Mezzo Cecilia Bartoli could easily rest on her laurels as one of today's most charismatic, characterful singers for her lively portrayals of Mozart and Rossini heroines. But it's been particularly exciting to observe her growth as an artist in exploring the exuberant world of baroque opera, with its range of pyrotechnic demands--both vocal and emotional. Bartoli's show-stopping virtuosity in a Vivaldi aria from her Live in Italy recital gave a tantalizing sample of her finesse in that style. For The Vivaldi Album, Bartoli conducted extensive research into the composer's manuscripts, (a documentary tracing her quest is planned for subsequent international screening). Although he's best known for his concertos--in typically baroque fashion, two of the arias in fact recycle material from The Four Seasons--Vivaldi was a ferociously prolific composer of operas for the cutting-edge theaters of his time, and the arias gathered here demonstrate the word-painting magic of his music, from the sylvan setting of dueting flageolets in "Di due rai languire costante" to the storm-tossed passions of "Anch'il mar par che sommerga," where Bartoli spins out ripples of rapid-fire coloratura with a gravity-defying accuracy that will leave your head spinning. In addition to many such examples of vocal acrobatics, Bartoli brings exquisite nuance and limpid tone to the delicate echo effects of "Zeffiretti, che sussurrate," and there's no better test for the remarkable flexibility of her range--full and dusky at the bottom and thrilling at the top--than the huge intervallic leaps of "Dopo un'orrida procella." With her naturally large voice, Bartoli can at times tend to histrionic excess (in the recitative to the short aria from "L'Orlando finto pazzo"), but the expressive color of her phrasing is wonderfully matched throughout by the Giardino Armonico's lively panache. All power to Bartoli in her goal of reviving this neglected aspect of Vivaldi's output. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Cecilia Bartoli brings Baroque music to life.......2005-08-24
This album is so good that it has converted me to liking Vivaldi! I'm a fan of other Baroque composers such as Bach, Telemann, Couperin and Handel but had never really appreciated Vivaldi until I heard this album. Cecilia's technical experise and her intense interpretation makes this album a delight to listen to. She brings Vivaldi's arias to life as I've heard no other performer manage to do so. A brilliant album that I listen to again and again.
A Revelation.......2003-11-05
I was amazed with this album of super fine music. I had known all my life that Vivaldi wrote tons of operas, but finding them, or the scores of them, was nearly impossible. In time I found a few, and was I ever amazed and disappointed. The published scores that were available were what was common practice of that time: there were the vocal lines and a figured bass and nothing more. There were no indications of orchestration. Even with that little bit, I was shocked with the intensity and complexity of this vocal writing. This man knew how to write for the voice. Until singers are willing to research his works, we, the public, will know him for a very orchestra suites and nothing more. The result will be a very stilted view of what the man had to offer.
Now getting to the performance by Bartoli. She really loves this music, as you can tell. Yes, she is mannered in some of the things she does, but that is her way of seeing the music. Her technical skills are amazing, and her interpretations (the "drama" behind the music) is just as intense. Some think Bartoli has a strong voice. Actually, her voice is very small, if you have heard her in performance (they weren't even sure she would be heard when she sang at the Met), and it has a very delicate quality, even when being "brash." Recordings give you the impression she has a much larger sound than she does, but that is because small voices record truer and better than large ones (the industry still can't capture large voices at all). However, even with a small voice, in performance she is breathtaking. She makes the music live. She has weird mannerisms one sees that to American trained singers are completely unacceptable (weird facial expressions, strange things done with he mouth and teeth, head bobbing, etc), but that has never distracted from her overall intensity. Yes, she is intense. You are literally taken away with her interpretation, and her skills. Interestingly, she is more famous in music circles for her cancelations (she cancels more performances in a year than she actually sings). I love this recording, not only because of the music, but because I have seen her sing some of this music live. She really LIVES what she sings, and that comes across in this recording.
A special note: in the little booklet that comes with the recording, Bartoli herself writes her impressions of this music. It is extremely insightful. Whether you like her or not, you have to admire the work she has done to make this music live and be as authentic in interpretation as she can. It is her love of this music that has caused her to record this album. I am thankful she did, for now, I can take those old scores I have and get a better understanding of what the composer was doing. Would that more singers would explore new/old works, and I think it would be far more interesting to have them write their impressions of the music they are singing than the standard academic essays we must read. Reading about how she came to this music, in her own words, gave a different dimension to listening. Now I was listening to see if she was successful in communicating what she felt this music had to offer. SHE WAS.
The best work of Cecilia Bartoli.......2003-08-15
This is simply the best work of Cecilia Bartoli. Her voice is a delicatessen and Il Giardino Armonico sounds very very well. I think that I don't need to say anymore. Simply: BUY IT!!
The art of singing, still with us.......2003-02-09
Even if you disdain Vivaldi in the Stravinsky way, do yourself
a favor, and get this record. Music hidden in some obscure
library for centuries, brought to pulsating life by a minor
voice, here used with passion and artistry reminding one of
vocal artists of the past. An enriching experience for anyone
enjoying the art of singing.
Great music, but disappointment.......2002-10-01
I thoroughly enjoy classical music but found this cd to be a disappointment by a heavy vocal performance. It was shocking to hear the heaviness and darkness in Cecilia's voice, whom I had remembered to be lighter and more playful. My only good thought about this cd is "At least it was a gift" because if I had actually purchased it I would be thoroughly disgusted.

Customer Reviews:
This CD Set is Overflowing with Fine Music.......2006-08-31
This CD was released in 2002 and I find it hard to believe no one has reviewed it before now. I've just finished listening to it for the first time and was stuck by the elegance and gracefulnes of the music. I suppose that's why we love Baroque music so much. It is among the most refined music ever written equaling, if not surpassing, the Classical age. And Alan Curtis is conducting his Il Complesso Barocco so that should tip would-be-listeners off right away that it will be a quality product. I mean he's won three awards since 2002 for his interpretations of Handel operas. But back to Il Giustino. For what a layman's opinion is worth the singing on these two CDs is superb and the constuction and performance of the arias is complex without being inaccessaible. What I mean is the music is wonderfully inventive, constantly opening new vistas of sound and then ingeniously resolving them. The recitatives are thankfully brief. In short your ears will tingle with delight for quite a while after you've finished this opera. And I rarely say that upon only one listening. I can't wait till my second time and third and so on! Don't hesitate. Support baroque opera and treat yourself at the same time!!
P.S. Part of the opera was performed live on October 8, 2001 in Rotterdam and part in the studio the next day. Yet the acoustics in the opera house are so great you won't be able to tell which part is which!

colleratura as they should be: not just a gimmick ...........2006-05-03
This is a very nice CD for people wanting to get familiar with the castrato sound and with the famous fire work colleratura Baroque in general and Vivaldi in particular is known for.
THe most heard of criticism is that the sopranisto (or counter tenor for that matter) cannot compete with the (natural) skills /agility of -most referred to- mezzo soprano's. People tend to prove their point with pointing to the griselda aria and comparing it to most notedly the version of Cecilia Bartoli. Yes Brtoli has more speed, but is actually performing the almost same collaratura over and over again. Manzotti proves it to be more than just a neat trick and actually uses different collaratura's with different colors and different expressions. Thus making it very exciting to listen to.
The only minus is that sound of the orchestra is not very pronounciated (sorry of that is not correct english).. not like eg Fabio Bondi would do it :-) But overall a hugely enjoyable record with great singing
An interesting interpretation ..........2004-08-04
The Italian sopranist Angelo Manzotti's recitals in the past have often been characterised by a wish to show off his voice with inappropriate cadenzas, as well as questionable ornamentation, whilst claiming to be trying to show the best of baroque bel canto technique. This recital is no exception, consisting of 10 arias from different Vivaldi operas, many of them only now being recorded fully for the first time. So, he is to be commended for bringing some gems to notice, though others, notably Cecilia Bartoli and Marilyn Horne have already recorded one or two (Nel profundo cieco mondo, and agitate da due venti come to mind), and sung them better.
Manzotti's voice has a huge range, as befits a singer whose previous records have included tributes to Farinelli and the castrati who sang for Handel, but it does not always have accuracy of intonation nor pitch. The integration of the registers is also lacking, and so his voice sounds curiously disjointed. Listeners who want to hear a quality sopranist at work would be better advised to try out Philippe Jaroussky or Randal Wong.
The sound is ok on this TACTUS release, as is the accompaniment from the Bologna Baroque Orchestra, though a more defined bass line might be appreciated. There are a number of short orchestral movements from Teuzzone and Il Tamerlano that fill in what is a generous length CD at 75 minutes. Releases such as this one are to be encouraged until Vivaldi's operas receive the sort of acclaim that has recently been the case with Handel.

Kiri's finest..........2002-04-18
Well, although I've been a Kiri fan for some years, I haven't heard everything she's done. But from a pretty nice Kiri Te Kanawa personal collection, this has been my favorite since the day I first bought it. Kiri's voice has long been one of the most beautiful in the world of opera, but here she just 'cuts loose' (to use a very non-purist term) and she's never been better. Her voice is deeply sensual as well as flawless, easily her greatest performance from what I've heard. I'm glad this exceptional work is available as an import. Anyone who considers themselves a Kiri fan absolutely must have "The Sorceress".
Kiri's finest.......2001-11-01
I should start this review by saying that I am not a big fan of Kiri Te Kanawa. It's not her singing that I object to, but what she usually sings - I'm not very keen on Verdi, Puccini and Rossini. Having said that, Handel is one of my favourite composers and Christopher Hogwood is a genius; and I have to admit that Kiri's performance in this CD is absolutely brilliant.
The instrumental tracks have all the strength and vitality that you'd expect from Handel/Hogwood, and the vocal tracks have the added bonus of Kiri's heartfelt and moving interpretation. My personal favourites are: Laschia qu'io pianga from Rinaldo, and V'adoro pupile and Piangeró las sorte mia both from Giulio Cesare. And the Academy of Ancient Music are as wonderful as ever.
This is a must have!
Handel.......2001-08-28
It's a shame that this is not currently available. It's a wonderful collection of Handel arias for Soprano. While I usually find Handel a bit on the boring side, this is really an entertaining collection. There is quite a bit of instrumental music, aside from the arias, which is wonderfully done. Kiri brings her usual gorgeous voice to the recording. She also does a nice job of interpretation, something she often lacks unfortunately. Highly recommended!

Great powerfull revival of Eighteenth hundred opera arias........1998-11-24
I recomend this CD to everyone who loves opera. The performance of Kowalski is realy impressing with power on his voice and the perfect use of vibrato and coloratura. Handel and Mozart are always a joy to be listened but sung by this singer is realy something you should not miss. I was completly new in opera this record and Kowalski's Orfeo and Euridice have made me an opera lover of many other authors and styles. Thank you Kowalsky, If you ever read this i wish you consider singing in the Teatro Real of Madrid recently restored; maybe Mitridate Re di Ponto from Mozart?

some glorious Handel singing!.......2000-01-13
This CD has the greatest recorded performance of "Venti Turbini" and "Al Lampo Dell' Armi." James Bowman's virtuosity is quite exciting, and the orchestra playing sounds splenbid and authentic. There are parts of this recording that are a little less inspired, but still, it's very hard to find a better album of Handel's opera arias. It's a must have for all Handel devotees and should be strongly recommended to anyone interested in Baroque operas.
Also try James Bowman's "English Arias," which contains some gorgeous music from Handel's oratorios.
I also recommend the original soundtrack of "Farinelli," which has some great tracks of Handel and Hasse, etc.

Giustino <> Giustiniano.......2004-12-20
Velardi does not perform it badly, some singers are tired and tiresome, hovering voices, sometimes howling, in the most beautiful pieces.
However, nobody understands if somebody decides to publish an opera well longer than Götterdämmerung, why does not care with the cover design: we see Iustinian instead of Iustin, the uncle of the former. However, Iustin's portrait would have been also available.

Exceedingly Easy to Appreciate.......2007-01-11
This must be one of Handel's best. Every number is simply delightful. This is also one of Handel's most accessible opera seria plots. Absolutely charming, easy to follow, and exquisitely performed. Chance just musters the bravura necessary for the primo role of Giustino and Minter just convinces us of his perfidious villainy as Amanzio, however they do both in fact pull it off well enough that the recording deserves a five star rating. Every role is given ample opportunity to show off in the score and there aren't any disappointments here. The duo of Arianna and Anastasio performed by Roeschmann and Kotoski respectively are especially lovely with some very exciting arie between the two of them. Well chosen tempi and perfectly led accompaniments, McGegan is an expert Handelian, and this recording has a very exciting close atmosphere that showcases him and the Freiburger Barockorchester. I have enjoyed this recording for many years and will enthusiastically continue to do so. The cover art (portrayal of some famous castrato) is also remarkable.
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-05
The story of a farm boy called by the Gods to save the maiden in distress; that's the story. This opera has been described as having a "cartoon-adventure" plot in the style of an old-fashioned fairy tale. For example when we first meet our hero Guistino (Michael Chance) he is at the plough and we hear the music of the trilling flute almost as if it were a scene from a Disney woodland cartoon; absolutely charming! Not only do we have Chance in this opera , we also are gifted with the tenor voice of Mark Padmore who portrays Vitaliano the brave and hot-tempered soldier who sings a wonderful aria of revenge :"Il piacer della vendetta". Drew Minter another countertenor has never been one of my favorite singers and he gets a bit nasal in his singing in this opera, but he presents a good dramatic performance, and we can ignore the nasality (I think).Michael Chance gives his usual PERFECT performance singing his many arias beautifully and is always in the role.Combine all this with some incredibly lovely Handelian melodies and you have maximum listening pleasure. I have had this recording for several years and play it frequently for the joy contained therein!!!
A neglected Handelian operatic masterwork.......1999-09-18
Giustino is not one of Handel's well-known operas (if such a thing exists) and the quality of the whole conveyed by this exemplary recording from Nicholas McGeegan makes me wonder why. It is dramatically coherent and structurally sound. Perhaps the fairy tale-like elements detract from the seriousness of this opera seria. I am a true admirer of McGeegan's interpretations of Handelian opera and I think this is one of his finest recordings of the ouvre. The one thing I do not particularly care for in this recording is the casting of Dawn Kotoski as the soprano male role of Anastasio. While Ms. Kotoski is undoubtedly a fine soprano, I find her a bit overpowering at times, especially considering the role of Anastasio was originally characterized by a soprano castrato (yes it's true, I've done my research). You'll notice, however, that my one complaint has not caused me to give this recording a less-than-outstanding review--I still give it five stars. This recording was the first Handelian opera I listened to in full and it prepared me for many more of his fine works. It has my top recommendation and I am sure any lover of Handel's music will enjoy it, no matter how many of Handel's operas he has listened to.
Not a moment of disappointment!.......1999-03-07
This was the opera that opened my ears to Handel. Built on an entertaining, although slightly disjointed plot, and full of wonderful melodies, this opera kept me spellbound for almost three hours, my eyes following the libretto. The recording was made following live performances at the Handel Festival in Gottingen; and the stage experiences obviously added to the depth of the performers' characterization of the music. The cast if outstanding. Michael Chance's singing as Giustino is expressive and consistent. Dorothea Roschmann as Arianna confirms her fame as one of the fastest-ascending soprano stars in baroque opera. Drew Minter makes an appropriately sly Amanzio. Mark Padmore shows off his dramatic skills and a gorgeous silky tenor voice in the role of the hot-tempered Vitaliano. The rest of the cast deserve as much praise. I would say that this is one of Handel's best operas, and definitely presented here at the level that will be hard to beat. Chance and Padmore both also appeared, among others, in a wonderful recording of Handel's oratorio Esther, under Christophers.

Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli could easily rest on her laurels as one of today's most charismatic, characterful singers for her lively portrayals of Mozart and Rossini heroines. For The Vivaldi Album (originally released in 1999), Bartoli conducted extensive research into the composer's manuscripts (a documentary tracing her quest has been made).
Although he's best known for his concertos--in typically Baroque fashion, two of the arias here, in fact, recycle material from The Four Seasons--Antonio Vivaldi was a ferociously prolific composer of operas for the cutting-edge theaters of his time, and the arias gathered here demonstrate the word-painting magic of his music, from the sylvan setting of dueting flageolets in "Di due rai languire costante" to the storm-tossed passions of "Anch'il mar par che sommerga," where Bartoli spins out ripples of rapid-fire coloratura with a gravity-defying accuracy that will leave your head spinning. In addition to many such examples of vocal acrobatics, Bartoli brings exquisite nuance and limpid tone to the delicate echo effects of "Zeffiretti, che sussurrate," and there's no better test for the remarkable flexibility of her range--full and dusky at the bottom and thrilling at the top--than the huge intervallic leaps of "Dopo un'orrida procella." With her naturally large voice, Bartoli can at times tend to histrionic excess (in the recitative to the short aria from "L'Orlando finto pazzo," for example), but the expressive color of her phrasing is wonderfully matched throughout by the Giardino Armonico's lively panache. All power to Bartoli in her goal of reviving this neglected aspect of Vivaldi's output. The reissue includes additional photos and text, packaged together as a visually enticing booklet to accompany this splendid CD.
