This new release is somewhat mistitled: while most of the pieces are, in fact, from the Renaissance (or early Baroque), there are works here also by Samuel Barber, Poulenc, John Tavener, Bruckne,r and Gorecki. What they all have in common is their beauty and serenity. Perhaps the CDs subtitle, "Music for Inner Peace," also refers to a type of renaissance, i.e., spiritual re-birth: in which case, they're right on the money. The Sixteen, led by Harry Christophers, is one of the greatest proponents of this sort of choral music in the world, and they don't disappoint here: The Allegri "Miserere," with its wickedly beautiful ascent to high C by soprano soloist, is ravishing; Barber's own arrangement of his "Adagio for strings" for chorus (1967) is polyphony at its most "renaissance" without actually being so, and Gorecki's "Totos Tuus" is otherworldly in it mysticism. The selections by Byrd, Tomkins, et al., are, like the others, impeccably performed. Even an early piece by contemporary composer John Tavener, normally the master of excruciatingly pretentiousness, is lovely. This recording is a gem. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Ethereal Album.......2005-11-09
I heard this album played on my local PBS station one morning and was in immediate love. It's worth every cent you'll pay for it.
Great Music, Fine Performances.......2005-11-02
First off, the title of this album is misleading. Only one of the tracks stems from the high Renaisance. The rest span from the Reformation period to contemporary. All of them are liturgical, all of a certain calm and meditative style--which could be inferred from the subtitle: "Music for Inner Peace."
But those are quibbles. The voices are excellent. The direction impeccable. The recording technique outstanding. And the program--given its self-immposed limitations of peaceful liturgical pieces--is very good. It was a stroke of programming genius to put the "miserere" of Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652) back to back with the "agnus dei" of Samuel Barber (1910-1981). The untrained ear might think the two pieces contemporary, even from the same composer, but for one trained in this genre of music, the differences of nuance are delightful and exhilirating.
I tend to prefer complete works, and listening through this album I sometimes wished for some livelier moments, but those quibbles aside, I am happy to assign a full five stars to this excellent recording. One of the advantages of a potpourri album such as this is that one gets to hear works from composers who might otherwise escape notice.
Music for Inner Peace Indeed!.......2005-08-29
Though there is somewhat of a sameness to the mood of this beautifully performed and recorded album of choral works that span centuries, that uniformity of message is the creative force for this survey of music by various and varied composers. The works were selected to provide a parcel of time away from the noise outside the spirit, a place for meditation and solace so desperately needed today.
Harry Christophers conducts the inordinately talented Sixteen singers with support where indicated from early instruments ensemble, The Symphony of Harmony And Invention, in an organic, crystalline, seamless range of songs from the Renaissance to the present. Works include Monteverdi, Tallis, Byrd, Palestrina, Allegri and travel through time to Bruckner, Poulenc, Taverner, Gorecki, and Barber. Each work is lovingly rendered in perfect intonation and control, setting aside the 'individual' for the sonorous, anonymous, other-worldly sound only found in the great choral works through the ages. Christophers' tempi tend toward the languorous - the 'Agnus Dei' Samuel Barber set to his famous 'Adagio for Strings' has to be the slowest on record! - but this tendency further creates a sense of spaciousness found in the great old cathedrals of Europe.
For quality of sound and polish of performance this recording has already won awards. For the food for the soul that it provides there can be no greater 'award' than successfully fulfilling its promise as being Music for Inner Peace. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 05
Too much choral can tire, but it's still good........2005-05-05
If you enjoy choral music this offering of 16 choral arrangements, conducted by Harry Christophers for DECCA won't offend. Indeed, you might find it rather enjoyable. The selections from various composers capture the essence of the Renaissance-Baroque sound as well as any recording I have head. However, it can, like any steady diet of choral, overwhelm and drag one down as much as inspire. That's not a comment on the quality or selection of songs of this CD as much as an observation about the genre itself. So, this CD has its positives and negatives. One minus is the orchestral accompaniment. When used, "The Symphony of Harmony and Invention" tends to be weaker than I would have preferred when listening to this style of music. Sometimes a nice contrast can actually elevate the tone and texture of the human voice -- and when it's missing, its absence is noticed. You will note for example in Monteverdi's "Christie, Adoramus Te" the orchestration is underplayed - subtle, almost not perceptible. This becomes problematic throughout the recording. Some listeners will like it, some won't. One of the features of this CD that I did enjoy was the synopsis of each song that explains its origin and focus. The notations are brief and to the point, but helpful in guiding the listener along from selection to selection. As for mood, well it's hard to pinpoint exactly: these are hymnals meant for a specific place - not necessarily one's automobile or living room, and hence, a listener may find it difficult finding a place or right time in one's home. If, however, you are in the mood for choral music, and you close your eyes and let your senses flow freely while listening, you might just get carried to that proper place and find "Music for Inner Peace" your cup of tea. The selections are thematic and even in moodiness. I recommend it with the reminder that it is a steady diet of solemn choral. It can be both tedious as elevating.
Very relaxing!.......2005-04-27
I downloaded this album from iTunes, and I'm very glad I did. I was looking for some soothing music to play in the background while I try to grade papers, and this one did the trick. My favorite tracks are #2 and #5 -- both are beautiful songs.
If you like vocal music, particularly chamber-type music, then this CD is for you.

Customer Reviews:
a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-01-15
A Catholic in Protestant England of Queen Elizabeth had to be careful to keep his head, in every sense of the word. Wm Byrd (1543-1623), by writing for the Protestant Church a Great Service and a Short Service, and for the Papists three masses, besides Madrigals, anthems and hymns, remained in the good graces of both factions.
In his position as Master of Musicke, he was called upon for music for every sort of occasion, and rose nobly to the challenge, inventing new types of composition as need arose. He composed a number of songs with string quartet accompaniments, actually the first vocal solos in which instruments played the part purely of accompaniment.
The music on this disc is in some ways very different from the ideal 16th century motet, and from the rest of Byrd's output. The words are set succinctly even tersely, in a manner that seems understated until after repeated hearings, the richness of its subtext emerges in the ear. One of the reasons for the music's restraint is its liturgical purpose; decorum or appropriateness was the highest aesthetic principle of the age, which Byrd fully respected. Thus, it was not written to be sung by large ranks of male choristers in large Gothic cathedrals, but for small private family worship and performed with a handful of trained musicians under the composer's direction. The intimacy of the music nevertheless encourages a certain spiritual intensity that Byrd had not attempted in his earlier motets.
There is no better group than Chanticleer (named after the Rooster in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales) to sing this literature. They are correct in every aspect : vocal accuracy as to pitch and tone quality; excellent balance between the parts and superior emotional investment. Just a great listen!!!!!
Following is a list of the selections:1."In Tempore Paschali" (In Paschal Time) mass for 5 voices. 2. "Regina caeli" (Queen of Heaven)motet for 3 voices 3. "In Assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis" (On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary)mass for 5 voices 4. "Ave Regina caelorum" (Hail, Queen of the Heavens)antiphon for 4 voices 5. "Salve Regina"(Hail, Queen)antiphon for 4 voices
Excellent music, faulty presentation.......2006-08-14
As a fan of both William Byrd and Chanticleer, I find no fault with either the composer or musicians on this recording. Chanticleer's sound is burnished as always, and well-represented by the engineers, and one has the joy of hearing some of Byrd's less well-known music (the Mass Proper setttings in his Gradualia of 1607). Byrd was superb at making much out of little, as he had to when composing music for clandestine Masses in the houses of Catholic noblemen.
My only criticism is with the presentation; while acknowledging that Classical Express is Harmonia Mundi's low-price line, this album could have been much improved by splitting individual selections into their own tracks, and including the texts in the liner notes instead of referring the listener to a website. These are both minor points, however, and the former is much more irritating than the latter.
Recommended.

All chant discs are not alike, and this is one of the best all-around recordings, both for its program and performances. The music covers several centuries and geographic regions and, consequently, includes examples of different monastic traditions and compositional styles. This very fine male-voice choir not only sings the notes beautifully and uniformly, but also conveys the individual character and textual meaning of each chant in a natural, unlabored style. Among these 18 introits, hymns, antiphons, and responsories are some of the gems of chant repertoire, including "Veni sancte Spiritus," and "Salve festa dies." --David Vernier
Customer Reviews:
Better than the "pop" chant.......2000-12-18
This album was written up a couple of years ago in the detroit freepress when the other "pop" chant was big. This was supposed to be a superior recording, and it is. We listen to it all through christmas, esp. christmas eve. Very calming chant, fantastic choir.
If you have never listened to Gregorian Chant before, this is the one to try.

Buy this before it gets out of print (again)!.......2003-02-08
Originally entitled (translated to English) "Gregorian Chants for Christmas," this album is actually on its second release. During its first release, I bought it on cassette -- out of curiosity because of the artistic, medieval Christmassy cover (not the same cover you see now, unfortunately). I didn't know what to expect then.
But the MUSIC -- it will touch your soul even if you're not Catholic (I'm Protestant). The melofluent voices of the Benedictine monks of Munsterschwarzach were conducted excellently and perfectly by Pater Godehard Joppich.
I don't know why, but the Benedictine monks are the best when it comes to Gregorian chants. Remember the monks of Santo Domingo de Silos who topped the charts years ago with their "Chant" albums? They also belong to the Benedictine Order. I've compared Benedictine chanting with the works of other religious orders; others are just mediocre. If you don't believe me, perform a comparative analysis.
...
In 2001, due to popular demand, Archiv re-released the album -- and this is so much better because of the bonus CD: the same Benedictine monks under the same conductor chanting for the Lenten season! One CD for Christmas and another for Lent! This is perfect for your meditation during these two holiest events in the Christian calendar. I also listen to this music when I do my arts and crafts; it inspires and keeps me focused on my work.
<... I advise you to experience the etherial.

Here is a representative, thoughtfully organized, and superbly sung collection of compositions arising from the long tradition of musical and poetic tributes to the Virgin Mary. Victoria and Palestrina appear alongside Stravinsky and Holst. Pierre Villette's little-known Hymn to the Virgin is a gem. Whatever your religious orientation, you can appreciate the music on its own--and the Ely Cathedral sound is heavenly. --David Vernier

Hail, Mary..........2005-10-02
This collection sees the Cambridge Singers once again in one of their most familiar recording settings, the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, with its famed nine-second reverberation, singing very appropriate music for the place, music in honour of the Virgin Mary. This recording was done in 1991.
--Music--
The Blessed Virgin Mary has been the subject of theological discussion, admiration, veneration, and musical composition throughout the history of Christendom. Music in honour of the Virgin Mary is sung throughout the year in different settings. The music here is divided into four primary sections according to the liturgical calendar: Advent to Candlemas, Candlemas to Holy Week, East to Pentecost, and Trinity to Advent.
Each section begins with a Gregorian chant, which often set influences for later composers. The chants included in this collection are Alma Redempotoris Mater, Ave Regina caelorum, Regina caeli laetare, and Salve Regina. Rutter has selected a cross-section of composers from medieval to modern times to supplement these chants. Composers include the early greats such as Palestrina, Victoria, Dering, Guerrero, and of course, Byrd. More modern composers include Bruckner, Verdi, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Howells, Holst, and the contemporary Villette and Swayne.
The addition of Stravinsky and Tchaikovsky show the Orthodox influences in this general body of music in honour of the Virgin Mary. Swayne's Magnificat, on the other hand, is based upon a Senegalese ploughing-song.
The performances are wonderful, deep and full of grace. The voices are in joyous agreement, sometimes meditative and ponderous, but always uplifting.
--Liner Notes--
The notes include an introduction to the CD, a listing of the tracks with composer, arranger and lyrics, together with a brief paragraph about the history of the piece. Where lyrics are in another language (Latin), an English translation is provided. There is a listing of the performers of the Cambridge Singers, but no description of the group, nor biographical information about John Rutter.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
This is a recording full of grace.
Transporting.......2000-12-29
I ordered this CD on the recommendation of a friend, and was instantly addicted! I agree with the first reviewer, that the variety in the collection is wonderfully satisfying. Listeners familiar with the Cambridge Singers will not be surprised, perhaps, by the quality of the performance. But I found it an unusually uplifting listening experience, and had to force myself to remove it from the CD in my commute car, so it wouldn't go stale. I've already given away a half dozen to friends and family. Stunning!
Satisfying.......2000-10-20
The strength of this recording is the diverse programming: stepping outside the English anthem box most listeners attribute to the Cambridge Singers. To be sure there are English composers represented, but there is also Stravinksy, Tchaikovsky and chant, spanning centuries. The pieces are also sorted according to the liturgical year, helpful to choir directors. Naturally the Cambridge Singers deliver precise choral interpretation we've come to expect from them.
