Uniformly Excellent.......2003-08-19
Another example of a hiccup by my computer or mouse - not sure which one - and multiple reviews were submitted. Sorry about that.
This is the third volume of Rheinberger Sonatas by Wolfgang Rubsam and again I am pleased at the quality and technique as well as structural craftsmanship, especially as the later sonatas are approaching the half hour mark. Just learning the hundreds of thousands of notes is an accomplishment in itself but sculpturing the long pieces into a single unit is perhaps an even greater effort.
In a sense, the composer assists in this effort by introducing and reintroducing themes. The writing is now becoming dense in parts - like Vierne's sober, thick First Organ Symphony. But Rheinberger is too much a melodist to become infatuated with so-called "walls of sound". Despite the intensity, he repeatedly emerges with absolutely beautiful melodies that literally sing to the listener.
The Eighth is another somber work and the technical demands of the final movement (Passacaglia) is especially noteworthy. The Ninth (in B flat Minor) alludes to an almost Classical tone in parts yet explores various Romantic realms at ease. This is the longest and most mature of the first nine. It is extremely original without departing from the strict confines of a strucure the composer apparently relishes.
The Trios are miniature tone poems with a German, Romantic appeal. Some are gems, others are simply melodic

This recording is a good addition to any collection of organ recordings. Rubsam is certainly a well-respected performer, and this recording is no exception. Rheinberger is a composer well-known to organists, and while there are certainly many other higher profile recordings of his works to be had, this is a good recording for half the price of others.

Continuing the Rheinberger Sonatas in Grand Style.......2003-07-29
These recordings by Wolfgang Rubsam are a great buy for a lot of reasons. First, the price. At $... per CD this is a fantastic bargain, particularly if you purchase all four volumes at once and receive free shipping as I did. Secondly, there is the sequential order of the Sonatas. Many records are about as orderly as a UN Session on Human Rights with collections like nos 3, 4 and 19 or 1, 2 and 16 or 5, 6 and 12 - groupings that make little sense. The iterative recordings give the collection both a chronological sense and serves as a perfect example of artistic growth.
Rheinberger is still evolving musically though the first few Sonatas are every bit as technically challenging as the latter ones. As the sonatas progress, the problem ceases to be the music itself but the enlarged structures and the manner in which they are presented. As for this, Rubsam excelled. Each work has a unified sense that is often lacking in large, multi-part works. This is a great recording that deserves a prominent role in your library.
All of these sonatas contain the essence of Rheinberger's organ works - the punctuated bass, the recurring themes, the utterly flowing rhythm and the soaring, beautiful melodies. The fugues are quite expansive - not strict like Bach's - and they usually dovetail with the theme.

Rich, Romantic Sound.......2003-08-20
I have returned to edit a duplicate review (one is not allowed to delete a review after it has been submitted) explaining that yes, the CD was great and no, I did not mean to submit the same review twice.
What is so outstanding about these 20 sonatas is the consumate artistry of the set. Along with their meticulous craftmanship they are also peculiarly "organistic" in a way that other organ works are not. Rheinberger was a musical genius encased in a rather parochial veneer. One cannot imagine this happily married devout Catholic engaging in shenanigans like Lizst, Beethoven or Wagner. The composer did not set out to cause waves but to make music. It is unfortunate that only his organ works are heard today, but at least we have that much. Many composers have now faded into oblivion, only to be remembered as footnotes.
These twenty Sonatas, along with the two Organ Concertos, define the German Romantic Movement. His Peace Concerto, composed prior to WWI, evidenced a naive but noble belief that the nations of Europe could live in peace. Little did he realize that his own adopted land would be the instigator of two conflicts over the next four decades.
Although the Sonatas evolve in complexity and style, their basic structure and style are set from the first - a strict sonata framerwork, a fast slow fast, and a concluding fugue. This does not imply a lack of originality since it is more difficult to demonstrate variety within a set form that establish new forms. The first Sonata in C Minor is majestic and again, utterly organistic. For example, Lizst's organ music always sounds like a piano, Saint-Saens a symphony and Handel's a harpsichord. The punctuated sounds of the bass, the virtuosity of writing for both hands and feet, the flowing harmonies with their semi-quaver rhythm (a Rheinberger hallmark) - all of these are present in the first Sonata.
The only complaint concerns the Third Sonata. This work is magisterial and should be taken at a more stately pace than Rubsam allows. In parts, it sounds hurried. But this is a minor quibble with what is surely a definitive recording

Customer Reviews:
a MOST NECESSARY recording! .......2006-07-10
First, I don't know how, but amazon lost my original review of this disc. My list of tags was still there, but not the review itself, so I will do a replacement one.
This is actually "The BEST of Virgil Fox, Volume 3"! Therefore, it belongs in your collection, along with Volumes 1 & 2!
The entire album is simply awesome (as all Virgil's releases were), and it is without doubt the hardest of all to find. Buy a used copy on here, it is the ONLY way to get one!
Highlights are:
The Durafle Suite Number 5.......very rare! I know of no other recording of it! It is simply beautiful, and sadly neglected. Certainly reason enough to purchase this recording!
The Boellmann Suite Gothique is just wonderful, and, another very good reason for purchasing this set.
And, the Vierne and Dupre pieces are played with such magnificent "Virgilian" splendor...all the fond memories of the Riverside concerts come flooding back from so many years ago. Simply put, (as Fox's fans know) there was never anyone to match him...even Liberace couldn't touch him for outrageousness, and of course the Organ is a much more "splendorous" instrument!
As I said above, do yourself (and your collection) a favor and add a copy of this album to it (even a used one from a secondary dealer on amazon here). You will not be sorry! I wish you many happy hours of listening! ~operabruin
Organ Music from France.......2000-12-21
This may be the only recording of the Durufle Suite No 5 for organ available. I've had the original vinyl since I started organ and I've still never tired of listening to it. It's very dazzling stuff, yet incredibly beastly to play. This is GREAT organ music. The Durufle performance alone is worth the price of the CD.
Fox once again Plays with Beautiful Tonal Colors.......1999-09-21
When hearing the Names Franck, and Dupre one automatically thinks France, but when Fox is at the Organ Playing those pieces full of that rich tonal color of the Chorist Reeds one thinks Heavy Organ with Fox in the days of Riverside.
