In the liner notes, the title of this CD is given as 'Favourite Piano Pieces', which seems to fit much better than anything to do with 'Romantic', for here there are gathered miniatures, transcriptions and excerpts by famous and less-famous composers from four different centuries (from the 17th to the 20th)! In fact, the only thing that seems to unite these most diverse tracks is their ability to show off the piano and the pianist to best advantage. The most difficult pieces here appear to be Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Flight of the Bumble Bee' in a transcription by Rachmaninov, and Dohnanyi's incredibly hard 'Concert Etude in F Minor', a fitting close to the whole recital, in which Balász Szokolay is able to distinguish himself as a very able player. The rest of the programme is generally also well-played, with the faster pieces in particular being delivered with skill and gusto, while the slower ones (Debussy, Kreisler) tend to lack something of this enthusiasm; it is perhaps fortunate that the majority of numbers are faster pieces. My personal favourite is Grieg's 'March of the Trolls', closely followed by Handel's 'Harmonious Blacksmith' (which should, of course, really be played on a harpsichord, but still sounds very good on a concert piano) and Paderewski's 'Menuet'. All in all, an entertaining hour of piano playing and excellently recorded, provided you don't mind taking a guided tour through the last 400 years of composition in such a short time.

I'm afraid I have always found this CD to be rather soporific, although that is a purely subjective reaction. The main reason for this, I assume, is the programme, which is not specifically romantic and combines such diverse composers as Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Chopin and Mendelssohn with a somewhat sentimental arrangement of 'Greensleeves' and some excruciatingly twee pieces by second and third rate piano bards with exotic names like Badarzewska-Baranowska, Chaminade and Lange. Hungarian pianist Péter Nagy masters all the works in this compilation in the sense that he plays them efficiently, but nowhere does one get the feeling that a piece really has a message or any kind of emotional depth. Moreover, Nagy occasional overdoes the force of his left hand, making for rather one-dimensional listening, all the pieces sounding in the end like Péter Nagy rather than like the composers who dreamed them up. In particular, I found the Rachmaninov 'Vocalise', the longest piece on the CD, did nothing for me at all. The quality of the recording is of a fair standard for 1987.

Note added on 26 November 2005: I have just had the opportunity of listening to this disc on some first-class "high end" equipment and I must admit that, like many other Naxos discs, this one sounded a whole lot better at this level of reproduction, with Péter Nagy's playing profiting no end from the clarity and clean-cut purity of sound produced from the piano (in this case by a 24bit D/A converter). The improved sound made the music much more interesting, decidedly less soporific than it had ever seemed before. So am I to praise Nagy and Naxos - or the manufacturers of excellent hifi equipment?

Recorded 1987 at the famous Italian Institute in Budapest, this CD certainly has the advantage of good sound: Balàzs Szokolay's concert piano is very realistic, and occasionally I thought I could even hear him breathing! As for the skill of the pianist: unless you happen to live in a great metropolis, you are unlikely to be able to hear piano playing like this live. Szokolay is especially good on the fast pieces: Weber's "Invitation to the Dance", Mendelssohn's "Hunting Song", Chopin's "Fantasie-Impromptu" all sound tremendous, and the close of the CD (Gershwin's 1938 preludes, Bartók's "Romanian Folkdances") show Szokolay at his best. The slower pieces are also well-played, but here I detected a lack of real emotion: Tchaikovsky's "Barcarolle", for example, can be really moving when played by someone like Mikhail Pletnev, but here it is just a pleasant piece of entertainment. The same could be said of some of the other slower pieces, including Liszt's "Liebestraum [Dream of Love] Nr. 3".

Piano music from 1780 (Mozart) to 1938 (Gershwin), 15 pieces by 14 composers, and apparently no uniting theme: the original title of this CD had nothing to do with "romantic", and I suppose the CD is really meant just to show what the piano (and the pianist) can achieve, but I found the programme very uneven.

    This is the last of the five discs that Balázs Szokolay recorded in the Naxos “Romantic Piano Favourites” series (Italian Institute, Budapest; December 1988 and January 1989). As with the other discs before it, Szokolay makes a good impression with those composers and pieces with which he appears to have an affinity (Bartók; all the faster, more ‘showy’ pieces: here, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Schubert, Liszt, Moszkowski), but some of the more meditative pieces seem to lack emotional depth or are spoiled by a rather too hurried approach which seems to emphasize virtuoso acrobatics at the expense of poignancy and slight variations of tempo. The opening Scarlatti sounds good, but Szokolay is not really able to rival the old EMI recording of Scarlatti’s sonatas by Christian Zacharias. The Schumann, the Mendelssohn, the Grieg, the Albéniz and the Debussy are, in my opinion, in the “also-ran” category. Perhaps the rarest piece on this record is Lefébure-Wély’s “Monastery Bells”, a number which was very popular in its day but which is hardly likely to raise an eyebrow today.

      If you are looking for music that can soothe the soul, buy this collection. Each cd has a collection of excerpts from classical artists which are peaceful in style. Works from big-time composers such as Beethoven and Bach are included, but many outstanding pieces are drawn from lesser known artists such as Godard and Paganini. I use these cds as background music at work, where the wide swings in volume found in most of classical music would be inappropriate. As always with Naxos, the recordings are of excellent quality.

      Here is a welcome to a "Nostalgia" series by Naxos, and a welcome into the 21st Century to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Younger shoppers may not be familiar with this remarkable singer who once rivalled Caruso in the recording popularity stakes. Blessed with the naturally beautiful voice and the secure breath control that any singer might envy, McCormack had the additional ability to communicate directly and memorably and vividly. He polished and perfected his inimitably Irish diction until he felt confident that every listener in the largest auditorium could hear and understand every word. Feeling he had no flair for foreign languages or for acting, he retired early from the operatic stage, but not before he had made recordings of several Mozart and Handel arias that have remained models ever since. Some of his recordings of lieder by Hugo Wolf, moreover, can still send shivers down the spine.

      This CD of "Favourites" provides songs he recorded between 1912 and 1940. The sentiments may be passé (patriotism, nostalgia, piety, the praise of women and the sorrow of parting) but the sincerity and charm transcend fashion. There is also an interpreter's magic evident in the dramatic monologue "Kathleeen Mavourneen" and the jaunty recounting of what happened in "The Garden Where the Praties Grow" that is spell-binding.

      Let me first explain a few quick things. Unforunately, Naxos makes it slightly confusing, by releasing ten CDs under the title "Romantic Piano Favorites" (Volume 1-10) and also two box sets (each containing 5 of the 10 CDs) labelled Volume 1 and 2. So be carefull what you buy. I advise you to get the box sets, because they're very inexpensive.

      Also Naxos should not have calles the collection "Romantic Piano Favorites," since the piano pieces are not all from the Romantic Era (although some are) and they're not romantic in nature (some are dark, others just dance pieces). Rather this collection should be called "Piano Favorites."

      Also just because it's an inexpensive Box Set, it doesn't mean the quality is mediocre. In fact, it's great. It was well recorded and the pianists are very talented.

      Box set Vol. 1 contains so many great pieces that I wouldn't be able to list them all. Instead I advise you to see the track listings and hear them by looking up the single CDs rather than the box set. But really this is a great collection, I advise you to buy it!

      The sixth volume of “Romantic Piano Favourites” was recorded in spring and summer of 1988 and is able to escape the censure to which some of its predecessor volumes were subject. Perhaps it is because there are, with the exception of Grieg’s “Erotik” (also reasonably done), no really slow pieces on this disc that Balázs Szokolay is able to shine: he obviously has a penchant for the technically demanding fast pieces, and these come over here convincingly. Haydn, Schumann, Schubert, Raff, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, Albéniz, Schulz-Evler … all make a good impression. Chopin’s “Barcarolle” is perhaps not quite up to the standard of the other interpretations, but this is more than compensated by the Bartók; Szokolay seems to have a particular affinity for his countryman. Schulz-Evler’s Concert Arabesque is a series of incredibly ornate variations on themes from the younger Johann Strauss’s “Blue Danube” and makes for eleven minutes of quite fascinating listening, although I suspect that this is something of a nineteenth-century crossover piece.

      The disc was recorded, like the others in the series, at Budapest’s renowned Italian Institute, and the sound is warm without being over-intimate, altogether quite enjoyable.
