The entire disc is superb and who knew Doc could play like this? Wow! And of course, being an Ohio native, the fact that it's the Cincinnati Orchestra is just a bonus.

A great selection of music. Severson's performance is outstanding. Sound reproduction is exceptionally good. If you enjoy trumpet you should have this CD

The Best of Both.......2005-12-24

This album really lets Severinson shine. I always felt he was underchallenged on the Tonight Show. And Kunzel is at his best here, too. If you like Doc and Erik, also give a listen to Big Band Hit Parade.

Amazing technic, but poor tone........2005-12-01

I listened to this cd and the technic is truly amazing. This guy is really good-BUT-he has that nasty jazz tone that doesn't do well in classical music. Especially disturbing is the Bach-Busoni Chaconne. Listen to the piano performance by Evgeny Kissin and you'll know what I mean. Good for motivation for brass students, but if you want some really good, sweet classical, go somewhere else.

Doc at his best!!.......2005-11-26

Of course, we all knew and loved Doc Severerinsen as the top shelf band leader fronting the top-shelf Tonight Show Band when Johnny was at the helm. But this collection shows Doc as he really is.....not "just" a top lead trumpet man, but indeed, a top trumpet player. He appproaches ALL music with a seriousness and respect that only a true musician can bring to a composition, no matter WHAT the genre. All great instrumentalists will tell you that the goal is to sound as much like the human voice as possible. As Doc approaches the Puccini suite, you understand what they mean. His technique is beyond category, able to deliver nuance and expression as any instrumentalist (and vocalist!) would ever hope to. This is a must for any music lover, and for any student of the trumpet.....time to go to school! And bring a lunch!

This never before issued recital was given in 1954, when Zino Francescatti was at the peak of his formidable powers. The legendary French violinist, whose musical ancestry goes back to Paganini, plays with such stunning precision and musicality that these works leap off the page with acrobatic joy. Francescatti's `old world' approach to this music includes his use of piano accompaniment in the famous D major Concerto, and in the seven Caprices. (Francescatti never made a commercial recording of Caprice No. 17, so this stands as a new addition to his discography.) This electrifying CD is for enthusiasts of the grand era of virtuoso violin playing, and reconfirms Francescatti's place, along with Heifetz and Milstein, among the three greatest players of their generation.

Francescatti does it again.........2006-06-09

This is a great album. Francescatti does it again, with awesome deliverance of Paganini music.

The Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1 was awesome, like always. This recording is with piano accompaniment with Artur Balsam, who also does excellent. If you've heard the original recording of this with Francescatti and Ormandy (with orchestra), Francescatti plays almost the same way. Since this is a live recording of a Library of Congress recital, you hear coughing but it's not too distracting. Now, for the flaws: you have to first acknowledge that this is live. Francescatti has, in my opinion, a lot of false notes. A lot doesn't mean intonation problems in every other measure, but for a great violinist like Francescatti, I consider it to be a lot. I would say that there were about four or five big mistakes in the first movement, but seems like he warmed up in the second and third movements. The second movement was beautiful and the third movement was almost perfect.

The Carnival of Venice was brilliant. I think that it was a little different than the version that Salvatore Accardo played on the "Accardo plays Paganini: Complete" album from Deutsche Grammaphon. Nevertheless, it was played almost flawlessly. Francescatti starts the beginning a little faster than how Accardo started it, but I thought the the tempo Francescatti played in (just the introduction) was better than Accardo's. Accardo takes a bit too slow.

The Paganini Caprices, all arranged for violin and piano, were all executed very well. They were all almost perfect too. As a bonus to this album, the Paganini Caprice #17 was included. Francescatti never recorded the #17 before so it was a nice little treat in the album. Personally, I frown upon piano accompany arrangements for the Paganini Caprices because they take away its originality, but the caprices in this album were all enjoyable.

Finally, the I palpiti was amazing. It seems that everyone plays different versions of this. Accardo plays his own, Francescatti his own, and others such as Kremer and Vengerov play the Kreisler version. I like the version that Francescatti plays better than Accardo's and Kreisler's. It's much more simple and concise, while it's technically astounding.

I highly recommend this album. It's also great to hear a violin concerto with piano accompaniment. I would give this album 4.5 to 4.75 stars because of some intonation issues in the first few tracks, but since I can't, I'll gladly boost it up and give it 5 stars. As my title says, Francescatti does it again.

Ah, Spring. What a guy. His CD is pretty famous in LA clarinet circles---we play it when we've had a bit too much to drink and need a laugh. But then, we also start to retch, too! What is he thinking? Does he have a clue as to how poor his intonation is? Can he play a real piece of music without slopping obscene amounts of schmaltz on it? Looking at the rest of his recordings, he can't (or won't.) If you want ego, go buy some Stoltzman.

More schlock.......2006-04-16

Spring's work could only be described as annoying. While his technique is excellent, he had sadly forgotten to put any depth into his expression and musicality. Let's call him the "Twinkie" clarinettist. Dedicated to show, ego, and cheapness. And the band accompaniment? Dear God. Save us.

Certainly a Dragon's Tongue.......2001-06-12

Spring undoubtedly is a virtuoso clarinetist, and this cd is aimed to please the crowd. You'll be blown away by the flawless technique and rapid tonguing. It is a great collection of clarinet literature, most esp. the Carnival of Venice. Moto Perpetuo sounds simply amazing. However, if you want a more impressive version of Rossini's Introduction, Theme, and Variations, I reccomend you pick up the Neidich recording done by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. Aside from that, I highly reccomend this CD. Pick it up now!

Technically amazing!.......1999-10-14

This CD is basically an encore CD of clarinet literature. The selections included all show off the soloist's technical abilities. Dr. Spring's ability to multi-tongue and circular breath is very impressive. The only possible drawback is that the accompanying "orchestra" is actually a college band. While the band is not bad, having an orchestra would have suited these pieces better. Nevertheless, this is a great CD to buy.

A Musical Gift .......2005-11-27

I played beside Eric when I was out of college and he was in high school. The phenomenal player that I knew then has matured into a horn player with a gift that has to be heard to be believed. By the time the CD was over, I was shaking my head in disbelief.

WOW!!!.......2004-04-23

Eric Ruske's virtuosity is phenomenal! By the time "Carnival in Venice" was over I was speechless. I didn't think that french horn playing that I heard was possible. Yet Eric's talent is obvious in that he made the most difficult techniques seem easy to perform.

I recommend this CD VERY HIGHLY!!!

A light-hearted romp.......2001-12-04

"Virtuoso Music for Horn and Piano" is a light-hearted romp through hornist Eric Ruske's arrangements of mostly familiar pieces. The selections are designed to exploit Ruske's virtuosity and he takes full advantage of the opportunity. At least three of the selections are arrangements of trumpet showcases, Arban's well-known "Carneval of Venice" and Mendez's "Valse Suriano" and "Jota." Czerney composed his "Erste Fantasie" for violin. Liner notes indicate that only the Rossini and Saint-Saens pieces were originally written for horn.
Eric Ruske has established himself as a major horn soloist, and this album reinforces my opinion that he is one of the best hornists currently active. Pianist Pedja Muzuevic provides excellent accompaniment.
Why record an album of light classics for horn? To quote Mr. Ruske, because "[i]t felt so good when it was over."

Beautiful Vintage Opera Recordings.......2006-08-09

The previous review praised these rare vintage recordings BUT then gave the CD one star because it was $30.00+ and much of the material is on two other then less expensive CDs (more material for less money per CD). However, there are five selections on this CD that are not on the other CDs (including a beautiful Maori Lullaby, Ponce's 'Estrellita' and Bianchini's "Ninna-Nanna") ALSO now there a New condition copy of this CD available for 16.95.

NOT WORTH THE PRICE.......2006-04-12

You can buy new on Preiser 2 CDS including the music on this 1- CD and more of this great artist for about the same price of this -1- CD @$30.00. Unless the jewel case is 24 carat gold, Don't bother !!!!

Since I wrote this review about 10 minutes ago- this item is now unavailable at $17.98 or new or used starting at $31.03- Makes no sense- go with the Preiser - just got Volume 2 last night WOW!!!!!

Relatively obscure Rossini piano pieces surprisingly good.......2000-07-11

Until a few weeks ago, I did not know these piano works existed. After hearing "My Hygenic Morning Ritual" on the radio, I had to have this CD. Rossini seems to have taken his music to a new level in his older years. This compilation is more reminiscent of Listz, Chopin, or Beethoven. It contains many more romantic elements than his frequently heard operas, which tended toward the classical. After listening to this, I believe his operas were written more for commercial success; these were written as art. One can even imagine they influenced Rachmaninov! It is well worth the price.
