The Legendary Leonid Kogan.......2005-05-01

While I'm not currently buying Testament titles at the same rate I was a few years back, I simply could not pass up this one featuring the legendary Russian violinist Leonid Kogan. This CD features Kogan's mono accounts of both the Prokofiev Concerto No. 2 and the Tchaikovsky Concerto, with Basil Cameron conducting the London Symphony Orchestra from 1955 and Andre Vandernoot leading the Orchestre de la Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire from 1956 respectively. These are certainly among the best renditions I've ever heard, but they take a backseat to the Heifetz/Munch recording of the 2nd Prokofiev and Kogan's own stereo remake of the Tchaikovsky with Silvestri (the latter having recently been reissued at budget line in EMI's "Encore" series). To round out this title, Kogan's stereo performances of Tchaikovsky's Souvenir d'un lieu cher, Op. 42 - Meditation, and Serenade melancolique, Op. 26 have been included. The "Meditation," from the same 1959 session that yielded the aforementioned stereo remake of the Tchaikovsky VC, is performed with Silvestri leading the OSCC, while the Serenade is with Kondrashin and the Philharmonia, also from 1959. Collectors will want to note that this very same performance of the Serenade was included on Kogan's EMI "Artist Profile" release, but that will probably not be important to most as that set is now an extremely rare collector's item. In all, this disc is yet another "testament" to a great reissue program.

Middle-of-the-Road Tchaikovsky.......2007-04-09

I've been very high on the talents of Ilya Kaler, a student of Leonid Kogan and a prizewinner in the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition, particularly in his fine recording of the Shostakovich concerti and of music by both Paganini and Brahms. But this recording, which competes head-on with some of the greatest violinists who ever took up a bow, comes up a bit ho-hum. There is no denying that Kaler has a sweet tone and fine technique, and one would have thought that in this quintessentially Russian music he would come up heads, but I have to admit that I was just a bit bored. Not that the performances aren't fine, but there is just that last little something missing that one hears in others' recordings. I compared this recording with the last Tchaikovsky violin CD to come my way, that of young German phenomenon Julia Fischer -- which has virtually the same repertoire, the exception being that she plays the violin-and-piano original of 'Souvenir d'un lieu cher' while Kaler plays Glazunov's orchestration of that suite -- and Fischer's is clearly the more enjoyable of the two. Kaler's recording has the advantage of being on the budget label, Naxos, while Fischer's is on full-price Pentatone in hybrid SACD. I compared the plain stereo layer of the disc with Kaler's though, just to level the playing field and the Pentatone sound is better of the two, by a hair.

In fairness, Kaler's way with the slower works here -- the Canzonetta of the concerto, much of the Sérénade mélancolique and the two slow movements of the Souvenir suite -- is generally satisfying. But, again, when compared with Fischer's his performances feel just the slightest bit stiff while hers ooze Russian melancholy, surely as they were intended to do. In the quicker passages Fischer has more sparkle and flexibility.

Bottom line: if money is an issue this CD might be for you, but if you are looking for more emotionally satisfying performances seek them elsewhere.

I BOUGHT IT FOR "MEDITATION"--THE CONCERTO'S WORTH IT, TOO.......2001-03-07

I'm glad I don't have to worry about getting a decent version of the D Major Concerto on another CD--Great performance, although the recording is a little on the tinny side, but I'll live. I'm glad we, at last, have a collection of all of the short pieces for violin/orch. as well as the great concerto by Tchaikovsky. I already have "Serenade Melancolique" and "Valse Scherzo" as played by Ithzak Perlman/Leningrad Phil. on the Tchaikovsky Gala CD (now out-of-print), but I had to hear "Meditation" in D Minor again. Not an easy piece to find these days, it's absolutely moving. And I didn't know until I got this that it was originally written as the 2nd movement of the Concerto. Like the Saint-Saens violin set, this is an excellent summary of Tchaikovsky's concertante music for said instrument.

This album is a delight in every way. Russian Soul consists of mainly rather unknown works that were composed by and/or arranged by some very imminent Russian composers such as Borodin, Gliere, Shostakovich, Scriabin, and, of course, Tchaikovsky. These works are filled with those rather dark, melancholy and beautiful melodies which are played exquisitely by the Moscow Chamber Orchestra lead by Constantine Oberlin and featuring Corey Cerovesk on violin who plays most sensitively and beautifully. At all times, one is made very aware of the gorgeous melodies in these works!

If you love Russian music, as I do, and want to hear some works that are not performed too often, buy this album.

A Beautiful Musical Portrait of the Russian Soul.......2006-01-10

This music is pristine, exquisite, sublime. Everything on this CD is outstanding: the selections, the sound quality, the orchestra and the very talented violinist, Corey Cerovsek.

The CD insert is also excellent. It has a very well-written, detailed, informative essay explaining the historic origins of and influences on Russian music that have contributed to its special deep soulful character and concluding with a reference section on each of the composers represented on this CD. The essay is followed by information on the conductor, orchestra, and violinist.

The violinist, Corey Cerovsek, was 26 years old when he recorded this CD with Constantine Orbelian, one of the world's finest conductors, and the Moscow Chamber Orchestra, one of the world's great chamber orchestras. His playing is truly a pleasure to listen to. I quote directly from the CD insert: "Born in 1972 in Vancouver, Canada, Corey graduated at age 12 from the University of Toronto's Royal Conservatory of Music. That same year, he was accepted by Joef Gingold as a student and enrolled at Indiana University, where he received bachelor's degrees in mathematics and music at age 15, master's in both at 16, and ocmpleted his doctoral course work in mathematics and music at age 18."

The CD dedication is written by Constantine Orbelian:

"Dedicated to my mother, Vera Voznesenskaya Orbelian, who has given me tremendous love, comfort, happiness, strength -- and shown me life through her beautiful Russian soul."

This wonderful musical portrait of the beautiful Russian soul has my highest recommendation.

There are few albums that convey the pathos of the Russian soul like this one. This collection includes not only staples like "Serenade Melancolique" but also rare gems like "The Rush Light" and Gedike's "Miniature". Highly recommended!

Gorgeous listening.......1999-06-15

Ordinarily I cringe when I get a CD filled with "arrangements" of music, great or less great. My reasoning is that a composer knew what he was doing in the creative process and who is so-and-so to alter it? on the other hand proved so beautiful at first hearing that all my prejudices went out the window. Here are 13 tracks of Russian music by Gliere, Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, and other lesser known composers (including "Folk"), played with melancholy love by violinist Cerovsek. This Delos release is highly recommended not only for its playing but especially for the selections, some of which I do not think are available on any other recording.
