Editorial Reviews In June 2002, the Fisher Ensemble participated in the creative residency program at Centrum, located at Fort Worden. Originally built as a World War I defense bunker, Fort Worden is now open to the public as a Washington State Park. These weathered buildings, scattered along the dunes and buried in the hillsides, remind one of Greek ruins and provide an inspiring setting for an artistic residency. On the final Saturday afternoon of our stay, Taina Karr (one of the founding members of the Fisher Ensemble) and Garrett Fisher brought their instruments up to Powell, which is a long, resonant tunnel. There are no windows, and once you walk a few steps inside, complete darkness surrounds you. The recording was made in this eerie but acoustically live environment. Fisher describes his inspiration: "What struck me about Fort Worden was the tension between the natural beauty of its surroundings and its original military purpose. I wanted to create a musical structure that began with these two conflicting forces and, through the course of the piece, found a resolution between them. In creating the structure that afternoon, I relied on Tainas ability to internalize it and make it her own. I have worked closely with Taina since 1994; she recently travelled with me to Sweden, where we recorded The Passion of Saint Thomas More on the BIS label. At the Bunkers of Fort Worden is a testament to our collaboration as artists and friends. "
