Steven Wilson = Musical Genuis.......2007-06-30
If You Love (or even just like, if that's possible) Porcupine Tree, You have Got to Get this CD. It is awesome! I can't say any more than the other reviewer's, that did such an excellant job of describing and analyzing this musical offering. Just Buy It!...Right Now. You won't regret it.
Saturated With Melancholy.......2007-06-20
Has it been two years already since Blackfield was released? I bought this when it first came out, liked it, then shelved it since at the time I was buying more music than I could properly digest and appreciate. Recently, I picked up Blackfield's second album and liked it so much I just had to revisit the debut.
The first Blackfield is quite a statement, literally saturated with melancholy. Be warned that if you are of the type given to feeling sorry for yourself or to wallow in self-loathing, then you should not listen to this except when you are in an upbeat mood. If one morbidly disposed dwells on the lyrics when depressed then that person might just "take the pipe" after pondering the meaning of this album.
For me, however, this is just the kind of music that puts me on another plane of consciousness. Bring it on! Blackfield is introspective indeed and profoundly thought-provoking throughout. There are few songwriters around today better at exploring the inner self than Steven Wilson.
The whole CD is excellent, but my favorite piece is the glorious Cloudy Now, a song that voices the furtive and unspoken thoughts of a lot of people I know. Other favorites are Open Mind, the title cut, Pain, Summer, and Hello.
Someone opined on a music blog the other day that anyone can write depressing lyrics, but it takes a genius to combine those lyrics with music that fits them. I agree. Steven Wilson is one who has that genius. Listen to Blackfield, and you'll hear what I mean.
Such an awesome band.......2007-04-07
I actually think I like the second album a tiny bit more, but this one still gets five stars. It's just beautiful, sad, brilliant music, perfect for driving or wallowing in misery. Seriously, I like to listen to it when I'm feeling down because it kind of helps me get my feelings out. Oh god, I'm making it sound like emo. It's not! It's awesome. It's pretty relaxed and mellow, but there are some harder parts. Steven Wilson has long been one of my favorite songwriters, and this is even further evidence of why. Aviv is great, too. If you get a chance to see them in concert, do it!!
Shorter tracks, still engaging........2007-04-02
Normally the lead singer is known for long tracks but he's been kept from going on too long and it still works. The songs are not too long but still take you on a journey and tell you a story. Audio quality is quite good, never sounding compressed or losing clarity.
Brilliance on a level you've never seen before..........2007-02-04
You need to own this album. It's that simple. This album is amazing. Steven Wilson is a genius, a musical marvel. Everything he does is just gold. Alot has already been said in other reviews about why this album is good. I'm not going to repeat it, I'm just going to say how I feel about the album, and why you need to buy it. If you've followed Steven's career, this will certainly be familiar to you. But this album manages to be different than PT. It doesn't really feel like a Tree album. You can certainly feel the influence of Aviv Geffen on this album, and it works remarkably well.
This album is addicting. Alot of the time I listen to music while I'm doing something. But this is an album you can just sit there doing nothing and it will keep you interested. It's very mesmerizing, and believe me thats a good thing. Lyrically its a strong and powerful album, very moody and dark. This effect is really enhanced by the beautiful vocals of Steven Wilson. His voice is unique, and this album has that haunting feeling to it.
Get this album. It's a masterpiece in every sense of the word. More people need to hear this album, it's too good for people to not know about it.

Just Listen To Dreamer Deceiver!!!!!!!.......2007-01-27
Listen to that song and tell me it is not great. This also contains classics like Tyrant,Victim Of Changes,The Ripper. There is no doubt in my mind that this is Priest's best album. Period!!!!!!!!
I love it.......2007-01-05
I bought this record album when I was a teen, many many years ago. The music sounds just as good now as it did then. Crank it up!
BOW TO THE PRIEST.......2006-10-08
The Metal Gods when they were only Rock Gods. Victim Of Changes is the break out song on this piece. Also a number about Jack The Ripper (The Ripper) which Tim Owens uses as his name after he replaced Rob Halford when he left. This is a true classic album for The Priest, the Tyrants of all.
Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny.......2006-07-18
I was first turned on to this album around '83 - '84. I have a brother ten years older than me and he had Sad Wings on vinyl. When I first started getting into metal/hard rock it was Iron Maiden, Saxon, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Rush, 80's Priest. I was listening to Maiden/Killers one day in my room when he burst in, took the record off and started to put Sad Wings on. I was pissed at first and jumped up to stop him. He pushed me back down and said, "just listen". So I did. I must have listened to Sad Wings 20 to 30 times in a row that evening. I turned all my long haired, metal head buddies on to it the next day. It is probably, if not the best, then one of the best metal albums ever.
The first truly great Judas Priest album!.......2006-06-30
It didn't take Judas Priest long to build on the strengths of "Rocka Rolla" and create an album that is quite close to heavy metal perfection and remains to this day one of their best.
This is a dark, moody masterpiece that would herald further excellence to come such as "Stained Class" and "Killing Machine/Hell Bent For Leather".
Having said that, it is different from what would come after it. It is darker, and there are still some noticeable influences, especially Black Sabbath (not to be wondered at from fellow "Brummies") but also Queen on the likes of "Epitaph".
Glenn Tipton plays piano on a couple of tracks. Don't let that put you off, because his playing adds to the overall mood. I'm not one of those who believes that the occasional keyboard bit kills heaviness. Look at Don Airey and especially Jon Lord for excellent HM keyboards.
The only reason this is getting four instead of five stars is because I would love to see a remaster!

Damnation is a complex and often acoustic album that demonstrates beyond question Opeth's high regard for the sweet harmonies and post-psychedelic atmospherics of '70s rockers such as Camel, Steve Hackett, and, especially, Barclay James Harvest. Which isn't to say this is a retro album; the aforementioned bands have been left out of rock history to such a degree that it's as if they never existed at all. Then there's Opeth's own pedigree. Steeped in the bloodier aspects of metal, singer Mikael Akerfeldt has no time for sweet love or fanciful flights of fantasy; he's trapped in post-relationship depression, drowning in loneliness and regret. His voice drifts beautifully over and under the band's dark folk and hypnotic soft-rock progressions, as chiming twin guitars that recall Wishbone Ash drop casually in and out. This music is intense and often movingeven without the shouting. --Dominic Wills
Customer Reviews:
simply beautiful........2007-04-20
opeth always has good stuff to offer. their music shifts from being brutal, with death grunts and all a la "when" (my arms, your hearse), to nice quiet acoustic pieces like "patterns in the ivy part 2" (blackwater park). no matter which album or song opeth throws out, it's always a gem, shifting your emotions from tense and on edge, to relaxed and dreamy. but this time, in spite of all the diamonds opeth has been releasing, i wholeheartedly confess that "damnation" is a ruby.
generally, opeth is known for a variety of things, such as songs that span for well over 10 minutes, mikael akerfeldt's proficiency in both clean vocals and death grunts, martin lopez's drumming, etc. i know them best for making absolutely stunning songs, particularly the quieter, slower ones where the guitars aren't overdriven, where akerfeldt's vocals are clean and conjure up a sense of longing, and such. simply put, opeth made this album beautiful.
when listening to "in my time of need," you can imagine yourself treading slowly through a big city on a traffic-less night, a light rain falling as you contemplate over the meaning of life after a broken relationship. "closure" brings about images of folk music in a forest, in a moor, or in a traditional european/celtic setting. "weakness" makes you feel as if you're in an empty cathedral, ready to make a confession, with per wilberg's haunting, flow-and-eb keyboard/mellotron/organ background.
when all's said and done, "damnation" is definitely one of the best slower, quieter albums out there. despite the fact that it's totally underrated, like i said before, it's that one ruby in a world full of coal.
They can do more than just play very loudly.......2007-04-19
Opeth is a metal band, but Damnation is not a metal album. It is the second half of a broken up double album, and is almost purely progressive rock. Deliverance, which was released about six months earlier, is supposed to be one of their hardest records, and this is quite a counterbalance to that. Opeth is known for switching between hard and soft moments, and that's part of why I liked Ghost Reveries, but without that, they are free to just let the softer stuff do what it wants, and it becomes a more enjoyable overall record. Despite his growling, he can definitely sing, and they don't seem out of place doing music like this.
"Windowpane" proves you can be good at regular guitar playing and fast-paced metal shredding. The more downplayed musicianship is combined with creepy sounding ambiance and strong vocals, and this combination is heard throughout. My favorite part is the end of "Closure" which combines different kind of music to create an awesome sounding groove that could last forever if it wanted to. The whole thing is a bit brief compared to their other stuff, which makes some sense considering it was once just half of an album. It's quite entertaining while it lasts, and shows how much range a band can have.
Unique And Powerful.......2007-04-04
This is the BEST space metal CD ever done! It is lyrically as dark as any death metal but musically closer to Pink Floyd and early King Crimson. The band uses some fascinating chord progessions and time signatures to create a consistently creepy atmosphere that is second to none. This CD is really an art rock masterpiece.
Haunting Electric Folk Rock .......2007-03-21
"Damnation" is one of the best and most unique releases in Opeth's ever growing resume of impressive recordings. Originally planned as a mellow companion piece for the experimental death metal of "Deliverence," the material proved to be strong enough to stand on its own two weary feet. By no means the standard thrown together soft songs one would expect from a metal act, the band and genius producer, Steve Wilson, put as much effort and ambition into the recordings as they did on the heavier counterpart. Oddly enough, what could have been their most limited album ends up being perhaps their most adventerous.
Akerfeld and Lindgren's expressive electirc guitars weep and moan like melancholy ghosts, while the folky acoustics are seductively dark and mysterious. Lopez(drums) and Mendez(bass) form the backbone of the album with tight tragic grooves you can tap your foot to. Eerily filling out the background Wilson uses spooky organs, keys, piano and other subtle effects to enhance the bittersweet rainy day atmpshere. While the music could be described as mellow there is often a nervous, suspenseful energy as well as not so vague hints of something more sinister perhaps even evil lurching beneath the surface. In top form, Akerfeldt convincingly croons the gloomy lyrics like a long dead phantom longing for the return of a lost love that will never come back; his weary voice frail but incredibly rich in understated emotion.
Despite the group's progressive rock roots and influences, most of the songs are tightly structured in a digestable pop format complete with tension building verses and releasing memorable choruses you can sing a long to.( Though the music is a great deal more busy and dense than most pop structured rock obviously.) The urgent but lengthy opener "Windowpane" is the exception with it's tasteful solos and instrumental passages. Other exceptions include: the mourning guitar led instrumental "End Credits" and the quiet bluesy Avant Garde of "Weakness ". Other highlights include the climatic "Closure," which is the only time the band really breaks lose and goes into a lengthy, menacing freak out jam that makes the heavier moments of their other albums sound like child's play; even without the benefit of distorted guitars and growled vocals. "Hope Leaves" might also be the band's most beautiful if not sorrowful moment with it's chiming autumn rain melodies and moving vocals.
Very surprising.......2007-03-13
This was my first Opeth CD; I picked it up based on a recommendation from a co-worker. Initially, I was disappointed as I was expecting something heavier. Later I learned that this is Opeth's most mellow album: You won't hear any "death grunts" on this CD! After listening to (and purchasing) more Opeth CDs, I now appreciate this CD more, but still prefer some of their heavier stuff.
Very good music. If you're into progressive rock (yes, rock, not metal) then give this a try.

Weak vocals, experimental but not pathbreaking.......2007-06-26
Not one of the strongest discs in their collection, in my opinion. The vocals are stretched pretty thin, the thrash moments are pretty benign, the mid-tempo soaring guitars are good not great. Still, it's experimental enough - as always Opeth is never afraid, never bowed.
Maybe buy this one later, to fill in your collection (and if you're doing that, why aren't you looking at the box set?) - and if you're new, take a look at Ghost Reveries and Damnation.
a different angle..........2007-02-15
a lot of people worship this band like, well, religion... that's for sure. i feel im coming from a different train of thought here, so let me see if i can provide an alternate view ...
first off, this is the only opeth album i've ever heard. second, i am generally not much of a fan of "prog-metal" music, as most people categorize this kind of stuff...im thinking specifically of bands like dream theater and queensryche. pop 80s metal was never my thing, and this kind of stuff, to my ears, takes ratt riffs and production, and strings them together in 10-20min suites of technical flash... no dream theater song i've ever heard (i haven't heard too too much, however) contains the melodicism and flow of yes' "close to the edge", for example, but i guess this is a different ball game, so to speak... i mean, how much melody can you get on endless pastings of riffs based off a low E or D string? i know im generalizing here, but im trying to describe why this music usually does nothing for me.
that said, opeth is different...i really like this band... their 10min suite development is still firmly within the endless pastings of riffs, thats for sure... but their songs seem to have genuine melodicism through and through, and they are certainly from a death metal background, which makes their heaviness authentic as hell...the 2min "for absent friends" (also the name of a short acoustic interlude on genesis' "nursery cryme"... coincidence?) is a great example of their melodic ability, even though its far from their normal material. this is just great music, through and through, and this kind of melodicism integrates well throughout songs such as "a fair judgement". occasionally they pen a pretty cheesy, overused classical melody, like when yngwie would base a song of his in one in order to show off how good of a "classical" guitarist he is (a "carnival-esque" section of "by the pain i see in others" springs to mind, an otherwise amazing song), but thats the kind of stuff that happens with this kind of pretension. overall this is outstanding stuff (the end of "deliverance" is just...AHH!)... and is a good entry point into this kind of music if your tastes are a bit like mine.
It doesn't get much better than this.......2007-01-10
Opeth is the most creative band out there at this time. You need to own this CD.
My Metal Discovery Part Deux.......2006-12-31
I am openly NOT an advocate of Death Metal,BUT when done in such a crafty
fashion as these guys one has to but stop and listen to know that they go beyond metal and prog. There are some beautiful melodies going on not to mention some fantastic playing. "Wreath" is not to my liking and that's why it gets 4 stars, otherwise this is an almost flawless cd.
This is what PROG. means: going beyond the "already done that" and not rehashing. Many prog bands are guilty of this, they just do what other bands have done and call themselves Neo-Prog...hogwash!!!That's musical plagarism.
Opeth sets the bar high for progressive bands, in general because nobody has done what they have. Opeth is the future of Prog Metal. Long live Metal. \o/
Opeth Maintain Their Brilliance.......2006-12-22
Sweden's Opeth, one of metal's finest artists of this generation unleashes one of their heaviest releases to date. Since the early 1990's, Opeth have mesmerized audiences with their fusion of progressive death metal. 2002 brought fans a metal onslaught mixed with beauty. Originally meant to be released as a double-disc with 2003's Damnation, Deliverance found itself to be another gem that Opeth has skillfully written and flawlessly recorded.
`Wreath' is a fast and heavy piece, one that immediately catches the attention of the listener with its ferocity and beautiful progressive breakdowns. Mikael Akerfeld's vocals continue to shine and his death metal growl is amongst the best in the entire genre. His clean vocals are also worthy of mention. The title track, `Deliverance,' is one of the best songs that Opeth have ever composed. This song is a fan favorite and is played on nearly every live set. `A Fair Judgement' is a beautiful track that contains one of my favorite solos that Opeth have ever done. `Master's Apprentices' is another song worth mention that has very memorable riffs along with poetic lyrics.
Do not be drawn away by six tracks total for this recording. All five songs (one of them is a short, instrumental song) are over 10 minutes long. Musically, Opeth are widely considered to be one of the most talented bands in the genre. Their live performance is also breathtaking. I have had the privilege to see them perform various times including their Chronology set in Los Angeles. Deliverance is a marvelous album to have in one's collection. I know people who do not even enjoy metal, but like pleasure in Opeth's music. These Swedish masters continue their sheer dominance with 2002's Deliverance.

Tough way to get a live album but worth every dollar . . ........2007-05-26
There are a couple of ways to look at this box set. If you're just getting acquainted with Opeth and are willing to spend some extra bucks to get an indepth review of their best stuff (so far), you can't go wrong. The price is right and the material is excellent.
If you're already a fan, chances are you already own everything in the box except the live CDs which are the ones you're drooling over. If you're wondering whether the set is worth the price just to get your hands on the live stuff, the answer is yes. If you own the DVD of the same concert, it's nothing new, but you can put the CDs in your portable or car player and rock on. If you don't own the DVD and would rather have just a good live album by Opeth, this is the only place you'll find it. The good news is that each CD is individually sealed, so if you're inclined to resell whatever CDs might be duplicated with this purchase, chances are this set will cost you less than you think.
As for the music itself... well, if you're a fan, you know what you're getting. The recording quality of the live CDs is very good. My copy doesn't have any of the buzzing noise some other reviewers have mentioned. The performance, of course, is pure Opeth - passionate, precise, and played with all the intensity you'd expect. Given their production values in the studio, the live versions have a somewhat raw flavor to them. This is entirely a good thing. You can hear them working just a little harder to make up for the overdubs you don't hear, and the excitement of playing for an appreciative audience is evident. A live album is usually the best measure of what a band has going for them when they can't hide behind multiple tracks and takes. In this case, what you hear is what they are and that is absolutely AWESOME. Enjoy!
Like It.......2007-04-19
I am new to Opeth. I saw this at a local record store, and noticed that it included from what I have read some of their best work. It was only 35 dollers so I picked it up. Three of the cds in this set retailed at the same store for 17 dollers and the fourth cd, which is of the band live is only availible in this box set. The live cd however, as most people have stated has an annoying buzzing sound. It is not that bad. Overall the band is great. The heavier stuff is better, but the softer stuff is starting to grow on me. The four cds included are Blackwater Park, Deliverance(My Favorite), Damnation(Accustic), and Lamanatioins (Live). I reccommend this to any new listner of Opeth. It is a great cheap way to get ahold of what many consider their best material.
Buzzing sound - defective discs.......2007-04-02
Actually, the buzzing sound is a defect on the discs. I contacted Koch Records and sent the discs to them. They sent me a replacement - no more buzzing. Contact Koch Records through their website. And it is a fine box set. I am glad they decided to release this on CD, because the DVD was so good.
A MUST.......2007-02-09
Very great for any Opeth fan to own. A MUST! This covers the best music from the band as of late (minus Still Life which is phenomenal). I particularly like that they released "Lamentations" a live disc recorded in the UK in 2003.
...and that buzzing sound on the disc, although slightly annoying, is more than likely noise interference off of their amplifiers.
Can't get much better music for the money! Buy it now!
good but...........2007-01-21
Yes, I also have that annoying buzzing sound throughout lamentation, not only that, but media player gives the wrong information for songs so when i listen to the songs on my mp3 player, it says it is one song but it's another.... ugh.

The "Devil's Diaphragm" SUX and ruins everything it touches!!.......2007-04-21
I have heard Death metal growl-style vocals referred to as "The Devil's Diaphragm" so that is what I mean by the above. For the record I HATE IT and find the style more nauseating than the worst attitude posturing rap garbage!!! They are the primary reason I could never get into the whole Death-Metal (and similar) genres and, in most cases, would rather listen to static!!!! And, with most of the bands, they have no real talent for singing so I guess this is all they can do!!
But Opeth is different!! The music is GREAT, they have a LOT of talent and the guy obviously can sing when he wants to so I really don't get it. When I first heard this CD I wondered if he was "in character" or something but, now having heard several other Opeth CDs, every Opeth CD is like this (except one, so I read...might have to check that one out). In fact, if the music wasn't so magnificent I probably would have sold the CD and never listened to them again.
Bottom line, if it wasn't for "The Devil's Diaphragm" I would have given this 5 stars, the music alone certainly deserves it, but the vocals are so annoying to me that it knocks off not just one, but 2 stars!!! But...if you like well made heavy music....by all means check it out and decide for yourself!!
Masterpiece!.......2007-04-09
As a lover of many different types of music from rock to classical to reggae to hip hop and everything in between, I must say that this album is a masterpiece. It is a true work of art. It sucks you in and takes you away to another place, it is truly hypnotizing. It gets better with age and repeated listens. At times it is angry and aggressive, other times it is beautiful and peaceful. One of the greatest albums of any genre, ever. Only true music fans will apreciate this though, this isnt for the casual FM radio listener. The only thing better is the new Ashley Simpson record...yeah right!!!
Good stuff - extra tracks worth it.......2007-04-05
These Swedish prog-metal masters/closet folkies are a breed apart and a cut above just about any band that might get mentioned in the same breath. The two extra tracks on the deluxe edition -- "Still Day Beneath the Sun" and "Patterns in the Ivy II" are good examples of the band's alter ego: acoustic guitars, pastoral themes and quiet vocals. Mikael Akerfeldt can sing sweetly and growl nastily with equal effect. Tunes such as "Harvest" and "The Drapery Falls" betray the South American roots of Opeth's rhythm section, which can swing in 6/8 time as adeptly as it can rock out in the more traditional 4/4.
Opeth Perfects Themselves.......2007-02-06
Words cannot really describe just how great this cd is.I am completely floored by the precise musicianship of these guys. The songs are majestic and the melodies are constructed with such perfection.
My favorite is BLEAK,this experiments with the mediterranean style and such wonderful guitar on it. On most of the songs, there are like songs within songs and complex time-changes and tempo boosts that one who does not like the "growl",like me,will find themselves so engulfed with the music that everything else is secondary. I truly believe that, that's what Opeth is all about, making complex music to its extreme nature, pushing the limits of metal in prog.you've gotta respect that.
Metal Rules ! \0/
opeth, as usual..........2007-02-02
i'm warning you; after listening to opeth, your whole perception of music might change.and blackwater park is the right place to start this change.all the tracks are breathtaking, especially the orient-influenced track "bleak".this limited edition is even better since you'll have the chance to hear akerfeldt's heavenly vocal on two amazing songs.the video for harvest is also great for showing us that opeth are actually human beings who eat, drink and breathe just like us(i thought that people who create such unbelieveable good music cannot be humans!).highly recommended, you won't regret...

maybe (hed) pe's worst... but still (hed) pe.......2007-06-06
This is easily probably (hed) pe's worst album with maybe the exception of "blackout". But what people need to understand is Hed's rythym section took a serious hit with this album with the loss of two great guitarists wesstyle and Chizad and a great drummer B.C. So with that in mind the quality of the music isn't going to be as great as it used to be but they still do the job. There are some great (hed) p.e. classics on this Album with kick off track "Represent" also: "wake up" "war" "Voices" and "raise hell". The hidden rap song at the end of the CD is also a pleasent surprise. However there are some songs that just should have never been put on here that do drag the album down and just simply don't cut it. Mainly "the Truth" and "amerikan beauty". All in all there is still some raw (hed) pe material on here that any true fan can vibe with. I'm just thankful that (hed) pe is still around and they prove that they can still get down. It's only up hill from here thankfully. Check out "Back to Base X" and upcoming Album "insomnia".
Who would want to copy this junk anyway???.......2007-01-02
This is quite possibly the worst CD I have made the mistake of purchasing in a long, long time. The CD protection software is so pathetic and corrupt, it makes this virtually impossible to use - unless I start carrying a discman to the gym again. Not anytime soon. What I really can't figure out is who in the heLL would want to pawn this horrible stuff off on other people? If they have heard it, I guarantee they won't want a copy. Whiny, expletive filled lyrics and a sad attempt at music. This was tired before it was burned and distributed. Save your money.
Very Underrated........2006-11-22
I don't see what the problem is people have with this album. I was very impressed with this CD, yes it's vulgar and childish, but as far as I know, they did it on purpose. Raise Hell is honestly the best song, with a very nice guitar solo at around 3:35 until the end of the song. In short, this CD seems to be bashed and pissed on because it's not Broke.
Yes the Rap-Metal boom has been dead for years and yeah Hed should have gotten more respect, but it beats the worn out Metalcore bands such as KillSwitch, and Trivium among others, that play the same played out Hardcore with gothenburg riffs and solos. Also Hed isn't Nu Metal, as they don't play the same two cords over and over, and not to metion the guitar solo's, which Nu Metal never uses.
Buy this CD, it's underrated.
Uh..what did you expect kids?.......2006-09-07
Hed(PE) is a horrible group that was never good, nor talented. Just because you can write nursury rhymes and throw down beats on a drum with bass and guitar does not make you a tight group. These guys are horrible, and this album reconfirms it. Many reviewers are stating that their vocalist sounds like a whiny baby on this album. Well what did he sound like on their previous albums? He has always sounded like a baby who cannot rap or sing! He was horrid On Methods of Mayhem and horrid in Hed(PE). This band sucks and is for NU-Metal fans only(basically kids who hate their parents for some odd reason or another and just love to be overall angry at the world because they cannot face the fact that they suck).
Do not buy this album. DO NOT! It is horrid beyond belief.
What Hath Limp Bizkit Wrought?.......2006-08-08
I've been a fan of Hed Pe since their first s-t debut, and thier second album, "Broke". They were smash underground hits, and should have carried the band to far and high places. But then, their third album, "Black out" came, and they gave into the pressure of the corporate music business, and sold it. Along with this change, came the loss of fans and an ever revoling door of musicians for subsequent tours and albums.
With this, their fourth album, Hed Pe tries to make things right after the disasterous "Black Out" Fiasco. On some songs, they are back at the top of their game, like on songs "Raise Hell", "The Truth" and "Box", but on the other tracks, it just doesnt seem like Hed are trying anymore.
What the hell happened?

I like this side of Scorpions..........2006-10-01
Alright, when I first bought this album I would have given it 5 stars, for it just blew my mind. It's Scorpions with a wonderful, renewed sound, fresh as if they were high school kids. Klaus's voice is amazing, and the overall production is clean and shining (just compare the sound of this album to Crazy world and you'll know what I mean).
So, after 7 years of its release, I'm only giving it 4 stars, because there are so many ballads (and not precisely the group's best) in this album. 5 tracks certainly keep their jewel status through time and those are: Mysterious, Yellow butterfly, Skywriter, Aleyah and Du bist so schmutzig. I must admit that now when I listen to this record I usually skip from track 2 to 7. They're not bad songs, but I guess a little bit too mellow (except for Mind like a tree, but I never really liked the China White-kind of Scorpions sound). Im my opinion this record is much better than Unbreakable for the simple reason that they were still using their creativity to do something new and exciting, and not to try to "re-create" themselves (and failing to).
If you're a die-hard Scorps fan you must own it. If you just like the 80's stuff don't even look at it. If you are a newcomer and are interested in the band, this could be (depending on the music you like) a good start. I love Scorpions and as most everything the Scorpions does, this is great! Much better than other group's best stuff.
People who say this is bad don't understand music.......2006-02-27
People, who "claim" to be fans of Scorpions, but don't like this album simply don't understand the music. These people probably just want a song they could head bang too, but some of us want a song that is unique, interesting, musically appealing, and thoughtful. Most of the songs on this album are just that.
This is what we call maturing. It doesn't mean they don't know how to rock anymore; it simply means that they've chosen to experiment a little on this album. And, in my opinion and I'm sure many other real Scorpions fans would agree, the band was very successful with this album.
Mysterious is a great opening track. Kinda reminds me of recent U2 (although the track may be slightly too long).
Obsession is a decent ballad.
10 Light Years Away is a great, melodious rock song.
Mind Like a Tree is good for all you who want to head bang to an impersonation of Disturbed.
Eye To Eye, What You Give Back, and Skywriter are all very original, great-written songs.
And then the last 3 songs are very good as well, ending off the album nicely.
This album has a certain thing that is difficult to achieve on a lot of albums: continuity. There is a certain uniform feeling that is existant throughout the entire album and it sorta binds all the songs together so that they go hand in hand with one another. This continuity is an important thing for an album to have in order for me to deem it successful.
Thanks for reading.
Certainly NOT the band you know and love..........2005-04-17
Eye II Eye (1999.) Scorpions' fourteenth album.
The seventies and eighties were decades that were kind to the Scorpions. The former saw the band's rise in musical power, and the latter was the decade in which the band gained massive mainstream success. Unfortunately for the once-great metal band, the nineties didn't go nearly as good. Percussionist Hermann Rarebell, one of the key members of the group, had left. With him gone, the band released Pure Instinct, an album which was, essentially, ballad overkill. It also hinted at the band moving in a new direction - certainly NOT the one the fans of their classic material wanted to see. The album was followed up a few short years later with Eye II Eye, released in 1999. Would the new album see a return to roots for the once-great metal band, or would it be a further tragic misstep? Read on for my review.
I've gotta say, being a life-long Scorpions fan, this album was a big disappointment - and I will not hesitate to say that this is the worst album the band has ever released. That said, though, it's not a bad album (It's bad by the band's standards, but since the standards of modern music are so quickly degrading, it's good by them.) This album features mostly ballads, just as Pure Instinct before it did - which beautifully demonstrates how much Hermann Rarebell's departure has hurt the band. A problem with the ballads is that, not only do they all sound pretty similar, but also that they are placed in a bad place on the album. For the most part, all the ballads come before all the rockers. Because of this, most listeners will lose interest in the album before they even get to the tracks that rock. Even the tracks that can be considered rockers are a far cry from anything the band did back in their heyday. Everything on here has a modernized rock sound on it - not a classic metal one. The hard rockers are more along the lines of the bands from the era in which the album was released. And even then, I'd be hesitant about calling these hard rockers or heavy metal tracks. If you don't believe me, listen to the album for yourself - you may be shocked. In the end, I DO believe this is a good album, but I also believe it pales in comparison to everything else the band has ever done.
This album's availability is dismal, just like their other nineties works. I have mixed emotions about this - these albums from this era aren't that great, but at the same time, their lack of availibility makes it harder for fans to complete their collections. For that reason, I'm hoping they get reissued sometime.
I only bought Eye II Eye for two reasons - I got it VERY cheap at a used CD retailer, and I needed it to go towards completing my Scorpions studio discography collection. If you're a fan of the band, I don't advise buying this album for anything but those two reasons. I admit, though, some people will get more into the album than others, and many will hate it. It is for this reason tht I ONLY recommend it to open-minded, die-hard fans of the band, or completists. Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot here worth your time or money.
The Scorpians ?????????.......2005-02-14
Words can't properly describe how BAD this CD is until you listen to it. I'll never forget when this came out back in 2000 and I thought "Cool, a new Scorpians CD", then went out and bought it and how SEVERLY dissapointed I was when I listened to this for the first time. What were these guys thinking when they made this Stupid Disc, I mean dumb Synth/Hip Hop trendy modern sounds. This is NOT something a regular, true Scorpians fan will enjoy, much less EVER want to play again. They have redemeed themselves again by releasing "Unbreakable" and getting back to the type of music that they do well, good hard rockin' songs, not like the songs on this sorry release.
Stay far away from this if you only like the "Old" Scorpions.......2004-09-09
What in the name of heavens where they thinking??!! Ok, they have the right change their music but really this is a bit extreme, there are some songs here that Madonna could have used for her albums. Of course you'll find one or another good track but all in all this album really sounds too popish.
Just when you thought that Pure Instinct really fits with the worst Scorpions' album gold medal, here comes Eye II Eye to take the medal away.
