Baroque Masterpieces.......2007-07-07

The music was very good but wish they had more to listen too. Not enough bang.

Great short Baroque piece collection.......2005-02-05

This CD has 17 pieces on 22 tracks including 7 by Handel, 2 each by Bach & Corelli, and 1 each by Pachelbel, Mouret, Albinoni, Gluck, Clarke, & Purcell. They are frequently the best known piece by the composer--and easily recognizable: Pachelbel's Canon, Mouret's Rondeau (theme from PBS' Masterpiece Theater), Albinoni's Adagio, etc. If you like high quality short pieces/excerpts, this CD is for you. My only qualification is: no Telemann, but it's just too good for a 4-star rating.

Excellent Baroque Collection.......2003-07-22

As I have stated in many of my previous reviews, I am a huge fan of the Sony Essential Classics (SEC) budget series. Most of the recordings feature classic and often definitive performances featuring the likes of George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Robert Casadesus, Isaac Stern and Rudolf Serkin among others. Here we get a variety of orchestras and conductors including big names like Jean-Claude Malgoire, Raymond Leppard, Pierre Boulez, Sir Charles Groves and the great Eugene Ormandy. This disc features excellent performances of what is arguably the most popular Baroque music ever written. I am not usually one to give five-star ratings to greatest-hits style collections (particularly in classical), but the half-dozen performances by Ormandy make this disc a great purchase for both novices and serious collectors.

Wow!!! The Good Humored Ladies!.......2006-08-03

The 'Good Humored Ladies' written by Scarlatti is recorded by the Cleveland Orchestra conducted by Louis Lane. This recording alone is a good reason to add this CD to your collection. It was issued many years ago and finally re-released again.

Other music on the CD is also high quality sound and very relaxing.

An addition to the music includes recipes inside the paper cover.

One of my all time favorites.......2006-09-22

I first purchased this CD many years ago after hearing it on a local classical station. It has long been one of my favorite CDs, classical or otherwise. The tracks demonstrate what I consider to be some of the best of baroque music. I often listened to it on long car trips or when relaxing at home. Unfortunately, I lost my copy and have been looking for another. I certainly hope that it is re-issued in the near future. I highly recommend this CD for anyone interested in classical music. Or anyone that just likes to sit back and relax to the sound of a mellow classical piece.

An Amazing Year.......2005-12-04

This Top 10 of 1720 is an awesome collection of fantastic songs. They are well-played; the sound is rich and sometimes haunting. The pieces are played slowly--they are long compared to most other albums with the same selections. For example, Albinoni's Adagio is 10:17 minutes long in this album. It's 8:24 on Essential Classics' "Baroque Masterpieces" (B00005YQL6) & 6:58 on The Eroica Trio's "Baroque" (B00002SWU0). However, Pachelbel's "Canon" is 5:40 here, 6:29 on "Baroque Masterpieces," and 4:28 on American Express' "Tranquil Seas." Perhaps my favorite selection though is Bach's "Air" BWV1068 which is 4:55 here but 4:03 on volume 2 (Bach) in the Masters of Classical Music collection (B000001VU5). This is, perhaps, the favorite album in my collection. Rivalled only by EMI Classics' Baroque Telemann, Concertos & Sonatas (B000002S5Z) and The Masterpiece Collection, volume 7: Baroque. Hopefully, the CD will become available again soon.

I'm apparently not the only one..........2005-04-10

It's amusing and kind of comforting to see others, here, writing about childhood associations with this album. In cassette form, it was a staple of family car trips back in my '70s youth. But I'm pretty sure it's not just nostalgia that makes this collection a swell anytime listen.

I confess that I am not a classical expert. I've got a few Mozarts, a few Bachs, a few Beethovens, just enough to make my collection seem "respectable" should someone of culture take it upon themselves to browse. Sometimes one of those classical cuts pops up on my iTunes shuffle-play, and I appreciate it and all... but I can't say it quite moves me the way a good pop tune does.

That's where this record comes in. The title is apt: these are the hits -- the classical tunes you know, whether you realize it or not. They're not epic, they're not bombastic... they're evocative, downright catchy, human-sized numbers played crisply and well. They are the pop tunes of their day.

Highly recommended for newcomers to classical. And since it's also a favorite of my classical-obsessed parents, I guess experts appreciate it, too.

absolutely the best for the last twenty-five years.......2005-01-16

This recording/collection came out before I was born, and my mother used the record to soothe me to sleep as an infant, later purchasing my own copy when I was a bit grown so that I could listen to it to fall asleep every night, even when I spent the summers away from home. I continued to listen to it until intermediate school, when sleep stopped troubling me, but the music was etched on my brain. Just hearing any one of the magnificent pieces on this recording puts me inmind of the others.
Now, years later and with chronic insomnia, I find that this albim (along with Richard Satie's work) is one of the few things that can soothe my fractious soul to relaxation and sleep.

I highly recommend it for any fans of classical music, and even for those with young children. It is simply some of the most beautiful music ever written.

My absolute favorite LP and now CD.......2001-02-20

I first heard this LP when we were in Toronto in the 1980's. I LOVED it then and I bought the LP. Now I have the CD and listen to it often. I never tire of it. Absolutely wonderful to listen to (over and over again). It is a perfect gift to give to friends and relatives. It is "my soul's" music.
