If you are interested in the complete piano music by Szymanowski, you can choose between four single Naxos CD's with Martin Roscoe, or a 4 CD Set by Nimbus Records with Martin Jones. The Nimbus box costs a bit more than 4 x Naxos but with a free coupon code (virtual voucher) the prices end up equal, so price cannot matter. What does matter is the artist's performance, and the manner of the disc compilations. Roscoe needed 12 years (1994-2006) to complete the Naxos project and has won numerous awards and praise for it during that period, whereas Jones needed 1 year (1992-1993) only with no significant award; so objectively speaking, Roscoe's performance is 'better'..although there is nothing to criticize regarding Jones's perfect playing. In my crusty ears both performances sound very much alike, to be honest; so who plays should not matter either. Finally the most distinctive feature of the two releases is the compilation on each disc: Jones's is 100% chronological (op.1,3,4,8,10,14,etc.), so that you can find all(!) of the middle-Szymanowski on disc three; CD1&2 represent the early, and CD4 the late (CD4 has 100% the exact compilation as Marc-Andre Hamelin's recording on hyperion records!) composer. This makes listening to the CD's very very easy and comforting. In opposition, Roscoe seems to have mixed all operas arbitrarily on the discs and he even splitted the Mazurkas Op.50 and spread them on all four CD's. Strange thing to do! Sorry, i cannot detect any kind of logical order within the Roscoe release. You might like the element of surprise when listening to a Roscoe disc..but I find these illogical couplings with its arbitrary doses of early-middle-late Szymanowski rather irritating than enjoyable. It somewhat spoils the collector's edition *IMHO*. And that's maybe exactly the point of Naxos: Roscoe's CD's aim at the occasional listener who only wants *one* disc, representative for Szymanowski's oeuvre, and no matter which disc he chooses, it will always contain a similar dose of early, middle, and late. In our case, such devised marketing did not work for me! :P The booklet for Jones@Nimbus has 12 pages of true reading, excellent and detailed; the total times for his four CD's are 69.06, 66.06, 66.06, 67.34 (sum=4h29min); produced and copyright 1999.
A last word on the music itself, if Bortikievich (Bortkiewicz) was the 'Russian Chopin', then Szymanowski must be called the 'Polish Scriabin^2': early-Szymanowski sounds like early-Scriabin, just with squared virtuosity and complexity; middle-Szymanowski sounds like late-Scriabin with double frenzy and intensity. So, if you enjoy Scriabin, you will like most of Szymanowski, bet?!

        An entire CD of music for piccolo? It seems like such a bizarre idea that it's perhaps surprising how close this disc comes to succeeding--even given that the performer is the phenomenal Italian flautist Roberto Fabbriciani.

        The first four works are all excellent. Janacek's March of the Bluebirds--based on a theme also used in his wind sextet Mladi--is a delightful, throwaway two minutes. This is followed by two Italian works, Castiglioni's Musica Vneuhkokvahja and Donatoni's Nidi which--in different ways--explore the wonderful lightness that's possible in solo piccolo playing. The following piece, Ferneyhough's Superscriptio--the opening piece in his Carcieri d'Invenzione cycle--is perhaps the closest there is to a classic for solo piccolo, and Fabbriciani plays as you would expect from the dedicatee of this difficult work.

        The rest of the disc is less impressive, Casterede's highly camp La Belle Epoque, for piccolo, flute and piano, caricatures Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven in a sub-Poulencian manner, while Loeb's Six Preludes are largely uninteresting exercises in musical Orientalism. Isang Yun's Allegro and Camillo Togni's Tre Preludi do at least rise several levels higher than the immediately preceding works, but it's hard to imagine wishing to return to them on a regular basis.

        Stockhausen's Tierkreis--a set of twelve melodies for the signs of the Zodiac--follows next. It's enjoyable enough, without coming close to the best this composer has to offer. The disc then ends with the only orchestral work on the disc, Valentino Bucchi's brief Piccolo Concerto--the title being a pun. This is a rather stylistically eclectic piece, worth hearing a couple of times but not inviting repeated listening in the way the first four works on this disc do.

        Overall, this recording is about what might be expected from 65 minutes of piccolo music. Despite the number of weak works in the program, it's worth considering, given the comparatively low price and the outstanding music in the first third of the disc.

                Piano XX Volume Two is the second of two discs featuring the Italian pianist Massimiliano Damerini in a survey of the piano music of the 20th Century. Whereas the first volume concentrated exclusively on the music of the first three decades of the century, this disc splits naturally into two halves; the first half of which concentrates on music from between 1905 and 1915, the second of which concentrates on post-war modernists.

                Nikolai Roslavets is still one of the lesser-known of the Russian Futurists. His 1915 Prelude is an intriguingly chromatic essay in overlaying faster musical detail over slower harmonic changes. In contrast, Bela Bartók needs no introduction: his 1915 Sonatina features three delightfully contrasted folk-inspired movements. Bartók's compatriot Zoltán Kodály is less known for his piano music, but his Klavierstück op 11/7 is a very fine work: slow and atmospheric, yet full of contrast. It makes me curious to hear the rest of his piano oeuvre.

                Returning again to better-known music, Berg's Opus 1 sonata is a remarkable debut. In a single, well-contrasted and hyper-Romantic movement it surges inexorably to its climax. Prokofiev's Suggestion Diabolique is the last of a set of four early pieces: furiously mechanical and aggressive, and not without a vein of (somewhat childish) humour.

                The focus of the disc now swings to the post-war modernists, with a reading of Stockhausen's Klavierstück VII. This work is an intriguing essay in piano resonance effects and (at least in Damerini's attractive performance) I find it distinctly appealing. Berio's Sequenza IV also concentrates on resonance effects (and the use of the soft pedal) but with a chordal feel rather than a pointillist one as in Stockhausen's piece.

                Musica per amici is an early work by the Italian experimentalist Sylvano Bussotti. In this piece a post-war atonal idiom is gradually infiltrated by tiny diatonic motifs. The disc ends with Brian Ferneyhough's Lemma-Icon-Epigram, a work dedicated to Damerini. This outstanding work, in three movements, is inspired by the medieval poetic form of the Emblem (Ferneyhough had been reading Walter Benjamin's essay on the subject). Accordingly the Lemma is a torrent of atonal Lisztian virtuosity, the Icon a slow interlude and the Epigram attempts (unsuccessfully in the composer's view) to tie the whole work together.

                Unlike on the first Piano XX disc, the performances here are mostly very good, though in the Berio and Bussotti the piano sounds fractionally out of tune. I like Damerini's unusually slow reading of the Berg sonata, and his performances of the shorter pieces are lively and enjoyable (though I prefer Kocsis in the Bartók). His Stockhausen strikes me as extremely persuasive, though I prefer Florent Boffard's DG recording in the Berio. The best performance on the disc is left for last: Damerini's stunning reading of the Ferneyhough completely outshines Ian Pace's rival recording in its range of colours and sheer virtuoso joy.

                This is an excellent collection, and if the program appeals, an obvious recommendation.

                Massimiliano Damerini is a premiere Italian pianist who has devoted his creativity toward the modern. There was a time when you could count on one hand pianist willing to brave the world of avant-garde music, with its penchant for complexity and conceptual freedom. This is a great compendium of the 20th Century including long forgotten works. Like the Roslavets "Prelude" from 1915. Roslavets was part of the progressive arts community that welcomed the overthrow of the Czar,and the 1917 Revolution. His music is tailored quite well for the piano,with a generous use of colour as here. The Kodaly "Piano piece #7" is also a neglected work,but I don't know why, Kodaly had a keen interest in instrumental colour as exhibited here with fast quips into all the piano's registers. The Berg "Sonata" is takened extremely slow, and I don't like it this way. The work is neurotic and morose to begin with,if played fast, Damerini seems to have some indulgent wishes he desires fulfilled. The Berio "Sequenza" is one of his uninspired of the lot, with contrasting idea of block chords to arpeggiated. Berio had Stockhausen in mind,after experiencing the latters 11 "klavierstuck" it is easy to find your own voice within this coldly abstracted language. This is Ferneyhough's mature work for the piano, he has an early "Three Pieces" but "Lemma-Icon-Epigram" is a tour de force,ferocious discipline is necessary. Its musical argument however is quite tame,where Ferneyhough resorts to quite conservative means to his materials,as when he simple transforms a register to claer the field for subsequent events or moments. You feel the vigours of modernity hovering in this piece,as if the argument of 12-Tone serialism refuses to spend itself. Like an old ancient voice still wanting the things that are modern. Still Ferneyhough has a consummate compositional technique that always finds a link toward the next piece. Damerini could have made his selections from a greater pool of resources.
