Album Description

These historic performances, recorded by The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation, are being released for the first time through an agreement between the NZBC and Bridge Records. Recorded during Sir William Walton's seven concert New Zealand tour in 1964, this two disc set is being sold for the discounted price of one CD. The first CD opens with Walton leading a magisterial `God Save the Queen' and segues into an impassioned reading of his romantic Violin Concerto. Walton was reportedly `overjoyed' to be working again with the American violinist Berl Senofsky, who had performed the concerto under his baton with the New York Philharmonic and Chicago Symphony Orchestras. Walton's sparkling Partita is given an exhilarating reading to bring the first CD to its conclusion. Disc B is given over to a major composition-Walton's Symphony No. 1. As encores, Disc B concludes with two short string orchestra pieces from Walton's historic Henry V film collaboration with Laurence Olivier.

I bought this album for the violin concerto. Having long been an admirer of Berl Senofsky, I was eager to hear him in his prime, playing this work with the composer himself conducting. To say the least, I was not disappointed. The performance showcases one of America's great violinists at the peak of his form, delivering a knockout performance of one of the most challenging concertos in the repertoire. It should be required listening for every young violinist who thinks that playing a lot of fast notes is the way to a career. In Senofsky's hands, every note, and there are lots of them, have meaning and purpose. He was a singular artist and this recording should not be missed!

This 4 CD set has some enjoyable, stirring music superbly performed, including Scapino, an overture in the form of a symphonic scherzo, the deservedly popular Crown Imperial and his moving viola concerto.

I was surprised to find that the opening music in his Facade is the theme music chosen for Michael Palin's hilarious Ripping Yarns, but disappointed at first when I realised that the Suite is entirely orchestral and does not include the Sitwell poems. But the music stands on its own very well, and I suppose I shall have to later invest in a CD which does include the quirky poetry.

Bryn Terfel does a great job as narrator in Belshazzar's Feast, which was previously the only other Walton work familiar to me.

Highly recommended.

            This is a two CD set on which, though several of the cuts are edited, more than half appear in their entirety. What a splendid set they make! I've always been a fan of the musical grandeur evinced in British Imperial music. This album, particularly the first disc, offers music from this genre in spades, both instrumental and choral works. Hubert Parry's "I Was Glad" shines out in dazzling brilliance. Listening to Walton's warhorse "Crown Imperial" and Elgar's "Coronation March" we can visualize the full ceremony of state. And listening to Coates' "Dam Busters March" brings to mind all the hope of a proud people fighting, down to its last collective drop of blood, a mortal threat being wrought by an invader's ruthless forces. I'm sure this sounds melodramatic, but after all, total emotion is what this music is all about. I might ask for a cut or two less of Coates or Walton, not because those recordings were not excellent, but because, instead, I'd have liked a cut from Bridge, Tippett, or even Rutter. But, excepting that slight objection, this CD duo does its job most excellently and well.
