4 out of 5 stars Priceless recordings, poor collection, worth the purchase.......2003-01-08

Don't take the word "complete" literally. It probably is the entire set of Bach recordings made in the period mentioned in the title (1927-1947), but Segovia definitely transcribed and recorded more of Bach's works than the ones featured here. And just because he made two recordings of one particular piece in that time frame, that's no excuse to include both on the same CD. The liner notes are nonsense - the transcription of a Bach repertoire and its performance on the guitar do not, all by themselves, make it "a worthy instrument", the dedication of guitarists striving for perfection is just as much part of the contribution.

That said, it's a wonderful addition to any classical guitar collection, well worth the purchase, even if you can do better. There would be no concept of "classical guitar" without Segovia's lifelong dedicated work, and as long as you accept the simple technical fact, that recording technology in those days was not what it is today (although in fact, the recording is surprisingly clean), you'll be glad to have treated yourself to this treasure.

It would also behoove anyone who loves this music, to hear some of it performed on the violin as the composer intended. You might want to try the Yehudi Menuhin recordings of the same period (2-CD set), of Bach Sonatas and Partitas. It would add so much to your appreciation of the music, and of the wonders the guitar is capable of.
