Amazon.com essential recording
Dvorák composed four piano trios, and all of them are fine works. The very last, the so-called "Dumky" Trio, has eclipsed the others in popularity, which is a pity, particularly with respect to the Trio No. 3 in F minor. This work, composed at exactly the same time as the Seventh Symphony, is clearly the finest work of its type since Beethoven--and that includes the three trios of Brahms. Perfectly proportioned, emotionally intense, and chock full of incredible tunes, it grabs you from the first note and never lets you go. The Beaux Arts Trio performs all of this music with their customary musicality and expertise, and the "twofer" price in unbeatable. Now try that Trio No. 3--you'll be glad you did. --David Hurwitz

Emblematic and desert island choices!.......2006-11-19
Dvorak's immense talent as composer of chamber works deserve to him, even a major status that most of people tend to estimate. The spirit of eloquency, sheer lyricism and brisky musicality make of this set a true must-have.
Don't miss this set under any pretext.
fantastic Recordings!.......2005-12-16
The beaux arts' performances of these trios, like most recordings of their golden period, wih Cohen and Greenhouse, set a benchmark, for both the technical as well as the emotional depth in the interpritation of chamber music... Their tension and beauty, particularly of Isidore Cohen's distinctive tone, thrills the heart, as much as the ear.
it just can't be 5 stars.......2003-08-15
Okay, I have to be honest, I don't own these CDs, though I have listened to them a little, which is what's most important. What I simply must tell to the prospective buyer is that there is one part about 40 seconds into the scherzo of the g minor trio that is absolutely atrocious on the part of the violinist, where he (Isidore Cohen, who for the record I think has a nasty tone in general although many people would disagree) goes flatter and flatter on an upward run landing on the note of the climax of the section about halfway between two pitches! To be quite honest, it's absurd that they didn't do another take, because it's pretty painful, yet entertainingly bad, to listen to. If you can enjoy Isidore Cohen's tone, though, this should be a good buy overall.
Definitive Performances Of Dvorak's Piano Trios.......2001-12-08
This is yet another excellent compilation of the great recordings made by the Beaux Arts Trio when its lineup included Isidore Cohen as violinist and Bernard Greenhouse as cellist as well as pianist Menahem Pressler. These are lively, exciting performances replete with warmth and Slavic charm, gracefully played by these exceptional musicians. Of course, the highlight is their exquisite performance of the "Dumky" trio, but the others are equally compelling. This is one of the highlights of my CD collection of Dvorak's music; it should be yours too.

Dvorák's Trio in F minor, Op. 65, is quite simply the finest piano trio since Beethoven and a work you will fall in love with at first listen. It has been overshadowed by the later, more popular "Dumky" Trio, Op. 90, which is a pity because the earlier work is greater in every respect. Fortunately, you can make up your own mind with this excellent recording that presents Yo-Yo Ma in a chamber-music setting--one that suits him very well. His playing is both considered and considerate, and his burnished tone in the F-minor's slow movement is something to treasure. A wonderful disc. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
The Op. 65 trio will be a great discovery for many listeners.......2006-06-11
Except for a handful of works, Dvorak's chamber music output goes ignored on the concert stage. A memorable nickname always helps, as with the 'Dumky' trio Op. 90, but I agree with David Hurwitz that the earlier, but still very mature, Op. 65 is a greater, more exciting and engaging work. (Few would agree with him that it stands ahead of Brahms's three piano trios as the greatest written since Beethoven.) Ax, Kim, and Ma give their all to Op. 65, attacking it with exuberance and fire. Dvorak supplies plentiful melodies, and the result is a wonderful discovery.
The "Dumky" trio is a more reserved work, with more slow movements than fast. Here, for some reason, Ax and company lose their way a bit. They play with too much reserve and delicacy. Their 'Dumky' is one long rumination, nuanced to the point of tiresomeness. Others may like this approach better than I do--all three musicians are masters of their craft, after all--but I will keep this CD mostly for the earlier work. Sony's digital recording from 1988 could be much better. It sounds murky and harsh, especially at loud dynamics, and the piano is shallow and clangy. Your ears just have to adjust.
One of the most excellent Dvorak.......2001-01-03
I am really sad that Young-Uck Kim(Korean-American Violinist) doesn't like recording. It is a great loss that his recordings are so rare since he may be one of the greatest violinists alive. In this recording, Kim interepretes Dvorak as if he is Bohemian. So fascinating and beautiful. Yo-Yo Ma is not at his finest here though.
Bohemian Soul.......1998-11-06
This is the most exquisite Dvorak Trio I've ever listened to. Above all, Yong-Uck Kim's violin is delicate, emotional and graceful. Yoyo Ma is not showing his everything in this recording though.

This English ensemble scored with an excellent disc of Czech Trios by Smetana, Suk, and Novák (also for Naxos). They are just as good at playing Dvorák's music. The massive Trio in F Minor, Op. 65, all 42 minutes of it, is far less familiar than the Dumky (Dvorák's greatest trio). But if you have the patience for its discursive, leisurely development, you will be rewarded with a memorable experience in romantic chamber music, especially in this ardent, beautifully played performance. Despite the greater competition, the Dumky is a similar success, a well-organized conception that sings with disciplined fervor. Pianist John Lenehan's tone is particularly beautiful, but his string-playing colleagues are also very fine, even if the cello is sometimes a bit underbalanced in Op. 65. This well-recorded disc would be competitive at any price. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous music, performance.......2000-12-01
I had never heard the F minor trio and 5 seconds after the music began I dropped everything to focus on Dvorak. A sensuous piece, the playing is so lush you could sink into it, and the sound is excellent. The "Dumky" is also wonderfully played but is the runner-up piece on the disc, in my opinion. A huge bargain, you should be giving this disc to every music-lover you know.

Customer Reviews:
Superb Dvorák Trios by the Florestan Trio.......2005-01-15
This CD combines two rather different but equally marvelous piano trios by Dvorák--the dramatic, Brahmsian No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65 and the much more genial and identifiably Czech No. 4, in E minor, Op. 90, subtitled 'Dumky.' Dvorák wrote six piano trios but only four of them have come down to us. These last two are without doubt the best of those that remain.
The Third Trio was written in 1883 right about the time Dvorák's mother died. It is passionate, dramatic, tragic at times, and written mostly in Brahmsian terms (that is to say, in classical form and using Brahmsian formal, harmonic and contrapuntal gestures) and anticipates the great Seventh Symphony written the year afterward. It's a big, almost forty-minute piece, in four movements. The Florestan Trio, surely one of the great piano trios of our day, with its members Anthony Marwood, violin, Richard Lester, cello, and Susan Tomes, piano, play the work with a good deal of attention to the chiaroscuro effects inherent in the score. Although they are a seasoned group who have played together for many years, the Florestan members each play like the soloists they are so that there is plenty of evidence of individual thoughts about how things should proceed, but without the willfulness sometimes heard when soloists get together just for the occasion of making a recording. I'm particularly fond of Lester's juicy, warm cello sound. Listen about 2 minutes into the first movement of the F minor trio. Lovely. Tomes, well known from her valuable work with Domus, is a very sensitive ensemble player, but when required she can blaze with virtuosity as in the dramatic second movement. Marwood, who can play as sweetly as anyone, is notably rich and lyrical in the Adagio movement. The finale, Allegro con brio, is indeed played with abandon and excitement.
The 'Dumky' Trio is probably the most-played of Dvorák's trios and there are many outstanding recordings of it. This performance can stand toe to toe with any I've ever heard. The dumka, of course, was a quintessential Bohemian form that combined fast/happy sections with slow/sad ones. Incorporating this form into a classical trio required Dvorák to more or less invent a new form, and this he did. The trio has six movements, each a dumka. But it still manages to fall, roughly, into the four movements of a classical piano trio owing to the way the dumkas are arranged. By far the most striking is the third dumka--it is also seemingly the simplest--which combines a gorgeously vocal slow section alternating with polka sections. The Florestan impart the melancholy lyricism of the slow sections and then kick up their heels with the polkas. I actually think this performance outshines the classic Heifetz/Piatagorsky/Lateiner recording on RCA that has been the benchmark for this trio for many years. And it certainly is in better recorded sound. If this CD were an LP I suspect I would have worn out its grooves already. It's that good.
You cannot go wrong here.
