Customer Reviews:
The ideal Rachmaninov interpreter.......2005-12-09
This is the Rachmaninov cd you should listen to. Here Lugansky plays his favorite composer and it is immediately evident. The young Russian virtuoso seems here to mix Michelangeli's meticulous and fluent playing, Richter's great virtuosism and Gilels's magic tone. I've never listen to anyone playing the wonderful Préludes n.2.and n.7 op.23 and the Moment Musicaux op.16 n.4 and n.6 as fast, fluently and overall expressive as Lugansky's version even though i've to listen to Berezovsky's one. Anyway this record is a benchmark for all Rachmaniniov's interpreters.

uniquely revealing.......2007-02-11
This is my favourite Schubert's sonata and I own no less than over a dozen of different versions and to me this is the most satisfying if you like this sonata to be dark-hued. Above all, it goes to the heart and this is what matters. Very realistic recording.
A magnificently realized interpretation, great and essential.......2004-10-15
In the great Sonata in B-flat, Kovacevich gives hint that beyond the haunting tranquility of the piece is stillness, beyond the sorrow, a raging despair. Like Uchida, his Molto Moderato for example is slow in the Richter tradition, and yet unlike him, Kovacevich has subtly recognized and conveyed the frightening and barely repressed aggression. Uchida in comparision nearly shares Kovacevich's view, but on repeated listenings she strikes the ear as dwelling too dramatically on the despair and resignation, rendering a performance that sounds cold and hollow. Kovacevich's performance may project Schubert's despair, but it surpasses hers in that it also conveys the sweetness of existence, the anger that it may be so fleeting, and without Brendel's optimism, there is ultimate acceptance--Kovacevich's is the red-blooded and ultimately human performance, and as a wholly realized interpretation, it is successful beyond argument and essential to your collection. Not as an alternative but as comparison, I would recommend the greatest performance of another extreme, being Pollini's, for he sculpts this sonata into music of magnificent austerity. Both versions are so truly different, together they reveal Schubert's masterpiece as limitless and always sublime.

Customer Reviews:
A great musician, not only a virtuoso.......2005-10-24
Vladimir Horowitz is, perhaps, the last example of the true last romantic russian virtuoso. His execution is always interesting by a musical point of wiev. The composers are many and of varied historic periods, but the execution is always very appropriated in style and musical analisys. Specially the works by Scriabine and Rachmaninov have here an equilibrated treatment that shows the musical qualities over the technical power. An indispensable for all piano lovers and piano players.
Ca$hing in on Nostalgia.......2002-01-01
Despite having died over twelve years ago, Vladimir Horowitz remains a potent force in the ever-shrinking Classical music market. Since his death in 1989, Horowitz' complete recordings have been remastered and reissued, and a number of previously unreleased recordings have also surfaced.
The marketing gimmick behind the Original Jacket Collection is a simple one: ten CDs, with the music duplicating the original LP release, with the original liner notes and bearing the original LP covers (albeit in miniaturized form).
Horowitz was in his late prime during his Columbia (now Sony) years, 1962-1973. The performances in this box are rightfully legendary. Highlights include: loads of Chopin including the Sonata, Op. 35 (1962), a brooding Poloniase-Fantasie, Op. 61 (recorded live in 1966), an electrifying performance of the neglected Introduction & Rondo, Op. 16 (1971); Horowitz' own transcription of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 19; and the all Scarlatti, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, and Scriabin LPs. It is worth noting that most of these recordings were Grammy winners and have never been out of the catalogue since they were initially released.
That's part of the problem. Horowitz fans with sharp ears will detect that these are not new remasterings, they are straight transfers from Sony's 1993 Complete Masterworks Recordings reissue. In a number of cases here, such as in Schumann's Kreisleriana, alternate takes were used, which differ from the original LP issues. While the performances don't suffer from the alterations, should not Sony have done their homework and checked the CD remasterings against the original LPs?
Given that most of these CDs clock in at about 40 minutes, and that the potential CD playing time is twice that long, shoppers are advised to spend a few extra dollars and buy the 13-CD box of the Complete Masterworks Recordings, as they offer much greater value for the money. The 5-star rating is for performance quality only.

One of the best of the Masterworks series.......2007-07-06
Brilliant Classics' "Masterworks" series, if you can get them cheaply (and currently they go for about $1/CD from Amazon's France Web site), are a great way to amass a significant library of the works of several great computers. The production values and the performances themselves are uneven, and the interpretations are not always historically-informed (unlike the bulk of Brilliant's "Complete Editions" of the works of Bach and Mozart). But there are numerous gems in the rough in The Masterworks, and the economic value is unsurpassed, even if you were to throw away half of the CDs in each set.
You're unlikely to throw away much of this Schubert collection though. This seems to be the finest of the Masterworks sets, with a succession of solid, often first-rate performances of most of the major Schubert works. Here's what you get:
- The symphonies, performed by The Hanover Band in a historically-informed style. Very interesting performances perhaps marred by an odd recording balance that makes the woodwinds sound distant. Takes up four CDs
- The six Latin masses. Also the Deutsche Messe in the version with wind instruments. Five CDs in all
- Edison Denisov's completion of Schubert's unfinished dramatic work Lazarus (2 CDs, Helmuth Rilling's premier recording)
- The last four string quartets (including the Quartettsatz) with #9 thrown in. Also the octet, piano quintet ("The Trout"), string quintet and both piano trios. In short all the canonical chamber works. Performances are strong, and well recorded
- Two CDs of violin/piano duets, including Op. 137 and Op. 162
- 19 of the 21 "canonical" piano sonatas (missing #7 and #12) as well as the Moments Musicaux, Impromptus, German Dances, Wanderer Fantasy and several other piano works, 11 CDs in all. As with the chamber music, the performances and recordings are strong, often stunning
- Two CDs of piano duets, including the Divertissements and D. 617
- Song cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Winterreise, Schwanengesang, and four CDs of standalone songs, including such "standards" as Erlkönig and Gretchen am Spinnrade. The singers are a bit uneven here, ranging from standouts Robert Holl, Deitrich Fischer-Dieskau and John Shirley-Quirk to the somewhat shrill Arleen Augér
Missing from the collection is Rosamunde, and a number of famous songs: Die Forelle (The Trout), Death and the Maiden, Ellens Gesang III (the so-called Ave Maria, D. 839), Der Hirt auf dem Felsen and Der Wanderer. But you do have almost all the important instrumental works, and most of the vocal works generally considered to be essential, with some padding added in the form of minor works such as the parochial Deutsche Messe, the German Dances, and the modernist-informed completion of Lazarus by the 20th Century Russian composer Denisov.
As with the other Masterworks sets, there are no program notes. You'll need to do your own research. Answers.com is a good starting point for Schubert compositions. There are also no song texts or translations provided, so again you'll need to track down your own. Try "The Lied and Art Song Texts Page" for lieder lyrics and translations. Hunt down a good price on this collection, browsing one of Amazon's European sites if necessary, and treat yourself to many hours of lovely music for the cost of a modest night out.
Will not buy this.......2007-03-16
I can't see D965 or D945 on this 40 disks worth of Schubert. Bizarre! There are so many great songs missing it scares me.
Worth it!.......2006-12-19
One of the best in "The Masterpices" series. Many of the discs (the symphonies in particular) were licensed from Nimbus and other full-line labels. Not all that long ago these discs would have set you back $18 to $20 a piece. That said, I still wouldn't part with my Hyperion collection. 40 CD's at this price... you can't go wrong.
Great way to jumpstart a schubert collection.......2006-12-19
Hartmut Holl, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Stephanie Brown, and Jaime Laredo as well as the Stuttgart Bach Collegium performing Schubert are hardly "left-behind artists and ensembles" as the previous naysayer states. These are licensed from major label releases and from the original masters issued at a bargain price, especially for the number of discs you get. Sound quality ranges from good to excellent. Good for all Schubertians and anyone who wants to jumpstart a Schubert collection.
Better to Pick a Few First-rate Performances.......2006-11-14
This is a bargain in dollar/listening time ratio, but who cares? There are many second-rate performances by left-behind artists and ensembles. Obviously the economics of resurrecting disks that don't require royalties has been the driving factor of selection. (On the other hand, the complete edition boxed sets of Bach and Mozart, which you'll find if you look, are stupendous successes artistically.)

A superb artist!.......2005-08-17
Andras Schiff shows once more why he is on the top of the ten best pianist in the world. His impressive phrasing, his superb expressiveness and supreme panache have deserved to him the most outstanding comments all around the world.
Nowadays he may be the most eloquent pianist in which Schubert concerns. His multiple conversations with Sandor Vegh, his personal efforts for several Schubert Complete Sonatas around the world, and conferences are undeniable evidences for his profound devotion for this Austrian composer.
Go for this album. You will be surprised if it's the first time you listen him and convince by yourself about his Haydn and Mozart too.
Splendid Performances of Schubert by Schiff but...........2005-02-13
I concur with an earlier reviewer who wasn't impressed with the sound quality of these early 1990s digital recording of some of Schubert's most familiar shorter works for the piano. However, I still highly recommend it based solely on Andras Schiff's beautiful playing. I've had this compilation sitting on my shelves for over a year and finally had a chance to listen to it a few days ago; despite the recording's flaws, Schiff's playing is majestic, poetic, demonstrating his empathy for Schubert's music. Both sets of Impromptus are played with ample dignity and grace; the same holds true for the Landler (waltzes) and Moments Musicaux. It's a pity that Decca's usually high fidelity standards weren't in evidence here, or else I would say that this two CD set would deserve recognition as among the finest recordings of these Schubert pieces currently available.
Peaceful...........2000-12-16
Here, Andras Schiff performs Schubert like he performs Bach, neither brashly nor flamboyantly. It is relaxed and easy to listen to, even on more tense pieces. But the slower, softer pieces are slightly better performances (on a CD of near perfection!) The addition of several lesser known, delightful pieces makes this album a must-have.
Great Performance ruined by bad recording.......2000-10-14
I can't stand it when recording engineers go out of their way to ruin recordings. For some reason, the engineer for this recording chose to place some microphones very close to the piano, and some far. The result is very unnatural sound. I wish I could find a good recording of the Musical Moments, but have struck out twice. (My other recording is with Lupu, which is also a superb performance but a lousy recording - early digital). I wonder if Schiff is aware of the sabotage done to his art by over zealous recording engineers. As far as the music goes, I find Schiff to be one of the best Schubert interpreters, which is why I bought this CD. Schiff plays this music superbly as expected.

The Question of Authenticity.......2005-02-08
Jan Smaczny’s accompanying text to this Beethoven-Schubert recital, in many ways exemplary in its lucidity, throws up two issues which are, in my opinion, highly controversial, although Smaczny himself seems to take them for granted. One of these is the question whether the “fortepiano”, the historical predecessor of today’s “pianoforte”, is really not superior to its modern counterpart. Smaczny writes, “Compared with the modern piano, the fortepiano brings greater clarity to Schubert’s textures.” Perhaps only a pianist can judge whether that is strictly true; as a listener I must say that of all the historical instruments I have heard, the fortepiano is, to my mind, the most difficult one to listen to: its wooden sound with its accompaniment of mechanical noises compares unfavourably with the clarity and purity of the modern piano, and I find it requires quite a mental effort to make the leap back to the first half of the nineteenth century and to listen to this sound the way it must have been (Melvyn Tan here plays a modern copy of an instrument by Nanette Streicher from 1814). It certainly makes one listen to Schubert (and Beethoven) with new ears, so to speak, but I rather doubt that their music actually benefits from this “primitive” sound. (And I say that as someone who is a wholehearted supporter of the “early music movement”.)
The other issue raised by Smaczny’s text is that of “authenticity”. Speaking of the first of Schubert’s “3 Klavierstücke” D.946, Smaczny blandly states, “Schubert later cancelled the A flat interlude, but in the interests of authenticity it is included in this recording.” Now, I have no objection to anyone playing discarded movements, but Smaczny’s statement seems to imply that not even Schubert himself was “authentic” when he deleted part of what he had originally written! Something is surely wrong here. The “early music movement” has had a tendency to go back “to the roots”, which has no doubt been beneficial to all concerned, but to deny a composer the right to revise one of his own compositions, that is going too far! If Schubert felt that the piece was better without the A flat section, then playing it the way Schubert finally left it is at least as “authentic” as including the deleted section. I think it would be better to avoid the term “authenticity” altogether when talking about these issues.
Having said all that, let me just add that Melvyn Tan’s performance is a good one. He seems to have made each individual movement his own, so to speak, and his variations of “piano” and “forte”, his rubato and his changes of mood are all convincing, demonstrating that it is not without reason that he has such a good reputation as a harpsichordist and fortepiano virtuoso. The recorded sound is accurate, which means that the instrument is comparatively quiet when set against a modern concert piano, and that there is always a lot of mechanical noise to be heard (or overheard).
My frank opinion is that if you are new to this repertoire, you would do better to listen to it on a modern instrument first. As a “connoisseur” you might like to come back to this “museum” sound to get a feeling of what the music might have sounded like nearly 200 years ago.

Customer Reviews:
From the review in The Sunday Times.......2006-12-26
"Melvyn Tan's collection of Schubert and Beethoven piano pieces demonstrates that the former had nothing to fear from his idol in the composition of miniatures. Apart from the 'Andante favori,' the original slow movement of the 'Waldstein' sonata and one of Beethoven's most 'Schubertian' inspirations, Tan has chosen the bagatelle 'Fur Elise' among other pieces, which suits the tone of his copy of an 1814 Nanette Streicher instrument.
"EMI's recording finds more depth in the fortepiano tone than I would expect to hear at the Wigmore Hall. Tan's straightforward style evokes the homespun atmosphere of the Schubertiads, for which the 'Moments Musicaux' and the three 'Klavierstuecke,' D946, were almost certainly composed. In his fleet-fingered, rhythmically sprightly way, Tan plays with considerable charm."
