Customer Reviews:
POWER AND POETRY.......2001-12-19
When Garrick Ohlsson won top prize at the Chopin Competition (1970) in Warsaw (with, appropriately enough, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Witold Rowicki), he astounded the musical world in very much the same way Van Cliburn did when he seized the '57 Tchaikovsky award.
It is fitting, obviously, as part of his complete traversal of Chopin's piano works, that Mr. Ohlsson now return to the concertos, and to the other works for piano and orchestra--- and return he does with a wisdom and impressive emotional spectrum that raises these compositions to rarified heights.
Frankly, the set is self-recommending: Ohlsson establishes, especially in the concertos, an awesome balance between their masculine and feminine natures--- his piano centrally focused and magical, lushly supported, again, by the WPO, but this time under Kazimierz Kord. Now, however, over thirty years later, Ohlsson's maturity as a pianist adds a decided "gravitas" to his Chopin interpretations, as well as a shimmering spontaneity, a sense of abandon and cheekiness, an exquisitely rich, full-blooded romanticism, and a mercurial sparkle that, taken altogether, reveal him as one of our foremost and rewarding Chopinists.
This set is, strangely enough, quite essential not only for Ohlsson's phenomenal concerto performances, but for the other "less regarded" works, as well. Yes, without a doubt! To these well-worn ears, never has the Variations for Piano and Orchestra in B-flat, Op. 2 been more touchingly conceived, the Fantasia on Polish Airs, Op. 13 more spiritual in feeling, the Krakowiak, Op. 14 more overtly joyful, the Andante Spianato and Grand Polonaise, Op. 22 such an exceptional revelation of divine melancholy in tandem with rousing exhuberance.
And what a glorious sound world the Arabesque engineers have given Ohlsson and the WPO! One feels surrounded by a comforting warmth, a musical security, a tangible "wholeness." Mr. Ohlsson's piano is always completely realistic, each note a gift, chordal work full and flush--- and the instrument placed nicely forward, yet well-integrated.

lots of fun, better phrasing than volume 1.......2005-05-04
i like this record mostly. my absolute favorite on here is the giuliani grand overture op.61...romero's playing here is absolutely goregous...breathtaking. also exceptional are the mudarra and the rodrigo and scarlatti. its only like 7 bucks so just buy it. some people complained of weird phrasing on vol. 1 of this series, but i am glad to say that this problem isnt really present here. the only thing that i dislike really is guardame las vacas...i feel that he sacrafices good phrasing for the sake of a display of speed...such playing isnt needed for a traditional piece like this.

Full Potential.......2005-01-09
Volume 9 of the Naxos Mozart Piano Concerto edition was recorded in January, 1991, and the team, consisting of soloist Jenö Jandó and the chamber orchestra Concentus Hungaricus, here directed by Mátyás Antal, had obviously by this time become so welded together that the production offers an impressive piece of cooperative harmony, apparently with no competition between the soloist and the orchestra; instead, both achieve their full potential on a recording that is remarkable for its clarity, presence and purity. The programme chosen is also very interesting, with Concerto No. 26, the one usually known as the “Coronation” concerto, offering some real fireworks. As Mozart did not actually complete writing out the solo part, I can only assume that Jenö Jandó here plays the version by André; this is something that Keith Anderson’s otherwise acceptable notes fail to mention. Concerto No. 5 is the first that Mozart actually composed from original ideas and is mainly remarkable for its being a complete piano concerto “from scratch”, so to speak, without Mozart apparently having any period of trial and error to get there. Finally, the Rondo KV. 382, a replacement last movement for Concerto No. 5, is one of the all-time great hits of Mozart, being a set of variations full of humour, playfulness and fantasy. I was able to compare this version with the competition from BMG’s budget label Arte Nova (played by Matthias Kirschnereit and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra); although the Arte Nova has a slight edge on the recorded sound (both discs are very good), I felt that Jandó and Antal captured the spirit of the Rondo a little better, with some energetic, jaunty playing that really lets you understand why Mozart was so popular, not only as a composer, but as a performer of his own works.

Backhaus was among the giants of 20th-century keyboard artists, renowned for his solid--some would say stolid--Beethoven and Brahms interpretations. The younger Backhaus was a more overtly virtuosic pianist with a wide repertory. This invaluable Pearl set covers his British recordings, starting in 1908 when he was only 24, and it includes composers and works he abandoned in later years when he pared his programs down to essential masterworks. So we get his only recordings of Rachmaninoff, whom he admired as the greatest among living piano composers, along with Bach, Scarlatti, and others. Backhaus's dazzling virtuosity can be heard in his abridged Brahms Paganini Variations, the Liszt, La Campanella, with its marvelously even runs, and the Weber, Perpetuum Mobile, with precise articulation at fast speeds, among many other examples. Some of his early electrical recordings fill out disc two, sounding fresher than most of the acoustics. Seth Winner's transfers on both well-filled discs are uniformly fine. Collectors of historical recordings will want these rarities. --Dan Davis

Superb Performances @ Bargain Price.......2004-07-28
I have been buying the Naxos Mozart Piano Concertos with pianist Jeno Jando (accompanied by the Concentus Hungaricus conducted by Matyas Antal) as individual discs for some time now, and I must admit that they have all been superb in both sound and performances. I happen to own many fine performances of the Mozart Piano Concerti, but the Naxos/Jando is the one I keep returning to over and over again. If I had to live with only one set of Mozart's Piano concertos (dread the thought) it would surely be the Naxos. Grab them all and endulge in great music performed with virtuosity by both the soloist and orchestra, beautifully recorded, and at a price that won't break your wallet.
Naxos, like Mozart, is a rare, magical find!!.......2003-01-28
This set is undoubtedly one of the best values I've ever seen!!! On 5 discs, we get Mozarts late piano concertos (volume #2 contains the early works). Jeno Jando and the Concentus Hungaricus sound great in their performance (1989-1990 recordings) of these masterpieces.
Like the other reviewer, I agree that this is definitely a classical interpretation and I will go so far as to suggest that those who like a deep, romantic feel probably will find this lighter interpretation lacking. The piano is sharp, defined and aggressive in the 'regal' sense. Tempo changes are kept to a minimum and the orchestra is always crisp and defined.
What I noticed immediately about these recordings is the unbelievable compliment of the Jando/Concentus combination, not only in style, but in volume. These discs are extremely well-balanced both in sound and mood. As a consequence, most music reviews that I consulted in my decision to get this set, rated it very high and as a 'best buy' of sorts. After listening to this set many times, they obviously knew what they were talking about. In terms of price, preformance and beauty, this value is not to be missed!!!
Great Set!.......2002-07-24
See my review under Volume 2 of this set. I cannot speak highly enough about the music, as well as the performances.

Customer Reviews:
Not quite there!!!.......2002-04-06
These performances are just average!I have recordings of heifetz on tapes and they are great.I have also the exquisite performances by Perlman and Ashkenazy, perhaps the best! Here Kremer and Argerich (individually they may be great!)do not seem to be combining at all.added to this the flow of the music is interrupted by quixotic changes in tempo and dynamics.just not inspiring.Particularly the SPRING sonata is a big let down. Here Perlman and Ashkenazy combine perfectly to give a soaring lyrical reading.Just matchless!i would recommend The perlman and Ashkenazy as the best choice for these sonatas.
Stunning, enlivened presentation.......2001-09-05
Two soloist who perform well together (perhaps one of the best pairings in modern recordings) are Argerich and Kremer. Both are strong musicians, and often they can overwhelm others who are less competitive about their music. Not that these two compete with each other for supremacy. Instead, they blend their aggressiveness, producing lively, full-bodied performances where piano and violin challenge each other, then submit gracefully to the other's lead. This is Beethoven as you'd expect/want it to be played -- dramatic, bold, but then a little softened, coaxing out the pretty parts. The Spring and Kreutzer sonatas, probably the best known, are gems of this collection. All ten sonatas are included (which are also available on separate CDs but the whole collection is much more economically priced!). Listening to all ten is a journey through Beethoven's chamber music. Don't miss these performances!
GET THEM!.......2001-04-17
If I could have two choices of music to have on a deserted island, this would be my second choice. Turandot with Mehta conducting would be the first. Kremer and Argerich play these Beethoven Violin Sonatas with so much passion, joy, and drive that I am completely dazzled. They show me a brilliant universe which I have rarely experienced.
Kremer and Argerich play all the tracks of the four CDs except for three on the 2nd CD. Menuhin and Kempff play variations on theme of The Marriage of Figaro and Rondo in G major. And on third track Garret and Canino play Six German Dances.
An 85-page booklet comes with the set. It describes the pieces in an academic manner.
Wow..........2000-12-13
I am pained to admit that I have (up until now) only heard Gidon Kremer performing contemporary pieces. I have truly been missing out. Kremer's performance on this boxed set is impeccable - even the die-hard Beethoven fans will be pleased with his work on this album. Unlike the recent Mutter recordings of the sonatas, Kremer performs the pieces much as Beethoven intended (which in my mind is a better way to go than what Mutter did). I highly recommend this.
Review from Gramaphone.......1999-03-27
I havn't actually heard these recordings but from the review #6-8 recieved in Gramophone, they probably exceed or match any other recorded performances of these wonderful works. Gramophone wrote: "the 3 sonatas are irresistibly lively and individual spirits in the hands and imaginations of Agerich and Kremer."
Gramophone goes on and on raving about these performances of excellent musicality and ensemble playing. In their "Classical Good CD Guide 1999" they a two out of three G's (What they use instead of stars), tied for highest with Heifitz. I am planning to but these records myself very soon once I have some extra $ for them.

We remember Rachmaninov today mostly for the music he wrote. But as this set quickly reveals, he was one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century, able to play his own music and a great variety of others with tremendous personality and a technique that is still astonishing. There's no point picking highlights from this set, since they are everywhere. But if you've never heard Rachmaninov play Schumann's Carnaval, try starting there for one of the most imaginative recreations of a piece of music ever recorded. The set also includes Rachmaninov's only recordings as a conductor in two of his own major works. --Leslie Gerber

At the time of this review, whenever you search for a phrase such as "Rachmaninoff Complete", amazon's search engine always lands on this out-of-print recording (ASIN: B000003FB7) . It's also no fun to see that it costs more than a hundred bucks! But if you type "B000A2AD2S" in the search box, you'll see the new reissued set for half the price. It's the exact same 10 CDs. Just the cover art is different.
Unfortunately, this situation is a common pattern with amazon's listing of classical music: when you use your intuition and type in common-sense search phrases for Bach, Mozart, etc, you often get the ultra-expensive out-of-print ships-in-4-weeks items as the default item. It takes a lot of detective work to find the newer reissue recordings. For example, to find the new reissue without knowing the ASIN, I had to enter just "Rachmaninoff" in the search text (deliberately left the word "Complete" out of the search) so it would no longer lock me into this item page that you're looking at and give me a full listing instead. I then sorted the listing by "Original Release Date" and found it on the 2nd page. There's no picture on the new item which doesn't give you any confidence that you found the right one. Don't worry, B000A2AD2S is what you want.
For product research, it's good to have both ASIN product listings because the older out-of-print B000003FB7 has the sound samples (and also all the helpful customer reviews) while the new B000A2AD2S has the better price and availability.
To make things even more confusing, the amazon staff sometimes copies entire customer reviews to the new item which would then make THIS review seem strangely out of place. If that happens and I notice it, I will delete this review for B000003FB7.
(In another strange twist, amazon searches in rock/pop usually points you to the newer cheaper remastered/repackaged/reissued/whatever of a particular recording. I don't know why it works the opposite way in classical music?!?!)
6, or Even 7 Stars!.......2005-06-04
Hofmann hit the nail on the head when he said Rachmaninov had "arms of steel and heart of gold". From this album, we can have a clear picture of Rachmaninov's vison of music, of his musical mind and thoughts and moreover his own playing.
While Kempff's playing would often remind of the protestant church music, Rachmaninov bring to our mind the chanting of the Orthodox church, which is much thicker and darker. On top of that, his playing is orchestral which is so powerful and full colours. Yet, it is nothing like Richter, where often the whole piece is just one phrase.
Here each piece has it's own life and identity each with a focal point. It is water tight compact and yet very much natural and alive, never as hair-raising as Horowitz. But, it is not natural in Arrau's way. It is somewhere in between, closer to Argerich but with more consistency and depth. And like Casals' playing, it keeps our attention from the first note up to its focal point until its very end. But unlike Casals, he touches our hearts. It is very emotional but never to the point of being sentimental-- the performance of his own concertos, for example, can tell you that.
Sure, he did have fingers of steel that helped him to bring out whatever colour or atmostphere as appropriate. And despite that fact that there are some minor alterations on the scores like his Chopin, he is one of the few pianists who could really show you every note on the score counts and, above all, how it counts...
His Chopin may not be as neurotic as Cortot. Nonetheless, he sheds light on the dark and nervous side of Chopin so well: a very throbbing interpretation that is so unique. We also have him accompanying Kreisler on some violin sonatas, something that one could turn to time and again, year after year. What a great chamber musician and accompanist he was...!
The recorded sound of the CDs do vary, and some are more acceptable than the others. But for genuine music lovers, they should be able to get over this very soon: how else would they benefit from one of the greatest legacies of a genuinely great musician!
A must have for Piano and classical music lovers.......2005-04-04
To respond to a review about the sound quality-for those people who have no experience with historical performances i.e cortot-hofmann-etc these discs are for the most part much better recorded. There are the inevitable pops and hisses but if these things disturb you, or you cant get past them, then you shouldnt be listening to this kind of thing anyway. the importance here is in the playing, and the playing is extra ordinary. I you want to buy a disc for the reperatoire then i can think of hundreds of performances that will satisfy, but only people with a true interest to hear and study these pieces will be beyond satisfied. I know that may not sound like a lot of fun, but these discs are fun, great, and for me, almost too good to be true. Again, if sound disturbs you, then you may be listening to the music for the wrong reasons. Take from it the playing, the revelations that Rach provides to his pieces, and how fortunate we are that it sounds as good as it does.
Ah, Rachmaninoff, brilliant star of music, how we adore you.......2003-09-14
The music of Rachmaninoff is beyond words, furthermore, beyond imagination. He was a genius, no doubt, and nobody will ever understand how incredibly lucky we are to be blessed with his compositions. Furthermore, it is truly astonishing to hear Rachmaninoff play his own work. There is nothing so beautiful on this earth and there never will be.
Review from a spoiled modern listener.......2003-07-13
I'll admit that I'm a spoiled modern listener, accustomed to having the bang and hiss edited out of a recording, and it took me a while to warm to these. Rachmaninoff's performances are splendid, but if you can hardly hear them over the cacophony of background noise, what's the use? His performance of his own, often overlooked Concerto No. 4 finally made me sit up and listen, even though I've owned two versions of this piece for a number of years (Ashkenazy & Wild).
