It's almost impossible not to like the music of Steve Reich. His brand of minimalism does involve repetitions, but he is savvy enough to employ on-going phase-shifting of musical elements. His music flows and changes as it flows. Music for Mallet Instruments, Voices, and Organ (1973) is quintessential Reich, with the voices here giving the score its very human touch. Piano Phase (1967) is more atonal, with two pianos playing the same series of notes, but out of phase with one another. Sextet (1974) and Octet (1979) employ the same techniques, but you'll find Octet the friendlier of the two. This disc is highly recommended. --Paul Cook
