5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2007-01-10

My husband and I have loved the Beaux Arts Trio for many years and were very happy to find the edition of the Beethoven piano trios. The interpretations are superb, the playing is masterful and flawless. As long as the pianist Menahem Pressler will remain with the Trio, we will always try to hear them in concerts or on CD. We own most of their recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven shines.......2006-09-24

When one thinks of Beethoven, one often imagines the grand symphonic sound. This collection of piani trios, however, is a feather in the wind. They are beautiful and warm. There is room to breathe as one basks in the sheer genius of this composer's gift of melody and composition.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and eternally listenable.......2006-04-11

I decided one day to look into string chamber music, and lucked out completely by getting this five-disk series.

I was not familiar with these pieces and am still amazed that such sounds were ever created or could be conceived of.

I particularly love the third CD in this production.

I would love to put the first few chords on Trio 7 on my cell phone, it would be so superior to everybody else's little ditties that we all suffer through!

I have listened to this CD for a couple years now and do not tire of it.

4 out of 5 stars Trios and music education.......2006-02-26

I have become interested in trios since we had a visit this year of a wonderful trio that played Haydn, Brahms, and Schubert. I realized here was a whole area I had missed. Since then I have been making up for it. I am learning much about various composers I already thought I understood fairly well. What has been most surprising is the function of music in the home -- the market these pieces were primarily written for. With that in mind, it is certainly interesting to imagine what a home must have been like in the evening with some friends playing these pieces. They must have been fairly accomplished or these would not have gone very well. They are challenging. What does that say about the way people thought? How did music influence their imaginations and their reasoning? (The Mozart Effect). I find that even though I enjoy these what makes them worth having and listening to is this bit of cultural imagining I add to listening to them. That said, I have not figured out yet if I have a favorite. I know the Schubert was the favorite of the cellist that recently visited and he explained why. But that was from the point of view of a person playing. Otherwise, I wonder if these are more like baseball. They can be really boring if you are not in the game.

3 out of 5 stars Caution On This Set.......2006-02-21

The piano is not balanced with the violin and cello, it drowns them out. The violin at times is quite muted and the cello is often indistinct. Listen to the samples critically before buying. I found the same problem on another Philips set of Haydn Piano Trios.

In the main, the youthful Beethoven chamber music collaborations between Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the late Jacqueline du Pré are characterized by broad, liberally fluctuating tempos, ripeness of tone, and a tendency to place expression ahead of stylistic considerations. Zuckerman's sweet vibrato, for instance, seems misplaced in Beethoven's terse, combative syntax (the earlier trios and violin sonatas, for example). Likewise, du Pré's throbbing solo lines impose a late-Romantic patina on the music that some listeners will find more appropriate to Arensky or Glazunov. More often than not, Daniel Barenboim's piano provides the decisive voice, by way of setting tempos and effecting transitions.

While the leaner, more economically expressive Abegg Trio (Tacet) and Vienna Piano Trio (Nimbus) Beethoven Trio offerings better reflect the composer's headlong brio and nervous energy, the Barenboim-Zuckerman-Du Pré team oozes sheer musicality and involvement in every bar. For this reason, one might well prefer Zuckerman and Barenboim's overwrought rapport in the Violin Sonatas to the violinist's tighter RCA remakes with Marc Neikrug at the piano. Du Pré's tragic illness prevented her and Barenboim from tackling the Cello Sonatas in the studio. Happily, their exciting, communicative live 1970 Edinburgh Festival traversals (plus the variation sets) were broadcast by the BBC and captured in excellent sound. So was a touchingly indulgent Tchaikovsky Trio preserved from one of Du Pré's final concerts, included as both a bonus and a memento. Tully Potter's excellent booklet notes give equal time to music and artists, and rightly discuss the performances in the context of their time. It's good to have these recordings gathered in a budget-priced, space-saving box. --Jed Distler

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars With minor reservations, "excellent".......2004-05-16

As noted above, this 9 CD set resulted from the youthful collaboration of Barenboim, du Pre (soon to wed Barenboim) and Zukerman. Clearly Barenboim is the driving force. As the info booklet asks: "Would Beethoven have approved of what Barenboim does here? Perhaps not, although he would surely have applauded the young man's courage".

Sadly, du Pre's illness (she had MS, forcing her retirement in 1973 and ultimately causing her untimely death) seriously limited the collaboration. Because her illness prevented a studio recording, the cello sonatas are from 1970 live recordings taped by the BBC. The audience noise is distracting, and I simply cannot understand why the coughs and chair scrapings could not have been edited out.

Barenboim and co really do drag out the slow movements; sometimes to good effect, and sometimes too much in my view. For example, the third movement of the Archduke Trio goes for 12:07 on the Naxos recording but extends to 16:02 here (but this one is still a better rendition).

To fill out the last CD, EMI includes Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op 50 (taped from a live performance in Tel Aviv in 1972), which is not in the same league as Beethoven's (but I guess they had to do something with the space).

My main complaint is that the thick 3-language info booklet is devoted entirely to the history of the performers and includes not a single word about the music itself!

That said, I am still very glad that I bought this set.

5 out of 5 stars The Beaux Arts Trio At The Height Of Its Artistry.......2001-11-11

Simply the finest recordings I have heard of Beethoven's piano trios. The chemistry amongst cellist Bernard Greenhouse, pianist Menachem Pressler and violinist Isidore Cohen is the finest I've heard from any trio. These performances are replete with ample warmth and grace. Although these aren't state of the art recordings from Philips, the sound quality is excellent, even from the late 1970's analogue recordings that comprise part of this set. Anyone looking for a first rate collection of Beethoven's piano trios will not be disappointed with this splendid set.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Beaux Arts Trio.........2000-06-13

The Beaux Arts Trio continues to be one of the best chamber music groups around. I have several recordings from them, this is my favorite. I have to say that this set may have been my most worthwhile music investment. I urge anyone who enjoys Beethoven and The Beaux Arts Trio to purchase this cd set, it is worth its weight in gold!

Trio Fonteney is an excellent example of musicians who play their instruments better than they play music. They make a consistently good sound, and they play together with impressive precision. They also rush through nearly everything in this set as though they have no interests except the sound, the precision, and conserving studio time. No matter how well they are recorded--and they are recorded very well--these performances don't convey the musical content of Beethoven's Trios. At full price the Borodin Trio still reigns supreme in this music (Chandos), and the Naxos set by the Stuttgart Piano Trio gives everyone a run for their money. --Leslie Gerber

Maybe these performers don't elicit the last ounce of pathos from the trios as some ensembles, but that was never their intent. These are simply the best performances of the trios available. Other groups (e.g. Stern/Istomin/Rose) may outshine Kempff, et al. here or there, but no other ensemble conveys the joy of the early works and the sublime beauty of the later works with such light-heartedness and dignity as Kempff, Fournier, and Szeryng. In short, this is joyous music-making. Buy this set!

5 out of 5 stars The standard to judge others by.......2006-06-16

So far as chamber music played by American musicians goes, CBS/Sony has an honorable history. They still keep in print the vigorous, stimulating trio recordings of Istomin-Stern-Rose. I agree with almost everything Mr. Lipscomb says in his long review below, but unlike him I really like all-star trios. In this case all three musicians manage to balance their viruoso tendencies with the needs of an ensemble. What his means is that each line--piano, violin, cello--is exciting wihtout being overshadowing.

In both the Archduke and ghost trios I have keep my eyes open since the mid-Sixties for more satisfying performances (these date from 1966 and 1970) without success. Critically, I'd say the "Ghost" perfomrance is the real winner in terms of tension and drama--there's real mystery and suspense in the ghostly variations of the second movement. The "Archduke" isn't the last word in intensity, even though Istomin-Stern-Rose do surpass Ashkenazy-Perlman-Harrell in their EMI recording. Sadly, the sonics here are wiry and edgy; I hope the latest reissue, which I don't own, has been improved.

        5 out of 5 stars Expansive.......2005-09-08

Symphonies are a big deal. Symphonies are time-consuming and expensive to produce. They are the works composers slave over to both define themselves to the masses as well as to keep the bucks rolling in from their benefactors.

I think of the chamber works as the more personal, more intimate pieces that the composers write more for their own enjoyment and for the enjoyment by their musician and composers friends. Don't get me wrong, nobody loves the Beethoven symphonies or concertos more than I do. But there's a time and place for the more intimate of Beethoven's works. This CD will make you a big fan of the piano trios. There is a good balance between the three instruments. Some have commented that having three virtuosos causes some tension, a competitive vibe between the performers. Maybe so but I wasn't aware of it, I thought the performances were all incredible and there was good communication between the musicians, nobody stepping on any one else's toes. In particular, the lyricism of the slow movements are rendered with an affecting warmth. The eerie opening of the Ghost Trio gave me goose bumps, and the expansive grandiosity of the Archduke revved me up almost as much as the Emperor Concerto. Buy it and thank me later.

4 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2004-05-16

I first bought these performances on Columbia LPs back in the 1970's - they were my first recordings of the works and I played them to death. From the first moment I heard the beautifully spacious Adagio of the Archduke, it has remained my favorite piano trio (although, of course, Schubert's op. 100, the Ravel, and the Brahms #2 aren't very far behind in my affections).

Once thoroughly familiar with the music, I started to notice a few shortcomings in these performances. Like most "all-star" trio ensembles, one player tends to dominate. With the old Cortot-Thibaud-Casals, it was always the cellist. Here it is Isaac Stern - but at least we don't get the spotlight-hugging free-for-all of the old Rubinstein-Heifetz-Feuermann. In some recordings, one player is so emotionally neutral as to spoil the over-all effect - such for me was the case with the violinist in the Kempff-Szeryng-Fournier set.

Unlike a string quartet, the piano trio is often the province of marquee soloists who don't play chamber music very often: they tend to ham it up or simply go their own way. I am sometimes reminded of three spinning tops that only randomly bump into one another. Such for me are the Barenboim-Zukerman-du Pre and Ashkenazy-Perlman-Harrell readings. And, to a certain extent, these Istomin-Stern-Rose sound that way, too. But "full-time" trio ensembles aren't always the best alternative: I have always found the Beaux Arts Trio to be mundane, unimaginative and rather insensitive. What to do?

On the advice of a fellow chamber music fancier, I bought a hard-to-find import set on TelDec LPs in 1976 while visiting that mecca of classical record shops, the long-gone and much-missed Discophile in Greenwich Village. It featured a group I had never heard of before. Their few records are still much-prized among collectors and are rarely seen on the second-hand market: they are no doubt hoarded by those lucky enough to own them. I am speaking of the Trio di Trieste, with pianist Dario de Rosa, violinist Renato Zennatovich, and Libero Lana on cello.

The Trio di Trieste "Archduke" is simply one for the ages. Hearing it is like standing outside the Gates of Heaven and listening to three Angels engaged in rarified conversation. Their Adagio is incredibly spacious and heartfelt, the Scherzo has a unique rhythmic zest, and the finale features the most imaginatively nuanced playing I have ever heard. It was coupled with a "Ghost" Trio that surpasses even my cherished Busch Trio recording.

Hopefully, this recording - in beautiful 1954 mono sound - will find its way onto CD from a label like Testament. For me, it's THE recording to own if you're having only one.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, intimate, chamber music.......2002-02-26

Beethoven was the master of every type of music he composed. Piano Trios, written for piano, violin and cello, demonstrate Beethoven at his most intimate. These are his two best trios, on a well-played, well-recorded and well-priced disc.
The Ghost trio has a spooky melody (which you may have heard even if you haven't heard the piece) in the low range of the piano, hence the name.
A wonderful addition to anyone's collection, especially at such a bargain price.

        5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2001-09-02

Archduke is one of my favorite Beethoven pieces. I frequently listen to this CD before turning in for the night. The piano playing is beautiful and if you're interested in hearing a softer side of Beethoven this CD definitely fits the bill. Very enjoyable.

Glenn Gould's playing is so treasured that CD publishers have been looking for anything of his they can find. These treasures, dredged from the CBC archives and Gould's own collection, offer some fresh material. The Beethoven trios, broadcast in 1954, don't sound great, but they are fine performances and show Gould as a fine chamber music collaborator. The piano pieces, from 1952, sound somewhat better and are played straightforwardly, without the eccentric ideas that crept into Gould's playing later in his career. This disc is probably for Gould fans only, but it should delight them. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars EARLY GOULD...THE ONLY RECORDING OF BEETHOVEN'S OP. 101..........2006-06-04

Gould's early work is remarkable. He already had his exquisite timing; moreover, his digital dexterity was absolutely miraculous: he played things as he did because HE COULD do it. None of the great pianists really had GG's gift.

Now, with Beethoven I've long been exclusively a Kempff fan. Kempff had great control and expression, plus he had a real insight into Beethoven's musical architechtonics. Gould has been damned for his vibrant Mozart and his peculiar Beethoven. But I have to say that I prefer GG's Mozart to anybody else's; plus, now I'm getting the vision of his Beethoven.

GG's recordings of Beethoven's late sonatas were done early in his career. Here, the Op. 101 was done in 1952 prior to his great Goldberg's recording of 1955. This is the only performance of GG's B's Op. 101 available. The wonderful Opp. 109-11 were done in 1956. They're incredible, and now I actually prefer them to Kempff's readings.

        This is real art.
