Album Description
Zanana (za-NAH-nah) is an electro-acoustic chamber music duo featuring Kristin Norderval, (voice) and Monique Buzzarté (trombone) collaboratively composing and performing improvised music blending acoustic sounds, electronics and live processing. Zananas inception dates from an all-night peace vigil concert in the fall of 2002 when Kristin invited Monique and poet Barbara Barg to join her for an evening of improvised music and spoken word. Since then Monique and Kristin have continued developing repertoire as a live processing duo, recording and performing in venues ranging from concert halls to clubs to abandoned buildings. Zanana uses improvisation as the foundation of their compositional process. While some works are free improvisations, some are structured improvisations and some are composed works with aleatoric elements, all are rooted in the expansive practices of Deep Listening. Zanana takes its name from a variant spelling of "zenana," the portion! of a house in southwestern Asian countries exclusively dedicated to women. Holding Patterns is a compilation of live recordings selected from Zanana's first season of performances. Gasholder Duet is an improvised duo of unprocessed acoustic sounds recorded live inside the historic Gasholder Building in Troy, NY. Doorjam and Ghost Dog combine live processing of both the voice and trombone sampled in real-time with prerecorded soundfiles of ambient recordings made at the Gasholder Building and prerecorded and electronically processed voice soundfiles. Flags, Title X, and What a Pretty Dog were recorded live in concert in New York City. Poet Barbara Barg provides the text for Flags and joins the duo on spoken word on What a Pretty Dog in honor of Moniques dog Suki, who was accustomed to hearing this phrase regularly from strangers throughout her life.
Kristin Norderval is a classically trained singer, improviser, and composer who performs an eclectic repertoire that spans the renaissance to the avant-garde. Many works have been written for her, and her collaborations have included work with choreographers, sculptors, filmmakers and installation artists. Since 1997, she has also been recording on-site improvisations in unusual spaces, many of them industrial. She has recorded new works for Koch International, Mode, Nonesuch, Point, Euridice and CRI. Monique Buzzarté is an avid proponent of contemporary music, commissioning and premiering many new works for trombone alone, with electronics, and in chamber ensembles in addition to composing for traditional and electro-acoustic ensembles. Her recordings include John Cage's Five3 with the Arditti Quartet on John CAGE: Vol. 19 - The Number Pieces 2 (Mode 25) and Dreaming Wide Awake with the New Circle Five (Deep Listening 20). An author, activist, and educator as well as a performer/composer, Ms. Buzzarté has published research on the brass music of women composers and led efforts that led to the admission of women into the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

This belated collection of Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company tracks features 14 performances, a dozen of which debut here. Of the two familiar selections, the version of "Ball and Chain" here is the same one that graces Cheap Thrills, and "Bye Bye Baby" can be heard on In Concert. No matter if it's not quite the definitive Big Brother album; it is nonetheless a hell of a lot of fun. Big Brother's playing is intense and relatively tight. A magnificent moment is heard in "I Need a Man to Love" when Joplin urges the band on. "C'mon boys, play," she prods, and a stunning Sam Andrews guitar solo ensues. If you've never heard Joplin do "Summertime," grab this album. If you have, grab it anyway. It's wonderful. --Myra Friedman

One of a kind.......2007-03-04
I was a young teen in 1968. Even back then, Janis Joplin was an acquired taste, so imagine my surprise when I learned that she could send my old-fashioned dad into paroxyms of ecstasy! I once actually saw him rise out of his chair and sway back and forth in front of the TV as a feathered and boa-ed Joplin poured her heart out for a live audience. He was mesmerized, thrilled, smiling like a child. It was a moment I'll never forget, cuz my father normally listened to Perry Como, Peggy Lee and Bert Kaempfert on the "Music Of Your Life" station.
That's the sort of magic effect Joplin's rare talent had on listeners. She always sang full throttle, gave her audiences everything within her, and we responded in kind. This LIVE AT WINTERLAND '68 album is a fine example of Janis in top form, performing with a band that paled by comparison to her brilliance. Big Brother & the Holding Co. do their best, though. The miking and mix are excellent throughout-- recordings sound very clear. Includes 24 pages of liner notes.
"One of a kind" is an overused phrase, yet it's a certainty that there will NEVER be another Janis Joplin. We were blessed to have her, if only for a moment.

Anyone who wants the best Big Brother & Janis Joplin recording, this is it!
Her greatest hits album is so commercialized and sanitized ,it's just insipid plastic product.Boni principii, malus finis. Her Woodstock performance did not arouse the invitation of Minerva.-Winterland '68 is still the best live concert CD ,i've heard yet.She is the greatest female singer of her generation,if not always.Viva voce, vivat regina!
Garage Band Blues.......2006-06-15
When I'm in the mood for Janis,I put on Cheap Thrills. Nothing wrong with Kozmic Blues or Pearl, but they are the "cleaned up, dressed for meetin'" Janis. There's something endearing, energizing, and wild about the intense sloppiness of Big Brother that's perfect for Janis' over the top caterwauling. Talk about the combination of the two! I'll be darned - it is better than Cheap Thrills! The band sears with buzzsaw acid-drenched guitars, practically coming off the track, with Janis hanging on for dear life. Time-warped garage band blues with a world class singer. Considering the technology at the time, the sound is great.
Better than Cheap Thrills....really.......2006-04-13
I was just about old enough (14) in 1968 to appreciate Big Brother when they released the Cheap Thrills LP. After many years I decided to replace it in CD. However reading the reviews here swayed me into buying this live recording instead. Good move. Ordinarily I don't care much for recordings of concert performances. This is different. This is great. BUY THIS CD. If not satisfied I will refund your money (just kidding).
No person even remotely interested in Joplin/acid rock/the60's or whatever will fail to find something of value here. Joplin purists may prefer some of her later work, maybe not. But if you are looking for "chemistry" this is where to find it. Big Brother might not have gone too far on their own, but they sure are great with her in front. And really, without this band at this time in this place who's to say what turns Janis Joplin's career would have taken?
Ten bucks for a piece of history. You can't go wrong.

Early Big Brother.......2003-02-03
Chronlogically this was recorded before their first album on Mainstream Records in 1967. Some of the tracks here also appeared on that first studio album. So how is it? The Monterey performance was a little more polished but this disc is a nice addition although the playing is a little more ragged. The track "Coo Coo" appeared on the "Cheap Thrills" album with new lyrics as "Oh Sweet Mary". If you have all of Janis's other discs I would pick this one up; you won't be disappointed and it is interesting to hear the band in their formative stage.
Pre-fame live album from 1960s legends.......2002-05-29
Recorded somewhere in San Francisco (the liner notes don't say where) in the Summer of 1966, these thirteen live tracks document the bond that Joplin had formed with Big Brother after only a couple of months practice. Big Brother drummer David Getz's liner notes (written in the mid-80s, perhaps for the original vinyl issue of this material) provide an evocative description of how the band's early communal living helped forge their unity as performers.
By the time they released their second album ("Cheap Thrills") two years later, the band would have more original material, but at this point in their career they were still relying heavily on R&B and blues standards. Covers include "I Know You Rider" (a favorite of the Grateful Dead), Shirley & Lee's "Let the Good Times Roll," Howlin' Wolf's "Moanin' At Midnight," and Jimmy McCraklin's "Blow My Mind." Joplin's take on Willie Mae ("Big Mama") Thornton's "Ball and Chain" was still developing into the full-blown showstopper she'd deliver a year later at the Monterey Pop Festival, and the single "Coo Coo" is presented in early form.
The band would later be recorded in their more famous form on "Live at Winterland '68." This earlier tape shows off the band's formation, including their transition to, essentially, a backing band for Joplin. Though she's front-and-center for the lion's share of the vocals, her presence is occasionally diluted by other band members' vocals.
The tape, from a source uncredited in the liner notes, is hissy, though very listenable. A bonus track, recorded at San Francisco's KQED in April 1967, provides a higher-fidelity 7-minute instrumental freakout on "Hall of the Mountain King." Most of this material was released in 1984 on a Rhino Records LP titled, "Big Brother & the Holding Company Live," and by other labels as "Cheaper Thrills." An import CD of the latter is available from the UK on Acadia, but it costs more and offers no extra material.
Those looking for an introduction to Joplin and Big Brother are probably better served by "Cheap Thrills." Those wishing to look more deeply into the band's history will find this a compelling document.

Product Description
It was forty years ago today, and the summer of 1967 in San Francisco was magic, indeed. Out of that historic scene came Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, with a rock sound from the outer planets surrounding a fiery core of ageless blues. Time has passed but the heat hasn't subsided as Peter Albin, Sam Andrew, and Dave Getz welcome guitarist Chad Quist and spectacular singer Sophia Ramos for a brand new blazing of all the Big Brother favorites and some stellar new songs.
Hold Me is taken from an inspired appearance before an adoring audience at the Burg Herzberg Festival in Germany. The recording quality is superb and the group's fervor was caught with six cameras! The original band members' joy at playing this concert is reinforced by knowing they found an amazing performer to handle the legendary Janis Joplin vocals. Sophia Ramos has grit, soul and charisma to spare as she charges through the Big Brother classics: Piece of My Heart, Ball and Chain, Women is Losers. Summertime has never been sung better.
Product Description
Live CD released by Joseph Arthur from his 2004 tour. The entire show is recorded as 1 continuous track and was manufactured by hand per order so the release is a CD with the date & location handwritten and a sticker affixed to a thin jewel case. This is the only way this release was offered. This is a legitimate release made available to fans. This is a full length recording.

Customer Reviews:
Blues with a twist.......2001-09-13
I only recently began listening to Janis Joplin. Naturally like most people I had only heard about her as having died from a drug overdose along with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. I can honestly say that listening to Janis Joplin sing "Summertime" was one of the defining moments of my life and when she belted out "Ball and Chain" I knew that I would be a fan forever. Janis has often been singled out as a white woman who sings the blues. That label fails to do her unique timbre and her own tortured version of music justice. Frankly, I think Joplin's bluesy and earthy style have revolutionized music in more ways than one and these CDs are great representatives of Janis's work especially as they offer some of her live songs which are once again of amazing intensity and strength.
