The Evil Genius Lends A Hand To LP's Emcee
DJ Green Lantern invades the mixtape game with Fort Minor on this
major motion mixtape. For those unfamiliar, Mike Shinoda (lead singer
for the platinum rock group Linkin Park) has branched out and created
his hip-hop identity, Fort Minor. With an album due out at the end of '05
(executive produced by Jay-Z), this is the official mixtape beforehand.

better than Rising Tide.......2007-02-04
I loved Rising Tide. but after playing it for a few days, I grew quite tired of it. and after listening to the Mixtape, I realized what I was missing. The Mixtape is absolutely worth listening, it is like no other remix out there. I mean, Jimi Hendrix remix? hell yes! My favorite is the Bloc Part ft. Apathy and Styles of Beyond. and including Lupe Fiasco just made this mixtape all the more enjoyable. GET THIS

Wow. Now let me repeat myself. Wow.

So after you've purchased the Mixtape CD, feel free to make copies of it, and give it to friends, but please encourage them to also buy a copy, so as to support M. Shinoda (aka Fort Minor), along with getting a copy or two of "The Rising Tied".

Dope.......2006-04-18
This is the best mixtape I've ever heard. I'm not really into the mixtape scene, primarily because most of them recycle the same beats too much for me, but this one is way different. Fort Minor got creative with this one.
The production on this mixtape is off the charts. It makes the cd. Shinoda kills this mixtape production wise, and he is quickly becoming one of my favorite producers in the game. This cd contains some innovative sampling from bands you wouldn't expect to hear on a hip hop mixtape including: Guns N Roses, Jimi Hendrix, Rush, and Bloc Party; and some of the beats on here will amaze you.
Shinoda is not the most gifted emcee, but he is capable of holding his own on the mic. Apathy and Lupe Fiasco spit some fire on this cd though. Styles of Beyond and Celph Titled have their moments on the mic as well. There is even surprise guest appearance by Juelez Santana on here, who spits a hot verse also.
The official cd Fort Minor put out-"The Rising Tied" used to get a lot of air time in my whip, but this mixtape has pretty much replaced it in my cd rotation. One of my boys told me "DUDE, You GOTTA burn this cd for me" after hearing three songs on it. Fort Minor: We Major is an underground gem.
Here is a quick summary of this review--You want to own this cd. The End.

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qing, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

Album Description
As DJ Green Lantern told us in his previous two installments, he is looking to take over the music industry and in Invasion Part 3 (Countdown to Armageddon), he enlists several hiphop heavyweights into his faction. There are several wicked freestyles on this compilation from the likes of Fat Joe, Eminem and Lloyd Banks, to name just a few, and other members outside the Shady/Aftermath camp make their presence felt. Lil' Flip and Cassidy chop it up on "Straight Riderz" and Jae Mills teams with Kelly for a banger in "Who Run It." Dr. Dre even takes the time to cosign Shady's latest acquisition Stat Quo. If Armageddon is coming, then Lantern has formed a solid team of lyricists.

one of the greatest albums I own.......2007-03-26
This is a classic as far as I'm concerned. It's a great psychedelic work, but the guitars are peircingly loud like nothing else I've heard, not like metal-sounding guitars, though. Less distortion, or whatever. It is constant electric howling. At first listen it took some getting used to. These guys remind me of the Doors. It's the vibe. "Transparent whales always make me feel like I've never been in the right dimension."
Great American Neo-Psychelidic Rock Music.......2004-01-14
It seems that the more creative a band seems to be, the worse they get along. By fusing this tension with a love of 60's garage rock, the Screaming Trees managed to produce some of the most consistantly exciting music of the many Seattle bands during (and years before) the grunge movement. Because the guitars are layered over each other, it's hard to believe they were a one-guitar outfit.
"Lantern" is a low-budget recording from their time on the legendary/notorious SST Records, home of hardcore punks Black Flag and the mighty Husker Du. Fans of the Nuggets-era rock bands of the Sixties, the Trees inject punk's power chords into the mix. Lyrics are a bit more psychedelic and less-meaningful than on later on in their career but still damn catchy. After a couple of listens, the highlights of this record will stick with you. Every song seems to have a distinct sound to it and each track can be complimented in different ways.
I would recommend anything from this band's catalog.
Until The End Of The Universe.......2001-03-11
Take a little stroll down forest backroads and, with a little luck, you will witness the Mushroom Celebration and the Breathing Frond Reverie. Night-drift through the desert and, if you possess a strong soul, you will hear Mescalito's howls and the Powerwalking Ancients. Glide on solar winds and, bereft of everything, you will sing the Novae Illuminatio Conundrum and dance in the Umbra Pegasii Tabernae. Or let yourself be transported by this little magic carpet of a record and you will experience the rush and the glee.
The Greatest Band Ever.......2000-11-15
One only has to hear the Screaming Trees finale two albums (Sweet Oblivion & Dust) to know that this is one of the finest groups ever to record. In early works like Invisible Lantern, the group has not yet established their groove, but there is certainly an audio seed for the incredible works to come. The riff that explodes out of feedback at the very beginning is a perfect opening to the unique and beautiful garage-psychedelia yet to come. "Grey Diamond Desert" is purely haunting, "Even If" is a clean song that features Lanegan's enchanting voice and demonstrates the Trees' gift for subtle riffing. The Conner brothers are very charged musicians as demonstrated throughout the album, and the drumming of Mark Pickerel leaves little to complain about. Although not as astounding as their more mature works, Invisible Lantern is a great album, that documents the early days of one of America's greatest underrated rock and roll bands.

I wish Release Therapy could have been this good.......2007-06-30
Don't get me wrong, Release Therapy was a great cd, but this mix tape was better. To me, it Luda really out did himself lyrically on this effort and that's not small feat for him because he does tight work on all his cds lyrically, but everything from the beats (even if some are pulled from other artist) to the mixing and production came together on this one to me.

remarkable evocation of a bygone style.......2003-07-25
In some ways, Artis Wodehouse's Disklavier realization of Zez Confrey's lighter-than-air pianistic joyrides is an even more impressive accomplishment than her previous restorations of Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton piano rolls. Confrey's novelty style seems the truest musical embodiment of F. Scott Fitzgerald. It is fascinating to hear the spirit of the 20s come to life in such a nerve titillating way. Especially remarkable are the selections hand played by Ms. Wodehouse into the Disklavier. Though they are designated on the jacket liner notes, by ear it is impossible to tell the difference-- a tribute to the complete success and seamless integrity of her stylistic resurrection.
Wodehouse the magnificent.......2003-04-25
I've heard Artis Wodehouse play in other venues and she is an artist of the most amazing versatility and profound knowledge, not to mention astounding energy. This CD is exciting to listen to, friends play in their workplaces to add zip to life there. It will bring you tremendous enjoyment.
The Rolls Royce of Zez Confrey recordings........2003-04-10
If you already know and enjoy Zez Confrey's music, this disc belongs in your collection. If Confrey is unknown to you, this disc still belongs in your collection, unless of course you find joyful, exuberant piano music to be repugnant.
For those new to Confrey, here's a brief description:
Edward Elzear Confrey (known to all as Zez) was a self-described composer of novelty piano music, his way of trying to describe music that was at once influenced by ragtime, early jazz, popular songs, and classical composers, particularly Debussy and MacDowell. His music rarely if ever aspires to emotional profundity, but its sheer joy, bounce, and tunefulness make it hard to put down once you've started, whether as listener or pianist. As an amateur pianist, I've been playing Zez Confrey's music for 20 years. The reactions I have gotten from people over the years have been consistently the same; "Wow! Who wrote that?", and "Are there recordings of this music I can buy?". Now, this disc gives me an easy answer to the second question.
This disc is Artis Wodehouse's fourth disc devoted to her amazing humanized piano rolls. The first two covered a good cross-section of George Gershwin's piano rolls, while a third was a collection of piano rolls by Jelly Roll Morton. This is easily her finest work since the first "Gershwin plays Gershwin" disc in 1993.
Zez Confrey, like his contemporaries George Gershwin and Jelly Roll Morton, left behind a well-rounded collection of acoustic gramophone recordings as well as paper piano rolls. The least sophisticated of these paper rolls merely captured the notes that the pianist played and nothing more. Once the roll was published and sold, it was the job of the consumer, operating his or her own reproducing piano, to mechanically add pedaling, rubato, and dynamics as he or she saw fit. However, the most sophisticated reproducing rolls captured not only the notes but the pedaling, rubato, and dynamics used by the pianist, often with uncanny accuracy. All paper rolls allowed the pianist the option of post-production editing, e.g., removing wrong notes, and in popular music such as this, adding dazzling "third hand" counterpoint effects that made the end result unplayable by a human pianist. Confrey was one the best at this, and he uses this technique liberally throughout the rolls on this disc. (For those of you familiar with Confrey's "Kitten on the Keys" or "Dizzy Fingers" in their standard published versions, you're in for a treat once you hear Confrey's souped up three-handed versions presented here.) Still, even the best of these paper rolls played back on the best reproducing pianos could never be mistaken by an astute listener for a human being (two-handed or otherwise). There was always a discernible gap between playing produced in the human realm and that of the mechanical realm, that is until relatively recently. The explosion of digital technology has allowed such things as computerized reproducing pianos like the Yamaha Disklavier to become a readily available reality. Recordings made and played back on such pianos are virtually indistinguishable from live human performances. It wasn't long before people like Artis Wodehouse starting exploring ways to apply this technology to the old paper rolls, finally enabling listeners to experience what it might have been like to hear pianists like Gershwin, Morton, and Confrey recorded in the flesh, and in modern sound. By taking the information encoded on these old paper rolls and feeding it into a Yamaha Disklavier system, she has been able narrow the gap between human playing and mechanical playing to the point of near nonexistence. Through careful study of Confrey's actual playing from acoustic recordings, Wodehouse has softened the mechanical edges, painstakingly adding those qualities that distinguished Confrey's playing in the flesh, effectively making each roll indistinguishable from an actual human performance.
On the first Gershwin disc from 1993, several of the rolls she chose had been previously recorded in their original paper roll form. Having heard these original paper roll recordings, listening to Artis Wodehouse's humanized versions of these same rolls was like seeing an old film before and then after restoration. In short, it was a revelation.
This new Zez Confrey disc easily lives up to these high standards Wodehouse set for herself, indeed this disc may even set the bar higher. This time around, not only is Wodehouse working from two different types of paper rolls, she is actually playing some of the pieces herself, works that Confrey did not record, but that deserve a place on any disc of Confrey's music. The joyful bounce and rhythmic snap of her playing so perfectly matches Confrey's own playing that it becomes impossible to tell which tracks are hers and which are Confrey's. The result is an amazingly seamless and unified blend of musicianship, scholarship, technological know-how, with an astute understanding of the individual elements that made Confrey's playing unique. Whether as pianist or digital editor, with this CD, Wodehouse has done more for Confrey's music than has anyone before her. The results are well worth hearing.

the winter skeleton trees.......2007-02-02
in order to search for music, i always have to wear a pair of headphones. im not quite sure what it is about the exact feeling towards variables of soundwaves traveling through tiny speakers to my ears, through my head and if its lucky, to my heart but when it works, its almost like partaking on a brand new beginning, a realization that music will always need to have this important aspect and still wont ever lose its spark.
hailing from australia, clogs are a quartet compromised from a neo classical background that share parts of acoustic-electronica and turn it into something divine. beginning from smooth levels of guitar, viola, bassoon, and percussion, they take smaller toys of instruments and integrate them into their sound as if the missing pieces found are apart of a patterned puzzle that has been waiting there all along. these certain different dimensions collide as curious repetition and experimentation takes the listener on their own private journey, full with calming daydreams of rich soundscapes detailing golden fields, turquoise blue oceans and magical, oriental foreign lands, the clogs are sure to make you feel safe anywhere even when yr far from home.
Wonderful.......2006-07-23
Lantern is largely a minimalist piece, but one that is concerned with producing music that is emotional, rather than with experimentation. And it works; the music is very beautiful throughout. The average track length, at around 4 minutes, is signficantly shorter than many similar pieces which makes it accessible even to those who normally find minimalist music overly repetitive.
My favourite tracks include "Kapsburger", which sounds like it could have been taken straight from Philip Glass' "Glassworks", and "Lantern" which is the only pieces featuring vocals, which it integrates nicely with the music to produce a relaxing meditative effect. I think that tracks #7-#10 let the album down somewhat, but it's still one of my favourite CDs that have been released this year.
BEAUTIFUL. SMARTLY SO........2006-03-01
This music belongs to a highly developed category: Tagging Clogs as "adventurous listening" is kinda sweet, kinda sad, but too simple. If we must define it, let's at least say "compelling" and make an effort to support the music and musicians that ask us to think as well as to feel.
But for the sake of context, and despite the fact that the pieces here are shorter, their expressive nature more direct and in many ways more approachable, I'd put "Lantern" next to something along the lines of parts of the Kronos catalog, aspects of Lindsay Cooper's work or even Gavin Bryars' "Vita Nova". Perhaps even moments by Rachel's. If you are familiar with any of these or like artists, Clogs will fit right in without sounding like some pale imitation. While similarities of form exist, Clogs remains original.
"Lantern" is at turns less abstract and more accessible than the Clogs' prior releases. The music is alternately airy, dense and, especially when compared to the earlier work, much more melodic. Possessed of a wonderfully refined sense of proportion, there's nothing excessive, nothing stray. Even the more assertive passages refrain from indulging in overly ornate flourishes. Like all their work, the performances here exhibit tightly knit, precise, difficult, unsentimental and still profoundly affecting ensemble playing with an ear that at times extends beyond the instruments to pure and purposeful sound.
The instrumentation fits together with remarkable result: a (principal) combination of guitar, bassoon, violin, viola and percussion -- and an occasional, fragile voice -- forms Chamber Orchestra depth and range: not nearly as familiar, but equally convincing. If you are working to develop an ear for beauty (not prettiness) harmonic complexity (not just major scales) rhythmic subtlety (not the tyranny of four) "Lantern" is here to light your way.

This CD will grow on you .......2007-02-13
I have been a Mansun fan since I heard "Wide Open Space" back in '97. It's probably been my favorite song ever since then, but I never did try and track down one of their CDs. I bought this one about 4 months ago, and have listened to it virtually every time I'm in my car. As the other reviews state, it is quite a strange sound, but Paul Draper will definitely hook you in with his voice & lyrics and it will continue to grow on you. Definitely a 10. Keep in mind I guess I'm not a real Mansun fan. I picked up their other 2 CDs after I thought I'd move on to their other releases. "Six" was one of the worst CDs I think I have ever listened to, and "Little Kix" is quite dull throughout - definitely not on par w/the "Grey Lantern". You will not regret picking this one up.
The Most Innovative British band of the 1990's.......2005-06-04
Sadly, Mansun are no longer with us, having broken up at the end of 2003, but this, their first album (the UK version) is fantastic. This is rock album as sweeping cinematic epic, every song seguing into the next and containg a central thread filled with colorful (sordid, in frontman Paul Draper's words) characters such as Dark Mavis, the Stripper Vicar, The Chad, and Egg Shaped Fred. Absolutely gorgeous in its musicianship, singing, and production, this is a great album if you're into great British bands like Blur, Suede, Pulp, and Radiohead, and want to dig a little deeper into that sound and style. In fact this album is the one that knocked Blur's fantastic 1997 self titled album off the #1 spot in the charts. All the songs on here are excellent, but check out the opening trilogy of tracks, Stripper Vicar, Egg Shaped Fred, Wide Open Space, and the majestic and haunting finale, Dark Mavis. Phenomenal. One last note...DO NOT BUY THE US VERSION OF THIS ALBUM. It is chopped up, rearranged, has songs missing, and completely ruins the album as it was intended. You'll spend a bit more for the UK version, but it's worth it. Besides, the added tracks on the US version are available on the excellent Kleptomania box set.
And another cool band from the UK.......2005-01-26
Mansun is one of the many UK bands that just never made it here. It is a shame too, since I think they're cool, quirky, and fun. Their music is full of bizarre lyrics, sweeping strings, rocking guitars, and synthesizers. It is Britpop with a dark side.
I like to listen to bands who are basically unknown in the US, and I almost always realize that I've found another great act. Mansun is no exception here. I can't really think of another band to accurately compare them to, they are just Mansun. I say give this CD a listen though. Either you'll really like it or you will think it is quite weird. It may even grow on you, but if not at least you'll have given it a chance.
As good as Six.......2004-02-10
I don't quite get all these people saying it's not as good as Six.
Anyhow, what we have here is a something that would never happen with an American band. But let's not talk about that. Let's talk about Paul Draper's evil, evil voice. You hear metal artists try to make their voices sound devil-esque. Paul Draper sounds like Satan's lawyer... or maybe his crooked accountant, or his agent or bookie. Satan may seem to run the show, but Paul Draper is who owns 85% of the souls in hell, and he uses them to make some great tunes. I can make my case point just by playing "Naked Twister". That effortless, creepy vibrato laced falsetto that seeps into your body like a cloudy gas of sorts. He does that sort of thing throughout this solemly beautiful album. The songwriting and structure here might not be as random and fascinating as on Six, but they find other ways to keep your attention. Each one is an imaginative, dark, eclectic composition that I'm sure you'll either admire, think evil thoughts about, or find some marginal reason to dismiss them as a sum of their influences (rock critics/uptight musicians who use words like "dark", "eclectic", "solemn", and "composition"; but can nary create or display any of them). Don't miss the point. Just get this album (less than $2 used right now, actually). My only complaint is that I really wish this one had "Stripper Vicar" instead of "Take it Easy, Chicken"... I haven't heard "Stripper Vicar", but the other one is my least favorite track on the album.
A good debut, though not as good as Six.......2003-04-27
Having read all this great stuff about 'Attack of the Grey Lanturn' and being a proud owner and lover of their second album 'Six', I had no hesitation in purchasing this record. However, it did disappoint me just slightly. On 'Six', there is a sense of wonder at the incredible, progressive musical experiments and charmingly mad nature of what's going on. On 'Attack of the Grey Lanturn', the songs don't seem to be as well-written at their core. Nevertheless, its a very interesting album, really unlike anything else.
It begins brightly with the pleasent, orchestral 'The Chad Who Loved Me' with its rumbling guitar and epic scope (still no match for the title track of 'Six', which opens it) and the rather mad dance-y camp groove of 'Mansun's Only Love Song'. It, and many songs on here, would be somewhat mislabelled under Indie Rock, being far more reliant on synthesisers etc than guitars, although their subsequent albums are more guitar-based.
'Taxloss' however is irritating and its stupid tune and overblown nature leaves you desperate to just put something else on by its 3rd minute, let alone the 7th. The acoustic, yearning 'You. Who Do You Hate?' is much better, and when it explodes into heavy rock it is extremely cool. 'Wide Open Space' follows and its an expertly constructed exercise in paranoia like Radiohead with a poppier melodic core, but doesn't quite match up to its equivalent off Six, 'Legacy'.
'Stripper Vicar' is quite Blur-ish in its very English pop melody and lyrical comic cheekiness. It also seems influenced by Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, however there's a rockier twist here on both bands. Its opposite number on Six would probably be 'Being A Girl', and again its not quite as good, but nevertheless a cool single. 'Disgusting' begins with a gothic, chilling soundscape and moves into an echoing synth-driven number which still has a quite dark feel. 'She Makes My Nose Bleed' despite its awful title is very well constructed with its keyboard-and-guitar combination and another dark feel.
'Naked Twister' has a really epic, memorable chorus and is an album highlight. However its followed by the awful 'Egg-Shaped Fred' which sounds like a parody of Britpop performed by a metal band. 'Dark Mavis', too, is a beautiful closer, building and yearning, with good lyrics, and ends with the same orchestral theme that 'The Chad Who Loved Me' has, adding to the feel of concept and unity for the album.
You need to be in the right mood for Mansun: if you're in a bad mood, they'll irritate you more and just sound overblown and annoying. When you're in the right mood, this is great to listen to, and this is clearly an accomplished album, but it really doesn't come close to Six, which is a 5 star album by all accounts. This album started out disappointing me heavily, but its grown from a 2-star rating to 3 1/2-stars with repeated listens. Just make sure you skip 'Taxloss' and 'Egg-Shaped Fred'.
