Editorial Reviews

This is another CD which should be added to the shopping list.

Daniel Lippel realized the demanding score with precision and expressivity
Album Description
Daniel Lippel's debut CD includes a broad range of repertoire, from the ebullient 4th Lute Suite by Bach to Toru Takemitsu's meditative All in Twilight. The recording was made in the lush acoustic of Cleveland's St. Stanislaus church, and the sound and energy that are captured are both products of this inspiring space. Classical New Jersey hailed, "Guitarist Daniel Lippel has self-released a CD which shows off the wide range of his abilities. His plush sound and fluent technique lie at the heart of his playing as a constant, but he finds a different voice when he needs it. His Bach and Takemitsu are not at all the same even though they share his general approach to music making. It would be most difficult to pin down a favorite work on this CD; they are all so different, each one from a different period. The Bach has a limpid clarity of line which one must have to make Bach work. Yet there is nothing rigid sounding in Lippels phrasing. Elegy is well sustained by Lippel, capturing the intimacy of the sadness in a single guitar, yet expanding grief beyond that single focus in the resonance of the instrument. "

Album Description
Resonance is an exploration of the acoustical and emotional resonance of the sound of the guitar within the context of new music. The album is a collection of contemporary solo guitar music and electro-acoustic pieces (works for guitar and pre-recorded electronic sounds). The CD includes four premiere recordings by composers Nils Vigeland, Soonjung Suh, Judah Adashi, and Peter Gilbert, and versions of two seminal works from the contemporary repertoire by Mario Davidovsky and Elliott Carter. Guitarist Daniel Lippel has received critical acclaim for performances of both contemporary and standard repertoire.

Warm and Musical.......2005-03-06
Daniel Lippel's second release on the Focus label is a wonderful album that, although somewhat skewed towards Modernist aesthetics, provides an excellent overview of the wealth of classical guitar music presently being written in the United States. The playing is uniformly excellent and Mr. Lippel is able to bring a shining musicality and much welcome warmth to composers such as Davidovsky and Carter whose performances have all too often favored a strident astringency of interpretation. Also impressive is the great tonal variety Mr. Lippel is able to coax from his instrument.
What distinguishes this album however is the care and forethought that went into its compilation. The album is framed by pieces that pair the guitar with electronics and generally moves from older to newer music. The result feels like a coherent musical journey instead of the bric-a-brac feeling of so many other instrumental collections. For me, the two standout moments on the disc are Nils Vigeland's Sonata (the second movement of La Folia Variants) and Soonjung Suh's Garak. The latter seems tailor-made to Mr. Lippel's aforementioned timbral virtuosity, while the former possessed some absolutely ravishing harmonies. In conclusion, Resonance is a top-notch effort that should appeal to both contemporary music fans and more general admirers of the classical guitar repetiore.

A beautiful interpretation of Bach, as well as more modern composers. The contrast of the Baroque versus Modern compositions makes this album unique and refreshing. I highly recommend "Daniel Lippel".

Product Description
This all-Bach release from guitarist Daniel Lippel includes recordings of three of Bach's most powerful works for solo instruments- the tragic A minor violin sonata, the joyful A major (originally E flat) cello suite, and the transcendent Prelude, Fugue, and Allegro. Lippel lives in New York City, where he is active as a chamber musician, recitalist, and recording artist. More information can be found at www.danlippel.com

Excellent.......2006-01-05
Daniel Lippel's expert account of three solo works by J.S. Bach is a welcome addition to my short stack of favorite CD's. The disc's first two works were originally composed for solo violin and cello, respectively. Mr. Lippel's tasteful transcriptions for the guitar bring out the harmonic and rhythmic essence of each work, and are particularly effective in the Cello Suite at enhancing the dance-like character of the movements. His tone is generally light and lute-like, but does not shy away from expressive variety.
The triumph of this disk is Mr. Lippel's ability to express both the intimacy and the grandeur of this music. The Sonata's Andante and the Suite's Sarabande are not soothingly placid, but singingly personal. The first half ot the Andante looks tenderly into the eyes of a beloved, while the second half confronts hard questions with equal tender honesty. The quiet introspection of the Sarabande becomes poignant nostalgia when Lippel repeats the final phrase.
Perhaps most surprising is the Fugue of BWV 998. The work begins with an unassumingly beautiful subject, which in Lippel's hands takes on an expansive beneficence as it moves through its contrapuntal paces. The fugue's extended middle section moves with a light grace and Mr. Lippel guides the listener through with an assured sense of the structure and the significance of each harmonic turn. The return of the opening's fugal texture leads to a conclusion that reveals a magnificence and grandeur rarely heard in this repertoire and yet infinitely satisfying, with an inevitability that recognizes the journey we've had from the beginning of the movement. Never satisfied with the interpretive status quo, Mr. Lippel gives us the full fruits of his ongoing relationship with Bach -- the widest possible scope of experience, channeled through a single guitar.
Dan Lippel, J.S.Bach BWV 998, 1003, 1010.......2005-12-15
I found this to be a truly exquisite album. Mr.Lippel's playing is technically impressive, and moving in it's emotional intensity. The physical sound of his guitar and the quality of the recording are as good as any classical guitar CD that I have heard. This is a valued addition to my classical guitar library, and I'm already looking forward to Mr.Lippel's future recordings.
