The madrigals in this book, aptly titled by Monteverdi "Madrigals of War and Love," range from solo voice or duo with continuo to works for eight singers and strings. Concerto Italiano gives a magnificent performance: the opening of "Hor che'l ciel" is daringly slow and still, only to give way suddenly to the narrator's cries of torment; "Ardo, avvampo" proceeds from the thrilling chaos of fire alarms to an extraordinary hush as two tenors end the piece in unison. In the famous "Lamento della ninfa," the musicians have found a way to follow Monteverdi's instructions that the three men should sing in strict tempo ("following the hand"), while the solo soprano nymph sings her lament in freer time, "following the heart." The result is astonishing. --Matthew Westphal

Amazon.com essential recording
Monteverdi's Fifth Book of Madrigals begins like the Fourth Book--the first half of the publication contains five-voice a cappella madrigals (with optional continuo) that use surprising dissonances to express the images and sentiments of their texts with extraordinary intensity. The second half, however, breaks new ground: the continuo (i.e., accompanying chord instrument like harpsichord or lute) part becomes independent (and indispensable), thus enabling Monteverdi to set extended passages for one or two voices. One fine example is "T'amo, mia vita" ("I love you, my life")--a rapturous meditation by a young lover who has heard his beloved utter those words. Monteverdi sets the four words for solo soprano, repeating them between lines of the young man's reverie as if replayed over and over in his mind. Concerto Italiano's performance is, quite simply, extraordinary. --Matthew Westphal

Exquisite...amazing...sublime!.......2001-02-08
If I could give this 10 stars I would. This performance of Monteverdi's 5th book is by far the most intense listening that i have experienced from a recording in a long, long time. Concerto Italiano takes these pieces where they have seldom been before...into the high heavens of outer space and the most intimate and hair-raising depths of your inner space. The recording quality is so clean that you can almost hear, in the prepatory breaths, what the singers had for breakfast. But seriously, the extreme dramatic qualities of Allesandrini's interpretations to the exquisite intonation to the amazing skill and sensitivity of each one of the musicians in Concerto Italiano-- this recording will leave you in tears and wholeheartedly agreeing that Monteverdi was the best composer to ever live.

"The Delights of Music".......2003-03-19
I don't pretend to be an expert on the Monteverdian madrigal. But I know good singing when I hear it, and there's plenty of that on this disc. Marco Longhini conducts a group of Italian singers and instrumentalists collectively called 'Deliciae Musicae' and they couldn't have a more apt name--their delight (and ours) in their performance of this music is evident from start to finish.
Monteverdi's First Book of Madrigals, primarily for five voices a cappella or lightly accompanied, was published when he was only nineteen in 1587. The texts are secular and mostly of the 'to die upon a kiss' genre. There are some humorous examples in addition to the earnest swooning and pining sort. And towards the end of the Book there is a triptych, the second and third of which are parodies of the first - rather clever, too. All of these madrigals are set to meltingly beautiful polyphonic music of the late Renaissance/early Baroque. It was later that Monteverdi took music in an entirely new direction.
Which brings us to the remainder of the disc: a collection of Monteverdi's madrigals that were not published in his lifetime, some of them much later than Book I. One of them, once thought apocryphal but later acknowledged to be by Monteverdi, is the extended 'Lamento di Olimpia', similar to the much better-known 'Lamento d'Arianna,' and comes from Ariosto's 'Orlando Furioso.' It tells of the betrayal and abandonment of a Dutch noblewoman by her lover. One can hear in this masterpiece the same kind of drama one finds in Monteverdi's better known operas.
The musicianship, production, notes are all exemplary. A hearty recommendation, particularly at this budget price.

Must have it!.......2002-04-06
The European Renaissance madrigals remain an invaluable good of humanity. And this recording is another proof that the real music goes hand in hand with good performers. The madrigal, a fashionable genre of secular vocal music in the sixteenth century, has lost its consideration today. However, more and more vocal ensembles around the world have contributed to the revival of this music.
The notes of this compact disc suggest that the term madrigal may derive from the Latin matricalis, meaning "from the mother," and refers to a song in the mother tongue. However, the term might also be used in order to designate secular pieces (cantus materialis) as oppose to sacred pieces (Cantus spiritualis). In any case, the madrigal indicates a lyrical and musical form in 14th-16th century Italy. The musical madrigal used to depict the nature, but its prevalence grew and thus the genre enjoyed a huge development in the cultural life of the princely courts and academies of the Italian city-states. Here, the madrigal displayed a great stylistic variety along with several regional variations.
The present recording unfolds a page of the madrigal history. The first group of pieces comes from Italy itself. Eternal "hits" such as Arcadelt's Il bianco cigno, Palestrina's I vaghi fiori, Monteverdi's Ecco mormorar l'onde and Lasciate mi morire, as well as the very chromatic Moro lasso and Dolcissima mia vita by Gesualdo stand under the very earthy concepts of nature, love, and death suggested in the title song of this compilation, Luca Marenzio's La bella Ninfa (The Beautiful Nymph).
After a short stop in Spain, the "trip" goes to Germany and France. While Hassler and Lechner dominate the German region of the madrigal, Passereau's Il est bel et bon and Lasso's Bon jour, mon coeur are the well-known examples of the French direction of the secular genre, the chanson.
The last section of the recording is dedicated to some of the most wonderful English madrigals, such as Morley's Now Is the Month of Maying, Farmer's Fair Phyllis, Gibbons's Silver Swan, or Bennet's Weep, O Mine Eyes. Considered by musicologists the "father" of the English madrigal, Thomas Morley inspired some other composers, among them John Bennet and John Farmer, while Gibbons and Wilbye developed a style of their own.
The listener can't find any information about the vocal ensemble that performs on this compact disc, the Hallenser Madrigalisten, but references about them can be easily extracted from their web site, .... The choir, whose English name would be The Halle Madrigal Singers, was founded in 1963 in Halle, Germany by Siegfried Bimberg as a chamber choir at the Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg. The 20 singers, musicologists, lecturers, students, and teachers of singing, have devoted themselves above all to the interpretation of 16th and 17th century choral music. Another omission from the CD notes is the text of the 27 madrigals including their translations. In my opinion, this may cause a limitation with regard to the general public who might choose not to buy this product whether or not they like Renaissance music.
What does not miss from this CD is the crisp performance of the group. This is an excellent recorded performance, not only because it was made in a church (Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche), but also for an overall good intonation, and for a stylistically correct phrasing and rhythm. A very good vocal balance, impressive diction and pronunciation, a vigorous character alternating with more lyrical pieces make this recording worth trying. However, there are some inexplicable fast tempi in Lasso's Matona mia cara or in Passereau's Il est bel et bon. It's not specifically the fast pulse they took in these pieces that might bother the elevated listener, but the lack of the feeling that after a structural section there's no clear delimitation, such a longer rest. Also, some of the slower to medium speed pieces might be found in a better "shape" elsewhere.
In conclusion, with all the pluses and minuses, the Halle Singers's collection of Renaissance madrigals remains a "must have" in any musician's personal library. I highly recommend this recording to anyone who loves Renaissance vocal music.

Stellar!!.......2006-10-20
Monteverdi really brings forth a new style of counterpoint in this fourth book. He incorporates some baroque elements to the polyphonic and homophonic textures in the late renaissance. His harmonies are more than fulfilling for the extremely passionate texts he chooses to match. What a gnarly album.
Highest recommendation.......2006-01-27
A stunning recording of these pieces, which range from the openly beautiful to passages of sadness, vexation, and grief. The Naxos booklet provides an interesting essay by the ensemble's conductor, Marco Longhini, with techincal and aesthetic appreciation of each madrigal, and some history relating to the scene in which Monteverdi composed - a sample can be read by visiting the Naxos website.

The recorded sound quality is phenomenal. The all-male ensemble is flawless, with the countertenors being particularly powerful. The recording was made at the Chiesa di San Pietro in Vincoli, Verona, and the acoustic is wonderfully full and resonant while retaining exemplary clarity.

Monteverdi (1567-1643) was regarded as an innovator by some, a violator of tradition by others. His Fifth Book of Madrigals, published in 1605, bears the subtitle "La seconda prattica," (in the composer's words: "Second Practice, or the Perfection of Modern Music"). It was very successful, but one reactionary critic described it as "the imperfection of modern music." Indeed this volume introduced a change into the texture, form, and expressive content of the madrigal, making the "rhetoric (the words) the mistress of harmony, not its handmaiden." To do this, Monteverdi used all available musical means, enlarging the customary complement of five voices, dividing them into solos, duets and trios, and adding instruments functioning both supportively and autonomously. The 19 madrigals recorded here are all on the theme of unrequited love. They include one cycle of three and one of five songs; each constitutes a veritable operatic scene, with the rejected lovers engaging in passionate pleading and anguished lamentation. The music is meltingly, heart-breakingly beautiful. Ranging from dark and somber, intense and ardent to lively, agitated and buoyant, its emotional impact is direct and immediate; even the complex counterpoint serves an expressive purpose. The instruments underline and comment on mood and character and provide improvisatory connections between songs and sections. True to its name, Delitiae Musicae, an all-male vocal ensemble with period instruments, gives a delightful, multi-faceted performance. The sound has both clarity and substance; the voices, virtually unvibrated, are pure, flexible, full of color and variety; every musical line and emotional nuance comes out. --Edith Eisler

The 'step' toward a new style.......2003-03-18
This is a very fine presentation of some of the greatest madrigals ever written. Part of a whole series of recordings of the famous Books of Madrigals by Monteverdi, this double CD presents earlier recordings made by a group of distinguished singers led by Emma Kirkby together with Anthony Rooley's Consort of Musicke. One of the seminal groups of the Early Music movement, the Consort is known for its contributions to the performance of Renaissance music through the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
I found this collection useful for the historical connotations of the program. One of the most important aspects is the birth of the new style in the first years of the seventeenth century. With the last six pieces of the Fifth Book, Monteverdi specifically demands the use of continuo instruments and through this he clearly marks the transition to the Baroque era. The seconda pratica (second practice) characterizes most of these two books of madrigals. The opening of the madrigal "Sfogava con le stelle" (Communing with the stars) represents an ensemble declamation on one chord in the rhythm of the text. In the new style, the words should govern the music, the sonorities must be in accordance with the textual images and ideas. The theatrical style is reinforced in the pieces of the Fifth Book by the particular dissonance treatment, such as unprepared sevenths and ninths. They were characterized at the time as improper.
The importance of the text is also evident through the thinner textures that Monteverdi uses at different moments in a piece. The composer writes passages where only alternating pair voices sing or if there are three voices at a time, one of them has a functional role while the other two move in parallel thirds, as in "Io mi son giovinetta" (I am young). Polyphony is not abandoned (a few madrigals have reminiscences of the prima pratica), but enhanced to smaller groups of voices competing or completing with each other.
The present recording sets apart through the clarity of the voices and the delicate ornamentation of certain passages, including a perceptible vibrato often used to enrich the sonority of such a small group. An impeccable vocal technique, which doesn't show off but serves the communication of emotions, an elegant treatments of the dynamics, including expressive accents, and an impeccable Italian diction are defining elements of this performance. Balance is sometimes a very difficult task in the context of Monteverdi's madrigals, but these singers are well coordinated and prove a highly trained sense of awareness.
To give this recording an even more interesting angle, the collection is rounded off by other four substantial accompanied madrigals. "Con che soavità" and "Tempro la cetra" come from the 7th Book, while "Mentre vaga Angioletta" and "Ogni amante è guerrier" are taken from the 8th Book. These pieces give the listeners an idea about the direction of Monteverdi's music.
Hear the Renaissance dissipate before your ears..........2001-03-26
... dissipate and morph into something quite extraordinary: the early Baroque in the hands of its first great master, Monteverdi!
Never has a composer been so generous in gradually but persistently 'easing' his audience into a new art, a new music. True the fourth book of madrigals has Sfogava con le stelle (marvelously rendered with the rest of the book here by the Consort of Musicke), but the fifth - therein lies the rub. It all begins with the familiar (but dissonant and daring!) sonorities of the Second Practice, but by the end these teeming harmonies have been reduced to chordal instrumental accompaniments to the most gorgeous monody and, yes, Baroque choral singing... you can quite literally hear the Renassiance tradition slowly dissolve into the Baroque, one of the most engaging 'moments musical'. It takes a mind of rare genius to father a new age of music... Monteverdi did just that and in THESE very madrigals.
As a bonus, Rooley et al. have included excerpts from the 7th and 8th books of madrigals just to show us where all these experiments led... Get to know these pieces. It's worth the efforts!
