What does a wildly successful purveyor of `80s big hair power ballads do in an ensuing decade dominated by fervent shoe-gazing and other attendant alt.cliches? If you're Jon Bon Jovi, you scale back your band's ambitions, retool yourself as surprisingly accomplished indie film and TV actor, and (mostly) wait for the pop music tides to turn in your favor again. But JBJ and guitarist/collaborator Richie Sambora didn't let their band's lukewarm `90s fortunes dampen their knack for hook-savvy songcraft, as this muscular anthem-fest argues at virtually every turn. BJ's songs here may be as infectious as ever, yet they're seldom mere confections, often infused with alternating doses of bracing cynicism (the title track's sarcastic riposte to the '04 election) and reflective, often bittersweet takes on histories both personal and otherwise. If it sometimes stoops to formula--the droning, metallic ethos of the obligatory big ballad "I Am" can't overcome some equally perfunctory lyrics-it's also an album with its share of warm surprises, be they unexpected nods to Dylan ("Last Man Standing," the acoustic idealism of "Bells of Freedom"), the hard-edged "I Want to Live" or a winning duet with Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles, "Who Says You Can't Go Home." Bon Jovi may deliver a sonically burnished triumph here by largely going back to the future--yet does it with one ear crucially cocked towards the anxious energy of the recent past. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!!!!.......2007-06-22

Their best stuff ever!!!! Great sound, awesome lyrics! Welcome to Wherever You Are - their best written song ever. I Am, I Want to be Loved, Have a Nice Day, Story of My Life, Bells of Freedom are excellent too! Giddy up!

"Now There's the Band - They really Play" Great album and Superb Concert. You guys ROCK!

2 out of 5 stars Morph from Ork.......2007-06-17

Hints of a country band realized.....That said Bon Jovi brings you.....Lost Highway. There have always been overtures towards country music from JBJ from Wanted: Dead or Alive, to The Blaze of Glory soundtrack. You knew, however, that they would be followed up with a Bad Medicine or 99 In The Shade. It is becoming apparent, as they age, that they will rock less and croon more..... Sad but true. JBJ's Slippery When Wet voice abandoned him years ago. He's learned to pick his spots, like an aging fastball pitcher. But....he is from Jersey so...I like him....I'll just listen to SWW and NJ more! Keppin the Faith!

5 out of 5 stars Good CD.......2007-06-10

First I must say that the last review is uncalled for. I guess you are just jealous about the Penguins AND Bon Jovi.

This cd is defiantly worth every penny! It's a must have for every Bon Jovi fan!

1 out of 5 stars SUCKY BAND.......2007-06-09

I hate fricking Bon Jovi more then Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby combined. I would like to take a crane and give them a wedgie so huge in their tight leather purple pants that it rips their anuses in two.

Strummmmm! That dramatic guitar chord that kicks of A Hard Day's Night (album, song, movie) still jumps right out at you, slaps you in the face, and jump-starts your heart. And you know what? Both the music and the film are still as crisp and lively as they were in 1964. Of course, only the first seven songs are actually in the movie (and they are the strongest of the bunch, from the rousing rock & roll of the title track and the hit single "Can't Buy Me Love," to the beautiful ballads "If I Fell" and "And I Love Her"). But nobody's going to complain about having songs like "I'll Cry Instead" and "Things We Said Today" in the second half of the record; they sure don't feel like leftovers. Yet another high-point for John, Paul, George, and Ringo--four fab fellows who hit the highest heights imaginable. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars A pop masterpiece.......2007-06-09

Though my favorite Beatle era has long been their middle period (RS through MMT), with their later period (1968 to the end) coming in second place, I've been getting reacquainted with this wonderful earlier album in a major way lately. Their early period might not be as polished, sophisticated, deep, or mature as their middle or later periods, but the songs on this album are all absolutely incredible. There's not a single filler song; all of them are loaded with energy, great hooks, wonderful instrumentation, and some suprisingly mature and introspective lyrics for being only their third album. The songs may all be about love, but each one is special and unique, dealing with different types and aspects of love. These aren't the typical simplistic love pop songs of 1964. It's also a landmark album in that it was their first to consist entirely of original material.

It's amazing to rediscover just how great the early Beatles were, how much kick their music had to it, making up with pure pop/rock energy what it lacked for in terms of maturity and sophistication. It's also probably true that this album is the most accurate picture of what Beatlemania was like, while the phenomenon was still new and exciting, before they had grown weary and cynical of touring and having to keep up a happy squeaky-clean public image. The guys singing these songs were still cute happy-go-lucky moptops. And though only the first 7 songs were included in the film, the other 6 are nothing to sneeze at. More bands should have such high-quality leftovers. (Although, surprisingly, this is one of the few albums where Ringo doesn't get any songs.)

The songs range from energetic pop, such as the opening title track (the opening chord still has an amazing effect so many decades later), "Can't Buy Me Love," and "Tell Me Why," to soft romantic ballads, such as "And I Love Her" (which contains some of Paul's finest lyrics, and I'm usually no longer a fan of the schmaltzy songs he often sang!) and "If I Fell" (which has some beautiful harmonising), to songs with a more complex (for a pop song) view on love and relationships, such as "You Can't Do That" (about a jealous and insecure lover) and "I'll Cry Instead" (an angry and depressed lover who got burned and wants revenge). The final track, "I'll Be Back," has also long been one of my favoritest Beatles' songs; it's so poignant and beautiful, the type of song that anyone who's had one's heart broken but still wants another chance to have a relationship with that person can relate to. And since John is my favorite Beatle, it certainly doesn't hurt my opinion of this album that he sings 9 of the 13 songs.

Overall, it's a great slice of pop paradise and Beatlemania, proving that there actually were some truly great albums made in 1964. This is far from the typical album of the era, with just a few great songs padded out by a bunch of filler. Every single track is a winner, with never a dull moment.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2007-05-24

This music is sweet -- no Beatles fan can neglect to add this to their collection. The music and the movie are a highlights from my childhood. Ahh, those were the days.

5 out of 5 stars What else but Fab!.......2007-05-14

These tunes are so much fun! The songs that were part of the soundtrack instantly take you back to the scenes in the film. What else can you say about the Beatles? Every song is good to excellent and each song points in a different musical direction. No fillers or junk where chord selection is flipped upside down and a similar song churned out. Fab four fabulous as usual!

5 out of 5 stars PURE BEATLES'SOUND!!!!!!!.......2007-05-05

This is the biggest example of the "beatlemania" fever; this album was so original (the only one album composed enterely of Lennon-McCartney songs) this was also their third album recorded and all the material are excellent and fresh, the fab four doing one of their best effords; very rock'n'roll songs like A HARD DAY'S NIGHT, I'M HAPPY JUST TO DANCE WITH YOU and TELL ME WHY, great acoustic ballads like AND I LOVE HER, IF I FELL and I'LL BE BACK, excellent pop songs like THINGS WE SAID TODAY and I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER, including the country song I'LL CRY INSTEAD, and the greatest No. 1 hit song CAN'T BUY ME LOVE! this album is essential in every beatles and rock and roll collection!!

5 out of 5 stars Pop music doesn't get better than this.......2007-04-08

Boy, things really moved quickly in 1964! On December 26th, 1963 I Wanna Hold Your Hand was released in the US. On February 9th Ed Sullivan introduced the Fab Four to American audiences. Almost 41% of the US population watched. By April 4th The Beatles occupied the top five spots on the Billboard "Hot 100". Their third LP, A Hard Day's Night was released on July 10th. The movie, filmed during 16 weeks in the spring, debuted in July in the UK and in August in North America. Before the year was out Beatles For Sale (In North America this was re-named, we lost a few songs, gained a few - it was released as Beatles '65) had hit the shelves. In the midst of all this the band toured the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the US (twice). I saw them on September 7th at Maple Leaf gardens in Toronto - last row, greys, $4.00! That the Beatles were able to write and record such a uniformly excellent LP as AHDN is a real testament to their immense creative talents.

As is so often the case the band starts off the record with a memorable sound. - George's instantly recognizable Rickenbacker. What follows are thirteen gems. There isn't a weak song amongst them and there are several masterpieces - the title track, If I Fell, And I Love Her and Can't Buy Me Love. I think that the songs that complete the album, that missed the cut for the movie, are just as strong as those that were included. The first Beatles LP had strong covers and some nice originals. The second had terrific originals. With this release Lennon and McCartney really hit their stride. I've listened to each of these songs dozens of times and I still get goose bumps. After a slight stumble with their next (Beatles For sale) the band never broke stride again.

For its first new set of music since 2000's Warning, Green Day tears up the blueprint and comes up with something unexpected: a punk rock concept album built around elaborate melodies, odd tempo changes, and a collection of songs that freely reference classic rock warhorses like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. "She's a Rebel" and "St. Jimmy" might sound like vintage Green Day, but the rest of the disc finds the Northern California trio trying on a variety of different guises: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a cliché-strewn Foo Fighters-style power ballad; "Extraordinary Girl" floats on Indian strings; and the hushed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Jessica Simpson record. It doesn't always work. "Dearly Beloved" eerily resembles the Alarm's "68 Guns," while the title track eerily resembles something Green Day has already done far too many times. But, overall, American Idiot represents a promising step forward. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

The first original album since 2000 from modern rock superheroes Green Day, American Idiot is one of the most anticipated and controversial albums of the year. Scathing yet self-effacing as it tells the tale of Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, American Idiot is the punk rock epic. "A bold, polished punk opera." (Entertainment Weekly) "They're the biggest, most successful, punk band the world has ever seen. What's more, Green Day's next album may well be their masterpiece." (Kerrang!)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars American Genius.......2007-07-08

There is a lot of excellent music here. "Holiday," "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Wake Me Up When September Ends," and of course the title track are destined to be Green Day classics. It is obvious these guys ave something to say, and this album spares no risks in delivering that message. It challenges us, as Americans, to look at ourselves and society. I love music like this. It has meaning. Green Day has reached their peak with this album. They will never sound this good again.

3 out of 5 stars Aims for "The Wall," achieves "Quadrophenia".......2007-07-06

As purported rock-opera/concept-albums go: don't even bother with the storyline. My personal theory is that they're pretty much making fun of us for even caring.

That leaves the songs, approximately half of which are more than solid on their own terms.

3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2007-06-30

I'am Not Usually Not A Big Fan Of Green Day. Really I Pretty Much Hate All Of There Album's. But For Some Reason I Actually Like This Album Ok. I Don't Know It's Like It's A Step Of Good For Green Day. It's Actually The Only Green Day Album I Own. I Proabably Recomend This One, But It's The Only One I Would.

4 out of 5 stars Who Cares what people say!!.......2007-06-29

I bought this album about 2 years ago when it came out. Being an old school Greenday fan some of this album was new to me,but is changing really a bad thing. Everyone says GreenDay sold out with this LP but does growing up musically really considered selling out. If that was true than great bands such as Pink Floyd would be considered sell outs. Being a true GreenDay fan I will say some of the songs on this album sort of have the album "Warning" sound to it. So if you like good concept music buy this album!!

4 out of 5 stars A whole new Green Day!.......2007-06-15

Leaving their goof ball punk days behind,American Idiot sheds new light on new light on Green Day that we have noty seen before. At the risk of abandening fans,Green Day new album has a totally different style shift from the latest album Warning. The base line is still very simple but produces and amazing rythim.Billy Joes vocals are amazing espeally on songs like Holiday or St. Jimmy.Green Day shift from punk to rock is simply there best decision in there lenthly carrer.

There's an old quote of St. Theresa's that goes something like, "More tears are shed over answered prayers than those that remain unanswered." In other words, be careful what you wish for--you just might get it. Don McLean, like any other singer-songwriter, no doubt wanted a hit, or some degree of success. "American Pie" gave him that and more. McLean's ode to Buddy Holly began with a folky intro that sounded like a protest song. Almost nine minutes later the song finally ends. Sure the song's poetic, sure it's a touching tribute, and sure, it's undeniably a classic. But it also became the bane of McLean's existence for many years as it was the only one of his songs that people wanted to hear. American Pie the album sold well on the strength of the title track, and even propelled the comparatively weak "Vincent" into the Top 20. A fine release rooted in folk, American Pie is a classic, whether anyone actually pays attention to the other songs or not. The 2003 reissue includes two bonus tracks—"Mother Nature" and "Aftermath." --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece of Spirituality in Rhythm and Verse.......2007-05-24

Don McLean's great use of rhythm and verse make this album a true treasure.

His songs remain unforgettable. His style completely distinct and seperated from his contemporaries.

Lastly, the emotion, his own emotions are captured so precisely and sweetly poetic.

It would be a shame if today's youth were not exposed to this collection of his songs.

5 out of 5 stars Bring back the memories.......2007-05-12

I still have the original LP!!! I love listening to McLean's on a clear sounding CD... What I like the most is that my teenager boys sing along to American Pie.

5 out of 5 stars One of the BEST OF THE BEST-LaLaLaLa LOVE IT!.......2007-03-29

This album is totally underrated and to some, forgotten. It is not only a classic for the gifted Don McLean; it is a heartfelt piece of poetry that you will listen to over and over again. I find some nuance, some depth of understanding and musical beauty each time I listen.
Songs like EMPTY CHAIRS, VINCENT, and even SISTER FATIMA are poetry set to music, and life experiences that most of us can identify with.
BRAVO, DON McLEAN - You still rock after more than 30 years!

5 out of 5 stars Empty Chairs.......2007-03-12

I was so strongly in agreement with an earlier review of The Don McLean "American Pie" Album which I have loved for almost as many years as its initial release. The song "Empty Chairs is a forever favorite and also brings a tear as often as I allow myself to experience the strong emotion of its heartfelt performance. I missed the cover by Garth Brooks and I'm very sure it must have been first rate.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars MacRae and Jones head a superb and O.K. adaptation.......2007-03-16

The film adaptation of Oklahoma heralded a technological breakthrough in widescreen cinema just as the original stage musical ushered in the integrated book musical. As such this film adaptation was treated as a special occasion, well-supervised by the creators themselves. The soundtrack, featured here, boasts sterling performances from MacRae and Jones making the most of their portrayals of Curly and Laurey, backed by a charismatic cast and superb orchestrations. And of course let's not forget the enveloping stereo sound that holds up well even today.

Despite being a Hollywood star, Gordon MacRae performs the part of Curly as if he was born to play it even on the stage. He shines vocally in his renditions of Oh, what a Beautiful Mornin' and Surrey with the Fringe on Top. He is well-partnered by Shirley Jones as a fresh and pert Laurey, lending her beautiful voice to the part. Although we don't hear much of her on this soundtrack, her partnering MacRae in People Will Say We're in Love exudes a masterful chemistry, as if they were setting sparks off at each other in their rendition of the song. Gene Nelson makes a dashing Will Parker and is equally well-matched by Gloria Grahame as Ado Annie. Grahame renders I Cain't Say No splendidly and partners Nelson in All er Nothin'. The supporting cast is filled out by Charlotte Greenwood's suitably caustic Aunt Eller and Rod Steiger's Jud. It's a pity that the film cut the song Lonely Room, otherwise Steiger would have better demonstrated the dark hues of the character of Jud. Yet it all adds up to a wonderful renditionh of this classic musical, enough to elicit a spontaneous YEOW! during this year of the Oklahoma centenary.

This EMI-Angel reissue offers one the advantage of the dance music and the main titles. This means that the listener gets the Kansas City and Farmer and the Cowman dance sequences, as well as the extended Dream Ballet. The only downside is the extraneous sound effects lifted from a DVD copy of the movie. Yes I share many of your sentiments that these sound effects tend to grate, and long for Didier Deutsch to have used the original untainted studio vault versions. However, let's at least be thankful that the CD producers have offered us a more comprehensive version of the Oklahoma soundtrack that we could only have dreamt of in the past.

In short, this is a wonderful and valuable addition to the R&H discography, and is an equally celebrated rendition of the score like the original Broadway cast recording. Warmly recommended to those who seek even their first version of Oklahoma.

5 out of 5 stars Broadway in a movie setting at it's very best!.......2007-03-06

I have the original Broadway version, but prefer this movie selection.
The CD is flawless and, in my opinion, there's nothing better than a Rodgers
and Hammerstein musical for music, lyrics and pure joy! This is the best!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-01-30

A great way to introduce oneself to the world of the nearly extinct Hollywood musical.

5 out of 5 stars Oh, what a beautiful sound!.......2006-03-26

Oklahoma has never sounded better as sung by Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones in the 1955 movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's unforgettable Broadway musical. The memory of MacRae's beautiful voice lives on with this CD. I never tire of hearing this wonderful music. From the opening overture to the finale you will feel as though you're right in the theater.

As each new Enya release has washed over all who have ears to hear, as each heaven-touched work leaves admirers sitting speechless in slack-jawed wonder, questions eventually come to mind: Might her layered, choral-like approach gradually become predictable or stale? Will she ever exhaust her deep reservoir of soul-stirring ideas? Remarkably, A Day Without Rain, Enya's fourth release since her 1988 breakthrough, Watermark, establishes new artistic heights for the gifted Irish vocalist and keyboardist. The project, polished and refined over a five-year period in the company of longtime collaborators Nicky Ryan (producer) and Roma Ryan (lyricist), may qualify as her best yet--a radiant, beatific collection of works that command attention with their cathedral-like resonance as they soothe your spirit with some of Enya's loveliest, most graceful voicings ever. The disc's opening three tracks (including the spellbinding "Only Time") form a gorgeous trilogy that suggest Enya has deepened her focus on the nexus where sophisticated pop and regal mysticism, the twin rivers of her singular sound, form a seamless intersection. The disc's gentle timbre is disturbed only once, and in memorable fashion, with "Tempus Vernum," a marshalling of mythic sonic forces that brings to mind the theme from the De Beers diamond commercial, but with a Celtic/Goth edge. Additional highlights abound. The closing "Lazy Days" will leave your soul dancing in a shower of flower petals and sunshine. A wonderful recording. --Terry Wood

3 out of 5 stars Classic Enya, But So What?.......2007-06-24

Now don't get me wrong -- I am an Enya fan. And as such I was looking forward to the release of the CD.

I probably listen to it the least of any of her CD's that I own (for the record, I have "Shepherd Moons," "Watermark," "The Memory of Trees," "The Celts," "Paint the Sky with Stars," and "Amarantine").

Why? Because with each previous (and subsequent) Enya release, there has been something that goes beyond the ethereal tones that we expect from her. And I just don't hear it here.

I do have my favourites on the CD just like anyone else ("Flora's Secret" and "Lazy Days"), but I wouldn't say that they stand out in any significant way from tracks on other CD's. If you have to choose one disc among Enya's later works, pick up Amarantine first, then grab this one later if you want a complete tome.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite Enya CD.......2007-02-11

love all the selections, some are upbeat & cheery others more melancholy.

5 out of 5 stars Relax.......2007-01-17

I have had this cd for about 4 years and it still has the same effect......RELAXATION. It makes me feel very calm and centered.
I have 4 cd's from Enya and this one is the one I listen to because I love Only time, A day without rain. Those are my favorites!
If you are a fan of hers this one is a must!

5 out of 5 stars A very special one........2007-01-09

This CD have a meaning to me, the song Only Time have a healing message for everyone. Is like having someone who is giving you an advice in trouble times. You have to get this CD!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Melodic and Uplifting.......2007-01-04

This selection of music from Enya could easily be called "The Best of Enya" for my money. The music is Melodic and at the same time Uplifting - - it evokes a relaxed state of mind and body and recharges the psyche. I would heartily recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for wedding planners.......2007-04-05

I work regularly with people planning church weddings who want the service to be dignified, traditional and formal. Often they have "ear memory" of music they've heard in other weddings, but no idea about its composer or title. This CD is the best compilation I've found of music that fits those requirements. Selections include great music and performances make it easy to imagine how they would sound in a particular church or other setting. Includes works by Protestant, Catholic and secular composers.

This CD was inexpensive, and provided a great way to preview songs for my wedding. The CD had a good song selection. My fiance and I were able to get a better idea of how the songs would be at our wedding. Definitely an inexpensive tool that is worthwhile.

The Book of Genesis tells us that God created "the evening and the morning" on the third day. It's hard to say when is the best time to listen to this southern Christian rock act's rousing tunes, though morning is likely the best, as their anthemic alt-rock is filled with enough praise and worship to get even the most jaded listener through the day. In their 11-year recording history, the band has built up a loyal fanbase, won Dove and Grammy awards, and spent innumerable miles on the road. On Chronology, Vol. 1, Third Day looks back at the first half of their career with a dual CD/DVD disc with characteristic generosity. A handful of live and rare numbers round out new mixes of hits like "Forever" and "I've Always Loved You," while two of their most-loved early numbers, "My Hope Is You" and "Thief," have been entirely re-recorded. The DVD is the real meat here, with five early music videos, six live performances from the Dove shows, and excerpts from eight handheld videos made by fans, which all show how hard these guys can kick it. This is no paint-by-numbers best-of, but an awesome tribute that will satisfy devoted fans and the newly curious alike. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars XLNT!.......2007-05-15

Let me start off by saying Third Day's Cronology volume 1 is a fantastic dc/dvd! You are definately getting you're money's worth! Not only are you getting an audio cd packed with hitsongs, rarities, and live performances, you're also gonna a dvd full of realy neat stuff! I'd like to tell you a little about the cd first. The audio portian of this package contains 18 tracks, most of whitch are not available elswhere. You get remixes of songs from the band's debut album simply entitled "Third Day" as well as a newly recorded verssion of"Thief" You get stuff from their 2nd 3rd, and 4th albums, as well as previously unreleased live performances of "Black Bird" and "Alien" There's also a newly recorded verssion of "My Hope is You" But wait there's more! You also get tracks from a rare 1999 ep. Still not convinced this a bargin? The dvd features early videos, live performances, and bootleg videos from the early 90s before Third Day was signed to a record deal. But I'm not quite finished yet! There's also audio commentary from the band durring the early videos and the bootlegs. So there you have it! everything that comes in this wonderful package. I think that Chronology vol 1 is an outstanding retrospective on Third Day's early, as well as an absolute bargin for the price even if you pay fullprice. Trust me you're getting your $'s worth. PS Be on the lookout for Chronology vol2 release date August 17th 2007 Thanks for reading my review. K C stewart

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE!!!.......2007-05-14

If you are a Third Day fan this cd/dvd combo is a MUST HAVE!!! It has some great history about the band and you can watch how they have all grown up together. God has tremendously blessed them, because they have all been faithful to Him. I have really enjoyed this collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Compilation for the fans.......2007-04-01

Although I'm a big Third Day fan, I bought this mainly for the DVD stuff and was quite pleased with the overall CD/DVD package (the DVD stuff is great for any fan). In fact, I was pretty shocked at how good this CD was. Before I purchased it, I wasn't excited to hear "remakes" of their old stuff; I have all of their albums on my iPod, so why would I need to hear it again? But I tell you what, I absolutely love the new mixes / remakes. For example, I liked how Thief was from their first album, but it wasn't a favorite of mine...something was missing. The new version of Thief on this CD is exactly what was missing. The new arrangement is what this song needed from day 1. I've listed to that song 5-10 times already while working around the house. And, the other songs are just as good. The mix of remakes, new takes, live ones, and rare ones are worth the investment.

If you're the least bit interested, pick it up...you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome,Awesome,Awesome.......2007-03-30

I have every Third Day CD, and almost didn't get this one because I figured it didn't have anything new on it. Boy , am I glad I didn't pass this one up! The DVD disc alone is worth the purchase price! And then the new version of Thief is a very nice addition. But I have to say my favorite new song ( which is not new. they recorded it in 1999, but never released it) is "Long Time Coming". That is an awesome song! If you like Third Day ( and who couldn't)You will love this song. And the other new/old song, "She Sings in Riddles", is very good too. This set is almost as good as seeing them live, and in one way it's better - You can put it on any time you want to.

5 out of 5 stars pleasant suprise.......2007-03-28

Ok so I am a fan of Third Day and have every album and have been a regular at their shows when they come to town but lately, I have been HOOKED on Hillsong United "United We Stand". So literally for the past month, that is the only cd I have listened to and today was my first break to listen to Third Day's latest and I can say that for all the songs, the little booklet and the DVD, it is an excellent bargain. Plus I love the new remix of Thief (my personal favorite) and My Hope is You is also a great new remix. This should defintely be in your collection if you are a Third Day fan. I don't know if a newcomer could really appreciate it though. I think that if you were newly introduced to them, one should go with Time & Offerings I & II first and then go back and get their other albums....Conspiracy #5 grew on me but once I finally "got" it, I loved it. Regardless, it is an excellent deal and nice suprises and hilarious video outtakes in the DVD. I don't think it is meant to be funny but I thought the video of Thai's first performance was funny and cute. Mac still looks the same but I reckon he will age nicely. I am so glad that they continue to make music that represents and glorifies God and our Saviour and I will continue to look forward to any Third Day creation in the years ahead!!

Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor. --Billy Altman

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Oh, for Pete's sake!.......2007-06-07

I remember dancing to "Basketcase" at my middle school mixers when I was 12. I thought the song was absolutely amazing. I loved Green Day, couldn't imagine a time when I wouldn't love Green Day.

Well, my friends, that time has come. Green Day, along with the other alterna/grunge/punk rock groups of the nineties, have ceased to endure. It's sad, really, to think that a whole jaunre of music has boiled down to ultimate mediocrity. I agree with another reviewer, a kid, who notes that the songs ARE good the first hundred times; they're just not good ever after. By 1996, I was done with Green Day and the like. My general dissatfication with music left me restless and by a stroke of luck led me overseas to the Brit Pop movement of the 90s propelled by The Stone Roses, Suede, and Pulp, to name a few. ("I'm so bored with USA" shouted The Clash in 1977; I felt that sentiment twenty years later.) Finally, music as good today as yesterday and the day before that.

At any rate, back to Green Day specifically. All of this discussion as to whether or not Green Day is punk is absurd. Punk began in the seventies with The Ramones, The Sex Pistols, and The Clash along with many others. The jaunre most prominately morphed into Post-Punk (ie Joy Division, Psychedelic Furs etc., now called Neo Post Punk ie Interpol), but it never ceased to exist unto itself. Punk is most vaguely defined as three cord music accompanied by vituperative, nihilistic lyrics. Is Green Day therefore punk? Absolutely. It could also be classified loosely as Alternative, but definately not grunge music. The better question here is whether or not Green Day is good Punk? What is it that they do with those three cords that make their work special?

The true answer is, not much. The music on Dookie has very little range and the lyrics are positively negligible. I mean, who was ever prompted to scream "Anarchy!!!" at the sound of a Green Day song? Think a minute... My point exactly. Punk that misses its mark. In addition, BJA's voice is an utter horror, which can work to the music's benefit, but not in this case. These are the three major problems with Green Day's Dookie, problems that make it not only bad punk, but also not so good music.

Now, I know I am going to get bashed with "unhelpful" votes for stating my opinion. Please be conscious then, that my review is not for someone who already loves Green Day, but for someone who uses Amazon as I do, as a source iin order to define their future investments in music.

I would like to end my review by stating that Green Day have muiscally improved over the years; I was impressed with their recent growth in the form of American Idiot. They have only gotten better when many bands just get worse. Now, do I like their music? More important, do I listen to their new music and want to scream "Anarchy!". Hell no! Thank the Lord I have Folk-Rock's subtle and poetic Bright Eyes for that.

5 out of 5 stars One of the biggest landmarks in music history.......2007-05-21

Green Day's third album, Dookie, has to be one of the greatest albums of all time anyway you look at it. The raunchy 1994 take-over-the-world album definately falls into my list of the top 100 greatest albums of all time, and I'm not saying that because of today's American Idiot craze. It helped kick off the mid to early 90s punk scene and proved that the trio are musical geniuses. The MTV hits, like "Longview," "When I Come Around," and "Basket Case" are some of the best songs in Green Day's arsenal, and it's to no one's surprise that they're contained in this album. So why is this album so great? Here's a song by song breakdown for an answer.

1) Burnout- 9/10 One of my all time favorite Green Day songs. It just screams "rebellious," as Billie Joe sings "I declare I don't care no more... I'm burnin' up and out I'm growing bored, in my smoked-out boring room" as the opening power chords start off the song. A definitive hit.

2) Having a Blast- 8/10 A great experimentation song, but somewhat weird vocals. Still pretty good though.

3) Chump- 9/10 Yet another song that represents the overall attitude of Green Day. It's about how Billie Joe's then girlfriend, Adrienne Nesser, cheats on him during the recording of the album, but it's not her he's mad at, it's the guy she's cheating on him with; hence the lyrics and feeling of the song.

4) Longview- 10/10 One of Green Day's most underrated songs of all time. Being transitional with Chump, it starts out with a heavy rain of bass drums by Tre Cool and a signature bass riff by Mike Dirnt. The lyrics and riffs of the song are brilliant, and is a great Green Day song to listen to if you've just come out of the American Idiot craze.

5) Welcome to Paradise- 9.5/10 Probably the most punk-rocking Green Day song you'll ever hear. The opening power chords make you rave for more as Billie Joe spits out "Dear mother, can you hear me whining? It's been three whole weeks since I have left your home". The eerie interlude of speeding bass, guitar, and drums all at once are a perfect fit for the song, in which after Billie Joe sings "Dear mother, can you hear me laughing? It's been six whole months since I have left your home," which is completely contrare to the first verse. Another must-listen.

6) Pulling Teeth- 8.5/10 Pretty good, which an actual touch of humor to it. It tells a tale of when bassist Mike Dirnt and his wife have a pillow fight and Mike ends up breaking both of his arms. No filler track here.

7) Basket Case- 10/10 Another masterpiece by the band. It starts out with speeding power chords which follow Billie Joe singing "Do you have the time to listen to me whine about nothing and everything all at once?", which immediately has you thinking that it's going to be an awesome song. Catchy, awesome fun.

8) She- 8/10 A nice, concert-popular song with an awesome bass riff that starts it off. It picks up where Chump left off, as it tells of how things are cooling down in Billie Joe's relationship with his girlfriend, and by that time, his girlfriend's life is a wreck. A good, easy-listener.

9) Sassafras Roots- 8/10 A simple song to say to least, but many parts of it are more catchy than you think. Another song that shouldn't be skipped while listening.

10) When I Come Around- 10/10 A very powerful song that could almost pass as a ballad. To me this song kills "Polly" and "All Apologies" by Nirvana, which barely even comes close to being good. When I Come Around is definately Green Day's finest moment in songwriting, and could possibly be their best song to date. No flaws found here.

11) Coming Clean- 9/10 Much similar to Burnout, this song is also a more "rebellious" song--it contains the witty lyrics and guitar work by Billie Joe, and a massive effort by the rest of the band. Also a catchy Green Day hit.

12) Emenius Sleepus- 9/10 This song really shows the mastery of bassist Mike Dirnt, as he was the brainchild behind it. This song is easily one of the best you'll here on the album, and like most of the album, is a song mustn't be skipped.

13) In the End- 8.5/10 A song that IS good, but then again, isn't the band's greatest. Like the previous two, it's quite catchy and doesn't provide any filler. A great listen.

14) F.O.D.- 9/10 A great song which also proves that Green Day can be wild hardcore punk-rockers. It starts out with soft vocals and acoustic guitar play, and near the third quarter the electric guitar comes in and Billie Joe starts singing a second chorus which repeats the title of the song, in word form. A nice, clean finish for the album.

So without any further ado, this album is a must-have in everyone's collection, and is one of the biggest landmarks in music history. Its punk-rocking attitude and overall feeling are what give it its recognition as a classic, and the album alone could stand to represent Green Day. There was even a hidden track which started about three minutes after "F.O.D." called "All By Myself," which was sung by drummer Tre Cool. Unfortunatly this track was removed on the CD version of the album, but can still be heard on the original records. To avoid making this review any longer than it already is, I'll just stop here by saying once again that this is one of the greatest albums of all time, and should be contained in everyone's collection.

5 out of 5 stars One Of My All Time Favorite Albums!!!.......2007-04-09

This album is the reason there are so many Pop/Punk bands around today, In my oppinion. Green Day were rocking out long before there was a Blink-182 or Simple Plan. "Dookie" is often considered to be one of the best albums of the early nineties and it's easy to understand why. This album is loaded with catchy, sing-a-long type songs and an unmatched musical energy. If you are a rock fan you've most likely found yourself flipping through the car radio, looking for something and landing on a Green Day song and whether or not you'll admit it, you soon found yourself singing along to it as you drove. This is the band that started it all for Pop/Punk and this is the record they did it with. "Dookie" is an absolute essential for any rock fan's collection.....If you don't have it in yours..GET IT!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest ever........2007-03-22

For my generation, this was the white album. Back in 199whatever I was but a teenager in highschool, struggling to find myself and to find acceptance among my peers. Alas, to no avail and I just ostracized myself from everyone. Anyway, that isn't here nor there. This was the genre-defying album that was the new face of punk. It wasn't political like it's predecessors, nor was it purposely inaudible and obnoxious. It was part of a new future for punk-rock as a genre. It was scarey because it defied the punk creed. At the same time it was amazing because it spawned an entire generation of "pop-punk." But none could ever par up to Green Day. Dookie set the standard, and set itself apart from bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. It was still punk and the spirit they showed here remains even in their current latest effort, "American Idiot." Whether you like it or not, Green Day did something extrodinary with this album and it started a phenomenom that will always be remembered. When I think of 90's music, I will always think of Green Day as a result. Thank these guys for changing music history.

3 out of 5 stars Fun Punk brings Green Day to its MTV heyday.......2007-01-14

I was introduced to Green Day back in 1994 right around the time they released 'Dookie.' One of my friends who was into the punk music scene had bought the CD and knew about Green Day before me and friends. He spread it around to our area and encouraged me to purchase 'Dookie' the next time I went to a record store.

So I bought 'Dookie' when the album was on the pop charts, when Green Day first became popular and many people were talking about them. Since punk originated in the mid-70's and gained popularity into the '80s, Green Day's 1990's music was considered a "new breed" of punk music. Not quite punk, not quite pop, not quite rock, but sort of a blend between all three. They weren't easily categorized, partly due to the level of fame they achieved. Nobody knew quite where to put them.

On 'Dookie,' Green Day delivers this quirky blend of musics and lyrics in typically catchy fashion. The CD really starts four tracks in with "Longview," a pessimistic but uptempo rant about the singer's life and problems. The next track, "Welcome to Paradise" shifts tone slightly to one of hedonistic pleasure with sardonic undertones. On the other hand, "Basket Case" is an introspective, fast-tempo rock ballad whose harmonic structure resembles and may have been consciously or unconsciously based on Pachelbel's "Canon in D major". "When I Come Around" is another sort of rock ballad, an outspoken, mid-tempo closer to this memorable CD.

'Dookie' lifted Green Day from their state of regional adoration to international fame at a time when MTV and the media started noticing them. The confident lead singer of the group, Billie Joe Armstrong, was becoming a household name. In terms of the popularity of the album, the raw 'Dookie' blazed a new punk trail through pop territory with a number of hit songs, staking out a place on MTV. With their increased exposure and popularity, the band continued to take on challenges and write additional thought-provoking popular songs. In a little more than a decade since the release of 'Dookie,' Green Day has secured a lasting place in pop music and most certainly will be remembered well into the future.

Check out 'Dookie' for its gritty style, raw subject matter, catchy tunes, and to experience some of what early Green Day hype was about.

Yes, the original version of that FM oldie "White Bird" is included on this CD. Formed in 1967 by former symphony violinist David LaFlamme, this popular group plowed through all of the San Francisco Sound's clichés at once: organ, fiddle and drum solos; epigrammatic sayings about love, time, and dreams that are so cheesy they would make a Hallmark hack blush; the soft-part-that-heads-steadily-toward-the-crescendo part; incongruously pieced-together prog-rock songs that plod on for way too long; off-kilter male and female singing; and a near-total lack of soul. This 1969 recording, then, is a clear blueprint of what not to do in psychedelic rock--with the exception of "White Bird," which retains a sheen of innocence and melodic oomph despite its daft, repeated utterance that "she must fly!" This reissue has a bright, clear sound and excellent separation; it will more than please fans of the original LP. However, those looking for an equal to the best works of Moby Grape, Quicksilver, and the Dead are encouraged to seek elsewhere. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-03-19

I had one of the songs off this CD stuck in my head for weeks. I finally got my song fix and it was great!

5 out of 5 stars I don't know about "the San Fran sound", but I know IT'S A BEAUTIFUL SOUND..........2007-02-23

This album was recorded well before I was born so this review will not be based on subjective and biased memories...though I wish I could have experienced this band back in that era because a lot of great music was created back then. I am not familiar with the so-called "San Franscisco sound" but I do know of other bands in this era such as Jefferson Airplane, the Doors, King Crimson, and Procol Harum (these are bands I mention because I think elements of their sound can be heard in It's a Beautiful Day).

BEAUTIFUL!!! That word really does describe this album better than anything else in the english vocabulary. The cover of the album reminds me of the movie 'The Sound of Music' and the music is pure genius. Take a typical 4 peice 60's band (bass, guitar, drums, vocals) then add keyboards with psychedelic sound effects, a very talented violinist, a female vocalist, and a variety of other instruments...combine all this with gorgeous melodies, poetic lyrics, and progressive song compositions = BEAUTIFUL!!!

I won't take the time to dissect every song but I will make mention that "White Bird" really is as wonderful as all the other reviewers have made it out to be. Other highlights for me were the psychedelic and very catchy melodies of "Girl With No Eyes", the distorted guitars and upbeat tempo of "Wasted Union Blues", the guitar licks and harmonies of the instrumental song "Bombay Calling", and the diverse and crazy "Time Is" (almost 10 minutes in length and includes a great percussion solo). There is really no filler on this album and David Lafamme's voice is just as moving as his violin. As the lyrics of "Bulgaria" suggest: "Open up your mind!"

BEAUTIFUL!!!

RECOMMENDATION: As mentioned earlier in my review - fans of the Doors, King Crimson, Jefferson Airplane, or Procol Harum should dig this music. If you are already familar with It's A Beautiful Day then those aforementioned bands should be part of your music collection as well. Also highly recommended is the band Camel's 1975 instrumental masterpiece entitled 'The Snow Goose'. See my profile for more suggestions.

4 out of 5 stars It's A Beautiful Day - self-titled (San Francisco Sound).......2007-01-13

Review no. 115. For a semi-obscure act,I was amazed at seeing over a hundred reviews for this 'cult classic', sort to speak. Originally released in 1969, this was It's A Beautiful Day's debut record. I remember my baby sitter playing this lp several times, as I always thought it was, like sort of cool-but at the same time a bit strange. Now, light years later, I like getting to check out the CD reissue. Tunes I was most impressed with were "White Bird", "Summer Day"(most older fans should recall this cut), "Bombay Calling" and the somewhat eerie "Bulgaria". Good old school San Francisco psychedelic / folk rock.Line-up: David LaFlamme-flute, violin&vocals, wife Linda-organ&piano, Hal Wagenet-guitar,Mitchell Holman-bass and Pattie Santos-percussion&vocals. Unless your memory is a mite rusty, this band might appeal to fans of Jefferson Airplane, Traffic, Spirit, the Strawbs and possibly Soft Machine.

It was a great pleasure to hear this music again!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-01-04

This album (back in the days of vinyl) is the first record I ever bought. White Bird is probably one of the best pieces ever written and David LaFlamme's violin work is wonderful. Hot Summer Day is a nice bluesy piece. Girl With No Eyes is haunting (though I have to admit I never have fully understood what they're talking about). Bombay Calling is a great instrumental piece showing off LaFlamme's talents on the violin. Bulgaria is deep and somber. The final piece, Time Is, is maybe typical of the Hippie SF days in its lyrics but it is a great piece of music and, played loudly, does a great job of getting into your head. Get this album and enjoy one of the more interesting bands from the late 60's. And, if they come to town (yup, still playing and touring a bit), go see them. They are better live.
