From the Artist
During my travels, I have discovered a wealth of music that is not generally known to concert audiences or horn players. In recitals, I champion these works to the universal enjoyment of the audience members. I have included three lesser known works on this project. Being that there is very little recital music in the late romantic style, I decided to offer Joseph Haas' Sonata. Written in 1910, it carries the same elements as Josef Rheinberger's and Karl Pilss' chamber works for horn and piano. Two newer works, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina (1981) and Markus Rindt's Impressions in Jazz (1996) offer a diverse musical language that has consistantly appealled to concert audiences. Finally, the opportunity to present a reference recording of Schubert's Auf dem Strom as originally conceived was an opportunity not to be missed. Because of the difficulty of the tenor part, a soprano voice is usually substituted. With the artistry of my collaborators Howard Lubin! (piano) and Salvatore Champagne (tenor) I have been able to produce a quality disc with these wonderful artists. I know you will enjoy these selections as my recital audiences have.

About the Artist
Eldon Matlick is Professor of Horn at the University of Oklahoma School. In addition, he is the Principal Hornist of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic Orchestra. He earned a BME from Eastern Kentucky University and holds an MM in Performance and a DM in Brass Pedagogy from Indiana University.

Mr. Matlick is a former finalist in the Heldenleben International Horn Competition, one of the major world venues in solo horn competition. He is also an extensive recitalist, performing frequently not only... read more

Enjoyable Classical Music.......2006-10-26

This cd is great because unlike other classical music cds made for babies, this one even adults can enjoy. Sometimes they change the song so that it sounds more like something a baby will appeal too, but this one just keeps the original song format which means even people without babies would be able to enjoy some of Mozart's classics.

Beautiful Collection of Classical Music.......2006-08-07

This is a fantastic CD of beautiful music. It is uplifting and soothing at the same time. I have several good classic music compilations CDs, but this is my favorite and the one that gets played daily! When the littlest one is napping, it goes on. When I'm cooking, it goes on. When we have the TV off and the kids are playing games or making puzzles, it is on! It stays in my kitchen CD player so at a touch of a button, lovely music can fill the house.

Check out the samples above (my [...] especially likes #5, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star). It is not "children's music," a disc of lullabies, or something to reserve for baby shower gifts. I cannot say enough good things about this disc! This is great music that makes you feel good - if it is building our brains too, all the better! Try it and enjoy :)

Build baby's brain with Classics Vol 2.......2006-07-25

I am a true fan of Classical music and this was purchased as a gift for a co-worker who is adopting a child from China. Therefore I did not open it nor listen to it. The recipient is now overseas picking up their daughter so I know they haven't had the opportunity to listen to it. I think it's a great idea, though.

NOT JUST FOR BABIES!.......2004-06-02

This is a beautiful CD, and my husband and I (fortyish and empty nesters) listen to this CD every night when we go to bed. It is gentle and very soothing and puts us right to sleep. I primarily bought this album because of "Turkish March/Ruins of Athens." I am writing a children's book and that particular piece embodies my little pixie heroine just right! I recommend this CD to everyone...not just babies!

This is a very convenient coupling of works in greatly distinguished performances. Schumann's late Cello Concerto is a piece that can ramble out of control unless you keep a tight rein on it, but it also needs to be played expansively. Yo-Yo Ma sings the music beautifully, but still keeps his rhythms firm, and Davis's work with the fine-sounding orchestra matches every detail in the solo playing. Ma and Emmanuel Ax give typically extroverted performances of Schumann's cello works (complete except for one arrangement), although the recorded balance between the instruments varies from work to work. I was asked to bring favorite CDs to a Music History class on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation. Yo Yo Ma with his piano accompanist featured in the Cello Concerto. I don't always know what I am listening to, but I know what I like. The mello cello doing Schumann is my idea of a great way to spend a late summer evening. The price is right for Our Price, See all new, and See all used. No way am I going to resell mine. I buy these three and hold, not like the stock market. Yes, Du Pre is excellent. But isn't it glorious who comes out of Julliard. Schumann's Adagio and Allegro by Ma and Ax are also worthwhile. My fancy is stuck on the Fantasiesstuke.

First Rate Concerto With Bonuses.......2000-10-27

This recording of Schumann's Cello Concerto by Yo-Yo Ma, with Sir Colin Davis conducting the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, is truly first rate. My first experience with the Schumann Cello Concerto was Jacqueline du Pre's version on EMI. While that performance is perfectly good, I find Ma's reading to be superior. I also prefer that this disc sticks to music for cello, while the du Pre includes the Schumann piano concertos played by her husband Daniel Barenboim. On this disc, Ma again joins his favorite partner in crime, Emanuel Ax, to perform three gorgeous pieces for cello and piano. Yet again, Yo-Yo Ma sets the bar for all Cello Concerto performances to come.

Well, not "Perfect"..........2004-04-19

Like the other reviewer, I feel it's difficult to label this CD "The Perfect Mozart" without including the 25 Symphony. However, that shows how pointless it is to label ANY CD "The Perfect Mozart" - especially just a single CD. Most of my favorite Mozart isn't on here. It just goes to show how silly it is to think of a Mozart "greatest hits" album.

However, what is important is how the pieces on the album are played and I must say that they are all played well. Much of it is conducted by Neville Mariner, who did the music for the movie Amadeus. I am listening to the CD now and for some reason - possibly because of the irreverent nature of the album - on the computer all the performers are labeled "some dumb orchestra".

All in all, this is not the "only" Mozart album you will ever need, but it is a good random sampling of some of Wolfgang's catchier tunes.

It must be tough to compile a "best of" type selection for a composer as prolific as Mozart. I picked this CD up yesterday and was very happy with what selections it included. I would have to say that if it included the rousing opening movement to Mozart's 25th Symphony, it surely would be the "Perfect Mozart". I have a ton of other Mozart CD's, but none of them amass all of the most recognizable pieces quite like this one. Highly recommended.

Yo-Yo Ma aiming for suavity in Schumann.......2006-05-20

Yo-Yo Ma isn't exactly the anti-Rostropovich. He is capable of fervor in his lower-key way, but to me the Schumann Cello Concerto cries out for more than smooth savity of tone and impeccable manners, which is what Ma offers here, abetted by a sleepwalking accompaniment from Colin Davis. Du Pre and Rostropovich throw themselves into this music as if their souls depend on it, carrying the work along in one grand sweep of emotion. If you think their approach is over the top, here is its opposite. Likewise, although Ax and Ma make a familir partnership, I wish they would show more passion in the various works for piano and cello. Compared to Britten and Rostropovich on Decca, these readings belong in a quiet Victorian hotel lobby.

AS MOST OF MOZART'S MUSIC THERE ARE A LOT OF JEWELS HERE.
SOME WORKS WERE MADE IN MOZARTS BEGINNINGS AS COMPOSER BUT THIS MUSIC IS NOT ONLY FOR COMPLETISTS.

Mozart, Mostly For Completists.......2007-01-22

To celebrate the 250th birth of Mozart last year, Philips reissued their "Complete Mozart Edition" in space-saving, slim paper boxes instead of those big clunky jewel cases. Most of the sets were simply repackaged, but this one combined two of the previous releases -- "Theatre and Ballet Music" and "Rarities and Surprises" -- into one five disc collection. As my title for this review suggests, much of this material is arguably for completists only. However, there is a lot of enjoyable music, particularly the Divertimenti from the London Sketchbook and the ballet music from "Idomeneo" and "Les Petits Riens." The set's worst moments come, in my opinion, during the choppy, fragmented third disc, which at times feels like the exact opposite of a "Greatest Hits" rock album. It does end amusingly with the whimsical "A Musical Dice Game" -- pour another glass of vino Sir Neville -- but it certainly won't warrant repeated listenings. The other frustrating thing about this set is that timewise it could have easily been squeezed on to four discs, saving us consumers approximately $8. If this was a 4CD set (or you manage to pick it up used) it would be worth 4 stars, but as is and at full price I have to settle for 3, since much of this music is marginally worth it to begin with.

Very good reading, but not the best, of really lovely music.......2004-02-16

As a long-time fan of Janacek, I know this recording from LP. It is quite well played, and is one of the only recordings out there of Janacek's wonderful and generally neglected piano works. My only problem with it is that I also have a recording of some of this music (also on LP, and not available on CD, alas) by Ivan Moravec. Like many of Moravec's recordings, that one ruined anyone else's interpretation for me - it is delicate, nuanced and in places capable of moving one to tears. Firkusny's playing is more straightforward, maybe a trifle colder, but the quality of the music still comes across.

Wonderful music, but I'm not sure I like the interpretation.......2003-01-18

Janacek is one of my favorite composers; I am currently learning "On the Overgrown Path" on the piano. I bought this CD based on the glowing reviews on this site.
I myself don't much care for Firkusny's style. I am only a student. More importantly, I think, I am an American; perhaps I'm too ignorant of Czech style to appreciate the interpretation. That said, I want more clarity. I want the rubato to be more overt. I love the music, but I want it to be more overwhelming---I really like the Guarneri Quartet's interpretation of the string quartets.
I'd be interested in hearing Schiff's interpretation of this music; I'm not sure I'd recommend Firkusny unless you are a scholar or a true devotee of Czech style.

Absolutely breath-taking.......2000-06-20

This is, simply put, one of the best CD sets out there. Janacek truly had a gift for writing piano music, and, equally so, Firkunsky had a gift for interpreting them. Every piece on these discs is a gem, from the peaceful "On the Overgrown Path" to, my personal favorite, the intense and mature "Capriccio", these CDs have no weak points. If you are at all a fan of Moravia's greatest composer, or if you are looking for an introduction to his works, this is a can't miss.

Firkusny redraws a misguided portrait........1999-01-15

These are the first Janacek CDs I have purchased. Previously I heard some of the operas and had been only mildly interested in the great Czech. From those earlier experiences I had drawn a certain image of Janacek that these CDs have forced me to reimagine. "On The Overgrown Path" is performed with such simple warmth that it is overwhelming. "Reminiscence", according to the CD jacket, was Janacek's final work. It is an historic half a minute. The two movement sonata - the last movement to which Janacek apparently tore to pieces and hurled into a river - is a wonderful blend of Czech morbidity and intermittent promise. This is an awesome release that any pianophile absolutely must own. I would have given it ten stars if I could.
