When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. Rix

Ring introduction critique.......2006-11-04
This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.
FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16
This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.
It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.
On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.
This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.
Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28
Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.
If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.
Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15
I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.
Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.
Very Functional.......2006-03-19
This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

The best Anita CD!.......2005-10-04
This is the best CD Anita has ever released. Every song is better than the next. "Fairy Tales", "Perfect Love Affair" & "Love You To The Letter" are perfect examples of the Anita sound that she has come to be synonymous with. If you are an Anita fan, you simply must have this CD. You will not be disappointed!
ANITA DESERVES A STANDING OVATION!.......2005-06-23
Anita is at her best on this album, the other musicians such as Nathan East (bass), Ricky Lawson (drums), Greg Philliganes (Piano), Vernone Fails (Keyboards) are all at their finest producing melodic improvisation. Michael J.Powell also deserves some credit for the crystal clear quality on this fine produce.
In my humble opinion, this is Anita's best album, she is smooth, sophisticated & sexy, in fact she's simply peerless, no one can compare & no one even comes close.
Anita glides effortlessly through this album with great panache. Her phrasing is timely and above all accurate.
The stand out for me on this album is "Love you to the letter" as I'm a sucker for old-fashioned lyrics. It rates as one of my top 10 romantic ballads of all times (pretty much alongside "There's no easy way" by James Ingram).
If anyone deserves a standing ovation in the hall of fame of rhythm & blues, it certainly is Anita Baker. I'm beginning to believe in her fairy tales!
The Greatest.......2005-06-15
I"m a 25 year old male and I have been listening to Anita Baker since I was about 7 years old and this album is a masterpiece just like all the rest. She is the greatest to me and always will be. Anita is the only artist that I know of that I can listen to every album which I own everyone of them and I can always find a song to fit my mood. The Greatest enough said!
Steamy & Mellow!!!.......2005-06-13
This is one of Anita Baker's most complex works. Most of the songs were written by Anita in collaboration with other accomplished songwriters.
Some of the highlights include the richly intricate "Talk To Me". Next there's the most mellow "Perfect Love Affair" with Anita's velvety vocal. "Soul Inspiration", with a dazzling arrangement and Anita's full-bodied vocal, is a shining star! "Lonely" is fascinating with its varied tempos and Anita's sultry vocal. She builds this one to a red-hot frenzy! The piano solo is a cooker as well. Then there's "No One To Blame" with its bluesy atmosphere and raw emotion. The finale "Fairy Tales" weaves a lyrical story complete with a fine arrangement as Anita's vocal builds along with this tale. Kudos to Greg Phillinganes on the piano solo at the end. It is hot!!
A very original and unorthodox album for its time........2004-07-30
This album had much stronger jazz influences than Baker's three previous albums. At a time when most female R&B singers were turning to heavily-synthesized and terribly over-produced club/ dance music, Baker refused to compromise her artistry -- in the end, she came up with a real winner. "Talk To Me", "Whatever It Takes", "More Than You Know", "Perfect Love Affair" and "Soul Inspiration" are all excellent examples of smooth and classy Adult Contemporary-R&B at its best. No serious fan of adult-oriented R&B or jazz vocals should be without this album.

great CD for little babies.......2007-07-05
I am native spanish and this CD is the closest to the music I've had when I was little. Music is soft with no annoying voices. My 4 month old baby loves it already. Many of the songs are fun to dance with and in others you can signal with your hands while singing. Highly recommended.
Great CD and fun to listen too for parents...and baby!.......2006-12-23
We have a 10 month old and we can only speak English to her. To introduce her to the Spanish language we got this CD of music and the whole family loves it, including the little one. We all love dancing around the living room while its playing. Its also has 5 or 6 spoken parts to expose the baby to the spoken word. Also, its been a great CD to put her to sleep with because to songs are so soft an pleasing. You can't go wrong with this one!
Excellent sound quality, diversity of voices/songs.......2006-05-27
As a non-native Spanish speaker trying to expose our daughter to as much Spanish as possible (my husband only speaks English to her), this is a perfect CD with easily understood (i.e. not too fast, nor too many voices singing at once) and fun music in Spanish. The music quality is great and diversity of people singing (women, men, children) is broader than other CD's I've heard. Also, there are quite a few tracks!
Good musicians and creative arrangements.......2005-11-28
It can be hard to find children's music in Spanish that parents can also enjoy, but this is it. These performers sing well and have put together some delightful arrangments of old standards as well as some new songs. My Spanish-speaking kids (ages 4 and 1) love it and always get up to dance during their favorites.

Successful crossing over from East to West.......2007-07-06
Nowadays many classical musicians move to 'cross-overs' between Western classics to exotic works, and Chinese musicians and composers pioneer in cross-overs from Chinese music to Western.
Alas, not all attempts are successful. Either there has not been enough nurturing in the Chinese repertoire, or the western playing style has not yet been fully developed.
Ms. Yang is a young classical guitarist. Gathering from what she said in her own introduction to this disc, she is a musician with a great ambition. It is true that the classical guitar may not have a substantial repertoire as other western instruments like the violin and piano. Hence drawing materials from other culture in a guitarist's repertoire is both a necessity and an endeavour.
A guitarist from Beijing, Ms. Yang is familiar with classical Chinese instruments like the gu qing, the zheng and the pipa. These ancient Chinese instruments are like the guitar- all are played by plucking strings set on wooden surfaces. So as Ms Yang herself noted - the guitar originated from the Middle East, a 'cross-over' area of Eastern and Western culture.
In many of the modern works recorded in this disc, Ms Yang played the guitar to the effect of those ancient Chinese instruments, and this is quite stunning. Her familiarity with the Eastern musical style is fully demonstrated, adding the requisite flavour of authenticity to her interpretation. There are a number of great compositions of the gu qing, the zheng as well as the pipa, and I truly look forward to Ms Yang's transcriptions of those to the guitar in due course.
A highly recommended recording for guitar players, guitar lovers and Chinese music fans alike.
One of the best solo guitar albums I have ever heard.......2006-10-06
One of the most original CDs I've ever heard. This CD is full of incredible music. Yang XueFei plays with sensitivity, creativity and passion.
When I played this CD for my guitar teacher, he commented that it was rare for him not to have heard at least one piece on any particular classical guitar CD, yet all these pieces were new to him. Carlo Domeniconi (who wrote the masterpiece "Koyunbaba") has composed an outstanding suite based on the I Ching. The 3 pieces by Stephen Goss, which are based on Asian films, are themselves cinematic: "The Blue Kite" is a work of minimalist beauty. There are many other talented composers lending their gifts to this CD. Most of the selections are either composed for Yang Xuefei or are arrangements by her. All are inspired by Chinese culture and music. My favorite piece is "Long Outstretched Pier with its Shadow" (by Dietmar Ungerrank); it is elegantly written and the execution is sensual and rich.
Yang XueFei's technical agility, especially the right hand, (as in "Yi Dance") goes beyond that of her contemporaries. As impressive as this is, the passion she imbues into each work is what connects her to the songs and ultimately to the audience. Technique is there to help her express what is inside of her. It is as if the guitar is her lover. This just isn't a great guitar album; it is a great album period. Its emotional complexity deepens with each listening. Buy it!
I've also purchased "Romance de Amor" which is extremely good as well (listen to her version of "Requerdos de la Alhambra" as compared to one of her heroes, John Williams on "The Guitarist"), but "Si Ji" is totally unique. Don't miss it.
As an aside, If you do end up buying and enjoying this CD, you might listen to Lily Afshar. The influence of her Persian heritage is similar in effect to "Si Ji" by Yang XueFei. Both artists have breathed life into the modern repertoire of guitar music.
Virtuoso playing and an unusual repetoire.......2005-10-26
I am a classical guitar student, and an over-the-top consumer. So I have a lot (many dozens) of classical guitar CDs. They are for the most part quite good, but they tend to blend. I might be able to distinguish Tennant's Rodrigo or Barrueco's Scarlatti, but too many guitarists play an awful lot of the same repetoire, and they play it quite similarly.
This CD is quite different. The pieces are all Asian in flavor and by composers I had never heard of. And they are quite beautiful. Ms. Yang appears to be quite young, so this could be the start of a long and interesting career. But at least one of the pieces was written for her, so she has already apparently developed a solid reputation.

“...International award winning composer, Fahir Atakoglu is a much-esteemed composerand pianist in Europe and Turkey, in the fields of large symphonic works and film music. His works have also been performed in various music festivals in Europe and across The United States to much acclaim. This CD called “IF” marks an interesting departure for him. Instead of a ninety piece orchestra, his music here is performed by only three musicians, and what a fabulous trio it is! Fahir’s playing and his harmonic and original rhythmic sense in his compositions, electrifies the musical atmosphere throughout. The legendary bassist Anthony Jackson is superb as always, so is drum virtuoso, Grammy winner Horacio ‘El Negro’ Hernandez. Saxophonist Donny McCaslin plays beautifully on two numbers. The drumming that is Horacio’s “own”, together Anthony’s tone that has been his signature for nearly two decades, and the groups unique grooves of Turkish melodic and rhythmic motifs, makes this album a one of a kind collectors item, a must have…” ARIF MARDIN Producer, Composer, Arranger. Your ears and your heart will appreciate this album.......2005-08-24
What an amazing group of musicians!!! Fahir Atakoglu is a well-known musician in Europe, it was time for him to conquer the US music markets. This is one of those albums, you know, the rare ones that you keep playing for years and years. These musicians are simply genious people, and they know how to show this by touching your heart. Stop reading these comments and go and buy this album immediately. If you are like me, I know you will appreciate it.

Having been recording in Europe & Turkey for over 20 years, Fahir is finally recording in the USA. Jackson and Hernadez are serious players, and have given Fahir the good exposure he deserves. Fahir's music has been a part of our lives, souls and dreams for years. Believe it or not, I was surprised to hear Fahir's music as the opening act at a wedding in Medellin, Colombia this August. This guy is an incredible talent. His music has an international appeal with the ability to reach people's hearts. Way to go Fahir!
Excellent !.......2005-08-20
...Wow!!! ; I have never heard this guy before but he sure can play his piano!!His melodies are amazing...His Turkish side really shows in the 3rd track Anadoluo. Fahir's comping on the left hand ,the pulse is so very very much in sync with the Drummer!that it gives listener an overwhelming pleasure and with Anthony Jackson the poly-rithm in all of the compositions are sooo original that I praise this album .. a very BIG AWESOME!!!
I believe pianists, bass players and drummers can "LEARN" a lot from this album!!
I am looking forward to hearing them live ;
you got a FAN!!
not too sure yet..........2005-07-21
...what to make of this record.
I just can't help it,but I feel that this album does not really breathe as well as it could.A lot of clustered left hand voicings from the piano may well be a contributing factor. That the rhythm playing feelsa little hectic (to me anyhow)is another point. And although there is a lot of soloing in the piano,as well as it may be executed,i feel that there is a lack of direction.as a bottom line i got to say, that the pianoplaying really does not touch me all that much.
The rhythm-section however really helps. The bass especially is highly dynamic. The use of the expression pedal much complements the overall picture. At times however gem-like moments in the bass department(of which there are MANY) are a little quiet against the piano.Mind you ,this is a PIANO TRIO record. As to the drums; i really enjoy what is going on there too.apropriately busy.
On the whole;i like this record, although I doubt it will become a favourite,as I am not sure the compositions are of the kind that makes me want to keep on listening through the whole album. One or two pieces at a time, yes, but perhaps not the whole cd.They do not make me alert in a way that some others do,as i miss a sense of clarity and concept(having said that,i have not spent all that much time with the cd as yet-affore mentioned reasons-)-this is of course mostly a taste issue. For rhythm section enthusiasts, and especially basspeople, this will be a very interesting disc to listen to.

Acoustic stringed instrument lovers, take note!.......2005-10-20
My first introduction to Al Petteway and Amy White was the "acoustic Journey" album that I received by donating to National Public Radio. As an acoustic guitarist myself, I really appreciated the great talent and wonderful arrangements. Curious, I checked Amazon.com for more of their music and was attracted to "Land of the Sky" which focused more on southern Appalachian folk music, albeit in a more stylized form. Still, I found it very soothing and at times, emotional, especially the intrumental version of "Shady Grove". I also bought the "Holiday Sampler" because it's a wonderful alternative to the traditional music-box albums I normally play at Christmas time. I'd give it three thumbs up if I had them!
Both original and traditional compositions of mountain melodies .......2005-08-07
When the Scots, Irish, Welch, and English settlers populated the mountain valleys, hills, and mountains of Southern Appalachia, they brought their music with them as an integral part of their culture. In Land Of The Sky, Al Petteway and Amy White deftly collaborate to memorably perform within that Southern Appalachian music tradition and heritage for the benefit and delight of a new generation of listeners with recorded performances that include both original and traditional compositions of mountain melodies played on acoustic guitars, the mandolin, the Celtic harp, the banjo, fiddles, the Irish Bouzouki, Fretless Bass, percussion, and vocals. Entertaining listening with a total running time of 53:06, the fourteen pieces comprising this outstanding and recommended CD for personal, music department, and community library New Age & Contemporary Folk Music collections include Black Bear's Picnic (4:16); Shady Grove (4:39); Across the Blue Mountains (4:11); Bobcat in the Brambles (3:03); Sunny Day (3:08); Pretty Polly (4:00); A Walk in the Woods (4:20); Western Highlands (3:30); Wayfaring Stranger (4:33); The Cuckoo (2:42); Swannanoa (4:44); Ryan's Rambles (4:05); Trillium Waltz (2:33); and the title piece, Land of the Sky (2:58).
A fan from Arlington, VA........2005-05-05
While I do not consider myself an expert in acoustic guitar music, I have over the years collected and listened to a lot of such music. Like most everyone, I know what I like, and I like the music of Al Petteway and Amy White a great deal.
This CD may be their best. It is musically rich and as all are of their CDs, it is innovative. A good example of that is their version of the standard folk song, "Pretty Polly".
There is not a bad cut on the CD, and like other great artists, the CD's theme of an Appalachian journey not only holds together, it works quite well. I have listened to this CD over and over and find something new every time. This is one to buy and keep.
