When he was growing up, Andrea Bocelli recalls finding inspiration in a favorite recording of sacred music performed by tenor legend Franco Corelli. Bocelli--who in the meantime has come to inspire millions of fiercely loyal fans himself--returns to the genre as the guiding theme of Sacred Arias. These performances are filled with the singer's phenomenally well-known vocal signature: his flair for long, sweetly floating high notes and the gentle sense of cadence he brings to a melody. It's a mistake to compartmentalize Bocelli into a singer of "operatic" versus "popular" styles: in truth his approach is at heart the same. Lack of color and control in his phrasing remains a drawback, but the emotional empathy Bocelli evokes is never in doubt. The arias collected here sample some of the most famous devotional pieces: Schubert's "Ave Maria" and Mozart's transporting "Ave Verum," as well as an arrangement of "Silent Night" in which Bocelli tries out his English. There's also a decidedly odd choice of bedfellows for a program of "sacred" music, such as a song from Wagner's Wesendonck Lieder (whose "angel" is the object of an overpoweringly erotic attraction) and Handel's figurative ode to a tree, "Ombra mai fu." Still, Bocelli sings with an unfeigned directness that is sure to expand his already enormous following even further. This new special edition includes two bonus tracks on a CD enhanced with a picture gallery as well as a full-length DVD of Bocelli in concert filmed at the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome. --Thomas May

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A spiritual experience.......2003-11-27

The DVD is the full 77 minute concert with two featurettes previously released alone. The CD is the full 72 minute concert previously released alone, except that two bonus tracks have been added. The audio quality of each one is quite good. (If you have a Dolby Digital stereo, then you must go into the setup menu on the DVD to select Dolby Digital sound. The default music track is the stereo 2.0 sound.) The video quality of the DVD is astonishing.

The DVD gives the feeling that you are in the church with the other worshippers. It literally sends chills up and down my spine. I highly recommend this CD/DVD combination Special Edition while it is still available.

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoying The Pleasures of K. Battle & C. Parkening.......2007-05-06

Whether you are very familiar with these two artists or have never heard either one, you will delight in this musical collaboration. Only a guitarist of Christopher Parkening's stature could be the ideal accompaniment to the perfection of Kathleen Battle's voice. The music ranges from selections by John Dowland to American spirituals, Bach/Gounod, Villa-Lobos, Granados and some Spanish folk songs. The result is a coherent, soothing and utterly delightful listening experience. You will revisit this album often, and always be glad that you have it. For fans of Kathleen Battle and Christopher Parkening, I think it is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Great blending of the talents of two top-notch artists in their respective fields. Parkening on the guitar and Battle singing........2006-01-31

We always enjoyed seeing and hearing Battle in concerts, usually on the television and Parkening has been a favorite guitarist. To listen to these two fine artists in concert is a real treat.

4 out of 5 stars Superb technique, emotionally flat, but enjoyable even so........2005-05-25

I can't imagine these songs being performed with any greater technical brilliance than they are by Parkening and Battle on this CD. Both are virtuosos, him in the guitar, her the voice. Their skill is particularly apparent in the Dowland songs, the "Ave Maria", and the Bachianas brasileiras no. 5 (for me, the high point of the recording), which are all in a formal style well suited to the talents of the performers.

I compare the Brazilian songs to the version recorded by Salli Terri with Laurindo Almeida in the late '50's on "Duets with Spanish Guitar", which I have listened to repeatedly since I first heard it in 1959. Battle's phrasing, enunciation, and vocal skill are far superior to Terri's, but Terri brought a level of emotion to her singing that Battle seems to lack. Where Battle's perfection enhances her superb performances of the Dowland and Villa-Lobos pieces, it seems to detract from her performance of the Brazilian folk pieces.

I find this to be true again in the spirituals - vocal perfection and control detracting from the "soul" required to bring out the "spiritual" feeling. Imagine these same pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson or Aretha Franklin and you'll understand my point.

Parkening's performance has the same quality - technical virtuosity, especially noticeable in his lute-like technique in the Dowland solo - but lacking in emotional depth.

The classical selections are highly recommended, the folk pieces a bit disappointing, but overall an enjoyable recording.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVOURITES.......2004-03-19

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BATTLE ALBUMS, HER SWEET VOICE IS ACCOMPAINED BY THE GUITAR VIRTUOSO CHRISTOPHER PARKENING, TOGETHER CREATE A TENDER, DELIGHTFUL & BEAUTIFUL LISTENING EXPERIENCE. BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS N- 5 HAS IT`S BEST PERFORMANCE IN THIS CD.

3 out of 5 stars Fans will be delighted!.......2003-08-25

Fans, maybe, but I must say I'm not a huge fan of Kathleen Battle or opera or songs in different languages, either. My mom is, though. And through her I have heard Kathleen's best. And her very best (if you ask me) is one of the tracks ON THIS CD titled "Ain't that good news," even though it should be called "Ain'ta dat good news," since that is how its sung. It is a really good song (ask anybody) with a little surprise high-note at the end. If I were you I would (if not buy this CD right here and now) then go to [a book store] and see if their computers will let you hear "Ain't that good news" because that song is great.

5 out of 5 stars Another highlight in the Adagio series.......2002-05-30

Many of the pieces of music on this disc are masterpieces and all are played to perfection.Barber's Adagio appears twice:in orchestral and choral versions, and the Agnus Dei choral is given loving treatment by the Robert Shaw festival singers. The familiar but never tiring Shaker variations of Copland and the exquisite Lullabye for strings of Gershwin are two quintessential slices of Americana performed by the Cincinnati Pops under Eric Kunzel. The most beautiful work of the collection may be the Anhran from flute concerto by Christopher Rouse. This little piece may find its way on many recordings in the coming years. With all around excellent performances and gorgeous sound this disc is definitely a keeper.

    5 out of 5 stars A collection of masterpieces.......2001-08-28

This Telarc CD is a compilation of selections from a dozen different albums. It features slow movements by such greats as Barber, Copland and Gershwin and includes beautiful works by lesser known composers. The album is stylistically varied but is uniformly beautiful, meditative and relaxing. I particularly enjoyed Thomas Canning's "Variations on a Hymn by Justin Morgan". However, I purchased this CD for the final piece, Barber's "Agnus Dei". This particular performance by the Robert Shaw Festival Singers is transcendental. Each time I listen to it, I feel like I've left the here and now and am somewhere that it better and very beautiful. I have other recordings of Agnus Dei that are nice, but seem kind of stiff in comparison to this one. This CD comes with my highest recommendations.

5 out of 5 stars Will transport you..........2000-07-10

Adagios may be slower pieces, but this CD is definitely not simple background music. The tenderness of the Gershwin "Lullaby" and Barber's haunting "Adagio" demand your attention. This is music that soars and takes the listener along.

    5 out of 5 stars Contemplative Bliss.......2000-04-22

I bought this disk to get Barber's Adagio for Strings. The entire disk is a contemplatively blissful experience. I don't want to meet the person for whom the "Agnus Dei" based on Barber's Adagio doesn't open the cosmos. I'm online ordering six more copies for my wife to give to friends.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful compelation of classical music!.......2000-03-14

I am playing the Adagio for Strings by Barber in my orchestra and it is an absolutely moving piece. I watch the film Platoon now every weekend just because the Barber is so amazing to listen to. The Agnus Dei is great too and so are all the other pieces. A fantastic CD that is so much more than a few pieces for the orchestra.

    5 out of 5 stars Deceptively Sinful.......2001-10-15

Ravel's Daphnis & Chloe is a masterpiece of orchestration. It is pure magic as it builds from etherial nothings layering in the choir and then bursting into orgiastic splendor in the opening minutes. The Atlanta Symphony & Chorus are perfectly matched and recorded with incredible depth. The sound feels intensly lush and lost in its meandering score. The dynamics on this disc will bowl you over. A great Ravel disc if you want a clean departure from Bolero.

5 out of 5 stars Watts Still Owns the Saint-Saëns.......2006-11-18

André Watts remains one of the concert stage favorites since his auspicious debut at age 16, now some 40 odd years ago. He still commands the respect of the critics and the adoration of the audience, and most importantly he still continues to grow into the works he has elected to keep in his standard repertoire.

This recording made in 1995 with Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra remains one of the most satisfying performances of the Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No.2 in G minor Opus 22 on record. Yes, the performance of the more popular Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 receives a fine reading here, but it is the Saint-Saëns that makes the recording one that belongs in everyone's library. At a recent performance of this work with the Los Angeles Philharmonic under guest conductor Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos the venerable Watts proved that if anything he is more at home with this concerto than ever. His nimble fingers fly over the keyboard in the many rapid passages at speeds that would be daunting to other artists (his lip action also dazzles audiences with his trance-like state during live performance!). Yet he finds the haunting melodies and caresses them with more definition than is usually heard.

Watts continues to grow as a performer and an artist, seemingly more involved in the depth of the works as the years pass. And that is the sign of the great ones. This recording is a fine one and deserves attention. Grady Harp, November 06

4 out of 5 stars New Shine on Old War-Horses.......2004-01-20

I have not been a particular advocate of André Watts; I've heard him bang about in live concert too many times. And I've even heard him play the Tchaik 1 in concert and was not particularly impressed. But earlier today I heard this performance of the First Concerto on our local NPR station, having tuned in at literally bar 5 (perfect timing!) and, not knowing who it was, I listened. And listened. And listened. And kept thinking, who is this? This is good! And even more I was thinking that the aural stage was perfectly managed, with the piano sound seeming to come OUT of the orchestra rather than set way in front. Further, I could hear orchestral detail (e.g., like those two-flute arpeggios just before the final onrush of the first movement) that are almost never heard on recording. So, fool that I am, I sat in my car until the whole thing was over, really curious to find out who the performers were. I was shocked (and uneasy about my own bias) to learn that it was André Watts, with Yoel Levi conducting the Atlanta Symphony. A recording from ten years ago. I was even more dismayed to remember, once I got home, that I OWN this recording--but I couldn't ever remember listening to it, frankly--and I found it, removed the shrink-wrap (sure enough, I HAD never listened to it) and sat down for a complete run through.

My initial impression lasted. Yes, there were some smudges in the last movement (as Watts sometimes does, alas) and some brief odd blurring of the overall sound, also in the last movement, but myt general assessment from the radio lasted.

And then I listened to the Saint-Saëns Second Concerto and, again, I had a very positive impression. No, Watts doesn't make the most of the leggierissimo aspects of the third movement, but overall it's a very creditable performance and he conveys convincingly the declamatory aspects of the piece. What Levi and his Atlantans do is electrifying in both pieces. (I even initially wondered, though I assume these concerti are not really part of his repertoire, that it could possibly be Pierre Boulez conducting because of the care taken with instrumental detail.) Some credit, of course, has to go to the recording engineers; Telarc has long been noted for its sterling sound.

So, the bottom line is that these are valuable recordings of both of these warhorses, and particularly if one wants a more natural sound--no harsh spotlight on the piano--and crystal clear orchestral sound.

But I do go on. This is an excellent release in spite of my biases.

    Scott Morrison

5 out of 5 stars Very impressive performance.......2002-09-23

The version of Tchaikovski's first piano concerto featured on this Telarc disc is good enough, but this recording's main attraction is undoubtedly André Watts' fantastic performance of the Saint-Saëns second piano concerto, which is at least as good as any version that I've heard, and probably better than most. The monumental, cosmic first movement comes through very strongly here; he's no less impressive with the offbeat rhythms of the second movement, and the spectacular presto is perfectly executed. One should not forget to give Yoel Levi and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra some well-derserved credit: in other recordings of this piece, the soloist and orchestra don't seem to be quite on the same page, but there's no such problem here. I'd be curious to hear Watts perform the four other Saint-Saëns piano concertos.

5 out of 5 stars Truly World Class Pianist.......2002-01-25

Andre Watts is one of my favorite pianists. I've heard him both live and on disc, and I must say he is truly a world class pianist. This is one of my favorites, especially for the intensely passionate and elegant interpretation of the Saint-Saens concerto of which there is none better out on market. Watts' has so much sensitivity toward the instrument and amazing versatility. He captures the energy of the Tchaikovsky and the grace of the Saint-Saens concertos perfectly. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Power.......2001-08-03

I first heard this recording when public radio played Saint-Saens' 2nd. I ordered the album that day. Andre Watts is an absolutely fantastic pianist, channeling incredible energy through the music. Although I enjoy the Tchaikovsky, especially the final movement, his playing of the Saint-Saens is utterly incredible. From the first to the last notes, it is one of the most captivating recordings. Other recordings of the concerto just do not measure up to the tension and beauty he instills in it. A must have!

4 out of 5 stars buy this for the choral adagio (Agnus Dei ).......2007-05-22

A strong CD offering. The choral version of adagio for
strings is by far the highlight. There are some other fine
tracks as well. The audio quality is fine, giving a good
value for my 10 bucks. Leonard Slatkin, is in his usual
fine form here, and gives an excellent performance of the
original adagio for strings. All the other tracks
are good as well. There is some very powerful music here.
I'm glad I bought this disc.

Since I already own several copies of Barber's Adagio.
I bought this for the choral version which in itself
    was worth the purchase.

If you have only a casual interest in Classical Music,
you will almost certainly love the Adagio and Angnus Dei,
and you will at the very least find the other tracks interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars Mahler's kaleidoscopic vision.......2007-03-26

This is maybe the most beautifully played and recorded (at least in this stereo CD format) Mahler 4 I have ever heard. From the high to low strings, through all of the woodwinds and brass, every instrumental voice and timbre registers as clear as can be, and within a wonderfully natural, nicely blended sound picture. In this recording, Mahler's Fourth Symphony really comes out as the stunning kaleidoscopic vision that it is.
But besides beauty of playing (compare for example Symphony 2 in C Minor: Resurrection, but I think this Fourth is an even greater achievement), the playing is replete with character, and the music has real power when needed, and a real 'spring in its step' from beginning to end. Part II In gemachlicher Bewegung is full of wonderful spine-tingling moments, also (and especially) because the balances between the instruments are so wonderfully clear. The Part III Ruhevoll ('tranquil') is buoyantly and freshly played, full of peaceful anticipation - not as 'mysterious' as some other recordings - and the 'frolicking' parts looking forward to the final song are full of youthful energy, just like the final song of Part IV, sehr behaglich. In the final song, Frederica von stade is recorded rather forwardly, and one has to like this, but I personally do, so I don't mind, especially when one can fully revel in the beauty of her wonderful timbre and characterization. The Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen are a wonderful 'bonus', and reason alone to buy this album, maybe, even if this performance does IMHO not surpass her excellent 1978 recording with Andrew Davis (Mahler: Symphony No.4; Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen).
This Mahler 4 can stand with the very best, IMHO. Completely beguiling from beginning to end. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Autumnal style Mahler beautifully played, superb recording.......2006-11-25

Most Mahler collectors and enthusiasts have at least a few recordings of each symphony and most likely several of their very favorite Mahler symphony. This recording, so beautiful, clear, so lacking in digital harshness, such detail and dynamic range emerge - that it can fit into any Mahler collection. The ASO give suave, well defined tone, that allows us to hear the full score. While Levi conducts without a neurotic Bernstein character, nor the frenetic "greased pig" style of Karajan, this is world class playing beautifully captured. Tempi are just right. Comparatively, I would opine that this is Levis' best Mahler effort. Von Stade sings beautifully and the Wayfarer songs are most welcome.

    5 out of 5 stars Just Right........2002-03-30

This is a great example of a Mahler symphony for those who don't like Mahler. It is brisk, bright and absolutely beautiful. This is a great fall/winter chill-in-the-air-type piece. The scope is scenic and sweeping rather like Sibelius but is given over to an intimate orchestration as deftly masterful as Strauss. If Eine Alpensinfonie describes the physical determination and deserved accomplishment of climbing a formidible mountain, then surely Mahler's fourth could be music for taking the ski-lift. The object is not conquering the majesty of nature, but just to relax and observe its innate beauty. The tunes are grand and escalate with such joy that it is easy to forget you are not listening to a tone poem. Frederica Von Stade lends her flawless voice to both the symphony and the similarly timbred companion piece, Songs of a Wayfarer. She is icing on an already well-frosted cake. The sound quality of this recording is terrific and the blend with Frederica is impeccable. This is a rare recording of great beauty guaranteed to lift your spirits.

    5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable Mahler!.......2000-08-19

The first Mahler that I ever heard was the Szell/Cleveland Orchestra 4th with Judith Raskin on Columbia back in the mid-60's. Though I have not heard that recording in more than 30 years, I've never forgotton the magical, lyrical sound that Szell produced on that LP. But Levi's recording of the 4th is equal to or greater that Szell's version. Levi's recording is almost flawless. I also liked the inclusion of the Wayfarer songs at the end. They are thematically connected with this symphony, and share the same youthful perspective. If you can buy only one recording of Mahler's 4th, let it be this one.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best........2000-02-19

Yoel Levi has a true artistic achievement here. His other Mahler was a mixed bag; the fifth was fairly dull, the sixth was missing the exposition repeat, and the seventh was inconsistent. This, however, is altogether wonderful. Never have I heard the balanced sound, beautiful solos, and coherency of interpretation found in this recording. This version certainly equals and possibly excels both Bernstein's and Kubelik's. I have yet to hear Rattle's version, but it doesn't get much better than this, folks.

5 out of 5 stars Itzhak Perlman at His Best.......2006-07-19

Violinist Itzhak Perlman has used his formidable talent in expressing the pathos and joy of traditional Yiddish tunes and the result brings the listener to both tears of sadness and tears of delight. Mr. Perlman's deep empathy with the Jewish soul is manifested in every note, every nuanced phrase of his performance. A wonderful listening experience for every "ehrlicher yid" - and those who appreciate the history of a people portrayed in sound.

5 out of 5 stars Fate is our mate in life.......2005-11-28

Those music pieces are definitely Jewish and yet they are at the crossroads of bohemian, gypsy and yiddish styles and they make the violin cry in beauty and weep in enthusiasm. The tears of the bow are dancing and sprinkling all over the place and our smiles are enjoying this voice of paradise on earth some spring Sunday afternoon . And yet deep deep under we can hear and feel some vague and yet perfectly distinct menace surging from the night and looming high over the unconscious people who ignore that danger is in the back of every minute and should be at the back of every mind. And suddenly the racing notes accelerate their flight across the air and the sky as if a whole hive of aggressive wasps were arriving and charging. Get lost, get hidden away from the landing of the charging cavalry of danger, any danger : be ready for it, never forget it may come at any time. This music is the voice of the immense cosmic void that fills our minds when we forget life is a struggle against death. It reminds us of our duty to remember that the future cannot be forgotten as if it did not exist. The future is already here, in our back and pushing us to the days to come and the years that will arrive soon, too soon probably for us to be able to change anything. There is a deep sense of fatality in this music : no matter what may happen, we will live it through, and in a way or another survive it. No need to foresee danger it would not help us to face it.

    4 out of 5 stars Good music.......2007-04-07

First of all I am not jewish, nor have I had any prior experiences with or knowledge of jewish music.
With that said, I have really enjoyed this album especially the song "As the rabbi (can't remember the name) becomes so very merry".
