Album Description
A friend of the legendary composer and instrument builder Harry Partch in the 1960s, Phillip Arnautoff is building new versions of some of Partchs unusual instruments and creating new music for them. Soliloquy is a long solo piece for Harmonic Canon, a plucked zither tuned in an exotic just intonation scale. The piece is heard on two levels; the long melodies that Arnautoff plucks on the instrument and the shimmering halo of overtones that gradually build up above these notes. Although it has roots in the music of Harry Partch, Soliloquy is equally redolent of the piano music of La Monte Young and Middle Eastern music for plucked instruments.
