Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30

Every concerto/piece for flute and orchestra presented here can stand as the very pinnacle of performance and interpretation. Rampal and friends play with all the logic and song of the French school. I would like to commend the Mozart G Major concerto in particular, as Rampal's is the best performance I know (I've heard a better one, but that was on internet radio and I wasn't able to find out who performed it - I'm still searching). I have heard 10 other G Majors, all by worthy soloists with the likes of the VPO or LSO accompanying, and none can outdo Rampal's passionate yet low-key style with the absolutely glorious Israel Philharmonic (you might never have heard them - and you'll wonder why!) with a reasonably alert Zubin Mehta at the helm. The balance is wonderful, with the delicate middle string parts coming through clearly (shame on you, DG and Decca). If only Karl Boehm had been around to wave the stick for these Mozart recordings (The D Major and C Major here are also magnifcent, by the way), this would likely be hands-down the only set of Mozart concertos you'll ever need. Nevertheless, they are pretty darn close.

Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"

5 out of 5 stars Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17

The late Jean-Pierre Rampal, whom I had the pleasure to meet and chat with in the 1980's, is a "triple threat" man, in analogy to the football term. Some fine players impress with their technique. I am swept along by Rampal's renditions in a way that makes me forget all about technique - except for miraculous nuances every now and then that remind me that Rampal recreates every work with a creative, perceptive mind. For example, in Vivaldi's "Goldfinch" concerto Rampal, as almost afterthoughts, puts in exquisite little embellishments that literally makes a little bird come to life. It's a miraculous sound. Too bad Antonio Vivaldi couldn't have heard it.

Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.

Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.

Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.

Another installment in Philips's Set Your Life to Music series (which has included Mozart for Your Mind, Baroque at Bathtime, and Rachmaninoff for Romance, among others), Vivaldi for Valentines is loosely built around the aura of romance that Venice continues to evoke. Vivaldi captured it for all time in his music, inspired by the often melancholy beauty of his native city, one that has been known through the ages as La Serenissima. Along with such ultrafamiliar pieces as the "Winter" largo movement from The Four Seasons (in which the violin sighs a rapturous melody against sounds imitating a crackling, cozy fire) and the Largo of the Guitar Concerto in D--Vivaldi's slow movements, with all their gentle dreaminess, being given the limelight in this compilation--are many gems you've likely not heard before. The list of performers and approaches is too expansive even to mention but predominantly features performances by I Musici. It's hard to believe that Vivaldi's music, having sunk into oblivion, resurfaced again only a few decades ago. This is a pleasant compilation that makes a perfect entrée if you'd like to learn more about classical music--and Vivaldi in particular--than The Four Season. And, as for setting a romantic mood, this will give your mojo all the help it needs. --Thomas May

5 out of 5 stars More of Vivaldi's great music........2001-08-24

When it comes to Vivaldi's works, the majority of people usually tend to associate him solely with composing the Four Seasons. However, this particular cd will introduce classical music lovers to other music that he composed for various stringed instruments, including the violin and cello. It does include a section from Winter of the Four Seasons, but the rest is other music that some may not be too familiar with. For a low price, you'll be getting a great selection of music.

5 out of 5 stars Just great!.......2000-07-10

I don't really know a lot about classical music even though I listen to a lot of it. All I can say is that every piece on this collection evokes a tremendous amount of peace and happy emotion. I listen to it in my office, and that in combination with my new fountain.... better than Prozac. My favorite piece is "Concerto for Guitar in D major: Largo" (sample #2 above). Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Heard "Four Seasons"? Want more? GET THIS!.......1999-03-16

Almost everyone knows Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". If you love that gorgeous piece of music, than I say your next purchase should be this! It is a gorgeous collecton of string quartets along with flutes and very impressive classical guitar. I put it on whenever I need to be taken away from this world, or when I need some artistic inspiration.

    Vivaldi ROCKS ! ! ! !
Excellent selection of his music and as usual flawlessly performed by the english consort.

4 out of 5 stars A Little More Vivaldi Please.......2003-12-28

This budget-priced, slim paper-sleeved box set of various Vivaldi Concertos on the DG/Archiv label is quite excellent. Trevor Pinnock, directing from the harpsichord and organ, leads the English Concert (an all-star cast including Roy Goodman and Simon Standage, both of whom have graduated to the podium in recent years) in digital recordings from the late 80s. Since the track information is not abundantly clear above, allow me to mention that the first two discs of this set feature various Concertos, discs 3 & 4 contain the complete "L'estro amonico" op. 3, and CD5 six Flute Concertos op. 10. While I have never been a big fan of period-instrument recordings, there is nothing I can complain about here. The performances are warm, spirited, and thoroughly engaging, and certainly not academic. In fact, my only complaint is that there is not more to listen to. I popped this set in my 5-disc changer over the Holidays, and was disappointed to find it end so soon, being that four of the five CDs log in at the mid-50 minute mark and one only at a whopping 45:08. By my calculations, there is easily room for an additional two hours of material here! Alas, it is the only problem with an otherwise stellar set.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent and Delightful.......2006-06-17

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741): Flute Concertos RV 427, 438, 440, 533 (for two flutes), 428 (“Il Gardellino”), 436 and 429. Janet See, Stephen Schultz, baroque flutes.
Recorder Concertos RV 433 (La Tempesta di Mare”), 441, 443, 104 (“La Notte”, original recorder version), 434, 444, 435. Marion Verbruggen, recorders; Dennis Godburn, bassoon. The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, San Francisco, conducted by Nicholas McGegan.
Recorded March, 1987, at Lone Mountain College Chapel, San Francisco (flute concertos) and September, 1990, at Skywalker Sound, Nicasio, California (recorder concertos).
Harmonia Mundi HMX 2907340.41 (reissue of HMU 905193 and HMU 907040. Total time: 2 hrs 0’23”.

This is what I wrote about the original issue of the flute concertos:
I can only confirm what others before me have written: This must surely be one of the finest Vivaldi recordings of all time! Both the playing and the recording technique (it sounds suspiciously as though Harmonia Mundi was still using analogue equipment in 1987 because there is some slight "pre-echoing" to be heard) are absolutely magnificent. In particular, Janet See's delightful and highly musical formation of the flute solo lines on her mellow, woody baroque instrument is a treat for the ears, but it shouldn't prevent one from enjoying the full-blooded, energetic orchestral sound that Nicholas McGegan coaxes from his West Coast original instrument orchestra as though this music had been written specially for them. Incidentally, all the pieces here were written by Vivaldi with the transverse flute in mind, and I found it particularly pleasant to hear them played as they were intended on not on some form of recorder .(The "birdsong" Gardellino concerto does actually exist in another version for recorder.) Full marks to all involved here: I am writing 19 years after the recording was made, but I have yet to discover a disc of this material that could outdo the San Francisco offering.

As for the recorder concertos, again I feel that there is plenty of room for congratulations. Marion Verbruggen plays as delightfully and assuredly as anyone could ask, and the West Coast original instrument ensemble (8 violins, 2 violas, 2 celli, double bass, bassoon, archlute, harpsichord and chamber organ) sounds, under the able leadership of Nicholas McGegan, the equal of any European early music orchestra. Special praise for the decision to vary the recorders used: only two of the seven concerti are played on a sopranino, and these are kept well away from one another – thus avoiding the rather tiresome effect that this high-pitched instrument can have when used too frequently. In this respect there must surely also be praise for engineer Anthony Faulkner, who has got the balance absolutely right: No overly close-up recorder here, but rather a natural, easy-on-the-ear sound that seems to reflect ideally the positioning of the musicians while playing and avoids the “nervousness” of, for example, Peter Holman’s Vivaldi recorder issue for Hyperion. And of course, as one has come to expect with McGegan, the continuo is wonderful – not only his own harpsichord, but also the chamber organ played by John Butt (listen in especially to the last concerto on the disc, RV 435; the organ provides some delightful coloring!). As this set is now available at a bargain price, fans of McGegan and of Vivaldi should not hesitate. And as all the concertos on these two discs are extremely tuneful and popular (i. e. very easy to follow), this is also a recommendation for schoolteachers and others who want to play Vivaldi to students or friends and get them interested!

5 out of 5 stars SEASONS OF THE HEART.......2001-02-24

This is as intimate a recording of The Four Seasons as you will ever likely come across, due entirely to the complete immersion of the phenomenal Connecticut Early Music Festival Ensemble into the spirit and essence of Vivaldi, under the directorship of ageless maestro, Igor Kipnis.

With each of the eight Connecticut Ensemble members taking his or her part--- three violins, viola, cello, bass, theorbo/archlute/guitar, and harpsichord--- Vivaldi's concerti Op. 8, No.'s 1-4 become chamber-like, wistful, utterly personal. And contrary to what we might presume, even with its bare bones showing, this Four Seasons becomes yet more profound. Textures hidden beneath typical orchestral forces, embellishments subdued or repressed entirely, or melodic lines no longer articulated (or too well integrated to hear), have a sudden clarity, variety and emotional impact that is startling and completely convincing--- as well as being thoroughly thrilling.

The keen scholarship of Kipnis is telling at every turn, as in the use of Richard Stone's theorbo, archlute or baroque guitar interspersed throughout; or Eli Potash's self-built and wonderfully rich and baroquely gruff bass, tuned in fifths; or Kipnis' own harpsichord contribution, a marvel in itself, and particularly rewarding (as in the Adagio of "Autumn")--- yes! we do actually get to HEAR the harpsichord! (At long last.)

Lead violinist Jorg-Michael Schwarz is to be commended for his beautiful tone, grace and musical emapthy; but, then, it would be a disservice not to commend every member of the Connecticut Ensemble for fabulously rich and inspiring craftsmanship, and for allowing us the treasures manifest in their playing.

Also on the CD is the Flute Concerto in D, Op. 10, No. 3 ("The Goldfinch"), RV 428, here played rapturously by John Slocum on a mid-18th century one-keyed boxwood flute. Superb!

To round things out, we have a concerto (listed as RV 546), probably for violin and cello, reconstructed brilliantly, and convincingly, by Kipnis as a three movement Harpsichord Concerto (RV 78) in A.

Absolutely first-rate sound: warm, comfortable, inviting, detail-rich. Excellent liner notes, too, by Kipnis.

      [Running time: 62:15]

      5 out of 5 stars Crystal Clarity.......2000-04-12

Like all of Chesky's recordings I've listened to, this one is awesome. This is the best recording of Vivaldi I've heard. The range is phenomenal. Bass is rich and full, highs are crisp, and the resolution is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars The Red Priest how he should be played.......2000-12-03

I was given this CD many years ago, and to this day it has remained my favourite. Vivaldi's beautiful simplistic melodies in the largo movements and awe-inspiring scalar variations make his music a delight to listen to. Simon Standage's energetic performance of the famous allegro from spring, and the beautifully ornamented largo from the same concerto are a terrific opening. His amazing precision while playing the extremely difficult tempo impestuoso dell'estade (presto from summer), and the charming third movement from autumn are all played as I have never heard before. Perhaps the best of all is the largo from winter, which is played so beautifully, with amazing accuracy on the trills, and few ornaments to keep it sweetly simplistic are all true signs of genius.

The flute concerto is a great choice to contrast the preceeding trumpet concerto's strength with the delicacy of a bird - a bullfinch if you please. Not to confuse delicacy with weakness, however. This piece is strong in its own right, within the arpeggios in the first movement and the mournful calling in the second are very powerful, but fightly and bird-like. The tone quality of the flautist, and the composer's own ability to mimic nature with a musical instrument make this piece a pleasure to listen to.

The mandolin and lute concerti are beautiful as well, and they show Vivaldi's versatility on all instruments perfectly. They sound as if they are written by a guitarist, not a violin virtuoso. Listening to this you feel as if you were being serenaded by a Venetian gondelier. The largos are soothing and relaxing, and the allegros are bright and energetic.

This recording does the Red Priest the full justice he deserves. His tremendous talent comes through, and complimented by the talent of the performers make this CD a worthy addition to anyone's collection, and I would highly reccomend you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid selection, great performances.......2000-05-29

An excellent CD. Under the baton of Trevor Pinnock, the English Concert gives the best performance of the Four Seasons that I have ever heard...so alive and vibrant, the violins really "sing"! You only get part of this stunning Four Seasons and the opening of the Gloria(great singing and perfect tempo), but all of the other selections are the complete work. And what a glorious selection it is. I love the two guitar concertos(the Lute Concerto is played on guitar here). This CD really brings together one of the leading period instruments ensembles to perform Vivaldi(The English Concert) and one of the leading modern instruments ensembles(Academy of St. Martin in the Fields), so that you get both perspectives on this music. The "Bullfinch" Flute Concerto(played on "transverse" flute here) is particularly charming. A magnificent album. Go Mad About Vivaldi!
