Editorial Reviews

Almost three decades ago, Albert Fuller made a set of three Scarlatti LPs for the Cambridge label. It was a marvelous collection, well selected to show off Scarlatti's variety and brilliantly played with great style and flair. Today, as Albert Fuller explains in his program notes, he no longer believes in using Kirkpatrick's Scarlatti Sonata pairs, for reasons he doesn't explain in detail. He has also chosen a narrower range of Scarlatti's work, eliminating some of the more exciting virtuoso pieces. His playing is more highly inflected than before, reflecting his poetic interpretations (which he details in writing). The result is a bit disappointing for those who like high- voltage Scarlatti, but this deeply thoughtful playing is stimulating and satisfying on its own terms. --Leslie Gerber

...this man is going to ultimately take his place in the pantheon of the very greatest piano artists -- Rubenstein, Richter and their few peers. He already has distinguished himself among concert reviewers as the antidote to the shallow showmanship of, for example, Lang Lang. Li's astonishing technique is in the service of a profound musicianship that galvanized me upon first hearing this recording's Scarlatti on the radio. Every single work on the CD is performed as beautifully and powerfully as I've ever heard it in decades of attentive listening. I am very excited about this young musician.

4 out of 5 stars A very young talent in progress! .......2007-04-02

Yundi Li really promises to become one of the most prominent colorists of this new century. Its sound is not precisely expressive but suggestive. In this sense he would be regarded a player whose style possesses something of the incorporeal vitality of Gieseking, the introspection of Radu Lupu and the phrasing of Guiomar Novaes. His next recordings on Debussy and Ravel must be first order performances.

Personally I think his Mozart must be polished and matured (because Mozart is not Haydn), his Scarlatti is plenty of admirable sharpness and wondrous vitality; his Schumann is hovered by that enigmatic atmosphere that embosses and enriches the Romantic mood of this well known Op. And his Liszt possesses that flaming elegance with abrupt concessions of virtuous splendor. Somehow he reminds me to the young Brendel in the late fifties

The Italians have a fortunate expression: Augury. So, don't forget him, because he will be one of the masters in the next years to come. .

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Performance.......2007-03-23

I have heard this pianist in a live performance and his recordings are better. This one(and I have them all) is particularly good. Not as good as Lang Lang but close.

4 out of 5 stars Competent but not Enlightened.......2007-02-12

Little more needs to be said than has been said by the many other reviewers. I came to the CD enthralled with Yundi Li through his recordings of Chopin and Liszt. I was especially eager to hear what he would do with Schumann's Carnaval.

I was a bit disappointed. I believe there is more to this music than Yundi Li mines. His Scarlatti and Mozart are also well played but not memorable. There is much more that could have been communicated with the Mozart that Yundi Li did not find.

The title "Vienna Recital" led me to believe that this was a live recording of a recital given in Vienna, but there is no applause and no indication of this being a live performance. I was a little surprised by that.

Taken together, I was pleased to see that Yundi Li is branching out beyond his limited repertoire of Chopin and Liszt, but he has yet to bring to his new repertoire what he has so admirably accomplished with his earlier choices.

5 out of 5 stars A Master in the Works.......2007-01-29

Yundi Li has been unfairly typecast in the mold of lesser artists, such as the technically brilliant but emotionally bombastic Lang Lang, simply because of his age. Well, with age comes seasoning and it's already happening with this gifted pianist. Having seen both in recitals, Li has a subtler , more textured approach that gives dynamic force and delicacy equal footing. This CD includes a variety of choices not previously in Mr. Li's catalog and it must be said, he is growing by leaps and bounds as an interpreter. There's no doubting his virtuosity: Li's technical skill is unsurpassed. But it's the clearer and more emotionally resonent recordings represented here that show a true artist expanding upon his talents. When I saw him in Boston, he used none of Lang Lang's bombastic showmanship and, rather, let the music speak for itself. He even ended with "Sun Showers" from his DVD, which was not listed in the program. One went away in amazement, just trying to gauge where this artist will emerge next. This CD was prevalent in that night's program and, if anything, Yundi Li improved on the originals. A treat with more treats, no doubt, to come.

5 out of 5 stars Horowitz Shines in Uncharacteristic Repertoire........2003-03-08

Volume Five of Sony's Vladimir Horowitz reissue cobbles together the pianist's live and studio recordings of music from the Baroque and Classical era.

From about 1950 on, Muzio Clementi's music was often featured on Horowitz's programs. Despite his advocacy, the pianist was unable to spark a Clementi-revival, as he did with Scarlatti and Scriabin. Yet, in Horowitz's hands, Clementi's music emerges as convincing and compelling. Horowitz plays the isolated sonata movements with characteristic clarity, technical control, and deft phrasing--hinting and Clementi's pre-echo of romanticism while honoring the era's Classical framework.

When playing Bach, Horowitz generally relied on Ferruccio Busoni's inimitable transcriptions. Horowitz greatly admired--even worshiped--Busoni and considered his arrangements the ideal transference of Bach's music to the modern piano. This Chorale Prelude, recorded for a GoodYear Tire promotional album in 1969, is played with appropriate reverence. The performance demonstrates that Horowitz's ability to suspend one line above another, his control of part writing is every bit as astonishing as Glenn Gould's, and his tone is a lot more pleasing.

The hallmarks of Horowitz's Scarlatti can be heard in the two Sonatas heard here: perfect transference of Scarlatti's sound world onto the modern piano; infinite grades of detachment and color; careful use of the sustaining pedal; flawless judgment of dynamics--from soft-softer-softest on the lower end, yet never pushing the piano too far into the forte range.

Horowitz always seemed at home with Haydn's diverse pianistic textures and musical humor. The pianist plays the opening movement of the C-major Sonata at a much broader tempo than usual, phrasing it as if it were an opera aria. The second movement, one of Haydn's wittiest rondos, runs at a brisk tempo, with the sudden key-shifts and off-beat accents handled with Horowitz's usual aplomb.

Horowitz was not congenial to late Beethoven, and felt that the piano works after Op. 81a were not meant for public performance--certainly not for today's mammoth concert halls. The pianist made an exception to his ban on Beethoven's late piano music for the Sonata in A major, Op. 101, performing it occasionally: in the 1930s, in 1967, 1980, and during his disastrous 1983 tour. In 1988, the intrepid Thomas Frost found several performances from 1967 recitals, spliced them together, and nervously presented the final product to Horowitz for approval. Much to Frost's surprise, Horowitz consented to release the Beethoven, along with several shorter works. This is pianistically one of the finest Op. 101s ever committed to disc (but his concert performances from 1980 were even more polished). For once, Beethoven's murky late piano writing is clear. The first movement sounds almost Wagnerian in its pathos. The dotted rhythms in the march are Schumannesque, the accents nearly brutal--no other performance on this work so clearly demonstrates Beethoven's influence on Schumann. The fugue is played with unprecedented clarity, despite a few quite inconsequential wrong notes--no pianist gets through this fugue unscathed.

The sound varies, given the diverse recording locales, but remains acceptable.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful "Recital".......2000-11-22

Volume Five of Vladimir Horowitz's "Complete Masterworks Recordings" is a delightful collection of baroque and classical gems. But don't let the title fool you, this is not a single concert recital but instead an assortment of studio and live recordings ranging from 1963 through 1972. The other thing to be aware of with this disc is a majority of this material is also included on "Discovered Treasures" -- don't get both as I did. Anyway, back to the title at hand. The Clememti Sonatas are morsels of ear candy while the Bach-Busoni is achingly beautiful (and definitely superior to Evgeny Kissin's recording). Two more Scarlatti Sonatas (K319 & K260) are played with the passion that only Horowitz can bring to this composer's works, and then he goes on to perfectly capture the delicate grace of the first movement of Haydn's C-major Sonata and the forcefulness of its second movement. The final selection on this CD is a 1967 live recording of Beethoven's 28th Piano Sonata. While Horowitz recorded Beethoven Sonatas from the early and middle periods throughout his career, this is one of the few recordings he made of a late Sonata. Unfortunately, the solemn first movement is marred by numerous coughs from the Queens College audience, but Horowitz's playing is so masterful that you quickly forget about it (although I would not make this your definitive version -- check out Pollini's recording as well). Overall, "A Baroque and Classical Rectal" is as enjoyable a volume as any of the nine Horowitz "Masterworks" titles.

5 out of 5 stars Classic "Recital".......2001-04-01

Of the more than two dozen classical guitar CDs I have purchased over the past few years, John Williams' budget-priced "Guitar Recital" on Sony Essential Classics has to rank among the best of them. And this is a list that includes all of the Segovia Volumes, some classic Parkening discs and several other Williams titles. This recital features six beautiful Sonatas by Scarlatti, including the gorgeous E-major Sonata (K 380) which was featured on Williams' "Romance of the Guitar" compilation released last year. The Villa-Lobos Preludes and the Paganini works are no slouches either. Despite all the magical solo classical guitar discs in my collection from which to choose, I find myself reaching for "Guitar Recital" more than any of the others.

        5 out of 5 stars Franco Platino's excellent playing.......2007-05-14

I've been listening to classical guitar music and players since Segovia live forty years ago, with a large recording collection, and I found this album by Franco Platino to be excellent music, fine playing, and most enjoyable listening. I ordered this CD after meeting him, following a guitar concert in the DC area, and I'm quite pleased with this find.

5 out of 5 stars transcendending the status quo.......2002-03-19

As a classical guitarist I have undoubtedly listened to hundreds of guitarists attempt the same repertoire as Franco Platino. However, I have never witnessed anyone-- ANYONE-- approach the level of musicianship that Mr. Platino has reached. Scintillating scales, supple phrasing, and an ever-present singing quality result in the most profound guitar recording extant. ...

        5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2001-11-14

Wonderful CD! I'm not well-educated in terms of music, but have to say that this is fantastic. I'm not at all uncomfortable having this disk in the cd player along with Andres Segovia.

        5 out of 5 stars Stellar Performance!.......2000-04-03

There is little that is unusual in the content of the programme; what is unusual is the standard of its performance. This is one of the finest records of guitar playing I have encountered in many years. It is of star quality in every respect and, given the stylistic range and difficulty of the music, that is an accolade not to be taken lightly.

5 out of 5 stars Some Pictures Never Fade.......2004-12-06

The now deceased Sviotoslav Richter has long enjoyed the title as interpreter supremo of Moussourgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Very recently, Yevgeny Kissin, who is no slouch himself, entered the fray with his own recording. It is one of music's little ironies that modern-day critics still quibble over which of of these two prodigiously talented Russian pianists owns what might be the most prodigiously Russian mainstay of the piano literature, when this prize should have gone to an American over 50 years ago. The world is a remarkable place, and the short-lived William Kapell was a remarkable pianist.

Sadly, Kapell's record suffers from every conceivable technical disadvantage. It was recorded live at New York's Frick Collection months before his death in 1953. The source material is a poorly preserved, "bootleg" tape. From all indications, the Frick recital was recorded over something else which remains faintly audible at virtually all times. To top it all off, the piano is slightly out-of-tune! It is no exaggeration to float the term "disastrous" with respect to the original production merits of this album.

The performance is another matter entirely. Despite ostensibly insurmountable odds, Kapell's recording of "Pictures at an Exhibition" deserves the gold. Kapell did not indulge virtuosity for virtuosity's sake. Within each piece, he exposed colors and motifs in such bold relief that each "Picture" seemed more vibrant on his badly recorded piano than on most accounts of the fully-orchestrated version.

In comparison, Richter and Kissin's recordings sound decidedly dull. They may lean more muscle into it and rarely miss a note, but Richter and Kissin persistently gloss over passages that Kapell tenaciously probed.

Kapell's achievement on this album didn't end with Moussourgsky. He performed engaging accounts of Schumann and Chopin, and charged nobly through Aaron Copland's intriguing if not entirely gratifying Piano Sonata.

I realize one is not supposed to cross-comment on other customer reviews, but I was rather surprised that one review panned "Pictures" and praised the Scarlatti. The Scarlatti was the only piece recorded over a span of tape beyond repair. This recording had to be "reconstructed" by manually splicing the notes missing from the "Frick" tape. It well may be that the Frick run-through was brilliant, but the Scarlatti heard here required rather agile post-production abracadabra.

This disc is a sad but provocative hint at what might have been had William Kapell lived more than one month beyond his 31st birthday. Buy it for the "Pictures," but decide for yourself if you want to invest further in RCA's valiant attempt to touch-up the few extant recordings of this brilliant and woefully underappreciated American pianist.

          5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2003-11-10

This disk served as my introduction (and so far, my only exposure) to Kapell. I'd read favorable reviews and so decided to take the plunge (I was looking for a recording of "Pictures").
I would recommend this performance (recorded live at New York City's Frick Collection in 1953) to anyone, including newcomers to classical music. While Richter's Sofia reading of Pictures is in a class by itself, this one comfortably manages to more than hold its own. The other works are all beautifully played by someone who truly understands and "lives with" them; the Copland, which I'd never heard before, was a particular treat. The variety offered is especially nice--the listener travels backwards through time from the 20th Century to the 17th, with Kapell serving as masterful guide. The sonics are quite clean thanks to a super remastering job, allowing this disk to hold its head up in the company of more modern recordings.
Ironically, the lion's share of the performance consists of works composed by men who, like Kapell, died much too young. That his work remains available is his parting gift to us for which we should be grateful. Show your appreciation and respect by sampling his legacy--I promise you won't regret it. Highest recommendation.

          5 out of 5 stars unforgettable "Pictures".......2003-09-28

I disagree strenously with Frank Walker. I've heard quite a number of performances of "Pictures at an Exhibition" and Kapell's is by far the best. Where others offer an empty showy display of virtuosity with a rapid blur of sounds, Kapell brings out the melodies, revealing the beauty and intrinsic dramatic qualities of the various sections. Some of the sections are a real revelation, and others are just breathtaking. This is one of my very favorite piano CDs.

5 out of 5 stars A Phenomenal and fortunate find........1999-08-27

The first and greatest of American pianists demonstrates his capabilites in a searing rendition of Pictures. The Copland sonata is down with a devastating conviction and drive. A must have for Kapell fans.(and that's with a 'K')

3 out of 5 stars Technically flawed recording nevertheless has gems in it........1999-08-01

This mono recording was apparently recovered from a damaged tape, and despite the modern technology used to remaster it, the recording remains distractingly flawed. The piano has quite a "ringy" tone and its bass register sounds attenuated. But what is really annoying is the faint, background presence of some voices from a wholly separate recording (apparently inadequately erased from a previous tape-recording.)

Once you get over the recording flaws, the disc does have its moments. I would not include the "Pictures" rendition among them, although its performance is certainly adequate. The Copland piece is interesting, while the Chopin (which I normally find difficult to be enthusiastic about) is quite vibrant and is delicately nuanced.

Capell demonstrates his originality in the rendition of the deceptively simple (and far too brief) Scarlatti piece. He virtually breathes life into this Baroque harpsichord piece, amazingly, managing to do so with minimal reliance on the piano's inherently better amplitude dynamics.

So this is still a worthy disc, especially for Copland, Scarlatti, and, of course, Capell fans.

Luciano Pavarotti sings his occassional program of arias and songs. His singing is very good. He is 65 and - despite his hair dye - he looks it. So his days as a performer are clearly numbered now.

However the title is very misleading. It is not a live recital; it's MANY live recitals, as this album is a collection of about four or five different recitals. The voice is recorded very close to the speakers, as if he were trying to cover the movement from one place to another. it also is obvious that Leone Magiera (the acompanist) plays four or five different pianos, none of them really the highest quality.

Overall, a wonderful gift for a Pavarotti nut (if you can get through the piano playing). Go ahead and buy it now. You will make Amazon smile and - trust me - you will be smiling to. Is there no better recomandation then this?

4 out of 5 stars The Golden Years Of Pavarotti.......2001-03-29

First I would like to say that I am very happy to see a solo release of NEW recordings from the great Pavarotti. I liked the program very much and I was glad to see him include songs that he had not previously commercially recorded. What gets me is that this Live Recital is not just one recital he recorded. This is a compilation of recorded songs and arias from four different recitals in four different years and four different opera houses ranging from 1997 to 2000. To me a true recital recording is one performance and speaks volumes on how an artist connects with his/her audience. But on the other hand the singing here is fantastic and those who want more new projects of Pavarotti (including me)won't be disappointed. This is a must for Pavarotti fans and tenor fans alike and please Maestroo Pavarotti, more new projects!!
