This version of Maury Yeston's Nine is so finely wrought that it deservedly won the 2003 Tony for Best Revival. While not a blockbuster, the original 1982 production, staged by Tommy Tune, was a nice success and allowed Raul Julia to make a splash as the only man in an otherwise entirely feminine cast. Inspired by Fellini's film 8 1/2, Nine succeeds in creating a strong male lead while parcelling out great songs to several different women. The mere fact that Antonio Banderas doesn't get eaten alive by the power cast around him (Chita Rivera, Mary Stuart Masterson, Jane Krakowski, and Laura Benanti) testifies to his charisma; even better, his singing is surprisingly confident ("Only with You" is downright sweet). And leave it to the Broadway pros to shine like diamonds: Listen, in particular, as Jane Krakowski steals the show with her sassy delivery of "A Call from the Vatican." You may need a cold shower after that one. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

As Good As The Original.......2006-07-26
I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the original, but this revival has won me over. And now I really like both cast albums.
The revival cast is just as good as the original, Banderas well cast as Guido. I prefer Chita Rivera over Lilliane Montevecchi on Follies Bergere,(could never understand what the hell she was singing!) And while Jane Krakowski is not exactly the (sadly) late Anita Morris, she is sexy in a different way and it works. I love Mary Stuart Masterson, who knew she was such a terrific singer?
The whole CD is beautifully done!
My impressions of Nine.......2006-02-23
Good music; very good performances. Am now acquainted with other sides of these performers.
The samples on this page are from the original.......2005-07-10
So I went to listen to some samples of the CD on Amazon before I bought it, and lo and behold, Amazon cheated a little and put the original Broadway cast album up for samples, not the revival. That is definitely Raul Julia singing, not Antonio Banderas. Amazon- get it together!
Great Revival Cast!.......2005-06-11
The cast & orchestrations are incredible for the Tony-winning 2003 revival of "Nine", surpassing even the original 1982 production.
Best tracks include:
My Husband Makes Movies
A Call From The Vatican [Jane Krakowski's Tony-winning number]
Only With You [Antonio Banderas' version outshines Raul Julia's original]
Folies Bergeres [Chita Rivera's big song]
The Bells Of St. Sebastian [though the original is somewhat better]
Unusual Way [Banderas/Benanti's beautiful duet & best song of the show]
Simple
Be On Your Own [Mary Stuart Masterson's gut-wrenching song]
A truly beautiful score!
A stellar version of "Nine".......2005-04-12
This revival recording of "Nine" is superb. I actually prefer it to the original Broadway recording and the London concert version (which are both fine). Maury Yeston's music and lyrics are among the best for any modern musical, and the cast here is ideal.
The performances are exemplary, from Antonio Banderas as womanizing film director Guido Contini and Mary Stuart Masterson as his long-suffering wife Luisa, to Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, and the rest. Their singing easily matches or surpasses the previous casts, and their acting on the whole is stronger. They just feel more assured to me. Banderas also sounds more feasibly Italian than previous Guidos, which is useful in terms of the character. For their part, the women put on fake accents, which has the potential to be a distraction, but here didn't bother me at all.
Highlights from the score and this album include Banderas's charismatic rendition of "Guido's Song," Krakowski's sexy "A Call from the Vatican," Benanti's almost impossibly-beautiful version of "Unusual Way," and Masterson's bitter and expertly acted "Be On Your Own." The orchestra here is smaller than previous versions, but this doesn't detract in any significant way. The strength of the music and the performances comes through just fine.

Zanna, Don't! takes place in a topsy-turvy world in which homosexuality is the norm and the minority heterosexuals must battle anti-straight prejudice. Set in a high school, the plot revolves around a teen fairy matchmaker (Zanna) and the hell that breaks loose when a boy and a girl dare fall in love with each other. Thankfully forgoing preachiness, creator Tim Acito manages to deliver a message of tolerance through a whole bunch of poppy, catchy songs, hearty dollops of humor (there's cheering--for a chess match), and, of course, a dab of magic (shades of the 1980 Olivia Newton-John vehicle Xanadu). While the show can be a little too nice at times, it's hard not to be won over by its impish exuberance. Fittingly, in the fall of 2003, Jai Rodriguez, who played the title role, transferred from the show's Off-Broadway run to TV, gaining fame as the "culture vulture" on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
great recording of a great show!.......2007-05-07
I saw the show in NYC and am so grateful to have it on CD.
Not musically great, but impossible to not smile at.......2005-10-16
I got this album on a whim, having heard of its unique premise, and planned to listen to it a time or two, then let it migrate to the back of my CD case. That was three weeks ago, and I haven't gone two days without listening to a few songs.
It's not that Zanna, Don't! is that impressive in terms of its actual music. With a few exceptions, notably "I Think We Got Love" and the surprisingly poignant "I Could Write Books," the show relies on novelty and a quick turn of phrase for its entertainment. This would make the show seem trivial if it weren't for its most noticeable chracteristic: its utter, total, overwhelming niceness.
Visit the show's website and you're greeted with a bubble-gum-colored, sparkly vision that makes the average person feel like vomiting. This show is that sensation's musical equivalent, in a more tolerable dose. It's almost too knowing that Zanna's accomplice in the show is a chirping bluebird. The entire show, the singers do nothing but sing peppy, chirruping songs that mention love every other word. I may seem to be criticizing, but the truth is that I can't stop listening to this show.
It may be a harmless, sugary slice of inoffensive pie, but it's irresistable. You will not be disappointed after listening to Zanna, Don't, as long as you don't expect musical genius.
Good . . . but there's better.......2005-03-13
I really like Zanna Don't, the music is fresh and brings a new life into musical theater, but so does Avenue Q. The story of Zanna Don't is something that even if you're not gay, you can relate to. The message is simple, love yourself, then others can love you. The stand-out track is "Someday You Might Love Me" which sums up the basic emotion of the whole musical. There are a few songs that lack a certian something, but most of the tracks are good, and for the most part the whole cast is very talented.
LOVELOVELOVELOVELOVE.......2005-01-25
I got this a couple of weeks ago, and I cannot stop listening to it! There is NO ONE in the cast who is weak, and the premise is very clever. I LOVE it. Jai and Anika and Enrico are AMAZING, and it is hillarious. Warnings: Don't expect genius lyrics, it IS supposed to be a very pop-ey score. Otherwise, I like all the ballads, especially the beautiful "I Could Write Books," and "Do you Know what it's Like?" You cannot listen to this without smiling, so get ready to fall in love!
Soooo energetic! .......2005-01-05
Definitely a good cd to have in your Broadway collection. If RENT was rock on the stage, ZANNA is pop on stage. Sometimes it is too campy, but it seems to mock its own craziness. Loved the message of the show and it comes across on the cd. Jai Rodriguez sounds nice on "Someday You Might Love Me" and Anika Larson has a killer belt. You know that this cd is contagious and silly as soon as you see its bubble gum pink cover.

Beautiful and Challenging.......2006-03-01
This wasn't a commercial sucess, in fact few people have heard of it. While it's not for everyone Ricky Ian Gordon's musical based on sections of Proust's "Rememberence of Things Past" is a hidden gem especially for fans of Sondheim's "Sundays In the Park With George". Like "Sundays", "Albertine" is about the relationship between the artist and the muse. In this case an older Proust recalling his early love affair with the enigmatic Albertine. Marcel's relationship with Albertine is revealed as a play within a play as his older self looks on.
Most of the musical numbers have a sense of sadness and longing to them as a reflection of fact that Marcel and Albertine never make a connection in life: it is in art, and in Proust's rememberece that the connection exists. But songs such as "The Different Albertines", "Lullaby", or "Talk About the Weather" have a deep sadness and a grasping quality while the more upbeat numbers like "Balbac By the Sea" and "The Ferret Song" have an almost mocking quality.
Kelli O'Hara is wonderful as Albertine, a character whom we only see through the eyes of Marcel. As a result there is something ephemeral about her- we never see the real Albertine only the different ideas that Marcel has about who she is. O'Hara's clear soprano reveals the girlish Albertine, the sensous libertine, and the confused woman. Many people will know O'Hara as Clara in the OBC of "The Light in the Piazza". We hear shades of Clara's innocence and childishness in the early Albertine, but then the prism shifts and we see a different Albertine and a different aspect of O'Hara's performance.
If your tastes run strictly towards big splashy commercial musicals (which I enjoy as well)this is not for you. But if you're one of those people who constantly complains that there is nothing new in theater, this is for you.
Brilliant!.......2006-02-21
I am a big fan of the so-called "saviours of musical theatre" or Post-Sondheimian or modern musical or whatever you call them composers like Michael John LaChiusa, Jason Robert Brown, Jeanine Tesori, Andrew Lippa and my all-time favourite, Adam Guettel, whom I worship. But on my constant search for these composers, I found Ricky Ian Gordon here on amazon.com and I listened to the 30-minute song previews of Bright Eyed Joy and just from hearing those little sections, I knew I had to get one of his CDs. I couldn't get my hands on Bright Eyed Joy but I grabbed My Life With Albertine instead and I'm sooooooo glad I did. However, I must say for anyone considering this purchase that this score is not for everyone. At first, I was a bit unsure but after a few more times listening to it over and over, I was able to appreciate and adore it. But in no way do I think this musical is for anyone who loves the common showtune crap that has plagued Broadway for decades (ex. Andrew Lloyd Webber...yuck!). But for others, Gordon is an amazing, unique and intricate composer that creates melodies that stick in my head all day long. Also, I really enjoy the amazing performances on this CD like Kelli O'Hara, Brent Carver, Chad Kimball, Donna Lynne Champlin (I love her lullaby) and my favourite, Emily Skinner's I Want You is in a word, awesome. Gordon offers some interesting songs such as Balbec-by-the-Sea which almost seems like a mockery of cheesy showtunes with the except of the dream-like segment, "Purple light beneath a curtain". As well as the charming Ferret Song, the beautiful But What I Say and Carver's wonderful Song of Solitude. While, I Need Me a Girl and The Street remind me of Oliver's Oom-Pah Pah and Who Will Buy?. And who could forget the powerful exchange within The Letters. I will cherish this score and I really really really hope Gordon writes another musical for our listening pleasure!
Solidarity with Eric Glover!.......2005-01-16
I rarely make decisions about whether or not to see a show or a movie, read a book or listen to a CD based on critical response, but sadly, I made one fatal error-I skipped "My Life with Albertine", Ricky Ian Gordon and Richard Nelson's beautiful adaptation of the Albertine sections of Proust's "Remembrance of Things Past" at Playwright's Horizon, simply because it got mostly negative reviews. To this day, almost two years later, I kick myself every time I listen to the cast album.
Brent Carver is chilling as Proust, and Chad Kimball is very good as Young Marcel. Kelli O'Hara is a real find as Albertine. Her "If It Is True" is one of the best musical theatre compositions this side of Sondheim. Uberdiva Emily Skinner stuns as Mlle. Lea, a sassy lesbian chanteuse. Ever since we saw "Side Show" in 1997, I've had a major crush on her, and my wife has hated her guts (just kidding!). The rest of the cast is also splendid.
As the title of my review suggests, I agree 100% with Eric Glover, soon to be musical theatre critic extraordinaire. Anybody who can't see the beauty in this marvelous show is not only deaf, but blind.
great new musical.......2004-06-08
MY LIFE WITH ALBERTINE is a new musical from the promising duo of Ricky Ian Gordon and Richard Nelson. It debuted at Playwrights Horizons to mostly-favourable reviews and featured a cast of bright young Broadway talent.
Based on incidents in 'Remembrance of Things Past' by Marcel Proust, ALBERTINE features a lush and evocative score (very European in its presentation) with standout numbers including "Is it Too Late?", "My Soul Weeps", "But What I Say", "Sometimes" and "If it is True".
The youthful cast is headed by Kelli O'Hara as Albertine, with Chad Kimball (INTO THE WOODS) as Marcel. Also featured are Donna Lynne Champlin, Brent Carver, Emily Skinner and Brooke Sunny Moriber, among others.
A Bright New Broadway Composer.......2004-02-16
I'm a great fan of Broadway music in general, but most particularly of the more artistic (as opposed to commercial) composers, such as the new generation of artists know as the "Post-Sondheim Composers," which include Adam Guettel, Jason Robert Brown, Michael John La Chiusa and Ricky Ian Gordon. I came to know and very much enjoy Gordon's work with the CD BRIGHT EYED JOY, and if you're looking for an introduction to his music I'd suggest starting there rather than with this CD.
MY LIFE WITH ALBERTINE is the first musical by Gordon I've heard. The singing is good, not stellar, but enjoyable. There are a few songs here that I love to listen to, including the lovely soprano ballads "Is It Too Late?" (reprised by the tenor lead) and "If It Is True." There are a few songs, such as the more odd/perky "Ferret Song," that I find a bit annoying. A lot of the music takes on more a narrative tone, making them less self-contained out of the context of the score. While I enjoy music from Broadway show because it tells a story, I still think that a really great song should be able to stand alone, yet be enhanced within the context of the story, and such is not always the case here. However, one piece that is particularly impressive is "The Letters" in which friends of the lovers advise them what to write to one another. It's one of those great ensemble songs that has everyone singing over one another (think Sondheim's "Now Later Soon" from A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC).
Overall, I think this is an interesting CD for those who are great collectors of musical theater as a whole and enjoy discovering obscure productions or up-and-coming composers. But for the average Broadway listener whose tastes run to Andrew Lloyd Webber or Disney musicals, this might not appeal as much.

The band is difficult to work with in person. They accused me of trying to get them at a charity rate for a non-charity event. When I approached them on the topic they lied to me and threatened to sue for slander or libel.
Fairly standard bluegrass fare, well-arranged vocals, good-natured humor, and instrumental prowess .......2005-11-25
Playing Time - 53:36 -- Minnesota bluegrass band Monroe Crossing includes a number of classic Bill Monroe songs in their repertoire. While they primarily focus on traditional offerings, they also branch out onto some backroads of bluegrass along their road trip with some numbers like Bob Dylan's "Nashville Skyline Rag" and one original song. With a goal to play all the cities and towns in Minnesota, Monroe Crossing took their entertaining and energetic show on the road and recorded their fourth album in as many years between November, 2003 and May, 2004 in towns like Barrett, Lake Benton, Lakeville, and Red Wing.
This hard-working band includes Lisa Fuglie (fiddle, mandolin), Art Blackburn (guitar), Graham Sones (banjo), Matt Thompson (mandolin, fiddle) and Mark Anderson (bass). Fuglie and Blackburn handle lead vocals. Matt Thompson is the third voice on all trios. Mark Anderson usually only sings bass on gospel quartets. Sones provides "weather effects" on "In the Pines." This album fully conveys the Monroe Crossing spirit and cohesion. A regional band stands to gain much from a standout live album such as this one. With a little emcee work and some applause thrown in for good measure, we can experience these special moments with them on the road. Their audiences appear to truly enjoy their standard bluegrass fare, well-arranged vocals, good-natured humor, and especially their instrumental prowess.
As part of an Americana Concert, "Wayfaring Stranger" and one original waltz, Art Blackburn's "Friendship's Road," are presented in collaboration with the White Bear Area Choral Association's Heritage Singers. The latter was arranged by Lisa Fuglie for chorus, and the refrain of "sweet is the journey on friendship's road" would have been an optimistic message with which to close this project. Instead, we're treated to the rollicking "Orange Blossom Special" which, when well played, never fails to thoroughly excite an audience. Monroe Crossing's exhilarating arrangement features fiddle, mandolin, banjo, lyrics, and a twin-fiddle finale.
A Monroe Crossing set is characterized by traditional standards, originals, instrumentals, and gospel numbers. They might want to take a few more risks, play further afield from Minnesota, and incorporate even more new or obscure material into their repertoire. On the other hand, their thrilling sound and stage presence are based on a successful tried-and-true formula that exuberantly builds pleasing relationships and rapport with their bluegrass-loving audiences. Malcolm Williamson (1931-2003)
Complete Works for Piano
Antony Gray, piano
3 CD Set
Malcolm Williamson was fortunate enough to have been able to devote himself entirely to composition since the early 1960s - in the catalogue to celebrate his 50th birthday, produced by his publishers, he was described as "the most commissioned composer of his generation" - and in 1975 became the Nineteenth Master of the Queen's Music, the first non-Briton ever to have held that position. His compositional output included symphonies, stage works, chamber, choral and religious music, and film scores. He also had a keen interest in composing music for children. He composed a number of operas for children, including one based on Oscar Wilde's The Happy Prince, and 'cassations', miniature operas for audience participation which were initially inspired by a desire to teach his own children the mechanics of opera. From his interest in music for the young, Williamson also developed an interest in music for the mentally and physically handicapped.
