It is not just the timbre of Norah Jones's voice that is mature beyond her 22 years. Her assured phrasing and precise time are more often found in older singers as well. She is instantly recognizable, blending shades of Billie Holiday and Nina Simone without sounding like anyone but herself. Any way you slice it, she is a singer to be reckoned with. Her readings of the Hank Williams classic "Cold Cold Heart" and Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You" alone are worth the price of the CD. Jones's own material, while not bad, pales a bit next to such masterpieces. They might have fared better had she and producer Arif Mardin opted for some livelier arrangements, taking better advantage of brilliant sidemen such as Bill Frisell, Kevin Breit, and Brian Blade; or if the tunes had simply been given less laconic performances. Jones has all the tools; what will come with experience and some careful listening to artists like J.J. Cale and Shirley Horn is the knack of remaining low-key without sounding sleepy--sometimes less is not, in fact, more. --Michael Ross

This is such an outstanding production, so much better than the later(I think) CD. Miss Jones should be careful which guitar players back her up. She should stick to Bill Frizell or maybe she should try Mark Knoffler, if she can get him away from Emmy Lou.

I knew that Nora Jones was good music but i had no idea just how good...My sister-in-law bought me this CD for Father's Day...i have listened to it 3 times today. The way i would describe her lyrics and delivery is equal to "Musical Rose Petals". So smooth and so inviting is her voice. I really love the Piano work also. Her birth name being "Geethali",Nora Jones along with the likes of Michael Buble have added a nice,new,fresh selection of music to today's currently enemic sound. This album made her only the second artist ever to sweep the "Big Four" being Album,Song,Record,& Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards in 2003. Standouts for me include: "Come Away With Me","Don't Know Why", and i really like her rendition of Hank Williams SR.'s "Cold,Cold Heart". With her throw back to Billie Holiday/Roberta Flack days voice coupled with a very welcomed piano based style, Nora Jones can take me away anytime! If you've waited to give her a listen ,as did I, do yourself a favor and don't wait any longer.

Okay, she's not quite a standards specialist, but a lot of people think Norah Jones is well on her way to setting some new standards of her own.

The daughter of famed Indian sitarist Ravi Shankar, Jones grew up in Dallas with her mother, and her work is firmly rooted in the dry Texas soil. The youngest in this survey (she was born in 1979), Jones burst on the scene in 2002 with this debut album of nine original songs plus a handful of country and pop standards. Renowned for her sweet and soulful set of pipes, Jones has often been compared to Billie Holiday. There's also a touch of Roberta Flack and Emmylou Harris in there.

Come Away with Me is an honest-to-goodness country-blues recording that you can sit back with on the front porch rocker on a brisk autumn afternoon. Sort of like an early James Taylor, Jones mixes a little bit of country, folk, and soul into a collection that's the perfect antidote to today's insincere fare. The public must have sensed the same thing, because it bought this CD in boxcar loads, and in 2003 Jones walked away with eight Grammies, including album of the year and best new artist.

The title track, written by Jones, is the first new song I've heard in a long time that's utterly believable. "Come away with me and I'll never stop loving you," she begs, and it's as though she's singing it to you, personally. To Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" she brings an R & B feel, petitioning in anguish to her lover man to come back, body and soul. "I've Got to See You Again" is an exquisite modern torch song in the same vein, while "One Flight Down" is an upbeat tune with chord progressions right out of Paul McCartney's Wings songs, like "Carry That Load." She ends with Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You." Close your eyes, let Jones's words envelope you with their soulful caress, and you'll sense that she's a lot nearer than your living room speakers.

Good for my ears........2007-06-02

I see some reviews calling her Snorah Jones, and others which debate whether what she sings is truly jazz. Who cares! If it tastes good I eat it: if it sounds good I listen to it. This girl possesses a unique and expressive vocal instrument. It sounds good to me, facilitative for relaxing in a comfortable chair with a martini or cabernet after a hard day's work. If I were three or four decades younger, it would be perfect make out music.

But her unruly resume hardly prepares you for the emotionally rich, softy sensual music on her major label debut. Moving from tortured torch songs such as "Lonely Lonely" to pulsating originals like "Mushaboom," it also contains stunning remakes of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" and the Bee Gees' "Inside and Out," tunes Feist not only makes her own but effectively uses to dissect her romantic desolation. Fiest runs the gamut of musical styles from A to B on this record, from soul (ish) vocals to Norah Jones-like musings to out and out disco which was bad enough the first time - may the BeeGees rot in hell. I guess it's ok if you're an "indie" artist to regurgitate past musical styles that weren't too good to begin with and add a few electronic flourishes so you won't be accused of being too too retro and then add some dishpan shallow boy/girl lyrics and voila - pop genius! Fieist manages to be both sultry and sucky at the same time. Well at least all I lost was time having downloaded it, listened to it twice and deleted it. Not my bag, dad.

I only found out about Leslie Feist in an LA Times article in early July 2007, and bought a couple discs on a lark. Good investment. This lady is gonna go far. A less mature work than The Reminder but very high-quality work.

I would rate the songs I like at 5 stars each but can't rate the cd any higher than a 3 since there are only two period. Her voice is sweet and velvety but I just don't play it that much.

There is one particular word for describing the sound of Feist.

Refreshing.

This '05 debut album for Feist is crisp, clear, and melodious. Right from the moment "Gatekeeper" grabs your attention you're hooked, and glad to be so. It's hard to place Feist into any one category of music. She makes me think of a possible Norah Jones wrapped in a modern shell of jazzy, loungy, and slightly Indie influences. Like nothing you've ever heard, certainly not in the last few years. Her more recent album, The Reminder, is capturing most of the attention of listeners right now and rightfully so, but this work is not to be forgotten. For a debut solo album, Let It Die seems to lack no maturity, and to think that it was recorded in a mere week amid her many international tours of '05! These songs show no hint of being mindlessly crammed onto a record ready for the shelves. In fact, it shows no haste at all. Simply the most relaxing music, but not to the point that it's short on pop, albeit in a very subtle way.

"Mushaboom" picks up the pace followed by worthy-of-flagship-status "Let It Die". All of the next three tracks are gold when you arrive at the strange tale of "When I Was a Young Girl" to which there is nothing I can compare it to except maybe Norah Jones' "Sinkin' Soon". "Secret Heart" is a fun little inquiring kind of tune with nice subtle vocals. Now we come to the place that the critics really rave about here. Feist's remake of one of my favorite Bee Gees songs "Inside and Out" is killer. The Bee Gees did such an original good job on it that its tough to say this one's better, but its close. Alot jazzier to boot. After you finish jivin' out, you arrive at unexpected "Tout Doucement". Feist's surrounding influences shine out in this jaunty little tune, so jaunty that you feel like you're strolling down a sunny avenue in Paris one morning on your way to a little cafe. Afterall, it was recorded in Paris. This charming tune will tell you that. Last we have "Now At Last", suitable but certainly not least. Of all the songs on this album it seems that this one above all others was made for Feist. Simple, delicate, and just really nice.

You simply must check out this one of a kind CD, certainly one of the best of '05. Enjoy

Time to Let it Die.......2007-05-18

I read that Feist was a sort of Norah Jones on steroids. I like Norah Jones but I'm not crazy about Norah Jones. I wanted originality. I wanted a jazz singer with a little more punch than Norah Jones. After making it through the first 8 tracks of Let It Die, I did. Feist needs steroids. Her voice is weak. There's a sexy breathless style common these days and then there's "I have no lung capacity". Feist seems the latter. Steroids could help.

Sorry, I didn't like it. The sound quality is poor which may contribute to the artist's poor performance. 2 stars because it's different and different is good. I don't think things will get better in future releases because the talent doesn't burst through. There's talent in her but not in the quantity to smash into your CD "Top Played" list.

This soundtrack to the film written and directed by Craig Brewer is as steeped in the Southern blues as his Hustle and Flow was in hip-hop. The biggest surprise here is how well actor Samuel L. Jackson (who seems to have a thing for "Snake" films) holds his own as a blues singer against selections from Son House and R.L. Burnside. He sounds like a throwback to the classic Delta bluesmen on "Just Like a Bird Without a Feather," does a convincing take on the Blind Lemon Jefferson title track, and rocks the juke joint on "Alice Mae" and a down-and-dirty recasting of "Stack-O-Lee." Produced by the Bo-Keys' Scott Bomar (who also scored Brewer's previous movie), the 17-cut soundtrack features a kaleidoscopic array of blues, from the primal throb of the Black Keys' "When the Lights Go Out" and the funk of Bobby Rush's classic "Chicken Heads" to the spiritual lilt of Precious Bryant's "Morning Train" and the North Mississippi Allstars' expansive finale, "Mean Ol' Wind Died Down." --Don McLeese

Black Snake Moan, the latest film from Hustle And Flow director Craig Brewer, tells a tale of love, betrayal, sex and salvation. It stars Samuel L Jackson, Christina Ricci and Justin Timberlake. This soundtrack to the excellent film was obviously put together by people who both know and feel a responsibility to the blues. Samuel L Jackson adds vocals to four tracks and does an admirable job; on 'Just like a Bird Without a feather' he more than holds his own alongside classic blues singers like RL Burnside and Jessie Mae Hemphill. John Doe--from the punk band X--adds a track as well that fits in much better than one might think.

Wonderful Soundtrack!.......2007-03-11

Watching the movie I was overwhelmed by the greatness of its soundtrack, and after purchasing this CD I was pleased to see that everything still seemed as wonderful. I am not a blues afficianado, but I do appreciate good music. I think that most anyone could enjoy this soundtrack.

On this relatively good collection of mostly blues tunes, the main curiosity item is to see how well actor Samuel Jackson carries off the singer role. He sings four songs on this soundtrack CD, and acquits himself pretty admirably, although the standard comment about the day job does apply here. Otherwise the theme is the blues, but actually several of the tunes swim in that deep, dark water where blues, soul, gospel and rock 'n' roll meet. I thought the John Doe cut was excellent, and I also really liked the R&B leanings of the Bobby Rush track, and the Black Keys song is pretty great too. The score cues by Scott Bomar provide nice atmosphere in a Ry Cooder-ish vein (smoky slide guitar). In all, the CD is a reasonably enjoyable listen.

North Mississippi Hills blues sampler.......2007-02-26

The soundtrack to the upcoming film, "Black Snake Moan" is a nice curiosity for the blues aficionado, but like opening Pandora's box for the uninitiated. Those familiar with the hypnotic, drowning, trance-like sounds of the North Mississippi hills a la Fat Possum records will find a lot to enjoy here, including tracks by the actual visible heads of that style, such as the late Jessie Mae Hemphill and R.L. Burnside. In fact, this entire CD relies heavily on the aural legacy of R.L. Burnside, providing some sort of last will after the bluesman's passing last year.
For those unfamiliar with the evolution of blues as a genre, the North Mississippi blues is somehow primitive, repetitive (almost mantra-like), but results in a very authentic, tribal-style variety of the blues. But blues and movie lovers alike will be curious about Samuel L. Jackson's credibility as a bona fide blues singer. The surprise is how adequate he is. He might not be the next Muddy Waters, but he delivers convincingly and, despite lacking a thunderous voice, he owns the role of a bluesman as a modern herald of human suffering. His outrageous cover of "Stackolee" fronting the R.L. Burnside live unit plus Luther Dickinson from the North Mississippi Allstars is a highlight, but his recitative to eerie bluesy sounds in "Black Snake Moan" is even better.
The established names showing up in this CD include Bobby Rush, fresh from the Chitlin circuit, acoustic blues-gospel singer Precious Bryant, as well as the aforementioned Jessie Mae Hemphill and R.L. Burnside. One misses at least one track from the other godfather of the North Mississippi sound, Junior Kimbrough. Many listeners will be already familiar with the North Mississippi Allstars. Their entry on this CD is a mellow, evocative piece augmented by fife-and-drum background over NMA's classic and classy slide sound.
The soundtrack tracks, by Scott Bomar, include a true allstar lineup including the Dickinson brothers and Charlie Musselwhite on harp, and they are uniformly exciting and interesting, keeping a sense of continuity throughout the CD.
In summary, this is more than a curiosity for blues aficionados, sitting proudly by their Junior Kimbroughs' and R.L. Burnsides', and it will definitively attract outside attention to this particular brand of the blues, providing an introductory-level package that will bring on more "true believers". Highly recommended.

Stack-O-Lee from RL Burnside CD "Well, Well, Well..." on MC Records.......2007-02-13

This is a very good soundtrack heavily influenced by R.L. Burnside. That raunchy, X-rated version of Stack-O-Lee sung by Samuel Jackson is directly from a version that Burnside sings on his MC Records CD "Well, Well, Well..." (that incidentally has blues singer Curtis Salgado laughing wickedly in the background). I believe the Burnside recording is the most unique version of this song ever recorded.

With Show Your Bones, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs follow up to the heralded Fever to Tell Karen O economizes on the screaming that so marked the trio's debut EP. And oh how she exceeds her oft-noted influences (PJ Harvey and Chrissie Hynde, for two): Whether she's hanging back with a staggered beat on "Phenomena," or riding on the kick-drum-pounded opening to "Honeybear," she's always ready to disappear in a burst of Nick Zinner's guitars and Brian Chase's drums. The YYYs thrill precisely because of their keen mix, Karen O spiking the upper ranges (dig the caterwaul in "Mysteries") with a sharply cut vocal line or a simple, full-bodied singsong delivery while the guitars spin thick storms of sound before retreating to atmospherics (try the transition from the quick throttle of "Cheated Hearts" into the Cure-ish "Dudley," for one example). And marvel at how well radio would be served by blasting the acoustic, pleading vibe of "Warrior." Fabulous. --Andrew Bartlett

It's hard to create a new sound in rock these days, but the Yeah Yeah Yeahs manage to do it on this albumn. The rough overdriven guitar, straightforeward drumming, and raspy vocals all combine beautifully to create this unique sound. In exploring new indie rock, this one is a real find.

YYY's second LP shows depth & growth........2007-05-17

Ever since I heard them a few years ago, I've been hooked on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I first heard the diverse and fun Fever To Tell, and while that didn't have a lot of depth, it didn't really need it. It's one of those that sold because of how much it rocked. I recently got around to the debut EP, which was also quite good as well. On this album, lots is added that wasn't quite as present as on the other albums.

Karen O kind of reminds me of Tegan and/or Sara on some of the tracks. She does a lot more singing on here and less yelping than in previous times, but it's not a boring record. I think "Honeybear" sounds like the "old" YYY's. I've always enjoyed Nick Zinner's guitar riffs and some of the stuff here is actually quite interesting. For one thing, half of the lyrics are cryptic, like stream of consciousness tracks. Then you get the ones about unrequited love like "Cheated Hearts," one of the album's finest tracks, if not the finest.

Songs like "The Sweets" show an added musical depth. The track is simple, yet I like how it all flows together on the track. It sort of sounds like a demo, actually, but one mastered to CD quality. This one also emphasizes the group's new wave influences more than the previous works. There's really no filler on here.

I remembered being really crushed last fall when I missed out on seeing them. Oh well, there's the records to make up for the lacked experience. This record makes me still interested in whatever comes next from the group. Judging by this record, they'll be around for awhile.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs have provided a sound different than other bands. This is the second, and in my opinior far superior album. Even my friend who said they hated the Yeah Yeah Yeah's heard a song and said they loved it. I definately reccomend it.

Her various styles of singing, from emotive singing on the acoustic "Warrior" to the rock bark of "Gold Lion," Karen leads the YYY's like few women other than Chrissie Hynde. But just a front woman does not a band make, and Karen's bandmates Brian Chase and Nick Zinner make enough variations of racket behind her to make "Show Your Bones" a distinctive CD.

There are also a few great songs to be found here. In addition to the aforementioned "Warrior" and "Gold Lion," there is the snazzy "Phenomena" and the catchy album closer "Turn Into." Not quite as slick as Garbage or as classic as The Pretenders' best work, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are somewhere between the two, and inching towards brilliance.

If Eye To the Telescope introduced a bold new talent, KT Tunstall's Acoustic Extravaganza confirms that the Scottish singer is no fluke. Whether stripping down tracks from her platinum debut--nominated for both a Grammy and Britain's coveted Mercury Prize--or taking on Beck's tender "Golden Age," it's all about the Voice and the Voice is good. While Telescope elicited comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Björk, in acoustic mode, Tunstall sounds more like countryman Rod Stewart back when he was fronting the Faces. She's got that soulful thing down to a science, but there's nothing affected about it, and she never pushes too hard. Ten years of busking can do that for a girl (it's how she learned to use a loop pedal to duplicate the sound of a full band). Originally only available through her website, Acoustic Extravaganza doesn't include hit singles "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree" and "Suddenly I See," the theme from The Devil Wears Prada, but then it isn't a greatest hits collection. Recorded in two days, the CD/DVD set consists primarily of non-LP material, like the angry "Ashes," plus the featurette Five Go to Skye (Making the Album). If you're like me you saw the video for "black horse and a cherry tree" on vh1 and were instantly drawn in by the "girl with guitar who can actually play it" thing. For the most part I only listen to performers who play an instrument AND write their own songs. And as far as women songwriters are concerned today, KT's the best thing since sliced bread. "Eye to the Telescope" was great. "Acoustic Extravaganza" is just as wonderful. It's even better if you continually find yourself choking on the saccharin that they coat these records with these days.

After buying the studio release 'Eye to the telescope' by KT Tunstall, I knew I was going to be biding my time until KT's next album.
I was a happy lad to find that she had released a live acoustic album.
With some new tunes and a few 'reinterpretations' as well as a nice little DVD covering the production of the album and some fun bits and pieces, this really is a top listen - and view!

I really liked Eye to the Telescope, but I play this CD non-stop. The dvd is really interesting and K.T. is a true talent. She is very real. She let's you see her without all the glitz and glamour and then gives you some of that as well. The songs are great and the opening song that earned it a explicit lyrics warning (for what?!?!) is one of the most brilliant pieces of songwriting I have ever heard. Way to go, K.T. Can't wait to hear your next recording!

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? I bought this for my newborn daughter and she has fallen asleep to this just about every night of her life. In particular, we enjoy the 2 Brazilian songs as I am Portuguese (born there, raised here) and it's immensely enjoyable hearing songs in my native tongue as well as other languages. I have gifted this to several expectant parents and everyone loves it as much as I do. I highly recommend this CD.

we used this before our first arrived (to acquaint her with the music and hopefully create a positive association for her) and played it every night as part of her bed time routine. i fell asleep to the music as well as i could hear it on the monitor from her room. i can't describe how much i loved listening to the tracks and how good i feel about the success of our nightly routine. we keep the music on the ipod for "sleepy music" while traveling in the car. my now 4 year old daughter with "request" the CD when she is tired! i often give this as a baby shower gift.

I purchased On a Starry Night before our son was born. My husband listened to it and liked it so much that he started using it at bedtime himself. When we went into the hospital to deliver, the CD came with us. All of the nurses commented on how serene the music made our room feel. We've played it for our 2 month old son since birth. My entire family falls asleep this CD each night. It works so well, I don't know what the last few tracks sound like. This will be baby shower goft to all of my friends!!!

Gentle, graceful, subtle, sweet--these aren't descriptions generally applied to the blues, but they offer a sense of Mississippi John Hurt's uniqueness and enduring legacy. Rediscovered during the 1960s folk boom after last recording in the late 1920s, Hurt cut the three albums compiled here when he was in his early 70s. His conversational phrasing sounds as natural as breathing, while his ragtime-tinged fingerpicking on acoustic guitar reveals more complexity the closer you listen. Beyond blues classics like "Candy Man" (the sly sensualist wasn't referring to lollipops), Hurt's range encompasses everything from folkish narratives ("Talking Casey," "Spike Driver Blues") to Southern spirituals ("Nearer My God to Thee," "Farther Along"). Though Hurt died in 1966, shortly after the last of these sessions, the music still sounds so fresh, you can almost hear the twinkle in his eye. --Don McLeese

This won't be a particularly helpful review because I don't "know" music. All I can say that ever since seeing The Blues Brothers, I have enjoyed listening to blues without knowing much about it. Favorites include Howlin' Wolf and Robert Johnson... and John Hurt.

He had a great voice. Cool vocals + cool lyrics = really listenable music. I am so greatful to my Yahoo!Music player for introducing me to him. :)

Classic Blues.......2006-02-28

This compilation of Mississippi John Hurt's Vanguard recordings are classics. These albums were recorded in the 60's after he was re-discovered by a music industry full swing into folk, blues, and "old timey" music. The audio quality is superb, the songs are timeless, and the voice is amazing. A must have for any serious blues fan. Robert Johnson is not the end all, be all of delta blues. Check out Mississippi John Hurt.

A review and a question.......2005-12-27

First my review:

The recorded legacy of MJH falls into roughly five categories.

(1) his early 1928 recordings on the OKEH label which comprise around 20 tracks. Although they are quite listenable and of historical interest and importance they are not the most enjoyable of his recordings. (2) recordings from 1963 that are available on the Rounder label. The sound quality of these recordings is somewhat disappointing. For that reason alone I don't listen to them much except for the fact that they were heavily relied upon by people who transcribed his songs for instructional materials. (3) The Library of Congress recordings (also from 1963). These are perhaps the best. The sound quality is excellent and there is an informality to the sessions which makes it like having MJH as a house guest for the weekend determined to play you every song he knows. (4) The (these) Vanguard Recordings, which I think were recorded between 1967 and 1969. These rival and sometimes surpass the Library of Congress Recordings as far as the material goes. There is also a palpable sadness as you can detect a man near the end of his life aware of the fact that he may very well be making his final recordings. The audio engineers did a terrible job at Vanguard for a good deal of these recordings. How can you screw up recording just one guy with a guitar? If you try hard enough you can set the levels WAY off. That is how. (5) there is also a Live MJH CD from Vanguard. It's sound quality is pretty good and it is endearing to hear MJH talk to an audience, but I find it less compelling material wise than the studio recordings.

Listening to MJH makes you want to piick up the guitar and learn to play like him. The good thing about this is that if you really want to you probably can. Many of his songs have been transcribed and broken down in intructional books and DVDs. After going through a "beginning fingerpicking" DVD by Stefan Grossman you are probably ready to take on MJH.

Go for it!

And now for my question:

It's not obvious to me from the Vanguard website whether the boxed set is actually a newer digital remaster than the original digital re-masters from the mid 80s. As far as digital remasters go those ones were a bit of a disaster. When you put the disc into your player you would have to crank the volume on your stereo. As you might expect, the careless lack of attention to levels setting in the remastering process resulted in a mushy sounding guitar. I seem to remember that was also a problem with the vinyl Vanguard LPs, particularly the first one. Hopefully these CDs really are *new* remasters because most CDs re-mastered these days are remastered quite well.

My music management software for encoding MP3s has the capability of looking up CDs in an online database. Whenever I present it with copies of the old mid 1980s vanguard CDs it recognizes them as possibly being from the boxed set, so I hesitate to spring for the "new remasters" without really knowing if they are indeed recently remastered. Perhaps someone else could clear this up.

John Hurt recordings should be a Schedule One drug.......2005-07-08

John Hurt is without a doubt my favorite bluesman. His guitar work is seamless. If you'd like to buy some blues for easier listening, get these. Blues is to often absrasive, but all of that disolves in Hurt's world. This music is terminally infectious, and will most certainly carry me to my grave.

Few would accuse Fantasia of a reluctance to abide by the wisdom that what you've got, you should flaunt, and the vocal gusto she slathers over her full-length debut gets partial credit for earning--and keeping--your attention. To a greater extent, though, the high-wattage help heaped over the Idol 3 champ and Patti LaBelle-sound-alike makes the disc dazzle. In addition to pitch-ins from Missy Elliott, who produced and co-wrote three tracks and busts out a two-snaps-up rhyme on "Selfish (I Want U 2 Myself)," Jazze Pha duets on the ultra-mod "Don't Act Right" and Jermaine Dupri wrote and produced the smolderer "Got Me Waiting." Surprisingly, though, it's not those tracks or even the Idol-propelled cover of the Gershwins' "Summertime" that will stick with listeners most. Instead, first single "Truth Is," a sweet, old-school R&B lament directed toward a lost love, and "Baby Mama," a spirited shout-out to hard-working single mothers, snare standout status with their from-the-gut authenticity. Keeping it real is what won Fantasia the hearts of millions on TV, and despite Free Yourself's likable slickness, it convinces that--hot commodity or no--she's not about to forget it. -Tammy La Gorce

This album and this artist should never be heard. There were sooo many more talented people on American Idol when she won. This album is a perfect example of that. All the studio effects in the world can't help this over-rated, so-called singer. You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s$%^.

When the three diva's Jennifer Hudson, Latoya London and Fantasia Barrino
were killing the competiion on Amercian Idol in 2004 it was almost a given that an female R&B singer would take the crown that year. Well Fantasia ended up taking the crown and lived up to her promise on her first CD. Her first single Truth Is was an excllent R&B single and the song Baby Mama was catchy and fun.

I am sorry but I could not get past the Baby Mama song. Unlike some of the other complaints it does not bother me if people are single moms or had a child out of wedlock. The whole "baby mama" stuff is just so played out and ignorant sounding. There must have been a more classy way for her to get her story across and empower moms. She has a great voice but this song was beneath her, it ruined it for me.

Although the music porition of the cd has potential, the singer has a horrible voice. I am surprised not more people have noted that she sounds like a chipmunk. Like past AI winners, this is a sore loser in the end. Bleh!

Acoustic alchemy has somehow, revitalized the concept of the guitar in the multiple possibilities the jazz as artistic movement offers, and they have vindicated in sum grade, with smart and arresting arrangements in which the creativity always shines.

His sound is original, fresh and innovative, so that's why it's very difficult to fail at the moment to acquire any one of their works.

If someone had told me a year ago that I would now be listening and singing along DAILY (mostly in the car, but sometimes in the shower--better acoustics for singing "Spirit" and "The Truth is the Light" all bluesy) to a CD from the "folk" bin, I would have called that person crazy. Now I've been to see The Wood Brothers twice and am eagerly awaiting their next CD. I am a fairly new Medeski Martin and Wood fan (Chris Wood being the bassist in both bands) and found Ways Not to Lose while perusing their website. TOTALLY different music and just as enjoyable! I like that it's just the two brothers and their two instruments (okay, and a little bit o' drums). It makes me feel all nostalgic...for what exactly, I do not know. The songs are infectious and I seem to have a different favorite every few days. I agree with what some of the other posters have said...every single one of the songs is a keeper, not one bad or even so-so one. I also recommend their Live at Tonic CD. AND I recommend whatever their next CD is because I've already heard some of their new songs at their shows and am all a-quiver with anticipation.

I got this CD after seeing and loving the duo on the Public Radio show Mountain Stage.

On the show they played as a duo and I was happy that on the record that there were no additional musicians or studio stuff.

All of the songs are great, to me they have sort of a bluesy style that has hints of Van Morrison. My favorite is Luckiest Man Alive.

Anyway my only complaint is that the quality of the recording is not that good. I have a tape of the radio show with them on it and it is actually clearer than the album. I hope at some later time they will do a live album with a really crisp sound quality that has some of these songs on it.

In the meantime enjoy this album although the bass is MUCH crisper in real life and PLEASE go see these guys live!! Totally worth seeing!!!

Bought this on recommendation from a hifi forum to which I belong. It is wonderful music and the sound quality is fantastic. Exceptional recording. Great songs with deceptively simple arrangements.

I wasn't affected one way or another on my 1st few 'spins' of this CD.
However, I kept putting it on and it has really grown on me - a sign of a strong CD...after a while it gets infectious.
Just don't know if I'd call it folk..more like modern blues. The instrumentation is sparse or make that uncluttered, but effective.

The Wood Brothers (Oliver Wood guitars, vocals, Chris Wood standing bass, vocals, and Kenny Wollesen, drums and percussion) are wonderful. They are distinctive and unusual, kind of folk, kind of blues, kind of jazz...kind of not like anything else out there. With the exception of one traditional song Angel Band, Chris and Oliver wrote all the songs and there ain't a lemon among `em. They somehow manage to be mellow and edgy at the same time, though how that is managed I have no idea. I do know I have been spinning this cd nonstop (well, truth be told, I have been iTuning it nonstop on the old `puter, but you know what I mean) since I bought it a few days ago, and have already ordered another of their cds. The bluesy smooth Chocolate On My Tongue is my favorite (at least right now) but every song is wonderful. Check `em out!
