Ancerl & Richter - Nearly the Gold Standard.......2004-04-02
The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki and Matacic (see my reviews), but they have also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in a new series called the "Gold Edition." Volume 20 of this series features Ancerl and the Czech PO with pianist Sviatoslav Richter in a 1954 mono recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. The performance is amazing, but the fact that it is in mono, and that there are so many first rate stereo choices readily available (Cliburn, Gilels, Argerich, Graffman, etc.), make this a four-star disc. However, I enojyed this mono account much more overall than Richter's stereo remake with von Karajan. The "Capriccio Italien" and the 1812 Overture, on the other hand, are in stereo from 1965, but alas no one is going to buy this CD solely based on those performances. As is, this is a solid disc, and I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from the "Gold Edition."

The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki and Matacic (see my reviews), but they've also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in the new "Gold Edition." Volume 22 of this series features Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Bartok's Violin Concerto No.2 with violinist Andre Gertler and Piano Concerto No. 3 with pianist Eva Bernathova. The performances are golden-age stereo recordings from 1965 and 1961 respectively. Of course, these are the last Concertos Bartok wrote for each instrument, so if you are looking to get a CD that features both Violin Concertos I would suggest Volume 9 from the "Isaac Stern: A Life in Music" series, and for the three Piano Concertos, the Anda/Fricsay title from the DG Originals series. However, if you just want a disc that collects two of Bartok's three finest Concertos (the other being the Concerto for Orchestra), you can't go wrong with this title. This is a remarkable disc, and I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from Karel Ancerl's "Gold Edition."

More Golden Recordings from the "Gold Edition".......2005-02-21
I would like to consider myself a serious collector of Beethoven's 5th performances. I mean what better way to judge/compare/contrast the great conductors of classical music than with the greatest symphony ever written! At this point I have more than sixty different recordings of the 5th (and have listened to nearly as many more), and this 1953 mono account by Karel Ancerl and the Czech Philharmonic is a very good reading indeed. (Of course, I didn't need this CD to tell me that he is one of the great conductors of the century as I have enjoyed and reviewed numerous other titles in Supraphon's "Karel Ancerl Gold Edition" series.) For me, the best part about this CD is the 5th's pairing with the 4th Piano Concerto (also a 1953 mono recording with pianist Josef Palenicek), the piece with which the 5th made its legendary debut in 1808 -- what a concert that must have been in Vienna! This title concludes with an outstanding 1954 performance (again in mono) of the 2nd Violin Romance with the legendary David Oistrakh. We are now more than halfway through the "Gold Edition" reissues (this is Volume 25 of an anticipated 42 titles) and I have yet to find a dud in the bunch.

Ancerl - Even More of the Gold Standard.......2005-04-28
The Supraphon label has been doing an excellent job of reissuing large parts of their back catalog over the last few years. Not only are they releasing numerous performances with the Czech Philharmonic and visiting conductors like Kletzki and Matacic (see my reviews), but they have also remastered (in 24/96) many of the recordings of conductor Karel Ancerl in a new series called the "Gold Edition." Volume 30 of this series features 20th Century works with Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Hindemith's Violin and Cello Concertos, with violinist Andre Gertler from 1968 and cellist Paul Tortelier from 1955 (in mono) respectively, and Czech composer Pavel Borkovec's Piano Concerto No. 2, performed with Antonin Jemelik from 1961. I have several recordings of the Hindemith VC (Fuchs, Oistrakh, Stern and Taschner), and the Gertler/Ancerl partnership produces glowing results equal to all of those previously mentioned performances save Oistrakh's definitive account with the composer conducting (see my review). However, this was my first encounter with both the Hindemith Cello and the Borkovec, and both are very enjoyable, modern pieces. With quality discs such as this, I look forward to purchasing (and reviewing) more titles from the "Gold Edition."

The Final Golden Ancerls.......2006-01-06
Those familiar with my reviews on Amazon will know of my love for Supraphon's "Gold Edition" Karel Ancerl CDs. Well I recently picked up the final six volumes in this collection (vols 37-42) and I have to say they are as delightful as the first 36 sets. Volume 38 features Ancerl and the Czech PO performing Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 3, with soloist Miroslav Stefek, and Piano Concertos Nos. 9 & 23, with soloists Hugo Steurer and Halina Czerny-Stefanska respectively. Both Piano Concertos were recorded in 1955, and the Horn Concerto, the disc's only stereo selection, in 1966. Ancerl was best known for the music of his native country and for showcasing the works of 20th Century composers, so it is odd to find him leading a disc of Mozart performances. All three pieces are well played and thoroughly enjoyable, but this is an example of a title in this series that will truly only appeal to Ancerl's most ardent followers, as there are so many other options in this repertoire. In all though, this title is part of a fitting to conclusion to a great series and a great conductor.
