The CD was well represented by the clips on the Amazon website and came in time for our event. We did have a problem with the charge but that was taken care of promptly. Great service.

It is an excellent collection of classical music. I would recommend this CD if you have a friend who don't like classical music, since it has the most beautiful overtures and portions of famous artists. If you are a Classic Music Savvy you probably will not be impressed by it, unless you want to play the CD as background music in a friends gathering.

Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

will probably stick to Wendy Carlos's,cheesy,runningly cheesy,blue cheese smelly,even,as it might be,still holds the original pace and campy pomp.

This is a good introduction to Tchaikovsky for the beginner that gives a broad sampling of his work. Considering the price, it's a good value if someone is just wanting to begin exploring classical music or Tchaikovsky in particular.
However, the sound quality on this albumn is quite poor and there are much higher quality Tchaikovsky recordings available.

Tchaikovsky's Greatest Pieces of Music.......2000-09-04

Here are some of Peter Ilych Tchaikovsky's greatest works. His Nutcraker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty ballets are the most famous in the repoirtaire. The Symphony No. 5 and 6 are very excellent symphonic orchestrations. However, despite all the good stuff in here from the Russian master, the performers and conductors cannot surpass the beauty and artistry that such Tchaikovsky music masters as Dorati, Markevitch and Ormandy are. So if you want quality Tchaikovsky, get those conductor renditions. However, for a Tchaikovsky beginner, these pieces will get you hooked. This is a good cd to begin with for a Tchaikovsky listener. I am a Tchaikovsky listener ever since a friend recommended his glorious works to me. I am a Mozart fan but Tchaikovsky is undoubtedly the greatest Romantic composer of all time. He combines Russian melodies (Russian dances, mazurkas, waltzes) and gives them a definite Western romantic feel. He was friends with such noted Romantic composers as Camille Saint Saens, known to create such marvelous music of the era- Carnival of the Animals (now popular through Dysney) and Danse Macabre, to name only a small portion. Tchaikovsky also adored Mozart and although he is not exactly a Classical composer, he greatly admires the beauty of Mozart's works. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky !

I think that Peter Tchaikovsky is one of the greatest composers ever. His Nutcracker suite and Capriccio Italien are wonderful pieces of music, as well as the rest of his pieces! This CD is definetly worth owning if you like classical music.

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!

This moderately priced package gives you the best of Herbert von Karajan's Tchaikovsky performances, and when he was "on" with this composer, he was very impressive indeed. These are exceptionally well played, exciting, even noble versions of the composer's three most popular symphonies, and although Karajan recorded each of them four or five times, this least expensive edition is still the one to get. --David Hurwitz

What can i say say karajan was just so over the top with tchaikovsky,in the ballet excerpts as well,to me his interpretation is to heavy handed,hard,cold but he does get good playing from the berlin philarmonic i think hes at his best with the 6th.overall i think its better than some other versions, i still think i prefure CHARLES DUTIOT AND EUGENE ORMANDY WITH THESE GREATEST OF SYMPHONYS,also the sound on these recordings from DG is poor if the sound was better i think it would have come out a little better.

I have symphonies 1 to 3 on vinyl and I bought from Amazon symphonies 4 to 6 about 4 or 5 months ago. These date from the mid 70s and I just viewed symphonies 4 to 6 on DVD via NETFLIX.

My very first classical lp was Ormandy & the Mormon Tab choir doing the 1812 overture with "Russian Church Bells" and canon. I have always loved Tchaikovsky. I have recently gotten into his solo piano music and if you have never you are really missing out--Chopin esque to say the least.

I love Beethoven for the thunder and the beauty, often at the same time. Tchaikovsky comes just about as close as anyone I have heard to matching Beethoven, though not as often. These cds are a royal trip. I went for about an hour walk the other day and had them in my mp3 player and rewound the 4th movement of symphony five 3 or 4 times! The percusion from the kettles and the brass really kick butt. Karajan brings out the beauty, the power, and the glory of Tchaikovsky. I enjoy the Abbado CSO complete symphonies, but Karajan easily tops them. Symphony 4 is almost as much fun to listen to as 5. The 3rd movement of symphony 4 features ALL of the STRING instruments being plucked, not bowed, throughout the movement and when that movement ends, the fourth movement starts with thundering power. Few can weave melodies like Tchaikovsky and few can bring down the house as he can. WOW!

These symphonies are superbly played and directed and the recording is top notch. The DVD's match them for sound, but I still favor the cd over the dvd except it is interesting to watch them performed.

This 2 fer set is a great value.

Very good, but with some disappointments.......2007-02-25

We're all familiar with the cliché about the opening of Beethoven's fifth being "fate knocking at the door." If this is true, then the opening of Tschaikovsky's fourth is "fate brought the whole SWAT team to kick the door in." The Berlin Philharmonic's gutsy brass are just perfect for this task, and prove it over and over in the course of the symphony. I would have to call the orchestra's rendition under von Karajan as "definitive" as any I've heard.
In the fifth symphony, I do have a beef with the clarinetist in the first movement. It's a simple part to play, and there's really only one big mistake you can make with it -- and this clarinetist makes it. It's fine in the soft passages, but above mezzo forte, it's overblown in the chalumeaux register to the point of distorting the timbre from clarinet into klaxon horn. That's not pleasing, and in fact, is sort of "junior high school." Other than that, though, the fifth symphony is as well-done as the fourth. Particularly pleasing are the swirling rises and falls of the lyric melodies, where von Karajan has the strings and woodwinds not just playing together, but emoting together.
It's in the sixth symphony that I'm most disappointed. In certain places in the first and fourth movements, I'm tempted to say out loud to the venerable Herr von Karajan, "Uh, Herb, don't you think that's a little fast? Like, you're taking the pathos out of the Pathetique, I think." Strangely, this seems to happen every time the main subject is a legato theme in the trombones -- so consistently that I speculate that the BPO might have a problem with short-winded trombonists.
In summation: I'm glad I own it, but there are many better recordings of the Pathetique, and better clarinetists for the fifth symphony.

Much too fastly played for a true Russian flavour........2006-05-24

The problem with Karajan is that late in his career, he seems to look for the inventive by doing some extreme things with the music he is well capable of conducting. Although these recordings of the 4-6 of the Tchaikovsky symphonies were done in the seventies, the greatly exaggerated tempi is one of those features of his style that will drive you mad as a Russian afficionado.

For the price this is going, I was convinced to have a good deal, only to be disappointed by the resultive playing. You wouldn't expect such a renowned conductor and orchestra slander through such well known classical pieces, but unfortunately, that's what you get here.

Therefore, I'd recommend taking either the Gergiev or Jansons for the 5th, while Pletnev for the 6th remains the best choice still. For the 4th, Jansons seems to be the best bet too.

But, please, do yourself a favour, and let this Russian master delight you in a better way than these recordings can offer you. You'll be thankful, I'm sure.

The best recording of von Karajan.......2006-05-08

I have always been thinking that Tchaikovsky exists between Hollywood movie composers and Broadway musical writers; after all he was a man who wrote Swan Lake, Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty.
To me his position was not on serious side of vast universe of classical music.

Not until I heard the Path?tique symphony recorded by Karajan today.

My younger brother and I were sitting with my parents in our living room watching Toshiba black & white TV set when Herbert von Karajan first visited Japan to conduct NHK Symphony Orchestra in 1950s.
They were playing Beethoven 5th, but I was too small, five or six years old then to appreciate the music.
However, I clearly remember the profound silence followed the last coda of symphony.
I suspect my mother was crying. That was how we found the German conductor.

In college, I listened to Furtwangler.
I thought Karajan was lightweight in comparison with his great predecessor.
Especially for Beethoven, his interpretations were too modern and international, sans German spirituality.

But this performance of Path?tique has changed my perception of Karajan entirely.
The energy and passion is incredible, it equals to that of Eroica symphony recorded by Furtwangler in 1944.

Simply amazing!

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

There's something for every Tchaikovsky lover on this disc. From Swan Lake to Onegin, many of Tchaikovsky's most-known melodies are on this disc. I'd have preferred more than an excerpt of the first movement of Piano Concerto No. 1, but this disc is a great introduction to Tchaikovsky's works.

Tchaikovsky without excess Romantic expression or longing.......2005-11-12

George Szell (1897-1970) was not knowen for excess Romantic expression or longing. Some of his recordings could be cold perfection, icy, yet wonders of precision and timing. In this way he was like Fritz Reiner (1888-1963), who recorded with the Chicago Symphony for RCA. Szell recorded mostly for Columbia with the Cleveland Orchestra (now Sony Classical) in the 1960s, and also for EMI, Decca, and Philips in Cleveland, Vienna, Amsterdam, and London.

Szell's Tchaikovsky 5 is not unyielding or wooden, and he does not rush tempos. I like this recording very much, but give it only 4 stars because Szell does not take the extra time, or give the music the fully Romanticized feeling many great conductors did: Ormandy (Sony), Bernstein/New York (Sony); Monteux/Boston (RCA) for example. The Cleveland Orchestra plays very well, and the precision of their ensemble may be among the best to date, but there is something missing: the Romantic feeling, pathos, angst which is so important in Tchaikovsky's music. One small imperfection: a woodwind player (clarinet?) actually squeaks (!) in the Allegro of IV, during an important solo passage. I'm surprised this wasn't retaped and corrected, as Szell was always particular about such things, more than some conductors from what I've read.

If you like Tchaikovsky with less excess Romantic expression or longing, Szell's recording is for you. If you want it more Romantic, look elsewhere.

Szell/Cleveland Is the Definative American Orchestra.......2004-07-27

Tchaikovsky's music is unmistakablely Russian in tone, with towering trademark unison string melodies and dramatic brass/wind lines. I normally find it unappealing to listen to North American orchestras play his music, but the great Szell/Cleveland combo never fails to draw me. The opening fate-call melody, which would become a deep recurring motif, as played here really can send shivers down your spine. Throughout the whole recording, Szell seems in control and shows great understanding to Tchaikovsky's score. Indeed one of the reference performances of this work. This particular CBS reissue is competent in sound as well.

Outstanding.......2003-08-23

My first purchase of a classical music piece was this recording on a Columbia Odyssey vinyl pressing in 1978. My only interest in classical music at the time (just out of high school) was to try to figure out why Stereo Review actually spent time reviewing that "boring" music, ... I'm not sure I had even heard of Tchaikovsky before that. I could not have made better choice. The music was incredibly powerful and incredibly moving. It was at that point I learned just what classical music could be even to someone with no formal training or musical ability to speak of.

Thus inspired, I went out and bought an audiophile recording of the 5th, expecting it to be even better. (The Odyssey pressing had audible tape hiss.) It was at *that* point when I realized how much difference the particular conductor/performance makes! The music seemed completely lifeless in comparison. It hardly seemed to be the same work. Since then I have owned several recordings of this piece, and none have come close to the Szell performance. It is simply that good. Maybe it is because first love is always the sweetest, but the other reviewers seem to agree with me.

The good news is that the CD release (which I just realized existed only a few weeks ago) has been fully remastered. The tape hiss, while still there, is much less noticable than I recalled. The dynamics are still there, despite the age of the recording. The *music* is still there, in all its glory. And it is as moving to this middle aged man as it was to the young kid. Highly recommended.

The BEST recording. Period........2000-09-10

Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra have made the definative recording of Tchaikovsky's Fifth. This was the first version I ever listened to, and all other recordings pale in comparrison. This recording is over 40 years old, and it has stood the test of time well. Although I lack the sophisticaction to disect this piece, I know this is a symphony with power behind it. The Allegro vivace to my ears can only be played as on this disc - rapidly. If it is performed too slow, it sounds awful (truely!)I am a fan and admierer of Karajan, and his Fifth recordings are good, but nothing matches Szell for his Fifth's pure power and magnificance. Whenever I'm in a funk, this recording never fails to bring me out of it.

Difficult to beat the Clevelanders at the top of their game.......1999-03-07

It is difficult to believe that this recording was put on vinyl 40 years ago. It has stood the test of time exceptionally well. The playing cannot be faulted in any sense as the iron will of Dr. Szell is apparent from the opening bars. The closing movement puts the lie to the long-held view that George was an antiseptic and sterile conductor incapable of whipping his charges into an emotional frenzy. Needless to say, the x-ray view of the score serves the interpretation well. There is only one other recording (as yet unreleased by RCA) that matches this kind of glorious reading...Seiji Ozawa and the Chicago Symphony. Barring the release of that gem, this is the recording of the Fifth to have.

Simply great Sibelius.......2006-05-15

At less than 20GBP, this set offers a most excellent initiation to the world of Johan Sibelius s'masterly work. A nice collection, that includes the symphonies (1--7) with important compositions such as the ever fascinating Kulervo and myriads of "TonePoems". The L.S.O play together with dedication, the sound and direction by sir Colin Davis increase the impression of greatness in the music. I was a little skeptical of the new Davis Kulervo "live", of which I prefer this one on rca, but been of course amazed by the L.S.O.Live powerful versions of symphonies 3 & 7. Otherwise, I generally love this uniformly excellent set, even more so than the earlier cycle in Boston of which I still like, above all, symphonies 5&6. Here, with this rca set, the "highlights" are to be found in symphonies 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6, as well as in a bracing and quite dramatic Kulervo. Among the poems, En Saga and Pohjola really shine along with a wonderful Suite Karelia. Of course everything is not perfection, but who will pretend to be anyway? I recommend highly this important box set, even more than the competitive 5CD Naxos however very good it is. Davis is a master Sibelian, no doubt about that. Kind regards. m.vuriling

Splendid Performances from LSO and Sir Colin Davis.......2004-12-31

This 7 CD set includes all of Sir Colin Davis' second Sibelius symphony cycle recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra in the 1990's, along with almost all of Sibelius' other major orchestral works, most notably his tone poems (Some of these were recorded as recently as 2000 or 2001.). These are impressive, vibrant performances replete with exquisite playing by the London Symphony Orchestra. Critics have praised Davis' first Sibelius symphony cycle with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as among the best; without question, his second symphony cycle is not only just as fine, but comes with better quality digital sound (However, with respect to sound, the best Sibelius symphony cycle that he's recorded may be the recent one with the LSO Live CD label.). I especially enjoyed the recordings of Sibelius' 2nd, 5th and 7th symphonies, and the tone poem En Saga, but all of Sibelius' works in this CD set are quite fine. Those interested in hearing music made by Sir Colin Davis, widely regarded as our foremost interpreter of Sibelius, with one of the world's greatest orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra, will not be disappointed with this CD set.
