5 Stars. EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE........2003-05-19
I think this is an essential CD for classical music aficionados, the performances are strong and compelling, with plenty of momentum.
The program is very appealing and particularly the "World Premiere" recording of F.T.Schubert's transcription of Mozart's "Prague" Symphony is very exciting.
It is of historical value to perform and record unknown compositions of renowned composers, so congratulations to the musicians of the Wiener Schubert Ensemble for choosing to include this rare composition on the CD.
The interpretation of Schubert's Piano Quartet (Rondo Concertante) is performed very musically with the characteristic "Viennese" sound. Here I especially appreciate the warm, firm tone of the excellent pianist Charles Cocchia accompanied by the wonderful string players who are members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Rondo for piano duo in D major, D. 608 (Op. posth. 138) and the 2 Marches Caractéristiques D. 968b (D. 886) (Op. posth. 121) are performed by the pianoduo Charles Cocchia and Miho Fujiwara with a fine tonal and dynamic range which allows intimacy as well as a wide palette of color and dynamic nuance.
In fact, of all ensemble playing, that of two pianists playing together is the most difficult to coordinate because of the nature of the instrument, where the attack leaves no space for imprecision. These two pianists seem to anticipate every musical thought and synchronize wonderfully. They really possess first-class technical preparation and musical sensitivity.
In addition to its musical and technical virtues, this CD includes an enlightening and interesting set of notes including excerpts of a letter written by Schubert's brother with fascinating details regarding the String Quintet transcription.
Excellent recording, I unquestionably rate this CD 5 stars.
