Further proof that the 15-year-old male is the nexus of contemporary popular entertainment, this anthology of music from and "inspired by" the sequel to the earth-conquering Halo saga also showcases how capably the video game industry can trump even Hollywood's vaunted production values. The original synth-heavy underscore by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori is filled with enough brooding, mock-Goth atmospherics, and pulsing exotica of indeterminate ethnicity to give the Hans Zimmer stable a run for their money, while a slate of (mostly) worthy rock star guest turns give it a welcome edge. Legendary axe-slinger Steve Vai's sinewy riffing punches up the reworked main theme and "Never Surrender," while alt.metal contenders Breaking Benjamin serve up the suitably dramatic inspired-by cut "Blow Me Away." But it's Incubus' four-part "Odyssey" suite that's the centerpiece, bridging 1970s prog and modern rock with its moody aura and evocative musical dramatics. --Jerry McCulley

BUY! BUY! BUY!.......2007-03-05
This CD stayed in my truck's CD player for months before getting tired of it. Enough said.
Great game - great music.......2007-01-10
My son wanted this Cd. I had never sat long enough to listen to the music when he played Halo, so I didn't have a clue what I was buying. He let me listen to some of the tracks once it arrived and I had to "borrow" it from him so I could download the cd onto my pc. Needless to say I bought volume 2 and the original Halo soundtrack cd as well. They may belong to my son, but I love these cds too!
Hug your pillows girls.......2006-08-06
THe only reason I am writing anything about this album is because it contains the Odyssey by Incubus, and its probably some of their best work and will go down as their most unnoticed. While the rest of your nerds are huggin your pillows at night thinking about your video games and the "gnarly instrumentals" on this album you sit there and bash Incubus' work. The first track by them, Follow, is not all that great however it was re-released on an additional cd with their Alive at Red Rocks DVD and it sounds sooooooo much better on that cd (with some real lyrics) But after listening to the Odyssey I was really hoping this to be a new direction for Incubus, a more proggressive/conceptual sound. Whether this is the direction they go on with their new album is yet to be heard. Its a shame that this work will go unnoticed, and the only reason it will be that way because a bunch of losers decide to try and impress people with (what they think) is a sense of music just because its of a classical nature. Yes, the rest of the music on the album is amazing, and I give big ups to its composition, but come on people, show some love to good music when its presented to your faces.
best video game soundtrack ever........2006-08-03
i understand that many people are a bit angry with breaking benjamin and hoobastank being in here. i'm not particularly happy myself with the last track, but i think contemporary music is appropriate here, albeit lyrics may not be the greatest form of expressing the mysterious feeling behind everything. i think o'donnel and salvatori have what it takes to compose a score of music, but it's not a score, it's a soundtrack. i found that if you don't like them you can just skip them. the second to last track is a great way to end the soundtrack.
classical music listeners stop complaining.......2006-05-10
The worst part of this album was songs with lyrics (breaking benjamin, techno, hoobastank)...i dont understand then why people are upset with the incubus - follow has one word the whole song (two if you count "yeah") and their instrumental songs are brilliant, floyd-esque at times. for those of you reading others criticizing this album, ignore them, ignore the three bad songs on this album, and purchase it and enjoy it.

lovely.......2004-02-17
Gordon Bok, Ann Mayo Muir and Ed Trickett all have had successful individual careers (especially Bok, who is perhaps New England's foremost regional singer/storyteller/guitarist), but they have been best known as this collective for many years. Trickett plays acoustic guitar and hammered dulcimer and Bok a deep-throated twelve-string, and all have strong and complementary singing voices. The material is core "gentle folk music," with input from both traditional and contemporary original sources (e.g., Bok, David Mallett, Eric Bogle & Archie Fisher). This is truly lovely stuff, and heartily recommended to anyone for those times by the fireplace on a Sunday winter's morning, cup of coffee in hand.
A Folk Album You Should Own.......2003-07-17
Bok, Muir & Trickett is a continuation of Peter, Paul & Mary. They sang in close harmony and their songs are real folk classics. If you like the folk-style of Peter, Paul & Mary, you will surely like this folk group.
A wonderful CD.......1999-09-13
Bok, Muir, and Trickett are a great group, and this is a great compilation. The final trawl and the Ways of Man are amazing, and the others are all great too. Get it!
GLORIOUS MUSIC!!!.......1998-09-15
Since I first heard this group on A Prairie Home Companion many years ago I was hooked. This CD has no bad tracks. Every song is a jewel and I never get tired of listening to it. The voices of this trio blend so beautifully together. Gordon Bok has a voice that is so perfect. It is hard to decide which is better - him alone or with Muir and Trickett. I recommend this CD to everybody, young or old.

Album Description
Forty years after his death, Lead Belly's songs and style have continued to influence folk, blues, and rock artists including Neil Young, William Styron, Ben Harper, Keb' Mo, Dionne Farris, and the late Kurt Cobain (Nirvana). Between 1941 and 1947 Lead Belly recorded some of his best music in Moses Asch's tiny New York studio. The only surviving Asch masters of Lead Belly are now part of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. For the first time in almost 50 years these original acetates have been carefully remastered and newly annotated. 34 tracks, including Irene, Where Did You Sleep Last Night, In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down, and Rock Island Line. Originally released as a tribute to Lead Belly after his death in 1948, this reissue includes many out-takes and previously unreleased and alternate versions. Extensive notes include Lead Belly's own song commentary. Annotated by Jeff Place. Compiled by Jeff Place, Anthony Seeger and Kip Lornell. "The soul expressed! is full-fledged and sublime." -New England Folk Almanac
Customer Reviews:
NOT A GOOD RECORDING.......2007-01-05
I loved the Lusty, vibrant Leadbelly on my old LP. Man, his voice and that great 12-string guitar just filled the room. But this cd remastering is a flunk, sounds like a whine in an adjoining room. This is not the first disappointing cd remastering I've bought on line. But I have some great ones as well. Seems like the poor ones are a product of low remastering standards. I'm gonna stick to buying in a store.
The roots of quite a lot..........2003-07-21
Lead Belly is one of the best in American music - he's right up there with Woody Guthrie (if not above him, which is more than arguable) in influence and importance for the formation of 20th century music. Lead Belly (Huddie Ledbetter) was supposedly "discovered" and recorded in prison by John Lomax (the recordings on this CD were recorded by Moses Asch in the 1940s). He also is said to have sung his way into being pardoned (during his second term in prison after being convicted of murder) by the then governor of Texas. He never became a star, but many of his songs have been re-recorded by popular artists (probably the best-known examples are the covers of "Goodnight, Irene" by the Weavers and "Midnight Special" by Credence Clearwater Revival).
This collection is a great starting point for Lead Belly's music. It includes some of his most memorable songs: "Irene", "Grey Goose", "Cotton Fields", "Sylvie", "Rock Island Line", "Green Corn". The recording quality is great considering the age of the recordings. Included are plenty of Lead Belly playing his legendary 12-string guitar along with some a capella tracks. The CD booklet has a good biography and extensive track notes, along with quotes from Lead Belly himself about selected songs. If you're curious about Lead Belly this CD is a great introduction to his music. If you want more, this series has 2 additional excellent volumes.
Incredibly Influential.......2003-04-15
As with most pre-rock'n'roll folk and blues music deciding which Leadbelly CD to pick up is not an easy task. There are several Leadbelly compilations out there and almost all of them omit essential songs. That is why, taking into consideration the importance of this man's music, I suggest giving the old visa card a little work-out and springing for both this and Bourgeois Blues: Leadbelly Legacy, Vol. 2.
Leadbelly is among the top three most influential musicains of the 20th Century. A distinction he shares with Son House and Robert Johnson (Son House: The Original Delta Blues and The Complete Robert Johnson are both essential cds). The seeds that Mr. Ledbetter planted when he recorded his music went on to sprout plants in the fields of popular music from (probably) every country on earth. You know the story: From blues came rock'n'roll and jazz.
A friend once said to me, "Good artists borrow ideas, great artists steal them." This is particularly true concerning the relationship between Leadbelly and the other Led. Don't get me wrong. Zeppelin were pioneering geniuses in their own right. But little did I know that the Led Zeppelin records that I blasted full volume deep into my profoundly stoned highschool cranium were really written in large part by dirt poor black men way before World War Two. The song 'Black Betty' by Ram Jam which recently enjoyed some nostalgic exposure through the Blow Soundtrack (a fine collection) was originally a Leadbelly tune. And it may well have been Leadbelly's ghost that killed John Bonham and Hendrix and Morrison and Joplin and Brian Jones, seeking revenge for royalties never paid. Cobain, too.
lead.......2003-03-04
This is an essential album to any collection. Its a bit hard to listen to stait through though.
leadbelly is the daddy mac.......2002-08-06
absolutely amazing. especially the haunting "where did you sleep last night?", the field holler "pick a bale o cotton", Midnight Special, Leaving Blues, the funky Rock Island Line an the saddest song ever "Childrens blues" about his mother dying. if you dig Leadbelly check out Missippi John Hurt, Blind Boy Fuller,Sleepy John Estes, Reverend Gary Davies and early Rory Gallagher.

The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04
Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.
Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22
Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.
A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.
For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22
Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.
A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12
The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

When talking about old-time music, Tommy Jarrell is the real McCoy. Whereas many "old-time" musicians, especially those who had or sought recording careers, updated, polished, and modernized the traditional styles of the mid-Atlantic mountain regions, Jarrell steadfastly refused to alter the fiddle techniques taught to him by his father Ben and other local legends of the Virginia-Carolina border. Thus Jarrell's fiddling has a raw and abrasive sound, although his technique is anything but--it is refined and complex, often mixing in plucked accents with his advanced bowing technique. Like the style of playing, the repertoire mostly dates back to the mid-19th century. Although the 15 songs here are fiddle solos, Jarrell accompanies himself with delightfully offhanded singing and introduces many of the songs with facts about their histories and the tunings he uses. This fascinating record serves as an enjoyable listen as well as a history lesson and an instrumental instruction course. --Marc Greilsamer

Old Time Fiddle Master.......2006-08-01
Tommy Jarrell has been a source of inspiration for old time fiddlers for generations. These CD collections demonstrate why his heartfelt dedication to his music is so infectuous. These tunes are classics.
It don't git no better'n this!!!.......2001-12-28
OldTime music at its best! A mini-biography of Tommy Jarrell and how he aquired the tunes on this CD. A short story is told before each tune explaining the key of his fiddle and from where he learned the tune. The booklet tells about the tune as well. Highly recommended for the OldTime music player and/or historian!
Ole time fiddle playing doesn't get any better than this!.......1999-12-17
Listening to Tommy Jarrell will take you back to the way real mountain musicians sounded while playing on their front porch. I've had the CD for 4 days and have almost wore it out. If you love ole time mountain music, BUY IT!

Still sounding fresh with perhaps their BEST work to date!.......2002-10-22
I have many JE albums. "Christian Songs" and "Robot Rock" used to be my favorites. This album combines the best elements from both of those albums, yet still has a new sound. Worry not, the electronic pulses, beeps, and beats are there, but this time Ronnie Martin varies his vocal technique a bit, singing lower octaves, and even using vocal distortion! If you're new to the scene of JE, think "Anything Box" or "Erasure." Interesting to note that the album uses no sequencers or drum machines, just live analog devices at Ronnie's fingertips. What a great work! Personal faves: "And Without Help We Parish," "A New Pirate Traditional," and, of course, "We Are Rock!"
JE.......2002-05-31
This band is AWESOME and the cd is really cool, I just bought the cd this week and have been listening to it nonstop since then. The lyrics on a couple of the songs are really wierd though, its kind of like a fairy tale book was thrown into a blender and pasted on the lyrics booklet, kind of like a word collage, Its a really COOL word collage. My favorite songs are New Pirate Traditional, We are Rock, and The good will not be cloned. They're about the only three that actually make sense. The cd is a work of modern art.
The Legacy Begins..........2002-05-09
Joy Electric's growth as a group has gone through many evolutions and albums, but always sticks to the core pop synth sound. Legacy Vol. 1: The White Songbook is the first of an upcoming "Legacy" series of albums. The new album is an excellent one, with some of the same old sounds and some new ones. The opening track is a melancholy melody, with a narrator telling a story that seems to be a complex fairy tale, but when you look at the lyrics, it makes little sense and is slightly confusing. The tracks vary from the slower, darker tune "And Without Help We Perish" to the "punk without guitar" song "A New Pirate Traditional." I love his darker stuff, and this album has a little more of that than his previous ones. The only one that comes close with the slower, brooding tracks is Robot Rock. Those songs show he's not just a bubblegum pop guy.
The numerous tracks showcase Ronnie Martin's ability and talent for songwriting, music arrangement and composing the tracks. His songs go beyond simple pop melodies, easy to see after hearing the songs a couple times and reading the lyrics. There is a deeper meaning to them, although the exact meaning is rather debatable and lets the listener come up with their own conclusions. One of the best Joy Electric albums, it's a must have for any previous fan and anyone wanting to expand their collection to include an insightful, multi-faceted work.
Ronnie kills the competition with his tetris soundtrack.......2002-04-24
This album is phenomenal. I have been following JE's discography with bemusement for the past several years, but i never really considered myself a fan. My sister has "Robot Rock" and "Christian Songs" and I found the music interesting, but not something I'd ever consider buying; the whole "electronica" thing just really isn't my cup of tea; i'm a fan of acts like ZAO, Simon & Garfunkel, and Marilyn Manson. But there was always something about JE's music that was better than other electronic stuff.
When my roommate got the "Unelectric" album, i found that JE is a whole lot more than just the novelty act I had always tagged them as. Hearing the songs on "real" instruments (albeit synthesized strings and drums...) I realized that the songs themselves were incredibly structured. With my newfound respect for JE's music, I went back and listened to my sister's JE albums and found them to be really good...the whole Nintendo feel of the synthesizers even grew on me.
When this album came out I downloaded two of the songs and was blown away. I figured if those were the only two songs that were any good on the album, then it would still be worth the purchase. There is not a single bum song on the album. Not only that, but every song on here is completely different and is wonderfully done. It's got haunting songs ("Shepherds of the Northern Pastures," "And Without Help We Perish"), it's got nostalgic songs ("Unicornicopia," "Sing Once for Me") and it's got balls-to-the-walls rockers ("We are Rock," "New Pirate Traditional"). An incredible album and the purely synthesized instrumentation only adds to the atmosphere. By far JE's best album and my favorite album of 2001.
Masterfully done Concept Album.......2002-02-10
Ronnie Martin, one of the most dedicated, hardest working, and talented musicians I have ever come to know. His beats may seem simplistic but if you only knew how hard he works, staying up night after night to create every single bit of music you hear on all of his cd's. Using only his synthesizer, he made ALL the music from just one machine and no real instruments. His deep, emotional, and even depressing lyrics are hidden behind music that may seem simplistic or "For the kiddies" I admit to raising an eyebrow at some of his earlier work, some compare it to "video game music" and at times I won't disagree with it. I was looking forward to this release and was not dissapointed.
Ronnie has taken his music to a whole nother level. Its not only melodically addictive, but is so richly layered with melody upon melody upon sound effects. Gone is the "kiddish" sound for a whole mature world of electronic music. There are so many surprises in this record, from the instrumental "Chapter beginnings" to the uptempo tracks "We are Rock" and "The Good will not be cloned" The way Ronnie stretches his voice and his talent will astonish you. Who knew JE could rock this hard? His melodies are beautiful, his fairy tale like lyrics are soothing. He also hits on more personal feelings of the fear of rejection. This record tells the story of a man who looks back on his life and wonders what good he has done.
Ronnie wants these series of records to be HIS Legacy. I hope that when he looks back on his life, he will see that he left behind wonderful music that DID touch the lives of some. I encourage Ronnie to continue his work and to know that he IS appreciated. This record is truly a masterpiece and should not be missed.

Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton brought enough "heat" and daring innovation to his playing that inspired a generation of "Ax-Men" to follow for years to come... This CD only completes 1/2 the collection, you have to include Modern Legacy, Vol. 2: Blues Guitar Magic CD to see where I am coming from, do you feel the blues yet?
For any blues music lover, the Modern Legacy, Vol. 1 CD is a must have!

Compared to other periods in the careers of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Thelonious Monk, the music captured on The Prestige Legacy Volume 1 is by far less famous. That this is so makes this collection--subtitled "The High Priests" in reference to the near-saintly stature of the CD's four cornerstone artists--all the more valuable. Here you find Rollins playing liquidly around the melody of "Mambo Bounce" and Miles posing a challenge to bebop with his measured, midrange unflappability. Monk sounds unmistakable here, teetering, wobbling, swinging off-centeredly. Coltrane's a jazz surgeon in residence, delving to uncharted depths as he races through and around chords with steely aplomb. The music comes from Prestige Records's heyday, ranging from Miles's 1951 "Down" with John Lewis on piano to Coltrane's 1958 "You Say You Care" (from Soultrane). In between are pivotal Monk turnouts (particularly his self-titled 1952 album's "Bemsha Swing"), and Rollins slowing things down to pirouette around the melody on 1956's "Valse Hot" (from Sonny Rollins Plus 4). So if it's the more recognizable sessions from these "high priests" that you know best, dig into their history with this stellar anthology. --Andrew Bartlett

N.W.A........2007-01-19
These CD's were dope. I listen to it during a long drive. It's like a mix tape. NWA helped start the so called 'gangsta rap' (not my term).
Great Compilation of songs, but why put edited versions on an explicit compilation........2006-07-12
The N.W.A. Legacy volume 1 has absolutely amazing songs such as Dr. Dre's Keep Their Heads Ringin', The D.O.C's No One Can Do it Better, Daz's In California, and many more. But the disapointing part of this compilation was the It was a Good Day remix and the Westsyde Radio Megamix, for one reason because it was edited.
The legacy includes MC's from the Westside Connection, Snoop Doggy Dog, members from N.W.A (official and unofficial), and a couple more. The songs on this compilation are worth the time listening to except a couple. The best songs on the first disc include Eazy's Boyz-N-Tha-Hood remix, the Westside Connection's Bow Down, and N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton. The best songs on the second disc include Dre's Keep Their Heads Ringin, Daz's In California, and N.W.A.'s F*** the Police. The songs that are not good at all that would've been good are the Westsyde Radio Megamix, and the It Was a Good Day remix. These aren't good songs because they are edited versions (I am going to talk about the random edited tracks on the explicit cd).
The songs are absolutely amazing, but they edit Ice Cube's It Was a Good Day remix and the Westsyde Radio Megamix on an explicit cd. It is ok to have an edited version of explicit lyrics but it is ridiculous if you put edited tracks on an explicit version of a cd. And how do you edit a friggen Eazy-E song when he is one of the most violent and vulger rappers ever (it's not a bad thing). The It Was a Good Day remix had potential to be great due to the change of the beat (the original beat was a lot better), but they again randomly edited it. Basically what I'm saying the producers shouldn't have edited random tracks on this compilation.
The legacy is still worth buying because it has some rare and great tracks.

1. Boyz-N-Tha-Hood (Remix.)
2. Straight Outta Compton.
3. Bow Down.
4. Westside Slaughterhouse.

5. The Last Song.

1. Keep Their Heads Ringin.

3. Boyz-N-Tha-Hood (Remix).
4. Straight Outta Compton.

One of three the best!.......2003-10-24
This CD is one of three the best Chet's last rerordings - including "The Last Great Concert"-2CD and "Chet Baker In Tokyo"-2CD. A truly masterpiece! I have about 20 recordings of Chet and these one with the beautifuly sounded German DNR Big Band is the most wonderful! A pure jazz!
Great performance!.......2000-09-07
Chet infuses warmth & glowing melodic phrases throughout this concert, on his flugelhorn. His gift of making his instrument tastefully sing to reach your heart, is hard to beat. At times he sounds a bit winded, but the NDR Big Band backs him up nicely. Great arrangements and performance by the band & Mr. Baker!
