Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

Customer Reviews:
a response to an earlier review by eerievonevil.......2007-07-11
OK, First i would like to say that from what I have heard I like the album. yes Billy's voice does sound different in ways and from what I have heard of the album it doesn't seem to fit in some of the songs. That being said I have yet to get the album so my 4 stars is going on what I have heard so far but that could change once I get the album and hear it all the way through....I have responses to eerievonevil's review...here are some of the things you said....
I'd say the better buy of today is Bad Religion's new album, "New Maps Of Hell", which is less "See the light" and more of what the world really needs: "TRUTH".
--TRUTH? How do you define truth??? I'm just wondering if you subscribe to the worldview that all truth is relative and that what is true for you may not be true for me. If you do believe that all truth is relative (which in itself is an absolute truth statement, coincidentally contardicting the foundation of relativism) then you have no right to say that Bad religion's albums preach are any more "true" than what Billy thinks....
then you said this: I am perfectly ok with a human being believing what they want to believe, but it REALLY hurts the music when you make the music reflect your personal views only.
--Don't you think Bad religion's albums reflect only their personal views and how they disagree with other views, especially religious ones??? I don't think that him expressing his views is what bothers you. It seems that it bothers you only because you don't hold the same views, which is totally cool. If Billy held the same views as you and was writing about them I don't think you would have a problem. Artists write about their views and opinions, every single one of them. So your argument doesn't make much sense to me. Also why would Billy write about things he doesn't believe in at all??? That would seem pretty ingenuine
Anyway, this wasn't a personal attack and I hope it didn't seem that way. I was just curious as to why you said those things cuz your support didnt seem to back up any of your arguments. I would love to talk more about this if you feel up to it. take care
RAWK.......2007-07-11
I would say that anyone who makes a retarded statement like "all the songs sound the same" should probably take some rusty scissors and cut off their ears, obviously they don't work or you are just not using them. There is some wildly different and adventurous rock on this record. Straight-ahead rock, anthemic material, fuzzed-out ballad, skullcrushing monster riffage, and just plain wacked, angular stuff that takes a hard lean toward unabashed "prog" (I hate that term, but hopefully you understand...)...
In other words, the kind of rock adventurism that made SP great is fully on display here.
It seems to me that the history of SP shows their leap to "classic" greatness occuring with the release of Siamese Dream. Remember, MCIS was a massive extension of that success, but SD was the initial explosion, a truly timeless, classic album, transcending the potential of Gish by a quantum leap.
I mention this because it is very important to consider that Siamese Dream was essentially created by only three people: Billy Corgan, Jimmy Chamberlin...and Butch Vig. If people want to claim that Zeitgeist is not a "real" Pumpkins record, then by that logic we must say that Siamese Dream was not a real Pumpkins record. I don't see how anyone could swallow such BS. Siamese Dream defined the Smashing Pumpkins. And it was a Billy Corgan/Jimmy Chamberlin project! Just like Zeitgeist! No James! No D'Arcy!
Smashing Pumpkins is Billy's band. And I think for the real fans (you know who you are), it's more about a certain type of musical energy or feeling, regardless of the lineup. I will say, though, that the Billy/Jimmy musical axis is the core of the band's best output. Long live BC/JC.
Love it the Pumpkins are back!!.......2007-07-11
I have listened to this album now about 5 times and I have to say that I like it. Its no Siamese Dream but its a good album. There are more good songs on this than bad. I have been a Pumpkins fan for a long time and the seven year wait was well worth it. The Pumpkins are back. My favorite song on the album right now has to be 7 shades of black. Love it!
Good album if you actually LISTEN to it.......2007-07-11
I'm not going to pretend that this album is as good as Mellon Collie, and maybe most SP fans will not like it as much as Siamese Dream (an album which seems to hold a special significance for people) or even Machina (at least for me), but it's still a really good album. Yes, there is a political vibe to some of it, but don't let these critics fool you, it's not Billy telling you what to think of anything. Listen to "United States" and you'll see it's more about the conflicted feelings we all have about the time we are in and the wanting to do SOMETHING besides ignore it all. Still, the political stuff is nowhere near as heavy handed as some have suggested. Now, there IS less of the melodic-type stuff on here - it's pretty much limited to "Neverlost" (which is a great song, btw), but there are only about 2 or 3 tracks I don't see growing on me (the last 2 particularly). And yes, it does feel a little weird knowing that James and D'Arcy aren't there, but if (like me) you were able to enjoy "Adore" without Jimmy then I'm sure you'll be fine with this too. Bottom line: If you ever liked Smashing Pumpkins and their music was more to you than just another musical product, then you will dig this enough.
Separation of Music and Politics.......2007-07-11
I hear again and again about how church and state should be seperated. Then I look at a dollar and realize that this country was built "One Nation Under God" before the year 2000. I realize that musicians are allowed to speak their minds, especially American musicians, but must they all say the same thing, and lean in the same direction (left)? It's a boring album with average riffs and plunky choruses and lazy effort by a once great band, but it's not really the same band. This might as well be Zwan; I mean, why not? Actually, I shouldn't say that about Zwan, which was a good album. In this venture, Corgan's eyes are closed and as narrowed as the thing in which he's digusted by - making the music as lean and empty as what he's opposed to. Which makes sense... those who preach against preaching are still preaching. A million musicans all saying the same exact thing in different words, different tunes, different riffs, all believing their being unique and/or "controversial", when, in fact, the people who pay them to make their music agree 100% with their politics. Controversial, indeed. More like mainstream. At this point, anti-American rock is mainstream, and as common as it gets. Too bad those musicians, who one minute claim they write music for the world and not just for America, are the same ones who only see things bad as coming from one place, one country, the same country they can buy and live in their mansions, their nice cars, and their pre-torn blue jeans. These rockers never seem mad at car-bombers in Israel; only at the American military for trying to stop them somewhere else. I'm amazed at how we only see the "filthy rich" as being old oil tycoons, and not rockers like Corgan who have traded in their creativity for a platform and/or soap box (which, I admit, I'm doing right now). Well I'm tired of it. I'll never buy this album (which I heard in its entirety at a record store) for the same reason most of you wouldn't go to church... one-sidedness just doesn't interest me.

The End of the Big Voice?.......2007-04-16
This CD, which is truly fine overall, reminds me of Marilyn Horne's lament that we have probably seen the end of the big voice and it makes me sad. I agree with the reviewer who refers to "microphonies". And more justice could be done to Bjorling's voice with a better transfer. But at some point, music becomes a matter of taste and I prefers singers who have the instrument and the support and the training, whether formal or not, to just let fly and take a chance on making a mistake. Domingo can be wonderful and so can his musicianship but he tends to be so stiff. I have to wonder at the virulence and asperity with which some people go after Pavarotti. It's true that late in his career he made some questionable recordings but the answer to that is simple: don't buy them. At his best, he belongs for all time in the top echelon of tenors. I love this CD and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys great (big) voices.
Fla Gator Lady.......2007-01-12
Highly recommend this CD with these beloved arias of the greatest tenors in opera. I have owned this CD for a couple of years and purchased another for a friend who always requests that I play it ... perfect for listening in the car, dinner, bridge games, relaxation ... just so perfect. You won't be disappointed in this one.
20 Great Tenor Arias.......2007-01-09
A great disc, combination of the greatest tenors of the 20th century and some of the most beautiful music ever written in any century,a must addition to any opera lovers collection.
Plesantly surprised..........2006-01-14
I don't remember how I found this CD the other day surfing through the "Amazon" such as it is, but I did. I listened to a few clips provided & on the strength of that, I purchased this CD.
First it is a great buy. A booklet with pictures of each tenor, a small bio, the year recorded and TRANSLATIONS of each aria are provided. This is really nice. It seems more & more that translations are being left out. Being a former opera singer, I may know most of the words, but sometimes it's just nice to read along (sometimes it's just nice to listen too).
Being on the Decca label, there is admittedly quite a few Pavarotti selections. Out of 20 selections, he has 6 of them. But I love Pavarotti, so this is no problem for me. These are all early recordings & his voice is magnificent! Being a singer, I still marvel at his ability to sing "All'armi!" on a high D and still say the 2nd syllable "mi" on such a note! WOW. There is also of course his very sweet, impassioned and lyrical turn as Rodolfo in "La Boheme" as well as the lesser known (although I still have it on casette) "La Favorita" which has a particularly high tessitura.
Also featured are a young Plácido Domingo singing a VERY nice "Flower song/ La fleur que tu m'avais jetée" from Carmen. He usually sounds too pushed for me on the top notes (as one might expect from a Pavarotti fan, I like free top notes) but in this recording he is pretty darn fabulous. He also sings an aria from "Tales of Hoffman/Les Contes d'Hoffman" and I have always felt that he, like Neil Schicoff, were well suited to this role.
Lamentably there are only one selection each from Carreras, Correlli, Monaco, Aragall & Kollo. Especial kudos to the young recording they feature for Aragall. He had a very free and nice high tenor well suited to Verdi. Of course as his career went forward with the natural darkening of his voice and the "heavier" roles, he did start to develop a wobble. But this recording is before that. His top, his phrasing are all beautifully done in his featured aria from "La Traviata."
Mario del Monaco's "E lucevan le stelle" is hauntingly beautiful and has such a wonderful pianissimo in it that it makes you just want to gasp for beauty's sake. I now know every tenor I've heard sing this aria was trying to emulate what he did.
This is a great CD because it does bring together on one CD some of the greatest singers of the 20th/21st century. Bergonzi, di Stefano, Björling, in addition to the previously mentioned artists is quite an impressive collection. I'm sure there's only one of each for Carreras, Aragall (I believe they are formerly EMI/Angel artists) and perhaps some of the others because they are "imported" from another label. There's so much Pavarotti on this CD because he IS a Decca artist.
A highly recommended CD, affordable, not the usually obscure and unpolished artists that are sometimes found on compilations. Plus acutal linear notes and translations. Nicely done, Decca!!!
Absolutely Agree About Corelli.......2005-05-27
Franco Corelli's "Nessun Dorma" is still the best of them all - clear, passionate, and exciting. (And those final two notes...! Gives me chills just to think of it.) I was fortunate enough to see him live in both "Turandot" and "Romeo and Juliet" a year before his retirement, and he was still a Calaf and a Romeo to die for... as, of course, Liu and Juliet did! As it is, I tend to buy compilations depending on how much Corelli they include - though Bjorling is a strong second, and I have happy memories of Domingo. Long live the Golden Age of Operatic Tenors!

Amazon.com's Best of 1999
Record-label politics prevented this awesome recording of Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich from being released for 34 years. The spitfire musician delivers a powerful set of Chopin's best-loved works that still sounds riveting today. Intense and gorgeous. --Jason Verlinde
Amazon.com essential recording
How can it be that a recording by one of today's indisputably unequaled pianists performing some of her prime repertory--made fresh within months of her triumph in the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition--could languish for decades in the vaults before its official release? Chalk it up to the exclusivity clauses of rival recording companies and legal constraints from which not even Wotan with the help of Loge could extricate himself. Thankfully this belated EMI release--recorded in a few sessions at the Abbey Road studios--is finally available.
It's a significant complement to Argerich's other accounts of Chopin on disc. From the white-hot intensity of Argerich's way with the composer, you can easily extrapolate a sense of what had recently wowed the jury in Warsaw. The Argentinean pianist undertakes the Third Sonata as a vast, big-voiced, far-reaching statement that encompasses both molten power and moments of almost unbearably intimate lyricism (listen closely to her gestures of illumination in the Largo). With a characteristically unforced spontaneity, Argerich sounds the shattering chords that launch the finale (recorded in one take); her sense of flow in the Nocturne No. 4 is a perfect mesh for the illusion of improvising that is so central to Chopin. She commands the logic--both emotional and musical--of the composer's skittish turns in the Scherzo No. 3 and crafts three of the mazurkas into perfectly chiseled character pieces. The sheer force of Argerich's personality might seem overwhelming to those accustomed to a tamer Chopin--listen to how she dives into the A-flat Polonaise--but it's always at work dusting off tired clichés and uncovering the music's expressive wealth. For those who know about Argerich's artistry, this disc is indispensable; anyone who has yet to make that enviable discovery will find it (together with the Argerich anthology in Philips' Great Pianists series) a great place to begin. --Thomas May
Customer Reviews:
Lost is Found, finally.......2007-07-08
This Argerich Chopin performance, recorded by EMI in 1965 while she was actually under contract to DG is formidable for an artist so early in her career. Both the artistry and sound are superb and it's a shame we fans had to wait so long for this recording to appear. These Chopin performances completely justify the competition judges decision to award her the grand prize at the 1965 Warsaw International Chopin Competition. It's a collection must have!
Martha Argerich CD.......2007-06-12
Excellent service -- speedy, just as described, well-packaged. I'd definitely buy from this seller again.
Fabulous recording.......2007-04-12
A most interesting history in the liner notes and a fabulous recording. One of the best for a piano CD collection.
Excellent.......2007-04-12
Only one word: Excellent.
Though someone might have different feeling, I'm crazy on this 1965 recording.
A restored jewel in the Argerich catalog.......2006-09-03
If I had to pick a single CD to win awed admiration for Martha Argerich, this Chopin recital would be it. Only 24 when she made these long-suppressed recordings, Argerich's musicality and dazzling technqiue defy belief. Every ounce of praise for her Third Sonata is deserved--it's spontaneous, flexible, intense, by turns tender and declamatory. The most blessed quality is that she doesn't bang or harangue us--not always the case in later years. Her sense of urgency doesn't become eckless; the bursts of excitment aren't oerly explosive.
My only caveat would be for audiophiles. Although an Abbey Road studio recording, you get the feeling somewhat that Argerich is performing in a boomy hall. Also, in the loudest fortes there's mircophone shatter. For many listeners these drawbacks won't matter a whit, not in the face of an undisputed keyboard genius.

With her debut album appearing at the age of 28, Martha Wainwright has lived in a musical world since she was born. She posses a voice with timbres similar to her brother, Rufus, and to her mother and aunt, Kate & Anna McGarrigle. She also has a way of stretching syllables out for reasons at once musical and textual, very much like her father, Loudon Wainwright, from whom she's also inherited a bold autobiographical stance, albeit couched in her own particular poetics. A bracing confidence informs these thirteen songs, from the bright shiny pop of "G.P.T." and "The Maker" (with the unmistakable voice of Rufus on backup vocals) to the fragile balladry of "Whither Must I Wander." Martha Wainwright continues the family tradition of audacious debuts. -- David Greenberger
Album Description
Martha Wainwright comes from a family that some would call "musical royalty." She is the daughter of Kate McGarrigle and Loudon Wainwright III, and sister of Rufus Wainwright, yet she writes and sings with a style completely her own. After several tours as opener and band-mate for Rufus Wainwright, and appearances on albums by Rufus, the McGarrigles, Gordon Gano (Violent Femmes) and Linda Thompson, Martha made her own bold statement with the release of her EP BMFA earlier this year. The EP garnered rave reviews: The London Times called it a "tour de force" while The New York Times named it "a gorgeous teaser" to her forthcoming full-length debut. The release of that self-titled debut album takes things to a whole new level. An album of contrasts, Martha Wainwright features tracks filled with raw, fiery, passionate energy alongside unforgettable, hauntingly beautiful ballads.

3.5 stars.......2007-01-14
Maybe I'm just inclined to enjoy Martha (I'm a huge fan of her family, especially Rufus), but I think her voice is really strong and unique. Her songwriting ability on the other hand... well, let's just say that I never realize how important lyrics are to me until I find an artist who writes silly, rambling ones. Oh well, the sound quality is great, Martha's voice is a joy to listen to, and as long and you don't think too much about what she's actually saying it's quite enjoyable. Standout tracks are the heartfelt B.M.F.A., Whither Must I wander, and Who was I kidding? These songs have simpler instrumentals and less cheesy backup vocalizing, showcasing Martha's voice to its best advantage. All in all it's a somewhat mixed bag, but worth checking out.
Martha Wainwright.......2006-12-09
Martha Wainwright~ Martha Wainwright is a very pleasant surprise indeed. I borrowed this album from my local library and to be honest I had never heard of this singer/musician before. Ms Wainwright is an accomplished vocalist and a very good lyricist. However, her lyrics can become a bit meandering at times and she seems to happy singing about subjects that just go on and on. At times I have really no idea what she is singing about at all but it sure sounds beautiful. The production value on this album is outstanding and the sound is crisp. The book-let is a mixed bag and the photo on the cover is terrible and looks like it has been taken by some high-school kid or shot with a cheap instant camera. The font is easy on the eye and the lyrics are therefore easy to read. This is a very good album that could use text editing but apart from this I give it four out five stars.
you're across town, don't even have a clue.......2006-11-24
if only this voice were a magic carpet! after having said that, i think i should rephrase. martha wainwright's music IS a magic carpet, and it'll sweep you up, whether you be in your pajamas or out driving to pick up milk under the new moon, and it'll keep you surprisingly safe, while revealing this uncommon and uncensored power, exposing her raw human condition via a seriously different beat. it feels old and wise but also as new as birth itself. the unpredictable and shattered liftings and fallings of her voice will work their way in and before you know it, your state of heart and mind will be altered in a much needed way. i found my way to martha wainwright's music after seeing her stunning performance of The Traitor in the film Leonard Cohen, I'm your Man. You've likely aleady seen it but if not, you'll wanna. I think Martha should prepare herself for her own carpet ride as she is not going to remain our precious secret for long. I been clued in, you've obviously been clued in, and off she goes. And might i add, real music lovers are plentiful out here and we don't need to be catered to with easily packaged songs. We are progressive people searching high and low for unprecedented passion to move us out here in the world, so do your thing Martha and whatever time you want to come for you will soon be underfoot, if it's not already. !!!Can't wait to see a live show!!!

Luciano Pavrotti: The Best (Farewell Tour).......2007-06-27
Wonderful Pavarotti sings the best of the best. His voice never ceases to amaze me. Listening pleasure at it's finest.
Luciano Pavorotti.......2007-02-17
All the songs are wonderful, can never become tired of listening to his songs. Excellent.
Luciano is the best!.......2007-01-20
I can't speak more highly of this collection of Pavrotti's songs. I keep this two CD pack in my car so I can enjoy it on my way to and from work. Even after I have arrived, I find myself sitting in my car waiting for a song to end. Walking out on a song seems sacriligious. While I grew up listening to Caruso and Lanza, there is no question that Pavrotti is the Master! Although, I do have to admit Pavrotti has the greater advantage of modern recording technology to better present his talent than Caruso and Lanza had. However, Lanza definitely didn't have the power that Pavrotti has. With Caruso, we will never know... I highly recommend this collection of Pavrotti's, if you are a Pavrotti fan. If you aren't, buy it anyway and become one:)

Latter-day also-rans.......2007-05-28
There will always be arguments for this or that singer, but this title is absurd. I didn't see a single Jussi Bjoerling, George London, Leonard Warren, or Zinka Milanov, and only one mention of Del Monaco. These were singers. Bjoerling and London were in a class by themselves. I saw all of these folks live on stage. London and Del Monaco had stage presence you don't get now. Di Stefano, Kirsten, de los Angeles should be on any best list. Play any tenor aria by any tenor; then play Bjoerling's. Play any bass/baritone aria by any singer; then play London's. Jussi and George will knock your socks off. They sang everything in every language. Tebaldi and Pavarotti sang only Italian, much easier.
A well-sung compilation.......2003-09-15
Compilations usually receive negative feedback from experienced opera listeners. However, this compilation by no means should be only welcomed by opera listeners, it should be welcomed by all music listeners. This CD is a great one to own for a first time opera listener. Also, for the person who wants to listen to opera once in a while and who does not want to buy a myriad of CD's in order to have the same amount of arias as this CD has. Eighty-percent of the singers are high-quality singers in this CD and the orchestras along with their respective conductors, do justice to the songs. All of the arias in this CD are what we in the field call, standard repertoire, and therefore are a good source for a beginning musician to help him or her listen to phrasing, colour, dynamics, language etc. I certainly recommend it, without a doubt.
This cant be the best.......2003-04-20
Elisa from Italy is absolutely right--well, the present generation may not be able to listen the golden oldies and the grand masters in person but it is still true that the past masters far surpassed the new. De Stefano had a magnetic voice, but listen to Gigli singing Puccini's La boheme and you will melt away, though it is v v v difficult to get hold of his mono recordings, even in CD. I disagree with Elisa only on one point: Tebaldi is good, but Victoria de Los angeles' Mimi is better. And the indulgent Thomas Beecham is my favourite conductor of this opera, way ahead of Toscannini, but De Stefano's Boheme is worth keeping and listening to again and again....
TRUE OPERA LOVERS CANNOT POSSIBLY LIKE THIS!.......2002-11-27
True opera lovers (I won't say "experts" 'cos I dislike the word) cannot possibly like this ... ! Apart from Callas, here there is none of the greatest artists! Callas may be great in Carmen but nobody can beat RENATA TEBALDI and her angel-like voice in all of Puccini's operas or in GIORDANO's Andrea Chénier. No Carreras can beat MARIO DEL MONACO in Leoncavallo's Pagliacci, or Verdi's Otello. And finally, NO ALAGNA, or PAVAROTTI, or LICITRA, or whatever CHEAP TENOR or CROOK can ever beat the greatest tenor of all times: GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Come on! You can't like crook Pavarotti once you have heard Giuseppe Di Stefano!! You can't like ... connductor Riccardo Muti if you have listened to Arturo Toscanini!!
True opera lovers, especially lovers of Puccini, go for the Immortal, the Sublime, the Beautiful in opera: GO FOR GIUSEPPE DI STEFANO!
Go hear his performance of "E lucevan le stelle" as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "Tosca" or "Che Gelida manina" always as in EMI Callas/Di Stefano "La Boéme" and you'll know what I mean.
Even if you Hate Complilations, Get This One.......2002-06-21
This is a marvelous collection of better known arias and duets in Opera. The singers are those famous for setting, and raising, the bar in their field and for their times: Renata Scotto, Maria Callas, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Jose Carreras, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti. If you are only somewhat familiar with opera, these recordings give you the highest feeling of what an aria or duet can sound like when sung and interpreted at its best. If you are already familiar with these songs, then you will appreciate this collection all the more for having gathered them in one place. I play both discs all the time. I've especially appreciated being able to compare vocal qualities side by side, so to speak, as Maria Callas can be heard next to Mirella Freni and Victoria de los Angeles. Even if you are not familiar with these singers, this is the way to meet them. Maria Callas has a much darker, back of the throat tone. Mirella Freni is pure, clear and light floating up in the higher notes. You can almost visualize the singers as they place the notes in their throats and set them out in the air to vibrate.

Considered by some pundits as having played second fiddle to the lofty mainstream success of Motown's Diana Ross and the Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas (initially Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard, who was replaced by Betty Kelly in 1964) had a grittier sound that may not have given them the same kind of pop following accorded label founder Berry Gordy Jr.'s "pet" group. But as this 25-track compilation demonstrates, former Motown secretary Reeves and her cohorts hardly languished in obscurity. Rather, the team--with the assistance of Motown producers like Mickey Stevenson and the formidable Holland-Dozier-Holland trio--provided the musical soundtrack for the '60s with such classics as "Heat Wave," "Dancing in the Street," "Nowhere to Run," and their first hit, 1963's "Come and Get These Memories." While it doesn't have every one of the group's 24 charted hits, this collection includes all of their major smashes, some notable B-sides ("A Love Like Yours," "Forget Me Not," "Motoring," and the much-loved "Third Finger, Left Hand"), and some interesting obscurities, such as 1970's "I Should Be Proud" (a poorly disguised Vietnam protest) and "Tear It On Down," the group's final chart single. A perfect, essential overview of one of Motown's most prized and admired female groups. --David Nathan
Customer Reviews:
From The Essential Soundtrack.......2007-05-07
Talk about the soundtrack of the 1960's: I first became aware of Martha and The Vandellas in 1964: "Love is Like a Heatwave" was on the sound track of the movie "Nothing But A Man" with Ivan Dixon and Abbey Lincoln. I'd never yet heard of Motown, but it was all I could do to stay properly seated during "Heatwave;" people did not get up and boogie around during movies in those days, and the movie, one of the earliest to support civil rights, wasn't a dancing movie.
But Martha and the Vandellas, though everybody knows they were not Motown's favorite girl group -- think Diana Ross and The Supremes-- did receive sufficient support from Berry Gordy's machine to have many more 60's hits. Their music was, of course, more roots/gospel/black than that of the Supremes, much tougher, and more danceable, too. In addition to "Heatwave," Holland-Dozier-Holland gave them "Come and Get These Memories," "A Love Like Yours Don't Come Knocking Every Day," "Quicksand," "Live Wire," "Nowhere to Run,""Love Makes Me Do Foolish Things," "I'm Ready For love," and the great "Jimmy Mack." The immortal Marvin Gaye actually had a hand in that essential, widely-covered 60's anthem "Dancing in the Street."
A few years ago, I was able to see Martha Reeves, carrying backup singers,to be sure, at New York's South Street Seaport. Her voice was always a bit quavery; that's gotten more pronounced with age. But she still could put her big hits over.
You'll find all those big hits and more collected here, smaller hits, and interesting B sides. If they're part of the sound track of your life, if you love girl group sounds, soul or Motown, or if you're just starting high school and love to dance, this record belongs on the shelf.
this is for my sisters!.......2007-05-07
i loved Martha and the Vandellas! i remember the prom my sisters went to and the pretty chiffon dresses they wore and driving off with their boyfriend in that long convertable and listening to Martha and the Vandellas singing in the background. it was like it was straight out of one of those old pepsodent/brilcream/dippity-do type commercials. it was so smooth! i love them. i will hold them to my heart forever!
Thanks for the REAL version of "Jimmy Mack".......2007-01-04
I'll just say this collection is complete, and has awesome audio quality--the best of three collections I have--and it has the "original" of "Jimmy Mack" [THANKS Universal]. If you're a fan--BUY IT... You'll be satisfied!
Supremes ultimate with lower case u, Vandellas Ultimate with Upper Case U.......2006-10-02
The Vandellas were much better than the Supremes. The Supremes started in 1961, and didn't have a hit until 1963, When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes. Martha had a hit with her Vandellas in 1963, Come and Get These Memories. It took a 2 song wait until that came, with I'll Have To Let Him Go, and You'll Never Cherish A Love So True (Til' You Lose It). Martha had THREE hits until the "ascendency" of the "supremes". Those hits were Come and Get These Memories, Heat Wave, and Quicksand. In 1964, The Vandellas were experiencing their last year as "top girl group".
I dont understand that the Supremes were better when it took them EIGHT singles until "Where Did Our Love Go".Like I said, it took TWO (do the math, 8 - 2 = DUH!)songs until Martha and the Vandellas breakthrough!
About the CD, Mono(ultimate collection) sounds ALOT better than Stereo(20th Century Masters). And, I CAN dance to Martha, as I can just "sing along" to the Supremes. I would rate the CD 10 stars, but there is a five star limit. I have actually had this CD since January 2006 .(Don't Ask why I took so long to review!)One complaint is that I could find longer versions of Dancing In The Street and Nowhere To Run on other Albums. (This album has longer versions than 20th century masters.)Also, on the bright side with Heat Wave, on 20th century....., there was an extra horn bridge, and the song ended early, but here, there was no extra horn bridge, and the song went further than 20th Century..... . One problem also is that this compilation could have There He Is (At My Door) (flip of "Dancing")and Dancing slow. (flip side of Wild One)So, this CD is the CD to get because of details and the fact that the Vandellas WERE the BEST girl group. And remember, when describing the Vandellas, always use a capital letter!
HOW AWESOME THE VANDELLAS REALLY ARE.......2006-05-15
this cd is by far the best i've ever owned!I am a huge martha and the vandellas fan, and I think that"DANCING IN THE STREET" is the best song, not only on this cd, but in the WHOLE wide world!

Classical music people, critics in particular, have a reputation for being grumpy, and this disc illustrates why. It's called Martha Argerich Debut Recital. Now, what does this tell you about it? Nothing, that's what. And the title isn't even correct! Actually, there's more material here than appeared on her debut recital, not the least of which is a stunning Liszt Sonata in B minor, which is the major work on the disc. When one of the two or three greatest living pianists turns in a performance of a major work like the Liszt Sonata that has been generally acclaimed, you would think that her record company would somehow get that piece of news into the title of the recording. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
WOW! Absolutely stunning!.......2007-01-16
I just bought this disc and was blown away by it. It was everything I thought it would be and then some. It has to be one of the great piano recital CDs of all time. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this.
Undeniably Argerich.......2006-11-08
Any one interested in knowing how piano should be played and can be played should get this CD. When I first heard the CD, I was surprised already by her debut recital Argerich has mastered such a distinctive style. I must disagree with the reviewer below who describe this as not imaginative, for nothing could be further from the truth. Argerich's playing is clearly her own, and no one else's. If one wants to hear a technically perfect but emotionally empty playing of Chopin, many of the newer artists would happily fill that bill. And for the record, Horowitz can make plenty of mistakes too, but that doesn't take the charm away from listening to his playing.
That being said, this is one of the most turbulent, drenching rendition of Chopin there is. I love it.
You have to listen to this Lizst sonata.......2006-07-05
Before this performance I thought that I did not like the sonata because no other pianist could keep its many parts and segments together from the beginning to the end. This is the only performance that does that for me. When I listened to it for the first time, I broke up in tears. Argerich's interpretation is mezmerizing. Buy it! Any serious music collector should have this CD.
Unbelievably Amazing..........2006-06-16
I've never paid attention to the Liszt Sonata until I heard this recording. I canNOT BELIEVE some people are calling her without soul or "muddy"... This is the single most inspiring and shocking CD. Really gives you chills when you listen to it. Makes your heart beat faster.
Is that Liszt's great Sonata?.......2005-10-12
No words! Just a simple, superfast read of Liszt's masterpiece, no soul, no ritardandos, nothing. Only supersonic playing, full of virtuosity and bravura in "virtuoso parts", mere exercise in others. That is what people call "cirkus Liszt"! Horrible!

This is madness in action. Martha Argerich's Rachmaninoff Third is the fastest and most physically exciting you'll ever hear. She's recorded live, and the balances are a little strange as a result. You can also tell that Riccardo Chailly and his orchestra are having a hell of time trying to keep up with her, while anticipating what she's about to do next--but so what? This is as close as you can come to an experience of spontaneous combustion, and survive. The Tchaikovsky is, if possible, even wilder, with quite a few missed notes. But with an artist like Argerich, you simply can't judge the performance one note at a time. So go ahead: live dangerously. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
WONDERFUL rendition of Rach 3.......2007-06-03
I haven't listened to all, as I so love Rachmaninov that its all I can do to get beyond him. Her rendition sounds so soulful and right on, the timing perfect or as close to as possible, its absolute heaven, and hell, as his music seems to be, to listen to it. I love it, always have, and was not at all disappointed by this cd. Highly Recommended.
Quite simply the best Rach 3 I've heard.......2007-03-29
Blindingly fast - I can only imagine the hand cramps she had afterwards! Simply amazing.
A mess.......2007-03-17
I have the utmost respect for Argerich both as a pianist and as an artist. As talented and gifted as she is, it's her sense of engagement and commitment that never fails to elicit admiration and awe in me. Her readings are so overwhelming and passionate that one often gets the impression that her life is dependent on whatever she happens to be playing. On the right day, she's able to draw the most riveting and powerful sounds from the piano and conjure up the deepest and strongest feelings that one can experience by listening to a piece of music. More often than not, however, haste and anxiety get the best of her and what was intended to be an engaging performance ends up being a chaotic and incomprehensible gathering of notes. Therein lies the main problem with her rendition of Rachmaninov's third piano concerto: it lacks structural integrity and the blurred articulation often results in missing, indistinct or simply wrong notes. She fares better in Tchaikovsky's first piano concerto, though not so much so as to avoid the aforementioned shortcomings. Definitely not a good buy. Hyperion has recently released a wonderful live performance by Stephen Hough of the four Rachmaninov's piano concertos. The sound is pristine and the playing is top quality. This recording is to be preferred over Argerich's.
Absolutely fantastic CD.......2007-01-13
If you appreciate the piano, the performance by Martha Argerich will blow you away. The woman is absolutely amazing. This is one of my favorite CDs and I recommend it for anyone who wants to hear a master at work.
Martha Argerich: the only person who can make piano sing.......2006-09-16
At first I was disappointed. Then, listening through a pair of $99 headphones, I was totally captivated, from the start. Up close listening does make a difference! I must say that, after listening to so many of Martha's recordings and reading so many reviews (even from professionals) about her, nobody has picked up one unique trait of Martha's playing against all other great piano players' (including Horowitz, whose playing is more philosophical than musical to me), namely, Martha's reading of music is holistic, or three dimensional, or whatever you want to call it. It is as if she were an architect, an architect of tonal structures. In every pieces of music she plays (esp. solos), you sense a structure. She renders every passage with a view to the whole piece. Whereas if you listen to other pianists (including Horowitz), every passage is to be contrasted only with the one before and the one after, never the whole piece. It is as if other pianists were bound by the flow of time and could not jump beyond the constraint and see the whole picture (this is what I call two dimensional). Anyway, I alway like to tell people that Martha is the only person who can make piano sing. She is the only person who can make piano weep. And she plays as if her life depends on it.
