The "Clinker" of the bunch.......2006-12-19

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

A Fabulous Introduction to Igor Stravinsky!!.......2004-05-19

Sony Music's "The Essential Igor Stravinsky" truly lives up to its title. This double-CD set includes nearly every important piece of work (either in part or in whole) by the great Russian composer. The set also presents the pieces in chronological order beginning in 1908 with "Fireworks" and ending in 1966 with his final piece, the short but simple "Owl and The Pussycat". In between, there are excerpts from Stravinsky's most famous works including the first part of "The Rite Of Spring" and highlights from the "Firebird" and "Petrushka" ballets. There are also lesser-known works included as well as his harmonically rearranged version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (a rendition which caused a stir in the early 1940's). The entire collection concludes with a rare recorded interview with Igor Stravinsky himself in which he remembers the infamous premere of "The Rite Of Spring".
The CD booklet includes detailed liner notes as well as a written tribute by Trey Anastasio of the band Phish. The sound quality of the recordings is amazing (even on the historic 1934 recording of "Piano Rag Music"). All in all, this an excellent collection of works by the great Igor Stravinsky. In a sense, this compilation gives the composer the 'rock musician' treatment. It's a 'greatest hits' album and a career-spanning retrospective that serves as an ideal introduction to Igor's music. Even if your not a fan of Classical music, it isn't difficult to listen to the works of Stravinsky and not be stirred.

A good collection for someone fairly new to classical guitar. I have over 300 guitar recordings, but I still enjoyed this CD - a good one on the road, for example. Nice pieces and performances.

Great music CD collection for guitar music listeners.......2002-03-15

I really understand that there's no music CD could fulfill our satisfaction of music. But it does. I can find most of my favorite guitar classical songs here, and it's very nice listening them: Cavatina (from the Deer Hunter), Romance D'Amour, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, etc. I have several favorites not included in this album: Capricho Arabe-Lagrima-Adelita, and lucky me I have them on my other CDs. Go get this CD!! By buying this 1 CD, you'll have more than half of classical guitars you've ever wanted!

This is a really good choice for your morning music CD.......2001-11-08

There is something about classical guitar that is just so appropriate to background morning music as "Mad About Guitars" will quickly prove to you. Like most people, I am not overly familiar with classical guitar pieces; once you get past "Granada" I certainly could not name another work that I would expect to hear on such an album. The only other familiar pieces are "Greensleeves" and "Georgia on My Mind," and, yes, now that I think of it "Greensleeves" is a guitar piece, but then this album concludes with Bach's Fugue in G. So this collection is certainly going to broaden your horizons in terms of classical guitar. You will also come away with a great appreciation for Giran Sillscher, who plays the guitar on two-thirds of the selections. In fact, "Portrait," was written for Sillscher by Stanley Myers, which is certainly a nice testimonial to his skill. If you have a CD player in your alarm clock, this is an excellent choice for finding a happy home therein.

I think this CD is the best compilation of classical guitar music that's out there. Deutsche Grammophon has done a great job of picking the best pieces and the best players. Buy this CD!

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

Henry Cowell (1987-1965) was one of the bad boys of American music, playing all kinds of musical tricks on the audience (if not the instruments used in his music). This disc, however, has none of that and shows a poignant and meditative side to his character. Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) never quite went as far as Cowell; his music, as seen in The Hollow Men, is quite conservative, rather traditional for American romanticism. Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) is the great-granddady of them all. MacDowell's To a Wild Rose is a nostalgic piece stuck in the middle of the 19th century played very well here. --Paul Cook

An American composer.......2003-06-30

If you are American, and you like music, then Henry Cowell should definitely be in your ear. Although very different from that of Copland and other composers whose names are synonymous with American music, Cowell's work possesses a quality that screams, "AMERICAN! AMERICAN, AMERICAN, AMERICAN!!!!" You get the idea.

The Manhattan Chamber Orchestra is very pleasant on this CD, never interruptive, always flowing and accompanying well (where applicable). R.A. Clark is a bright young conductor who is a subtle artist (rare for a young conductor on recordings that I own). Although I prefer my chamber orchestras sans conductor, I believe Clark adds to the product instead of taking away from it.

The item on this CD that jumps out at me is the "Air & Scherzo" for saxophone and chamber orchestra. The piece is short and delightful, with different moods. From dark to capricious to dark to mischievous. The saxophone soloist Gary Louie makes a very difficult piece of the repertoire sound very easy. His effortless control of the altissimo register, impeccable technique overall, and the beautiful shape he gives to each line make this CD worth owning and listening to on a regular basis. What a beautiful sound throughout the range of the saxophone.

Overall CD is highly recommended, but the "Air & Scherzo" is the precious gem of the album.

Neglected Master.......2001-08-14

Cowell was a very influential fingure in pre-war American music; a friend of Ives, teacher of Cage and Harrison, and a generous champion of other people's music. It is sad, therefore, that so much of his music is ignored by the record companies. His avant-garde piano music is widely available, but the more tonal, more readily accessible orchestral music which he wrote after 1940 (much of it influenced by old American hymns and folk music) is largely ignored. That is why this disk is so much to be welcomed, for it makes available some of Cowell's most attractive orchestral works in a fine modern recording and performance. I mean no disrespect to the other composers featured on this disc, but I regret that it was not issued as a 100% Cowell recording, filled up, perhaps, with one of his 20 symphonies. Not one of these has been recorded in modern times, though the best of them (4,5, 7 and 11)are tuneful, terse and often very moving.

The music on this CD is surprising to me. I have always associated Henry Cowell (1897-1965) with outrageous methods of playing a piano. There is nothing outrageous in these pieces. They are quiet and easy to listen to, more in keeping with 19th century romanticism than with avante-garde, twentieth century music. Yes, it is surprising to hear this music against my own pre-disposition of Cowell -- I like surprises. ;D The notes provide insight to the composer and his works. It seems he had a devilish sense of humour. For example, Cowell describes the two-part form of HYMN & FUGING TUNE #10 as "something slow followed by something fast." This self-effacing attitude belies the considerable respect he received from composers who took his work seriously such as Bartok, Schnabel and Janacek, all of whom sponsered performances. From the notes, I also learned that, although Cowell is most frequently associated with "tone clusters" (chords composed of seconds rather than the more traditional thirds), Charles Ives made use of them earlier. Vincent Persichetti (1915-1987) is described as having been "one of the most important composition teachers in the country". Finally, Edward MacDowell (1860-1908) is often credited as the first important composer from the US. If you are interested in peaceful, romantic music, or in uncharacteristic music from Henry Cowell, this CD will be interesting to you.
