A universal spirituality.......2000-08-18

For an album of music from a culture I know virtually nothing about there is an incredible pull to listen again and again. This album is a treasure and a delight and should have appeal and meaning for any serious listener. The superb vocals both male and female are clear, sincere and delightful to the ear. Opera fans can enjoy this as a palate cleanser. No nonsense... Just straight beautiful tones. Buy it.

The music on this disk is absolutely beautiful and masterfully performed by Alia Musica. Mr. Sanchez and Alia Musica deserve the highest praise. "El Canto Espiritual..." is a gem!

A Truly Inspirational Album.......1999-01-22

This is a truly inspirational album, particularly for those who may be overfamiliar with the liturgy commonly practiced in modern synagogues. Drawing upon an old and rich program of music by Sephardic Jews living in the middle ages, Alia Musica presents a controlled but enlightening, moving, and spiritually engaging set of prayers and poems in Hebrew and Spanish.

WONDERFUL (but missing something.).......2003-03-19

After a while, although some of the songs sound the same, it grows on you. This, being my favorite childhood book, thrilled me to no end. The singers: great. The music: fun. The jokes: hilarious.

Great Dame!.......1999-07-04

Wonderful to hear the great Dame in Operetta. Her voice is very expressive and beautiful in this recording, her diction, surprisingly good. I find myself listening to this cd everytime I need a "lift". It never fails to make me smile. And the music is glorious. Too bad Sutherland didn't record the Operetta in it's entirety. So we would have to purchased Dame Joan's VHS of "The Merry Widow", in which we would have to suffer with a sixty year old Sutherland's wide vibrato. But she is magnificent here!!!

Superb and beautiful!.......2001-05-10

The Sephardic Jews lived in medieval Spain, and later in North Africa and the Ottoman Empire. As a long-time fan of Sephardic music, I can say that this is one of the best interpretations of Sephardic songs that I have ever heard. The songs have essentially been recorded in live, single takes, to recapture the essence of the folk elements in Sephardic music. This approach works very well, and the result is convincing and very moving.

The singing is excellent, and the instrumental accompaniments show great virtuosity. They include such exotic instruments as the 'ud (Middle Eastern lute), psaltery, Arabic drums, medieval harp, recorder, and fiddle. Tim Rayborn's playing is amazing, showing proficiency with a number of wonderful instruments.

You'll love this CD!.......2003-01-14

This is a favorite CD (hasn't been out of our CD changer since we've gotten it!) in our house and the one we play when we have guests. It's calming and relaxing to listen to. The selection of pieces includes many recognizable favorites (even for those not familiar with classical music). Hanna Song's beautiful playing is skilled, confident and personal; when I listen to the CD I feel as if I'm being treated to a wonderful private concert. My toddler enjoys the real version of Mozart (instead of "Baby" Mozart). This is the classical CD we listen to most often. It's the perfect CD for anyone's collection.

If you like Mozart, Hanna Song's impressive interpretation of the Sonata in C Major (K. 330) will leave you wanting more!
