From an audiophile's perspective, this could be a demonstration disc. Onczay's refulgent sonority is captured in a recording that radiates warmth and presence from top to bottom. Musically speaking, though, Onczay's meticulous attention to detail often spills over into pedanticism. He scrutinizes and worries over the music in such a way that each note stands as a newly minted gem, scrubbed clean of nuance and rhythmic life, and liberated from the dirt and grime of melodic inflection. The results are less like dance movements than solemn etudes tackled with kid gloves. --Jed Distler

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:

A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

The most thoughtful interpretations I've ever heard.......2004-08-27

I first bought this CD looking to "get into classical music." I knew next to nothing about classical, but I knew that Bach was simply the best composer there ever was, or at least he was up there. So I grabbed this CD, listened to it three times, and have never let it collect dust in the six years I've owned it.

Blysma displays an absolute natural ability (and agility) in focusing the genius of Bach's Suites for Cello. His command of the instrument is astounding (the same sort of proficiency Bronfman displays with Rachmaninoff, or Edgar Meyer with himself).

He excels, particularily, in the sleight-of-hand triple-string harmonies that Bach somewhat invented in his suites. And yet nothing suffers in the bow attack, he rips into the strings, slaps his fingers against the neck. You can hear them thudding against the cello through the whole CD, certainly an audio glimpse into the confidence of Blysma's playing. I suppose in order to play these pieces successfully (not being a cello-player myself), you need the utmost confidence, besides an extra joint or two in the left hand. Blysma shies not away.

I've heard so many "genius" recordings where the Prelude to Suite no. 1 is carried off in metronome fashion. You could set a watch to Yo-Yo Ma's recording, and if that's your cup of tea, get cranking. Blysma seems to decide for a little variation, and infuses, not pauses, but the illusion of pauses, letting his fingers do the vibrato to end the note quickly, or lifting with his bow quickly. The result is a phrasing so subtle and genuine that it's impossible to get over. Just what does Blysma see in the suites that no one else does?

My favorite is Suite no. 2; especially the beginning of Allemande, where Blysma digs the bow into the strings for that three-note opener. Then the yearning begins, and suddenly Blysma grows a third arm and another cello (it literally sounds like a duet in places). The Menuet movement is to me the climax of the disc, sort of a cello reflection; as if the notes look inward to themselves and examine the space they occupy. If all this sounds like rubbish then perhaps I've listened too much.

Whatever, the recording is bulletproof and an absolute must for any cello player/student of music. With Blysma you start to see how the strands of interpretation work; and that is, a telepathy between performer and composer. Let the goosebumps begin.

Don't Overlook!.......2004-01-19

More familiar names like Ma, Rostropovich, or Casals are often mentioned as recommendations for recordings of Bach's glorious cello suites, and rightly so. Don't overlook Anner Bylsma's interpretations, though. They easily hold their own with or surpass more famous ones.

A seasoned figure of the period performance movement, Bylsma offers us some wonderful music-making here. He beautifully balances the cool calculation and rhapsodic, improvisational feel of these pieces. These are fundamentally warm, fleet, lyrical interpretations, yet they certainly don't neglect the more stringent, austere, solemn elements of the works. Bylsma's 1669 Venetian instrument has a pleasingly dry, light tone and is well recorded in a spacious church acoustic.

I haven't heard Bylsma's more recent recordings of the suites, but based on these recordings, I'd sure love to.

MY KIND OF BA CH!.......2003-09-24

When I first listened to this recording of Anner Bylsma playing the entire 6 suites of Bach, I was amazed! It takes me back on a little trip to Germany back in the 1700's, when Bach originally wrote this piece. It's very authentic and on a more Baroque approach--which is my own personal preference. There are so many cellists who tend to play Bach on a more romantic or modernized approach. I like this album mainly because it's the way Bach should be played.

For those who have listened to the Sony #61811 and #61812 CDs, can you respond if the tone/quality of the CD is identical to that of the Sony #48047 was recorded in 1992? I am thinking of buying #61811, but I have heard #48047.

Shoppers should note that Anner Bylsma has recorded the Bach Suites twice. Sony #61811 and #61812 are reissues of a 1979 recording, while the 2 volume set Sony #48047 was recorded in 1992. Both are outstanding. Some critics prefer the performance on the earlier set, which has a rather dry sound. I have been waiting for it to be reissued so that I can obtain Volume 2. The later set, which I own, was recorded on a very large instrument, the "Stradivarius Servais," in a very resonant recording.

Bylsma's approach is stunning.......2000-01-13

To those of you who are chary of "historically informed" interpretations, you needn't be in this case. Though presumably Bylsma's approach is scholarly and "correct", there is nothing objective about his interpretation. It is sinewy, chocolately, dramatic, as winning and hearfelt an interpretation as any of the great performances on the modern cello by Cassals, Fournier, Rostropovich et al.

Bylsma uses an actual period cello, not a reproduction, but manages to bring it alive and to coax out of it the sweetest sounds. Bylsma's tempi are faster than those familiar with modern interpretations might be prepared for, but his musicianship is so keen that the most precise phrasing remains intact and Bach's music never ends up sounding forced or rushed.

From an audiophile's perspective, this could be a demonstration disc. Onczay's refulgent sonority is captured in a recording that radiates warmth and presence from top to bottom. Musically speaking, though, Onczay's meticulous attention to detail often spills over into pedanticism. He scrutinizes and worries over the music in such a way that each note stands as a newly minted gem, scrubbed clean of nuance and rhythmic life, and liberated from the dirt and grime of melodic inflection. The results are less like dance movements than solemn etudes tackled with kid gloves. --Jed Distler

A classic example of a technician with a beautiful sound - in fact, a perfectly clean, articulate, resonant cello sound. This man would probably be a great teacher. However, the music of Bach is not brought to life, but is rather placed at the service of this man's craft.

If one can get past the snobbery of equating price with quality, one will find in this recording, as well as the first volume of these cello suites, a good performance. In quantity, each volume contains three suites, the same as any other record label. In both volumes, some of the allemandes tend to be slower than most other performances of it. Technically, the playing is for the most part right on the mark; however, it is not as expressive (or perhaps as emotional) as some others, although the music itself is beautiful enough that it can stand without lack of very expressive playing. The recording is very sonorous. If anyone has heard the sonority of Maurice Gendron's playing on Philips, this goes even beyond that.

As most of the Naxos cds this one is a sure waste of money. Regardless of the low badget, one should not expose himself to such crappy playing. With a little more money one can buy far better interpretations, and the question is what do we prefer quality or quantity?

Excellent collection of peaceful music........1999-08-17

If you are looking for music that can soothe the soul, buy this collection. Each cd has a collection of excerpts from classical artists which are peaceful in style. Works from big-time composers such as Beethoven and Bach are included, but many outstanding pieces are drawn from lesser known artists such as Godard and Paganini. I use these cds as background music at work, where the wide swings in volume found in most of classical music would be inappropriate. As always with Naxos, the recordings are of excellent quality.
