We are using this series of CDs in our homeschool music program - they are fantastic! We especially love this one about Bach - what an awesome man! The story of his life is told in a way that is very interesting and holds the children's attention while also using various pieces of his music in the narration. It is done VERY well! My children are gaining a tremendous amount of knowlege and appreciation for music through this CD and so are my husband and I!

3 out of 5 stars Decidedly Dorian.......2005-10-23

Jackie Allen's is one of the most distinctive, inimitable voices on the scene today, as musicianly and versatile as it is intimate and sexy. If a program and instrumentation such as this wins her the larger audience she richly deserves, I'm all for it.

As for the program, it's of a decidedly monochromatic blue hue--owing much to the influence of Joni Mitchell, Melissa Manchester, Tori Amos, Carly Simon, and singers in that eclectic area outside of the "Great American Songbook." Nothing necessarily wrong with that. Sinatra could put out albums made up exclusively of "suicide songs" ("Only the Lonely," "In the Wee Small Hours," "No One Cares," "September of My Years") and transform them into breathtaking elegy. But he was also served by the ingenious harmonic ambivalence of Cole Porter and Harold Arlen, the lyric poetry of Lorenz Hart and John Mercer, the orchestral expressiveness of Nelson Riddle and Gordon Jenkins. Consequently, the mood did not begin to wear on me as I confess it does on the present collection, where modality replaces shifting harmonies and recitative supplants verse.

In all fairness, Jackie does include a couple of genuine standards ("Lazy Afternoon" and "I'll Be Around") and a couple that probably don't deserve to be ("Love Is Blue" and "Taste of Honey"). But the arrangements, orchestrations, and approach tend to minimize differences, contrasts and tensions in the material.

There's a jazz sensibility about her approach to all of the songs, as rightly recognized by those reviewers familiar with her previous work. But perhaps in the interest of catching the attention of new and younger ears, it's best not to tell.

4 out of 5 stars the afternoon starts sunny, then gets dark.......2004-09-09

The afternoon starts sunny, then gets dark.

Now here is a Pop Jazz Vocal that draws me in. Sensual. Sexy. I think it's Jazz! Now why did she say that?

Really a concept album, but it's hard to say what the concept is - relationships gone wrong? Love the first track, about love in the afternoon, it's warm and sunny like brandy. The mood seems to get darker throughout. "Moon of Deception" is moody, By "Turnin Round" she sounds obsessive, almost like Patricia Barber. A slowed down "Taste of Honey", miles from the Beatles. Ends with a torchy rendition of the ultimate torch song, "I'll be Around".

For the life of me I can't understand why this album isn't more popular. I guess people haven't heard it and it doesn't get airplay. So it's a vicious circle.

Contrary to what's said below, this CD is a much more energy, more involving and captivating album than Diana Krall's listless "Girl in the Other Room". In fact, it has everything DK's new album is missing. Slowed, without dropping off. Has a lot more heart!

4 1/2 to 5 stars performance, on my tough grading system. well recorded. Would get 5 stars, if it were more popular. One of the best of the year. It grows on you. A find! See my recommended list!

5 out of 5 stars It's not jazz; but it's really good.......2004-08-12

Sometimes the line between jazz and progressive rock is really thin. Consider, for example, Ginger Baker's album, ca. 1994, with Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden ("Goin' Back Home"): jazz or rock? Or consider Joni Mitchell's "Night Ride Home" and "Turbulent Indigo" albums from the early '90's: jazz or rock?

This album straddles the same thin line. But I'm no purist: I really like the Ginger Baker and Joni Mitchell albums; and I really like this one, too.

Jackie Allen is a singer who usually sounds like Sheryl Crow, but when in her upper register, sounds purer than that. Her performance is enhanced by her band, a group of superb musicians. In "Men in My Life", John Moulder (g), Hans Sturm (b) and Dane Richeson (per) proved themselves to be very proficient jazz musicians. Here, they prove themselves to be very proficient rock musicians. Let's just say they are very proficient.

And whereas the pianist in "Men" was the wonderful Ben Lewis, here the pianist is the wonderful Laurence Hobgood, ordinarily Kurt Elling's accompanist. He provides the highlight of the album, an arrangement of the title track complete with his wispy solo. The original popular version was that soupy thing done by the Paul Mariat Orchestra, ca. 1968. This version is so dark that it takes awhile to figure out the song; but the darkness fits the words to a tee. To say the least, it is a vast improvement over the popular original.

Other highlights: a similar treatment of "A Taste of Honey", which is likewise a quantum improvement over the familiar version done in the '60's by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass; Hans Sturm's "Turnin' Round," a Wallace Stephens type of poem with variations on the word and syllable "turn" in just about every imaginable concept to a heavy bass backbeat in A minor; the one jazz standard, Alec Wilder's wonderful "I'll Be Around," complete with some very tasteful guitar licks from Moulder; and a terrific original, Jackie Allen's "Moon of Deception." The more I listen to this album, the more I may be convinced that this is actually its highlight: it ought to be a "standard in the making."

Truthfully, this whole album initially hit me at 4 and 1/2. But I like it the more I hear it; and until Ms. Allen becomes better known, I'll upgrade her to 5. If you liked Diana Krall's recent "The Girl in the Other Room", you'll probably like this album even more, given the similarities between the two. One thing I guarantee you: if you play this c.d. for someone who has never heard it and never heard of Jackie Allen, they'll never guess it in a million years. RC

5 out of 5 stars One of Best Jazz Singers You Never Heard Of.......2004-06-28

As a Jazz DJ on community radio constantly searching to avoid the too familiar, I have my finger on the pulse of female jazz singers throughout the United States, and the current crop, most of whom are unknown to the general public, is really outstanding. I mean real jazz singers, not Nora Jones. Jackie Allen is awfully close to the top of the list. This latest album only reaffirms the emotional depth, style, inventiveness, and sophistication of this marvelous artist who, after many years honing her craft in the mid-west, is beginnng to get a little of the recognition she deserves. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Concept Album with Emotional Impact.......2004-06-26

It's been so long since I've heard a "concept album" of the kind the (...) used to produce that LOVE IS BLUE caught me completely off guard. After her success with THE MEN IN MY LIFE, which featured fresh interpretations of some very well known pop tunes, the song selections on Allen's new CD: a couple of '60s instrumentals, a new Annie Lennox song, the chestnut "I'll Be Around" and originals by Allen and members of her ensemble struck me as eccentric. But anyone who has heard Jackie Allen perform live can attest to the way she commands a room with a Largo tempo and a meditative lyric. The combination of emotional vulnerability, instinctive musicality and the sheer beauty of her voice is a potent combination. Producer Rob Mathes, who has worked with Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Sade, and a host of other pop performers has capitalized on that strength for a first person narrative of a doomed love affair told from the perspective of the woman left behind. The romance that begins with the temptations of a "Lazy Afternoon" and ends with the stiff-upper-lip farewell of "I'll Be Around" is so compelling because its protagonist is seductive ("You Become My Song"), sensual ("Taste of Honey"), independent ("Go"), optimistic ("Here Today"), playful ("The Performer", "Turnin' Round"), self-aware ("Pavement Cracks", "Love is Blue"), and incurably romantic ("Moon of Deception"). Give yourself the time to listen to this CD from start to finish and, far from blue, you will be exhilarated by its emotional impact.

4 out of 5 stars Superb singing, annoying accent in places.......2006-01-02

This well-known Finnish chamber choir really know what to do with this material in order to create the multi-layered, mystical atmosphere suggested by Penderecki's score with occasional outbursts of dramatic expressivity. A very well-balanced choir with wonderful choral voices.

Sadly, in some places, their Finnish accent breaks through in a way that suggests someone should have paid some extra attention to pronounciation before recording (Stabat matEEEEr).

In all other ways, though, this record is very well worth owning. A great perfomance.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful.......2001-12-11

It is a good thing that this album presents its music in chronological order. It is also a good thing that Penderecki essentially became less modern as his musical career has advanced. For without these two factors, the immediate and almost frightening impact of this album would not be possible.

This album opens with Stabat Mater which was a choir work written as a movement within Penderecki's "St Luke's Passion", completed in 1962. It is a very modern work that utilizes numerous vocal and musical techniques (cannons, counterpoint, droning, tone clusters, chanting, whispering) and is laced with great passion throughout. Combining the quality of the piece, the quality of the performance (it is difficult to truly understand how incredibly difficult these works are), and the quality of the recording can almost assure anyone of a near transcendent experience into the profound passion that Penderecki has for his faith.

Every track on this album is solid in performance, recording quality, and of course in composition.

For an honest and profound glimpse into the possibilities of the choral medium within the 20th century, be sure to check out this album and all of its richness.

5 out of 5 stars If you're brave enough to listen to truly modern music..........2001-10-19

...then give this one a listen. To be honest, I don't own this collection, but I have several of these pieces on vinyl. As my friend, Loce the Wizard, pointed out after hearing the Magnificat at my house, "This is how religious music should sound." Be prepared for atmospheric music similar to some of the abstract scenes without dialogue in "2001: A Space Odyssey" (which, if I'm not mistaken, used music by Penderecki, along with Ligeti and others). If you think 20th century music is the tripe written by John Williams for "Star Wars", then don't bother.

A fascinating step back in time, this--a live performance in Symphony Hall, Boston, on Good Friday 1937, with several refugees from Nazi Germany among the performers. Never mind the variable sound (generally, it's more than acceptable), the RCA engineers performed miracles during a nerve-jangling, one-chance-only exercise. You would expect a more obviously reverential performance than today's practice, but while speeds are indeed achingly slow at times, and what we would hear as sentimentality does show through (how Jeanette Vreeland scoops and swoops), there are fascinating glimpses of "modern" Bach style. For example, the choruses (as opposed to chorales, which crawl along) have plenty of bite and dramatic character; those that open and close the work have a surprisingly natural flow. Credit the legendary Koussevitsky--most obviously associated with the contemporary music of his day--for apparently thinking plenty out afresh. And original instruments (praise be!) have a place, not least a harpsichord to accompany recitatives. John Priebe is strangely slow to warm up as the Evangelist, but gets there in the end. Katherine Meisle impresses, but the star performer is British baritone Keith Faulkner as Jesus. Rocklike sound allied to intelligence and personality. --Andrew Green

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable performances of Handel and Mozart........2001-10-21

I first heard recordings by the Danish tenor Aksel Schiotz in the 1970s, not long after he died. The particular recordings were "Comfort Ye" and "Ev'ry Valley Shall Be Exalted" from "The Messiah." Since then, every other tenor singing those pieces has sounded terminally asthmatic to me. None has had Schiotz's bell-like high notes or remarkable fluency and breath control. This CD has those "Messiah" cuts, as well as beautiful performances of Mozart, Bach, and Dowland. Schiotz, who lived from 1906 to 1975, did not have a particularly powerful or colorful voice, but he more than made up for that with the purity and warmth of his tone. Unfortunately, Schiotz had a blighted life. Just as he was set to begin his international career, the Nazis invaded his native land. He became a hero of the Danish Resistance, but in 1946, while singing in London to great acclaim, he suffered a tumor of the acoustic nerve. He nearly died, and was robbed of the ability to either speak or sing. A horrendous two-year struggle finally brought him back to the concert hall--this time as a baritone--but his voice had lost its unique beauty. It is the recordings from 1938-46 that will remain his legacy, and the recordings on this CD are his finest.

J.S. Bach's fascination with numbers has been taken over by the music world at large as--in alignment with the new millennium--it prepares to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, which occurred in July 1750. Though his passing marked the sunset of one of the most glorious eras in music, awareness of the value of Bach's enormous legacy has never been more widespread than in our own time. As evidence, just take the spectrum of recordings scheduled to honor the Bach anniversary. This sampler offers a glimpse of the most ambitious of them all: Teldec's Bach 2000 box set, a 153-CD mountain of music consisting of the composer's entire output of over 1,000 works. The majority of these recordings have been previously released over the last several decades in various guises, but for the first time they are being gathered into a unified edition. Its guiding spirit is Nikolaus Harnoncourt, one of the pioneers of the revolution in historical performance practice, and he is similarly represented in 8 of the sampler's 18 selections. Among the other artists to savor here--and at beguiling length in the full set--are Harnoncourt's early-music ally Gustav Leonhardt, eloquent violinist Thomas Zehetmair, Il Giardino Armonico, and organist Ton Koopman (in a majestically architectural account of the D Minor Toccata and Fugue). And even though at 77 minutes this is just 1/150th of the whole Bach, you don't need to do the math to be swept away in pleasure. --Thomas May

4 out of 5 stars Might be hard to find, but..........2004-02-03

This is a great and relatively inexpensive introduction to the world of Bach. If you know nothing about Bach, the tunes on this disc will wake you up to just how influential and necessary he is in the history of classical music. "It all started with Bach" is not too extreme a position to take, especially if you follow up this recording with a listen to the complete Mass in B Minor, or the St.Matthew Passion or St.John's Passion, or some of his Cantatas. You'll suddenly realize that you've been listening to Bach your entire life.

This disc may now be hard to find because it was probably meant for limited release as a "teaser" for the Bach 2000 bajillion disc set. Nonetheless, if you can get it it's a good buy, especially since the accompanying booklet includes biographical info and other tidbits. Be warned, though, the world of Bach's music is enormous and may take over your life (not to mention the physical hazard of being crushed by the Bach 2000 boxed set).

4 out of 5 stars Jolly "old" St. Nik-Harnoncourt and his elves.......2001-06-20

At first I was a bit dissapointed when I ripped off the plastic wrapping, because it bothers me to have a disc without the standard jewl case. I am a bit familar with Ton Koopman, but the Toccata and Fugue wasn't "da bomb" for two reasons: He uses the same registration, I will pardon him if the design of the organ would not let you change stops in a hurry. His ornamentation is a bit exagerated, and amusing to the point of obserdady (pardon the spelling, or typing)but, nevertheless it is a good recording, and wonderful playing. Cantata 147 was played at a rather fast tempo (about 92). The lute harpsichord peice seems to technically be a bad recording. Track #18's pauken part is so loud you the listener can barely hear the trompetes and floten. All in all I am quite pleased that I own this CD and it is a good highlight of Bach's works. I must say that I probably won't buy the Teldec complete set, but you never know!

          5 out of 5 stars Review.......2001-04-24

I didn't have enough money to buy the 151 CD set, but I did have enough to buy the sampler. This CD probably has the best version of "Toccata and Fuge in D minor" that I've ever heard. One can literally feel each chord flowing through their veins. My other favories are "Suite in C minor" and "Trio Sonata in G major". Well worth the [discounted] price, and a good introduction to Bach's music.

          4 out of 5 stars Bach 2000 in a nutshell........2000-09-27

For the price, this is worth the money just for a "Best of Bach" sampler CD (that's why I originally bought it.) and it sounds nice, and it's Bach. What is more to be said?

However, as stated in the liner notes, the performances were created with the intention to sound the way scholers believe that they would have sounded in Bach's time. So, this means not only period instruments, but also these works sound much different that the Bach most of us are accustomed to hearing.

Personally, I prefer the modern sound of bach over the hardcore baroque - the works here sound a bit more restrained than the Bach that many of us have come to know and love. I for one prefer the more modern Bach that artists such as Glenn Gould, Virgil Fox and others have presented to us.

This is worth a listen, though, and if you are considering purchasing some or all of the Bach 2000 CDs, you definitely should sample this CD first to determine if the set is for you.

4 out of 5 stars An Intro To The Complete Bach Edition Bach 2000 Sampler.......2000-08-05

I think it is an excellent introduction to Bach. Although I have always liked him, I've never purchased recordings of his work(s). I have to admit- it has me looking for more recordings. Nice- and the recordings are crisp and clear (even on my old player). I recommend it highly!
