Continuing a collaboration started over ten years ago with a performance at Tanglewood of Schubert's "Die Schoene Muellerin", Benjamin Luxon and Frederick Moyer have now turned to the little-explored genre of music for piano and speaker. This pairing of Glenn Gould and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is an essential asset to the collection of any lover of the vocal repertoire. Strauss's "Ophelia" suggests that the last word on German lied had not yet been sounded by the 20th century. Gould's interpretation is not, of course, lushly romantic; it's endowed with his unmistakable, brilliant clarity, and casts a new light. As always, to hear Gould tackle any repertoire remains astonishing. --Joshua Cody

An Interesting GG Set..........2004-05-11

Tennyson's Enoch Arden, edited and set for recital with musical interludes. I've always liked Claude Rains; and, needless to say, GG is superb here: my only complaint is rather in the form of a wish or suggestion: I wish GG (or Sony) had simply released GG playing Strauss' music without recitation. Why? While Rains is great, and the poem is nice--a few times around--it later wears thin: its dated Victorian sentimentality. We end up hearing more Rains and Tennyson than GG and Strauss. Still, this is a unique and interesting performance; and GG's realization of Strauss' piano music is scintillating. The earlier Piano Sonata is great, as well as the Klavierstucke.

GG's collaboration with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is infamous. GG always admired Dame Liz; and he wanted to record many lieder with her (viz., Schoenberg's, Hindemith's, etc.). The problem was this: Gould wanted to lead in the aesthetic realization of any collaboration. He was able to do so with Menuin, Laredo, and some lesser vocalists, etc.; however, Schwarzkopf was not to be outdone: she was already a great and respected soloist, and she found GG's eccentric vision for realization too unusual. Indeed, she took offense at GG's playing of the songs. So, after a few cuts, the session was called off short--and that was that. Well, what can one say? Sometimes great minds don't always work well together.

It goes without saying (so why say it except for emphasis!) that John Vickers was among the greatest opera singers of all time. His bellowing voice proved a tremendous asset in his greatest roles, such as Florestan in Fidelio. But in Enoch Arden, his I-am-the-Voice-of-God approach and histrionic declamation is ill suited to the intimacies of the text and the music; after a short while, even the most discrete asides and eloquent rhetoric begin to sound pompous and bloated. Vickers was a grand singer, but his skills as an actor prove less than compelling here as he sinks into a kind of sing-song pattern throughout, with little if any variance of either mood or the characters portrayed. Though some may find it admirable that he takes no cuts, as the far superior union of Gould/Rains does, his decision to recite the entire 85 plus minutes is tiresome and unnecessary; it also compromises the interaction with the music.The recording quality suffers,too, as it was made in concert. Hamelin's piano playing comes off as glib, probably made all the more so by the watery underwater acoustics which the engineer did nothing to disavow. In fact, both volume and equalization are poorly controlled, and passagework drifts in and out like an unconscious person aroused from a coma. Vickers apology to the audience, following its applause, for having taken up so much of their time is inexplicably left on the CD, and suggests that he doesn't have too much faith either in the performance or in the piece itself. Our advice: Stick to the Gould/Rains disc, which is the classic in this piece. There are two new performances which we've heard great things about, but have not yet heard: one by famed actor Michael York and the other with another formidable but now retired singer, Benjamin Luxon. Stay tuned and we will report on these too.

An amazing story and talent.......2001-03-20

Many of the talents that made Jon Vickers great in Opera continue to serve him (and us) well as a story teller. His wonderful voice, combined with his ability to convey deep emotion, reach out and draw you into the story. You cannot help but experience the love and joy as well as the pain and anguish of each of the characters in the story. Mr. Vickers is a very rare and wonderful combination of so many talents, and yet performs with a humble reverance for whatever art form he applies himself to.

What a compelling way to tell a story. Vickers does it again as he adds a grandios appeal to a sweet, yet sad tale of Enoch's journey. Vicker's thundering voice wraps you in his arms and draws you into the story and does not let go. Once again, the legendary opera genius creates a performance that will never be forgotten.

Great, but..........2004-05-04

This is a very important documentary of arguably the greatest singer of the twentieth century. The interviewer and Mr. Vickers touch on fabulous anecdotes and background information, which is a priceless treasure. The collection of recording excerpts is a tantalyzing overview of Mr. Vickers' amazing repetoire, but couldn't they be just a little less "clipped"? In other words, the only drawback to this cd is that a little more balance in favour of the music would have made it perfect. As it is, this is a welcome addition to my music library.

Intriguing, but...........2004-05-04

This interview/recording clip collection is absolutely fascinating. Many interesting anecdotes and insights are provided by the interviewer and especially by Mr. Vickers. The recording clips are tantalizing and exquisite, but in some instances frustratingly short! The broad range of material underscores why Jon Vickers is considered by many as one of THE great singers of the twentieth century.
I highly recommend this recording as an important historic document and a glimpse of a truly great artist.
