Essential Sibelius!!!.......2006-02-28

The "Orchestral Favorites with Photo Album" CD on the Ondine label is an excellent beginners guide to the music of the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. While some essential pieces are missing here (notably excerpts from his monumental symphonies), this disc still offers some prime examples of Sibelius's best work including the Karelia Suite, his Valse Triste, the tone poems "Pohjola's Daughter" and "Swan of Tuonela", excerpts from "The Tempest" play and his all-time classic opus "Finlandia" which is taken at a slightly slower tempo than usual on this disc. Of special interest to die-hard Sibelians is the inclusion of the "Andante Festivo" which is conducted by Sibelius himself. This 1939 recording is not only notable for featuring the composer as conductor, it is also the only recording that exists of Sibelius interpreting his own music - a defining historic moment that is worth the price of this CD alone.
In addition to the excellent music heard here, this CD also includes a generously compiled 42-page photo album which features many historic photos of Sibelius throughout his lifetime from childhood to retirement. The booklet also includes a detailed essay on Sibelius's life and a timeline of key moments in the composer's career.
This is definitely a well-put together document both musically and visually of this masterful genius. The music as well as the booklet are a fascinating look at the life and work of Jean Sibelius.

For another excellent introduction to Sibelius's music, I also recommend the "Greatest Hits" disc on Sony Music. While the Sony disc duplicates some of the pieces included here, it does include excerpts from masterpieces not featured here such as music from the symphonies and violin concerto.

More Great Sibelius from GSO/Jarvi.......2006-06-02

I recently purchased this 3-disc set new for about 18 bucks, including shipping and handling. Each disc has over 70 mins of music. More importantly, the performances are evocative and highly emotional. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra (of Sweden, for those of you who might not know this) and Neeme Jarvi did a terrific job on the Sibelius Symphonies for the BIS label in the 80s. I have 'em all, and they are my favorite cycle.

These are more recent recordings done by Deutche Grammaphon, with somewhat different engineering, but equally satisfying sound (to me, at least). Purchasing this "Trio" was almost a no-brainer, given the price. Now that I have the set in hand (and in CD-player), I know that it was a good decision.

Whether you know nothing about Sibelius but want to hear terrific classical music-making, or you have some Sibelius and would like to hear some arguably definitive performance of the tone poems, this set is for you.

Tons of Great Sibelius, All Very Well Done.......2006-05-23

I may be in a minority, but I think Sibelius is a far more successful composer of program music than of so-called absolute music. In fact, his most successful symphony, No. 2, has a definite program, and his most successful symphonic movement, the marvelous finale of Symphony No. 5, is also pictorial, supposedly inspired by a flight of geese and the bell-like music that their calls made as they passed overhead. So I believe these generously filled discs in the Trio Series present some of the best of orchestral Sibelius, including "Pohjola's Daughter," "En Saga," "The Oceanides," and "Tapiola." There are other favorites as well, of course, including "Finlandia," "Valse Triste," and "The Swan of Tuonela" (part of the spacious "Four Legends"), as well as some lesser-known (to non-Sibelians, anyway) masterworks such as "Luonnotar" and "Night Ride and Sunrise," a quirky, more interesting incarnation of the binary form that Sibelius tried out in the finale of his Third Symphony.

There's still more and more, including some music (such as "King Christian" and "The Bard") that is rarely heard but well worth hearing. In fact, if there are any clunkers here, I don't know of them. Sibelius emerges as a composer who rarely failed when inspired by literature, especially his beloved Kalevala, or the purely pictorial. Neemi Jarvi, whose baton is sometimes too fleet and whose interpretations sometimes skate along the surface of the music, is here inspired to give some of his finest interpretations (and there are many, many on CD). The Goteborg Orchestra has this music in its blood and proves the perfect medium for the dark vision of "The Four Legends," for the shimmer and sheen of "The Oceanides," or for the easy folksiness of "Karelia" and "King Christian." Fine, wide-ranging sound from DG as well. It's up-front but not oppressive, allowing woodwind and percussion detail to emerge with real clarity. Try "Night Ride and Sunrise" as an example; it's rarely sounded this alive in recording.

this is a great set of Sibelius's work. There are some of unknown as as well known pieces. I recommend this work to introduce people to Sibelius and Sibelian's as well. neeme jarvi is a master interpreter of Sibelius work and the orchestra is brillent.

Rare recording of Tsar's Coronation.......2000-08-09

People who are interested in the Romanov dynasty will want to get a copy of his historic recording of Sibelius' Cantata for the coronation of Nicholas II. The sound is great and the performance is brisk and even a bit pushy at times. The notes that came with the recording say that this piece has never been performed since it was first given in 1896. It's an interesting piece and I am glad I bought the CD. The other selections on the CD are fun to listen to, charming, fresh and uplifting. I felt like running through a grassy meadow after listening to this CD! The performance of Finlandia seems to have been thrown in to help sales of the other selections on this CD which are all rare. Its' a good rendition.

Excellent in musical terms, if not in orchestral playing.......2007-06-24

This CD has been reissued as part of a bargain two-fer from EMI, giving us a fair sample of Jansons' early workwith Sibelius when he was a rising star with the Oslo Phil. It was recordings like this one of Sym. #2 that made his reputation, although I must say the recent remake with the Concertgebouw on that orchestra's house label turned out to be dullish. Here there's lot os spirit and conviciton. You get the feeling in eery bar that the Oslo musicians are playing music that's in their blood, and even better, the level of execution rises higher than what we hear from provinical Finnish orchestras.

Thankfully, Jansons doesn't try to be profound in the first movement, playing it for propulsion and pace. The result is one of the more exciting versions on disc. The second movement is a bit of a let down rhythmically, but nowhere as much as Colin Davis in his various genteel readings. The brass-dominated climaxes bring us into the stirring world of finlandia quite effectively. The Oslo strings aren't quite up to the Vivacissimo marking of the third movement -- you won't mistkae this for the NY Phil. under Bernstein or the Berlin Phil. under Karajan. The finale is dramatic but marred by less than first-rate brass playing, which isn't to say that the musicians aren't giving their all. In a field crammed with good but not riveting versions of the ever-popular Second, Jansons' belongs on the top shelf. It's not as emotionally wrenching as the famous Barbirolli account, but I'd put it ahead of Bernstein from Vienna on DG, Ormandy on Sony, Rattle on EMI, and even the sainted Beecham live on BBC Legends. The fillers are also well done, but one misses Karajan's sumptuousness in the Swan of Tuonela and Stokowski's hypnotic atmosphere.
