Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Premier Bach Series Recording.......2007-03-26

I purchased these recordings nearly 20 years ago, when Deutsche Gramophone was still selling them as five individual discs, and at over $20 per disc. With the re-release of the set of all five discs in a single, price-reduced "Collectors Edition" box set, the price has fallen by more than half, making this one of the outstanding values for high-quality Bach recordings on today's market.

But what about the performances? Here's the best way I can sum it up. Having listened to these disks for some two decades, in the car, on the main home stereo system, on portable equipment, on the boom box, and etc., etc., it is, I imagine, inevitable that one ends up memorizing nearly every note. And with that familiarity comes the ability to detect flaws in the performance, missteps, missed beats, the occasional off-tone instrument. Here's the rub: it is difficult to locate any significant flaw in the performances. These performances are about as perfect as one can get, but having said that, there is more. The sound reproduction of this recording remains near or at the top of any Bach recordings with which I've become familiar, and remains in my own thinking the de facto standard by which other performances should be measured.

Sound too good to be true? Pick up a set and see for yourself. And then relish the thought that you paid $40 for a set worth far more.

5 out of 5 stars A nice way to complete your collection of Bach's concertos..........2007-02-21

...and cheap to boot. This, paired with the Brandenburg Concertos/Overtures compilation from Arkiv (also featuring Pinnock and the English Concert), gives any new Bach fan a fairly complete account of Bach's instrumental orchestral output. This particular package includes all of Bach's keyboard concertos (played exceptionally well by Pinnock), all of his violin concertos, and also his Triple Concerto (Harpsicord, Flute and Violin), several works for Oboe and Oboe D'Amour, and several double concertos (2 violins, and oboe and violin). Highlights are the D Minor Harpsicord concerto BWV 1052, the C Major concerto for 2 Harpsicords BWV 1061, the Oboe D'Amour concerto BWV 1055, the double concerto BWV 1060, and the violin concertos.
This set sounds fantastic and is a great value to boot. Strongly recommended for those who loved Bach's Bradenburg concertos and Overtures and are looking for something new to sink their teeth into.

5 out of 5 stars "Best Bach - Box Set".......2005-11-06

This is undoubtedly the best Back box set I have heard. These Concerto's for Harsichord, Violin, Flute and Oboe are among the finest in classical music. Although the Harpsichord volume level could have been a bit higher overall the recordings are very good. I am very pleased with this CD set with so much music at a very good price. This is truly a collectors gem.

4 out of 5 stars Pinnock is good performer.......2005-09-30

Pinnock is good performer...I drop one start because BWV 1052-58
Might sound better when it's played piano.

5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Value.......2004-12-15

This set offers unbeatable value. The performances are uniformly excellent. Pinnock's Bach is brisk and sprightly when it should be, but also tender and relaxed when it must be. He is not afraid to slow down and savour the music, unlike many period-performance specialists. He is one of the world's great harpsichordists and his partners in the multiple concerti are also excellent. Simon Standage yields nothing to better-known soloists in the violin concerti.

The sound is clear, deep, and only a little bit on the bright side.

While you're at it, buy the Pinnock/English Concert complete Mozart symphonies. Sure, Mozart's first fifteen or so aren't anything special, but the set is superb and the price unbelievable.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Playing!.......2005-02-06

Please see my review of volume 4 of this series. This disc is equally inspiring!

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly Musical Time Machine ~~.......2003-10-24

I love the sound od Harpsichord when they are in Baroque music. However, there are a lot of Baroque ablum outside, but few of them gives so beautiful and complete performance like this one !

I listen to it when I need relax; I listen to it when I need to concentrate (like study). I just put it in the CD player and let the harmony fill the air for as long as I want.

Also, you can not miss is there are more that Bach's masterpiece !! From track 10, Vivaldi comes in to play. "Concerto in B minor" was the theme for the movie "Dangerous Liasons" of Michelle Phiffier and Gleen Close, which combined the enchanting sound of 4 violins and the harpsichord. You will indulge to it once you listen to it.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the price fool you.......2002-01-25

I'm often skeptical of CDs with low prices, because generally, they turn out to be poor recordings. This is one of the exceptions to that rule. The recording is crisp, clean, and accurate. Bach's Harpsichord Concertos have always been among my favorites, and this CD (along with the other 2 CDs in the Harpsichord Concertos set) contains some of the best recordings that I've heard. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent version (but not the best).......2001-11-30

As I have said in other music reviews I tend to review the music and so i give this recording a full 5 stars. However, I have heard and own several recordings (incl. this one) of the Bach piano concertos and i find this one to feature a tempo that is too slow for my taste. Having said that, the interpreters are excellent and if you like your Bach a little 'slower' then this the version for you. I do love the balance between the piano and the orchestra and the clarity of each note. for thsoe new to this music, I think the first mov. of the BWV 1052 concerto and the 2nd of the BWV 1056 are the highlights.
My favorite recording of the Bach concertos for piano is perhaps somewhat obscure now. It is performed by Cyprien Katsaris with the Liszt Chamber Orchestra. Once you hear the BWV 1052 played at that speed - with an excellent bass accent in the first mov.- you will find hard to appreciate other versons. However, I have found Maria Joao Pires to approach the same effect. Other than that the music is amazing. I'm listening to it as i write and can't stop tapping my feet, snapping fingers and loving every note.

5 out of 5 stars An edition to take into account!.......2007-04-04

The role of conductor of Yehudi Menuhin tends to be overlooked because its fame as renowned soloist and the final result of this wrong assertion has been the neglect of many of his conducted works like this one for instance. This set stands out among the most prestigious and brilliant ever made. You may regard them a little romantic but even so, the profound vitality and supreme commitment of Menuhin as director may be carved in relief.

So, please, flee all skepticism in which concerns this album and go without hesitating. It' s a worthwhile edition

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgic work in the best pre-period performance style.......2006-11-17

This box is a nostalgic event for anyone that started listening to and collecting Bach recordings in the post World War II era. It is, indeed, an exemplar of the way Bach was interpreted in the "new" authenticity of the postwar period where Karl Munchinger and Pablo Casals were among the better interpreters of the composer.

In fact, the way Yehudi Menhuin leads the Bath Festival Orchestra in his readings of the Four Orchestral Suites reminds me very much of that old 2-LP set I had by Casals and the Marlboro Orchestra way back when. Denis Clift's trumpeting in the Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, more than any other recording of the music I've heard, reminds me of the opening of William Buckley's weekly polticial talk show that used to be on PBS in the 1970s. And George Malcolm's loving playing of Largo from the Harpsichord Concerto in F, BWV 1056, reminds me of its use in Woody Allen's film "Hannah and Her Sisters".

So is there more to this set than nostalgia? That depends on your perspective. If you are under age 40 and have been raised in the Speedy Gonzales period practice performance environment of ancient instruments, sour woodwinds, wiry strings and off-pitch playing, you may not immediately find equal enjoyment in this set.

If you are broad-minded about Bach performance you'll find a set that includes almost every significant piece of "orchestral" music by Bach performed with rapt attention, British reserve, and much love and kindness in andantes and largos. Even that old intellectual exercise for musicians, The Art of Fugue, is played musically and has allure for nonplayers who simply listen to the music without a score.

One significant caveat for all listeners: the middle section of the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 substitutes a lengthy unBachian movement arranged by British composer Benjamin Britten. Critics often said Britten's recording of the Brandenburg's was one great composer interpreting another. In this movement, it appears Britten tried to merge with Bach. I wouldn't say the results are completely successful.

Otherwise there are multiple felicities inside this box. While Menhuin gets top billing and has his face plastered on every slipcase, I think harpsichordist George Malcolm is the star of the program. Playing a harpsichored that sounds a lot like the one Lurch played on "The Addams Family" television show of the period, Malcolm is always the arbiter or propriety and good judgment in the various concerti, whether he is playing solo or with partners in 2-, 3- or 4-harpsichored concerti featuring the likes of Thurston Dart, Denis Mathews and Simon Preston. In particular, the concerti BWV 1054, 1060-61 and 1064-65 are wonderfully done with taste, humanity and style.

I would also draw attention to magnificent readings of the Triple Concerto BWV 1044 and the Double Concerto for violin and harpsichored BWV 1066. I think the former concerto, which features marvelous playing by soloists Menhuin on violin, William Bennett on flute, and Malcolm on harpsichord, is one of the most satisfyings readings of this music I've ever heard.

The Bath Festival Orchestra is never less than inspired under Menhuin in the Brandenburg concertos, where they are ably assisted by soloists Malcolm, flutist Elaine Schaffer, and Christopher Taylor on recorder, among others. While Menhuin's style in the Orchestral Suites may seem a tad reserved and deliberate by 21st century PPP standards, they are never less than musically performed and always project the Bach that begot 20-plus children and buried 10 of them and a young wife during his lifetime. There is nary an episode of showmanship or stylistic pursuit for its own purposes; everything is done to illuminate Bach and his message.

Bach's humanity is constantly on display in this wonderfully consistent collection of performances from a past era that is still relevant in today's more wildy colorful, personal and rambunctious epoch. The recordings, which were made from 1956-74, are typical of the crossover from mono to multimiked stereo. Yet the recordings never draw undue attention to themselves; it is the players that draw attention to the composer.

As other reviewers here has said, this is an unusually generous collection of Bach's most popular music on 7 CDs. You don't have to be an old timer to enjoy this collection although it helps. If you are relatively new to Bach, think of this as an exemplar of the way things once were in the very best sense of that affirmation.

5 out of 5 stars Bach and Other Artists.......2006-04-04

I must confess that I'm interested mostly in this collection of Bach's music because the flutist is Elaine Shaffer. My first exposure to her playing was the Bach Flute Sonatas, and that was maybe 25 years ago that I purchased the two volume set on vinyl LP's. And still, 25 years later, I have yet to hear the Sonatas played more beautifully than by by Ms. Shaffer. The flute world owes her a great debt. She was the first female flute concert artist in the world. I'm sorry she came to an early end with lung cancer just two months after recording the Bach Sonatas and the piece for Flute and Piano she had a large part in getting commissioned by Copland in memory of her teacher at Curtis Institute, William Kincaid after his death. Her playing in this recording of Bach pieces with other great artists and the Bath Chamber Orchestra are tastefully and beautifully played, just like everything she played. I mourn her early departure from the music world.

4 out of 5 stars EMI's Bach Bonanza........2004-08-03

I know of no CD issue that packs as much of the orchestral music of J S Bach into one budget-priced box as this issue. Active in and inspiring the performances of all but two of the works is Yehudi Menuhin. He directs these performances while playing either violin or viola. He also attracts eminent fellow instrumentalists to contribute as required, so that the roster reads like a Who's Who of EMI recording artists of the period.

And what is the period? The recordings were made between 1956 and 1973. Ears attuned to contemporary styles of Bach performance will hear things that are different here. Period instruments are not used (if you accept violas da gamba as not strictly "period"). Warmth and affection rather than authenticity and precision characterize performances. The engineering seems aimed at balancing Bach's contrapuntal textures so that everything can be heard, rather than capturing what occurs in actual performance. Accordingly, the harpsichord contributions are audibly prominent, and sometimes they have the capacity to swell and fade in ways that Wanda Landowska might even have thought excessive.

Remastering was done in the 1990s and this compilation was released in 2001.

      5 out of 5 stars Great.......2004-01-17

Ever since seeing the ballet Concerto Barocco I had the music stuck in my head. I found that it was to Bach's concerto for two violins in D minor. Every chance I get to listen to this music I take. It is so intricate and truly magnificent.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but far from great.......2003-01-25

This recording is part of a broader historical release and at that time it was breaking grounds in ways of performing World's greatest composer, J.S. Bach. Concertus Musicus Wien was among the first orchestras to perform (successfully) with original baroque instruments or reconstructions of those. The following review will discuss all of TELDEC's violin concerti 1041-1043 and reconstructed 1052, 1055, 1056, 1060 and 1064, not only the selection provided by this disk.

      BWV1041-1043
However, especially in the violin concertos 1041-1043, influences of old school interpretation are annoyingly apparent. Tempi are too slow and Alice Harnoncourt is less than an extraordinary violonist. Another impediment was Harnoncourt's obsession for syncopated playing (staccato), based on his correct (or not) assumptions about Baroque music. However, I preffer Harnoncourt's reading to much of the modern lightning-speed recordings of HIP school (eg. Manze/Podger).

      BWV1052 (violin)
Harpsichord Concerto in D Minor BWV 1052 was originally written for violin and then transcribed by Bach for harpsichord. Unfortunately, the violin original text has not survived to present times but it has nevertheless triggered scholar's interest on how it might sounded like. Harnoncourt's reading is one of the handful, be that historically informed or uninformed performance. The playing is impecable. Alice Harnoncourt gives here the interpretation of hers lifetime. Sound is crisp, never too slow or too rapid. Orchestral support is outstanding. Five stars with no doubts in mind.

      BWV1055 (oboe)
Although not included into this collection, i will rate it because it's a reconstructed concerto as well. Another outstanding interpretation for this harpsichord piece, performed on oboe, by Jurg Schaefterlin. Same scarcity of similar recordings to compare with. Five stars again with no doubts in mind.

      BWV 1056 (violin)
This is the shame of the Harnoncourt's rather impressive approach on Bach. Not only orchestra sounds bland, absurdly brass-band syncopated, with uncontrolled tempi, but Alice Harnoncourt is very far here from making us believe she was elected to perform for a reason other than she was the wife of the conductor. Menuhin is better, Perlman is better, Biondi is better, although their approach is rather romantic than baroque.

      BWV1060 (oboe & violin)
There are two competing reconstructions of BWV 1060: for two violins (which I preffer) and for oboe & violin (which conductors seem to take as the most accurate). There are very few recordings to compare Harnoncourt's reading with, but his performance is bland and boring, similar to his violin concerti. I heard Pinnock's and should I remind you how MUCH better that is?

      BWV1064 (three violins)
An interpretation of Hogwood/Academy of Ancient Music. Very good but as far as I know there is no other historically informed performance of this piece to compare it with. Nevertheless, an outstanding reading. The basso continuo, as in all other reconstructed concerti is in part provided by Gustav Leonhardt himself.

Christopher Hogwood's jaunty accounts with the Academy of Ancient Music, from 1984, are characterful though less than impressively recorded. The personnel are outstanding (showing the strength of the London scene even then), with the only drawback being the weak solo trumpet of Friedemann Immer in Concerto No. 2. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performances .......2006-11-19

I must confess I am usually a less than totally convinced AAM afficionado so when I did a complete review of all of the best known cycles of the Brandenburgs I acquired this one just to see what the fuss was about. To my great surprise, the results was one of the really outstanding set of the Brandenburg currently available. The quality of the playing has the usual 'crispness' that AAM admirers praise, but above all they had eloquence, taste, and unforced brilliance. The quality of the ensemble playing is truly a joy to listen to over and over. I had a lot of trouble prying myself away. In fact I think I have enjoyed this recording more than any over recording by Hogwood et al. than I ever have recalled hearing over the past 10 - 15 years.

It is also well known that many of the performances are of earlier versions of the Brandenburgs and as a result, this may perhaps should not be the one and only set it that is what you are after. Another added bonus to this particular issue is the inclusion of some other concerti - again the best I have heard any of them played. In fact, they are a major reason to acquire this one over others sets offering only the Brandenburgs without fillers.

The recording itself is beautifully balances, natural, clear and rich. It is a tiny bit on the cleaner analytical side but allows much detail to emerge but this complements the crispness of the ensemble work extremely well.

        Recommended with great enthusiasm!

        5 out of 5 stars Very good.......2005-06-17

Yes, it is a pity that Hogwood chose the original versions: Nº 1 lacks one movement. But to this nice price you get two CDs with a lot of wonderful music. I am not convinced that the original instrument directors usually are more true to the spirit of the baroque era than directors of traditional chamber orchestras. However, here Hogwood gives a performance that is more convincing than a lot of newer "period" performances, which to me often seem more influenced by rock than baroque. I cannot analyse why this happens to appeal so much to me; I think it is really good, honest, straight forward and next to none of the different mannerisms and idiosyncrasies so typical of oh so many "original" interpretations. Production values are good, playing warm and lively. I don't claim that this is the best, but it is the best I have heard for a decade, and I think it is even better than the Savall performances of the Brandenburgs, and that tells a good deal.

2 out of 5 stars Would have been the best but ... .......2005-05-07

I always enjoyed the chamber intimacy Hogwood gave to his players in this recording. Wonderfull interpretations. But it is a pity CH chose the original versions: Nº 1 lacks the 3º movement and the "polacca" section of the 4º movement. The harpsichord solo in the 1st movement of the fifth is severerly shortened (more exactly, Bach expanded a section that was crying for a more extended part). To sum up, you know Bach was a perfectionist. Each thing he revisited, he improved. And he decided to give to Brandenburg Margrave a present, an improved version of his best concerti (in Pickett opinion, it was a kind of allegory). So please don't waste your money in preliminary versions in your first set of brandenburgs. I hope CH make a new recording, one player to a part.

4 out of 5 stars This version is for original instrument enthusiasts.......2005-03-21

Many of the paces are faster than usual and the use of period horns and trumpets creates a distinctively different sound than you'll get with conventional recordings. The Academy of Ancient Music produces really good authentic performances but it should be noted, that Bach would've used the best instruments he would have got his hands on for performing his stuff.

If you plan on getting one version of the Brandenberg Concertos, this is not the one I would recommend. However, if you are a real lover of Bach and are curious as to how his music might have sounded in the 1720's, this is an excellent addition to your music collection.

4 out of 5 stars excellent performance a different view.......2003-09-24

this is an interesting performance of the concertoes.
although the tempo may be a little fast at times and though i prefer the expanded harpsichord version of the fifth concerto, i still recommend this recording in that it brings out the baroque qualities of these works in ways that other recording never do. the part playing is very fine, partially due to the recording process... highly recommended to those who already own a good conventional recording of the work
