Sensuality

Editorial Reviews
Steven Hewitt, Kuelle Magazine
Listeners are in for something special with Elu's "Sensuality 2002," a not to be missed CD.

Album Description
Élu's Jeff Mettling was born in Ada, Minnesota. He began playing violin at the age of 8 and changed to guitar at the age of 10 and formed his first band at the age of 16. He has a passion for music that continues today. He studied music throughout his teenage years and received numerous awards for his musical abilities. He later studied keyboards, bass and drums and has become an accomplished musician. In 1994 he received his first local award for "Best Musical Production" as recognized by the New Mexico Music Industry Association, "NMMIA". For the next eight years he would earn 5 more awards and over 16 nominations for his music. His debut release entitled "LOVE" under the band name "ELU" reached the top 40 on MP3.com and the top 10 on "IUMA". He was also featured as a top 20 artist on the radio show "Dreams of a New Age" 88.1 FM, WMBR in Boston, MA and "Deep Space", Stargate radio program in Italy. The "LOVE" release received rave reviews from Listen.com, Visions Magazine and Kuelle Magazine.

Élu has been described by many listeners as ethereal, meditative and imaginative. His music combines modern drum beats and loops with melodic overtones. Jesse T. of listen.com comments: "If you're ready to go into a state of meditative bliss, Elu can take you there. Quiet, nearly subliminal voices soothe your mind while layers of ambient synthesizer massage your senses."

A greatest-hits package sampling four Enigma discs released between 1990 and 2000, LSD splendidly documents the influential output of Michael Cretu, a techno-bohemian who successfully creates cinematic, otherworldly New Age-like musical suites. Now, more than a decade removed from the arrival of Sadeness (Part 1) and its eyebrow-raising mix of sacred and sensual subplots, people can debate whether Cretu's music represents savvy commercial calculation or satisfying art. LSD suggests a split decision, though tracks with intriguing blends of atmosphere and rhythm, such as "Gravity of Love," "T.N.T. for the Brain" and "Morphing Thru Time," reveal an inventiveness that demonstrates Cretu is capable of more than sophisticated novelty tunes. Two new songs, neither especially noteworthy, open this package. Meanwhile, remastered older tracks segue beautifully to exude a satisfying, seamless unity. Big bonus: run time exceeds 76 minutes. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars My first exposure to Enigma will not be my last.......2007-07-02

I ignored the numerous suggestions to buy Enigma til I found LSD in a used record store. The price was good and I figured I had nothing to lose. Wow--did I get a good deal! The CD is amazing, the music's varied and I get a good taste of what I should have bought long ago. I really can't add more to the excellent reviews already in place, but if you love world and fusion type music, you need to give this CD a try--and yes, it's worth full price.

5 out of 5 stars Gravity of Love.......2007-07-01

Ruth Ann is the lead vocal for Gravity of Love. It's a gorgeous song! This whole album is worth adding to your music collection. It is a must have. Check out Michael Cretu's (Enigma) latest production, What About Us, Ruth Ann's first solo album. It is exclusively sold on itunes. You don't need an ipod to get itunes. Change the setting to MP3! Get Ruth Ann!

5 out of 5 stars I love every bit of it!.......2007-06-09

Just an awesome album that I will recommend, any day any time!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most devoted artists in the field.......2007-05-17

I wrote this three and a half years ago as a 15 year old on a different amazon profile that i am deleting. here is my two cents. I didn't realize then since I was a very naive boy, but the acronym for the title of this album is (and not accidently) LSD. Yes, this album is sonic Lysergic Acid. Or THC, you pick.

Spirituality enhancing music has never been as entrancing and alluring in the history of music. Never have I been so at one and felt so at home with music as I have been with this lush comilation of Enigma's Phase One (first four albums) greatest hits. Almost all of Michael Cretu's music should be on this cd because his music is so inspiring...it takes you on a mind altering journey through sound from which you may wish never to return, simply because of its fresh, pure musical taste.
Many of the tracks that made it on this cd are there because they were on the top of the charts. Not all of them are necesarily his absolute best...I wish songs like "Between Mind and Heart" and "Callas Went Away" were here, but the exclusion of those songs doesn't deteriorate the value. Even if Curly M.C. wanted to put more tracks on his Greatest Hits, he would have had to opt for a second disc because....theres already 74 minutes of pure heaven on the single disc. Anyway, explaining M.C.'s unique vision of music is next to impossible to explain; the songs are a mix of rhythmic beats, breathy vocals, synthed orchestration, and mystical lyrics, which are refrences to the Bible in some parts. Sampling the music is the only way to discover the beauty. Languages include Latin, French, and English. The quality of the synthesized sounds sound like they could have been made yesterday, which is an example of the talent and effort put into every Enigma cd.

Now I may sound like a paid advertiser for Enigma, but I am in reality a very down to earth guy. So I tell it like it is. This review is no exeption. The samples so kindly provided by Amazon above are not the best...M.C. likes to launch each of his cds with slow orchestrations, and then he picks up the pace with the third track. Really, only allowing thirty seconds of sampling doesn't quite do the cd justice. To become absorbed into a piece, you have to listen to the whole thing.

please, dont illegally download music if you do....it hurts the artist from which you are stealing.

4 out of 5 stars Good ol' 90's.......2007-05-17

Great album with unique sound and sexy French voice. Clear sound with slightly heavy bass. Slightly tribal touch, but overall great music. Buy it if you like the previews on Amazon, you will not be disappointed. Relax and enjoy.

awesome, very erotic music, if your into erotic music, danceing or techno, then this is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Like 4 tracks-buy it for iTunes.......2007-01-17

Warning. This is not a new CD like Amazon is misrepresenting here(December 26, 2006). If you look at all the reviews they go back to July 1, 2002.
Now, I would only recommend this CD if you are using Apple iTunes and can delete songs. Rip the CD to iTunes using the AIFF setting. That's non-compressed. Remember, compressed music is destroyed music. Also never download music as that is super compressed. Always buy CD's. But, if your reading this on Amazon, you probably already know this piece of wisdom.
Now, in my opinion much of this CD just doesnt work. The beats are to fast for the Enigma vibe, and there's a lot of cheese going on as well. Also, some of the dance music beats sound dated from 5 years ago.
That being said, there are a few tracks worth buying this CD for, and adding to your iTunes.
Return of innocence (380 Midnight Mix) is super hot, I would buy this CD for that one track alone. Also TNT for the brain (Midnight Man Mix), Mea Culpa (Fading Shades Mix), Principles of Lust (Everlasting Lust Mix) are good.
So I like 4 tracks, delete the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever...ENIGMA's "Love Sensuality Devotion: The Remix Collection .......2007-01-15

So it's 1990-something and I'm 20-something...and life is good. I'm crankin up the stereo to Enigma's Sadeness Pt. 1 from MCMXC a.D., or I'm dancin' to Return To Innocence from The Cross of Changes at my favorite club. Now, fast forward to today: I'm 30-something, and life is STILL good. I may not be dancing the night away at the clubs, but I'm still crankin' up the stereo because Sadeness Pt. 1 AND Return To Innocence have been revamped. Enigma's U.S. release of Love Sensuality Devotion: The Remix Collection makes me think about my old special friend in a fresh, new way. In this new release, the voice of Enigma is BACK with a vengeance.

Good evening, this is the voice of Enigma. Feel your body start to move slowly. Let the rhythm be your guiding light." Intro from "Turn Around, Northern Lights Club Mix" - Love Sensuality Devotion: The Remix Collection (2006).

In this nine track compilation, there is a little something for everyone - Enigma fans past and present. There is a nice mixture of electronica meeting trip hop for those who rave the night away to good music. "Turn Around" has a great beat with synthesizer effects that also gives an ambient, new age edge for those who just wish to relax and meditate. For me, the artistry behind the music of Enigma is still very much a mystery, but one thing is for certain: the fact that they have consistently turned out great beats is NOT a mystery. This album is a collection of greatest hits with the remixes of signature songs like "Age Of Loneliness," "Principles Of Lust," and "Mea Culpa" that I find is easy to listen to whether I'm chilling, working, driving, dancing around my house...it is music that fits in with everything and transcends time with its fresh approach.

This is an essential Enigma collection with reworkings of all their greatest stuff. It's fantastic to listen to and to dance to. I have no "Sadeness" for buying this album.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

      Album Description

A subtle improviser who was beloved by jazz musicians, Lee Wiley sang with a smoldering restraint that always suggested there was a hot fire just beneath the surface. Her appealing voice held a quiet sensuality and indescribable charisma, and she was groundbreaking in her decision to record entire albums dedicated to a single composer. Unwilling to compromise and record inferior pop tunes, overshadowed by singers who fronted swing bands, and later by the rise of rock & roll, Wiley faded into obscurity in the 1960s. This valuable collection returns her to glory, featuring 21 of Wiley's loveliest cuts, collected on a single CD for the very first time, with remastered sound, detailed notes by Scott Yanow and rare historic photos.

        Album Description

VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL: THE STRING TRIBUTE TO BJORK features classic instrumental renditions of her introspective and atmospheric songs. This collection gives an epic sweep to Bjork's songs that resonates with new intensity when performed by these versatile cellists, violists and violinists. VIOLENTLY BEAUTIFUL strips Bjork's sonic testaments to their bare essence, the symphonic arrangements that are the core of her music, the artists using the rich tones of their stringed instruments to capture the true spirit of Bjork's lush and dreamy vocal stylings. An absolute must for even the most casual of Bjork fans...

        5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2006-02-28

From the first time that I heard Bjork's lyrical vocal passages to the first time that I layed ears on her crazy outbursts, I knew she was insane. Bjork has to be one of the most incredibly talented and creative musicians of our time.
This disc can in no way do justice to what Bjork is capable of, but it is a marvelous interpretation of what she has done. The disc features the cello on quite a number of tracks and also employs pizzicato and portimento techniques to capture some of the eerie sounds that Bjork uses on her albums.
This is a remarkable album as a stand alone - and considering how lowsy many of the tribute albums have been lately, it is quite an accomplishment.
I would recommend that everyone - from Bjork fans to John Cage fans alike - invest in this disc. You won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars My Opinion of LSD.......2002-07-06

Enigma's latest release, LoveSensualityDevotion (LSD), is an amazing mix of pensive lyrics and awesome music from all of their album releases. It's kind of like a "greatest hits" album. I had heard of Enigma because I own Pure Moods and thought that their music was like nothing I had heard before. A local retailer was selling LSD for a very inexpensive price, so I figured that I could afford to drop a few dollars for something to listen to.
I was amazed at how wonderful the album was. There are many different styles of music with awesome beats so that everyone can find at least one song that they like. The lyrics don't overpower the music, so it is easy to clean to as well as fall asleep to.
There is one song in particular that exhibits the wonderful lyrics and the powerful music, which is called The Gravity of Love. I get goosebumps when I hear it because it is so moving. Beyond the Invisible is a song that demonstrates the wonderful lyrics that Michael Cretu and others are able to come up with. The song that I believe has the best music would have to be Smell of Desire.

This is a great sultry relaxing CD. The songs are full of emotion and cross quite a few musical genres. Elu is one of the greatest unknown artists out there right now. I hope more people find out about him. I highly recommend this CD!
