Album Description
In early 2002, classic rock giants America thrilled fans with an acoustic concert of their timeless hits. The concert, recorded at the famous SeaView Hotel on Grand Cayman, features such classics as "A Horse With No Name", "Sister Golden Hair", "Ventura Highway" and "I Need You" to name but a few. America fans will delight in the live recordings of such rare gems as "All My Life" and "Pigeon Song". Featuring the soaring harmonies of founders Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell under the setting Caribbean sun, "The Grand Cayman Concert" is a must-have for every music fan.
Customer Reviews:
America Unplugged.......2007-03-25
This live colection is a two-man 'unplugged' effort - just Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, two voices and two acoustic guitars (or one guitar and piano in some instances) - but the sound is surprisingly full given the sparse instrumentation. The set draws heavily on the first two America albums from the early 70s when they were a trio (Dan Peek's been absent for thirty years now) but the songs still work wonderfully in spite of that missing voice. And the fun part is - you can add your own part to re-create the original three-part harmonies. If you've ever been a fan, you'll enjoy this.
America back to Basics.......2007-03-08
America-2 guys and 2 guitars-(or a piano and a guitar) You can't get much more simple than that-and yet this really 'works' on this live album-featuring some of their old favorites-plus some more obscure tracks as well. The winner here is the superb sound of the guitars and voices-beautifully played and recorded. Even if you have all this stuff already it's worth having just to rediscover the great sound of 'America' as they probably sounded when they were sitting around in a living room writing these classic songs. There's a real refreshing intimacy here. Get it !
The Grand Cayman Concert.......2006-03-04
I like America and this was great cd. It brough out the true voices of America. Anyone who likes America will enjoy this cd.
Great acoustic concert in HDCD!.......2006-02-06
For those that care, this cd is encoded as a HDCD, so if you have a HDCD compatible player, this album just sparkles!
Anyway, it is a great recording and performance of just Gerry and Dewey on acoustic guitars and piano. You will not miss the band, these guys can do it all! A very special recording.
I don't know why record labels don't label HDCD's as such when they sell them.
Great acoustic unplugged set by America!.......2003-07-07
I was very pleased with this live CD. Some real gems to be found here...Windwave, All My Life, The Pidgeon Song, and all the classics like Sister Golden Hair, A Horse With No Name, Daisy Jane, make this a great concert in an intimate setting. The harmonies and acoustic guitars really shine, breathing new life to these timeless songs. I highly recommend this CD to any fans of America.

Customer Reviews:
Now if only I owned a convertible!.......2007-06-06
This might be the best "crank it up in your car" CD ever, particularly if you came of age in the 60's and 70's and like all the Beach Boys and other classics on this CD. The live recording quality is quite good, and it rocks all the way through. They're about a good as the artists they are covering.
Live Papa.......2007-05-07
Having been a fan of this group since I purchased California Project some years ago I was unsure if the group could once again reach the level of excellence demonstrated in that album. To my surprise and given that this is a live recording the quality is excellent with smooth laying of tracks and that variation on a theme that is synonymous with live performances. If you like quality instrumentals mixed with excellent voacls then this is fantastic value. Highly recommended album.
Outta Site!!!.......2004-09-05
I just got my copy of Papa Doo Run Run's newest CD "On The Beach". It's OUTTA SITE! These guys sound more like the Beach Boys than the Beach Boys do - and this album is LIVE! Yikes! - move over Mike Love. There's 25 songs here - half of them are BBs songs and the other half are pure gold Classic Rock! My teenage kids even love this CD - go figure! This is real feel good cruisin' music. PDRR's "On The Beach" has found a permanent home in the CD player in my car.
Stunning sound. Tight performance. Papa Doo's best yet!.......2004-08-25
This is a live recording of Papa Doo Run Run's performance on the beach at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk in August 2003. If you haven't heard this band's Beach Boys-like vocal harmonizations, you will be shocked at the likeness. The performance is full of energy and captures well the live atmosphere in which it was recorded. I am amazed at the quality of the sound engineering of this live recording. The highs are crisp, the bass deep and taught, and the dynamic range astounding - a sure test of your audio system's capabilities! It's as close as you can get to actually being there! I would not hesitate to recommend this to anybody who likes "Surf" songs and "Classic Rock Beach Party" tunes!

Torme, Mulligan, and Shearing: Classic indeed!.......2006-07-14
The music on this CD was recorded in performance at Carnegie Hall in 1982 and later broadcast on NPR (the whole concert ran two hours, so this is only a sampling of what went down). Mel Torme is front-and-center on just about all the selections, with Gerry Mulligan's baritone sax and George Shearing's piano not far behind. Some tracks feature just a rhythm section while others have a full big band; unfortunately, at times the big band overwhelms Torme's vocals. Some old Mulligan standards (JERU, WALKIN' SHOES, LINE FOR LYONS) are included with lyrics apparently written for the occasion (at least I've never heard these songs with lyrics before), and the results are good. Perhaps the best track is the swinging LADY BE GOOD, with good solos by Mulligan and Shearing and a nice scat solo by Torme. WAVE has a good Shearing solo and the lengthy, multi-tempi BLUES IN THE NIGHT has excellent Mulligan. The worst vocal tracks are those where Mulligan and/or Shearing join Torme, though Torme alone is his usual master interpreter of this kind of material. It took a while to get this unissued concert released on CD, but it was worth the wait. Nice!
That Irreplaceable Mel.......2006-06-25
As we all know, nobody is indispensable. And very, very few of us are irreplaceable. But after listening to this great c.d. several times, I am reminded that Mel Torme is one of those very, very few. There wasn't a male jazz singer like him when he was alive and kicking; and there hasn't been one like him since he passed on 10 years ago.
I mention this to some, and the response is, "Was Torme actually a jazz singer?"
Hah! Are you kidding? Listen to his version of "Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today", which weaves in Basie's "Everyday I Have the Blues." Or listen to how he sings the three Gerry Mulligan compositions from the "Birth of the Cool" era, "Jeru", "Walkin' Shoes", and "Line for Lyons", and ask again if you haven't figured it out!
Listening to this also reminds me of this major truth: As Bobby Short was to Cole Porter, Mel Torme was to George and Ira Gershwin. Probably Torme's magnum opus was the 17-minute Gershwin medley on "Live at the Maisonette"; but listen to how he slips some Gershwin into the Jobim medley, "Wave/Agua de Beber." Or listen to how the "terrible trio" (as they were self-dubbed) do Johnny Mercer's "Blues in the Night", like a tune from "An American in Paris." And listen to how these three jazz giants do the encore, "Lady Be Good." This is a knock-off of Count Basie's immortal version of this Gershwin chestnut, with Mulligan riffing on Lester Young and Mel doing homage to Teddy Wilson. But then, Torme slips in a quote to another swing classic, Benny Goodman's "It's Good Enough to Keep." Not a jazzman? Giddoudahere!
As I reflect back on this album and all that Torme did over his marvelous career, I think of the lyric "Embrace me, you irreplaceable you." Another Gershwin, as you know. It fits. RC
"Great old melodies" performed in startling, new ways........2006-06-10
This recently discovered 1982 recording of the Carnegie Hall performance of Mel Torme, George Shearing, and Gerry Mulligan is the only known recording of these three giants performing together, and what a performance it is! Mulligan's fifteen-piece orchestra connects the artists' solos and fills the recording with atmospheric effects, haunting beats, and dramatic accents. Torme's evolution from crooner of beautiful melodies, as he was in the 1977 "London Sessions," to a full-out jazz performer just five years later, is obvious through his relaxed scatting and his use of his voice as a jazz instrument--on a par with Mulligan's sax and Shearing's piano.
Containing all the patter of a live performance, the CD gets off to a rousing start with Count Basie's "I Sent For You Yesterday and Here You Come Today," a lively swing song in which the performers are obviously having fun--an all-scat track in which the trio echoes and plays off each other, improvising as they go. Mulligan's composition, "Jeru" features Torme and Mulligan singing together in a song that is almost without a recognizable melodic line, filled with what Torme calls "crazy bridges." A Duke Ellington medley allows each man to solo, but they move back and forth, picking up each other's motifs and ending up back where they began. Thelonius Monk's bluesy "Round Midnight," sung as a haunting ballad, contains two long solos by Mulligan and Shearing, along with much improvisation and many key changes.
One of the most interesting tracks is "Line for Lyons," in which Torme, Mulligan, and Shearing, aided by Don Thompson on bass, recreate the "Mulligan Quartet" of earlier years, with Torme representing the clarinet through his scatting, and the soloists sometimes performing in different tempos simultaneously. The eleven-minute long "Blues in the Night" serves as the grand finale, a wildly imaginative treatment of the Harold Arlen/Johnny Mercer standard in which the performers are so in tune with each other that they soar into new realms.
Despite the fact that they are playing in Carnegie Hall, the three stars create the feeling of playing in an intimate jazz club--experimenting with songs full of dissonances, changes of rhythm, soaring improvisation, and non-stop scat. The orchestra, generally sensitive to the solos of the stars, somewhat overpowers Shearing, on occasion, and greater amplification of the piano would have helped. This recording of three jazz greats, having fun at a time when all three were making changes in their styles, is a landmark recording, one for which some small problems with mixing can be excused. n Mary
