These two Trios were published together as Beethoven's Op. 70. The first is better known, probably because of its nickname ("Ghost," after the spooky quality of its slow movement), but both are splendid examples of middle-period Beethoven chamber music. The Stuttgart Piano Trio's performances are among the best currently available at any price, and the participation of producer Teije van Geest insures excellent recorded sound. It is a little difficult to procure a copy of the opus 70/2 without buying a complete set of Beethoiven's works for piano trio ensemble, and these complete sets often include a lot of lightweight filler material (mostly variations) that you won't really listen to all that much. Therefore, I was glad to see that Naxos coupled the 70/2 with the much better-known and more widely available "Ghost" trio, which is usually paired with the awesome "Archduke" trio. The "Ghost" is well known and rightly so. It is typical of the trubulent dimension of Beethoven's middle period and has a gloriously melancholy and foreboding slow movement. The 70/2 is a more spacious and meditative piece (not in the same league as the "Archduke" but excellent nevertheless), although it does have its fiery moments. For this reason, I think it is right that the two should be packaged together, since they perfectly encapsulate and illustrate the duality in Beethoven's compositions during his middle period. The Opus 70/2 is to the "Ghost" what the fourth piano concerto, the "Pastoral" symphony and the violin concerto are to the fifth symphony, the "Appassionata" and the "Emperor" piano concerto.

The playing is outstanding. The Stuttgart Piano Trio have some excellent recordings of Beethoven and Schubert under their belt (I've reviewed and highly recommended them elsewhere), and any purchase of their recordings is a safe bet re. quality of sound and depth of interpretation. They have played together a long time and it shows. For sheer, unsurpassable je ne sais quoi magic, I don't think anyone can beat the Kempff/Fournier/Szerbing(sp.?) set for its utterly transcendent rendering of the "Ghost" trio's slow movement, but that set is harder to find and more expensive. Also, there are the merits of Naxos's having the two opus 70 trios together, which I have already discussed. I see Naxos recordings have become a little more expensive on Amazon of late, but they're still the best bargain in the classical music industry. If you're a chamber music fan, and/or a Beethoven fan who wants to complement the essentials with some of those slightly lesser-known but by no means slight works, then this recording, and indeed the entire Stuttgart set of Beethoven's piano trios, is for you.

Beethoven chose to introduce himself to the music world with his first three Trios, which he published as his Op. 1, despite Haydn's advice that some of the music was too radical for the public to accept. These works are in no way immature. They show the young composer fully formed, perhaps not the profound creator of the late Quartets but already writing great music. This CD is wonderful.

Early Beethoven is full of neglected masterpieces and Opus 1 is no exception. I love all of these early piano trios. The finale of No. 1 in particular is wonderful in its energy and vitality.

Although I have several recordings of these trios, this is probably the best. The Stuttgart Trio performs wonderfully, and the recording quality is first class.

Definitely a Desert Island CD which I always love coming back to.

EARLY BEETHOVEN MAGIC!.......2004-11-02

This is the disc to get, if you want the very first published works (Op. 1 no, 1-2) of Beethoven. I've heard many different versions, and I always come back to this performance by the Stuttgart Piano Trio on NAXOS. There is something exquisite about the way this trio plays these early works. Perfectly recorded and engineered, with just the right amount of reverb, without drenching the performance. It's one of the rare discs where you can sit back and just...relish in the power of classical chamber music.

Profound Early Beethoven.......2001-06-08

With the exception of the "Pathetique" sonata, Beethoven's very early work is often ignored, which is a great shame. Not only are his Opus 2 set of piano sonatas beautfully accomplished pieces that unmistakably establish Beethoven's unique voice, but these piano trios show complete mastery of a form that Mozart and Haydn had both successfully mined by the time Beethoven arrived in Vienna. Although these were Beethoven's first published pieces, it is easy to see how confident he already was in his powers, and in his belief that he could expand the boundaries of the classical forms he inherited.

There are three Opus 1 trios in all, and the first two are included here. Of the three, the third in C minor (the same key as the revolutionary Pathetique sonata and the fifth symphony) is the one that signals Beethoven's readiness to move beyond the parameters established by his predecessors. Nevertheless, the two on this recording are marvellous in and of themselves, and show a willingness on Beethoven's part to fully engage each instrument (Mozart's piano trios really under-utilize the cello) in wide-ranging and dramatic dialogue. Both pieces are serene and expansive, and the slow movements of both are especially pleasing. These pieces aren't in the same league as the middle period "Ghost" Trio or the late period masterpiece, the "Archduke." However, in looking for a late-18th century comparison, which is when the Opus 1's were written, I see them as the equal of Mozart's piano quartets, which means they're a must have.

As for the performances, I have long ceased to have any reservations about the chamber ensembles that perform for Naxos. You won't have any either once you hear this recording. The Stuttgart Piano Trio (who have also recorded the wonderful Schubert Trios for Naxos, which I have reviewed elsewhere) have been playing together for years, which is reflected in the easy give and take you can't help noticing, with no single player hogging the limelight. Buy this CD, and throw in the Opus 1, no. 3 for good measure. You'll be surprised that Beethoven was so good, so early.

Delectable Beethoven.......2003-03-07

Maybe these performers don't elicit the last ounce of pathos from the trios as some ensembles, but that was never their intent. These are simply the best performances of the trios available. Other groups (e.g. Stern/Istomin/Rose) may outshine Kempff, et al. here or there, but no other ensemble conveys the joy of the early works and the sublime beauty of the later works with such light-heartedness and dignity as Kempff, Fournier, and Szeryng. In short, this is joyous music-making. Buy this set!

This disc (Vol. 2) has the least great music in the Stuttgart Piano Trio's comprehensive series of Beethoven's Piano Trios. The Trio No. 3 is the last of the great Op. 1 set, which was Beethoven's first publication as a mature musician. The other works are all early and rather trivial--including Op. 44, one of a series of early pieces that Beethoven's brother sold to a publisher after the composer had become famous. Still, with performances and recording of this quality offered at such a ridiculously low price, you can afford to indulge in the disc even if you only listen to half of it.
