Album Description
Born in Buenos Aires in 1916, Alberto Ginastera lived to become unquestionably the most significant figure in Argentine music in the 20th Century. This CD combines Ginasteras deep interest in the authentic folk music of his country alongside the more radical compositional techniques which gave his music such individual personality. Commissioned in 1941 for Lincoln Kirsteins Ballet Caravan, the 1943 Suite made from Estancia became the piece that launched Ginasteras international famethe spectacular Danza Final is perhaps Ginasteras most celebrated essay in the style of the Malamboan exhilarating explosion of kinetic energy. Also in 1943, Ginastera composed his Overture to the Creole Faust, and it is, in a way an appendix to the Estancia dances, since it again deals with the life of the gauchos. Ollantay is nearly a symphony. Composed in 1947 for Erich Kleiber, the three movement work takes its inspiration from a poem from the early Incan period. Pampeana No. 3 is even closer to the symphony that Ginastera never wrote. Pampeana No.3 , like Ollantay, is also in three movements. The title recalls rhythms and melodies of the Argentine pampas, and the second movement contains one of the most extraordinary rhythmic tours-de-force in all of Ginasteras output. The Odense Symphony Orchestra continues their new series on Bridge with this outstanding recording. Bridge discs which also feature the Odense Symphony Orchestra include: BRIDGE 9129 (Villa-Lobos Symphonic Music), BRIDGE 9122 (Poul Ruders Edition, Vol. 3) and BRIDGE 9100 (Nielsen Violin Concerto).

Gabriela Montero CDs.......2007-06-12
Excellent service -- speedy, just as described, well-packaged. I'd definitely buy from this seller again.
Non-professional Review.......2007-03-27
Okay, I listen almost exclusively to classical music, but I do so simply for the pleasure and nothing more. I cannot tell you about Gabriela Montero's technique, and, when she improvises, I have no ability to judge the music's intrinsic value, authenticity, or whatever. I can only tell you this: while I own many dozens of albums, running the full spectrum of the classical genre, I value none of them above Montero's Bach and Beyond and her Piano Recital. Pure listening joy!
Absolutely Magnificent!.......2007-03-09
I first saw Gabriela Montero on 60 Minutes a few months ago and was taken by her playing ability as well as her ability to improvise on the classics. Ms. Montero's fingers fly over the keyboard, playing Rachmaninoff more dramatically and key-perfect than I've heard in a long time. I decided to purchase this CD and have not been disappointed.
Improvisations Unbelievable!.......2007-01-26
Gabriela Montero is a tremendous talent, both in standard classical repertoire, and improvisation. I have know her since she was a young girl, and she was by far the best pianist around, even then. She is an undersung pianist of our age, and should rise to the top very soon!
A beautiful breath of fresh air!.......2007-01-20
What a sheer delight hearing her play. I've never heard anyone quite like her. A phenomenally gifted player, and it's a rare treat to hear someone who defies pigeonholing. I had heard her on the radio, and knew I was onto something when her improvisation on a very simple theme gave me the chills. I love both CD's in this collection.
It's interesting hearing the negative response coming from some classical musicians and fans. At times it can seem to roughly follow the stages of grief as proposed by Kubler-Ross. I'm a professional guitarist, and it's funny because it's almost identical to how guitarists react to hearing another guitarist, but with an big class-conscious overlay (all very civilized, of course). Think of the "guitarist screwing in a lightbulb" joke. To paraphrase and extrapolate on what someone might say upon hearing her improvisation:
1. Shock: Wow, he's good. Oh, and it's a woman!? And you say it's improvisation??
2. Denial: That can't possibly be improvisation. Classical musicians don't engage in that untidy process. What she's playing must be written out, and I can tell! Don't ask, I just know it.
3. Anger: This stuff is no good. Only permanent music is of value through the ages, and that's why classical music (and only the European kind) is better than any other music. Besides, I can't improvise, so I reject it - and only THOSE people engage in improvisation.
4. Depression: She can play all the classical music, and seemingly can improvise, or at least pass her stuff off as such. Not only that, she's getting attention and money, and we're not. Why is the world unfair?
5. Acceptance: (sort of) Well, I guess she's selling CD's, and is becoming successful. She is, I hate to admit it, a great player. Even if she is a faker. Of course, they're begging my Muffy to become artist-in-residence in Spoleto....
The other reviewer has a point when he says that she may be viewed as a curiosity. Because she's crossing genres, people may not know what to make of it, and this often causes reflexive hostility. As an improvisor, I would agree that it's hard to say that something is 100% improvised - players tend to have pet phrases and favorite general ideas they return to. But to me, Gabriela's playing is at the highest level of skill, beauty, and feeling, whether improvising or playing written pieces.

This piano-playing team of five siblings could be easily dismissed as just another crossover ploy, but that would be a mistake. My initial surprise turned into an hour of pleasant listening and, on rehearings, to admiration for this unique ensemble of talented young artists. For one thing, they've got the chops to bring off some fiendishly difficult works. Listen to the way sisters Desirae and Deondra tackle modernist Witold Lutoslawski's Variations on a Theme of Paganini, or brother Ryan's colorful romp through Ginastera's tricky dance rhythms. The fivesome also achieve carefully balances in their concerted works, with a scrupulously turned version of Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and their arrangement of highlights from Stravinsky's Firebird. Those in doubt should hear tracks two through four, for irresistible versions of Lecouna's popular Malaguena, a fetching combination of Dvorak and Copland, and a piano rag by John Novacek. A delightful, spirited disc that never fails to please. --Dan Davis

If Music Could Spin the World..........2006-12-05
...this CD would have our planet twirling voraciously. The Browns are back, and they're as stunning as ever. The brilliant fivesome (Desirae, Deondra, Gregory, Melody, and Ryan) simply shine in this recording. Their first recording was absoulutely breathtaking, but you could sense a cautious sort of "nervousness." The 5 Browns have overcome all caution, nervous or naught, and whiz confidently through dazzling solos, duets, and, of course, quintets. The highlights of this CD for me personally were 1) The 5 piano Rhapsody in Blue 2) Malaguena, performed by the lovely Brown brothers 3) Last but DEFINATELY not least, the 5 piano interpretation of Stravinsky's Firebird. Oh, I cannot convey to you the power and incandescent beauty of 'The Firebird,' especially on 5 pianos! 'The Firebird' alone makes this CD a winner. Other than that, frankly, I didn't get all excited about the other tracks. The Argentinian Dances are quite masterfully performed by Ryan, and I very much enjoyed Desirae and Deondra's (the inseparable duoists) 'Variations on a Theme of Paganini." This is not to be confused with the immensely popular 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini'(composed by the incomparable Rachmaninoff.) All in all, if you enjoy a twist (but a respectful twist) on the world's greatest music, you will enjoy the power that's contained in this little Dual Discer.
(As a closing note, the video side of the disc is very entertaining, including music videos of Rhap in Blue, Simple Gifts, and The Firebird. Of course they cut the clips a bit, and I won't say it isn't noticeable, but boy is it cool to see the 5 in action!)
An enjoyable CD.......2006-08-05
I would have to say that I was absolutely amazed with this CD. I'm usually not the type of person who would listen to classical music, but I thoroughly loved it. I love playing it in the car on the way to class; it gets me relaxed. Buy 'No Boundaries'!! You will not regret it!
no sophomore slump here.......2006-08-04
I had always been a little bored by music for 2 or more pianos, but this disc changed my mind -- very exciting!
I recently had the pleasure of meeting The 5 Browns - what a nice bunch. They are all very talented, but the sum is even better than the parts -- what playing & what great enthusiasm. They obviously have fun making music together and they have the chops to make it exciting for the listener. Especially fun are Rhapsody in Blue and the excerpts from the Firebird. The DVD video bits are a nice bonus.
I'm waiting impatiently for their next disc.
Different and inspiring!.......2006-06-22
Well, I must say that I enjoyed this second CD better than the first one. There was more variety and I loved the arrangements for 5 pianos! As a teen classical pianist, it is cool to see someone finally making classical music fun and interesting. They have re-inspired me and my love for classical music!
Dual Disc.......2006-06-21
I really enjoyed the DualDisc version. Being able to see the 5 Browns playing adds so much. This is a wonderful disk. A great gift to introduce younger and older audiences to classical music!

Explosive sounds from Argentina.......2006-12-15
Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983) ranks with Carlos Chavez, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Silvestre Revueltas as one of the best known (and most revered) Latin American composers. A native of Argentina, Ginastera was a "nationalist" composer who made use of his country's folk music and rhythms in many his works.
This newest addition to Naxos's LATIN AMERICAN CLASSICS series highlights two of Ginastera's earliest works, the ballets PANAMBI and ESTANCIA.
PANAMBI, Ginestera's opus 1 which was written in 1937, is based on the supernatural tales of the Guarani Indians from northern Argentina.
Brimming with suspenseful, dreamlike melodies and contrasting hard-hitting rhythms and audacious percussion, PANAMBI, something of a pagan pageant, can be easily considered the Argentinean version of THE RITE OF SPRING. In fact, I have never heard a "Stravinsky-influenced" piece sound more like Stravinsky than this. Indeed, this is not negative; Ginastera's intrinsic originality and Latin sentiment shine throughout PANAMBI even though Stravinsky's presence ever looms in the background.
More original (but no less exciting) is Ginastera's music from the ballet ESTANCIA written in 1941. Set on the vast, lonely Argentinean plains (the pampas), ESTANCIA a nostalgic glorification of the gaucho (cowboy) and of his difficult yet vigorous life.
The music of ESTANCIA is laden with Argentinean folk melodies and aesthetics, and even includes a part for bass-baritone. Like PANAMBI, there are slow, gloomy sections that seem to evoke the sprawling vastness of the pampas, but there are also moments of scintillating, percussive energy suggesting the work and play of the gauchos.
Unlike many of works from Ginastera's later period, PANAMBI and ESTANCIA avoid the severe atonality and aloofness of, for example, his two PIANO CONCERTOS (also available on Naxos).
While both pieces from the present disc can certainly be classified as "modernist," they retain a welcome accessibility that won't be a turn-off to people who usually eschew such music. Any fan of early Stravinsky or Prokofiev would relish these recordings.
And what recordings they are! Both ballets are impeccably recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra under the dynamic baton of the Uruguayan conductor Gisele Ben-Dor. Additionally, the bass-baritone Luis Gaeta is perfect in his turn as the narrator/soloist in ESTANCIA. His richly authoritative "Latin" tone adds authenticity and class to an already classy disc.
Another winning point for this recording is that the complete music from both ballets is presented; these are not just excerpts. (In fact, this CD features a world-premiere recording of the complete ESTANCIA music!)
All in all, this Naxos album is easily recommended.

SLAUGHTER ON TENTH AVE- Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops.......2007-03-14
On this album, recorded in 1958, Fiedler is at its best. "Slaughter on Tenth Ave" is a great musical score and a famous black and white, gangster film was made of it back in 1951 and released in 1952, starring Richard Egan.
This album is another reason why the Boston Pops is my favorite classical orchestra and the late maestro Arthur Fiedler was a true master of his profession. His work will never be forgotten. Having lived in Boston for nearly 17 years, made the Boston Pops my favorite of the genre.
I highly recommend this album.

It's a starry, moonlit night in 50's Manhattan...........2003-02-16
...And this album is the perfect soundtrack to it. In this compilation are the creme de la creme of modern nocturnal classical pieces, with the exception of Khatchaturian's Sabre Dance. Here is the anthem of Manhattan itself, "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue" by Richard Rodgers, "Gavotte and Blues" by Morton Gould, "Fancy Free: Gallop, Danzon and Waltz" by Bernstein, "The Three Cornered Hat" By De Falla and the "Age of Gold Polka" by Shostakovich, a piece to help bring up images of an old string-marionette puppet show. However, for some odd reason, "Petrouschka" by Igor Stravinsky and one of the most beautiful melodies you'll ever hear, Gian-Carlo Menotti's "Barcarolle from 'Sebastian'" have been left off of this version of the album, to be replaced by the woefully out-of-place, (and totally mediocre,) "Estancia: Malambo" by somebody named Ginastera. This is a bloody shame, for the left out pieces really enhanced the feel of the whole album! Still, though, what is left will mentally put you in a cherry paneled den with subdued ligting, in a big red leather easy chair, puffing on the most aromatic pipe you own, (if you smoke,) reading your favorite Raymond Chandler novel. I can't recommend it highly enough! (The album, not smoking!)
By all means, beware of later incarnations of this album which were altered beyond all recongition, with only "Rodeo" and "Fancy Free" left on it, along with the title tune. It is NOT the same album! Somebody at BMG had the good sense to find THIS incarnation in RCA's catalog, which isn't TOO mangled, to represent Fiedler and the Pops at their finest, and market it in lieu of the latter mistake! The original, "Orthophonic" version, which included "Sebastian" and "Petrouschka", is, apparently, either still buried in RCA's vaults, or, regrettably, no more....
I often picture Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse traipsing down 1st Ave. to the best music on this album. The "Fancy Free" pieces would have made GREAT title themes for Tim Burton's "Batman " movies. (Okay, Warner's...remember me when you use that idea!)
If you lived through the fifties either as an adult or a child, or if you want to know what nighttime felt like in a good urban neighborhood between 1930 and 1960, GET THIS ALBUM!!
THIS IS BAD.......2002-03-18
I THOUGHT THIS CD WAS VERY BAD. I REALLY DIDN'T LIKE IT AND I DON'T THINK ANYONE WILL. IT IS OLD FASHIONED AND NOT A GOOD CD FOR PEOPLE TO LISTEN TO NOWADAYS.
Unique collection of Dances.......2000-03-27
I first purchased this music in vinyl record form in 1960. At the time, I was looking for a hi-fi version of Slaughter On Tenth Avenue and this recording was the only one available in town.
The title music was all I wanted it to be and it was pure serendipity to also receive the rest of the selections on the record. Some I was familiar with, but the rest have since become some of my favorite music. The fact that I am back getting a CD of the music helps attest to its timeless value. After almost exactly 40 years I am still not tired of it and am looking forward to being able to hear it again in about the clearest form possible. Now I will be able to listen to it in my car as well as at home.
Maybe it will help to know that I think Slaughter On Tenth Avenue is the best piece of American music ever composed.
My tastes run toward music with strong melody lines (such as Greig's music) and all of the selections in this disc meet that criterium.

Argerich at her most brilliant and mercurial.......2007-01-15
The long review below gives all the details of this CD, which combines a live Schumann concerto from 2002 and part of a recital from The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam in 1978. Argerich fans will already own both, and newcomers will be entranced. I have not always been a great admirer--Argerich is capable of willful playing and erratic interpretations. But the Schumann, delivered with utmost improvisation, ranks as one of a kind. It far outstrips her clangorous reading under Harnoncourt on Teldec. Be prepared for a less than world class Italian orchestra; the first entry of the feeble oboe and wobbly horn is a shock. But Argerich is the whole show. Among the Amsterdam pieces her Ravel Gaspard de la Nuit is the most astonishing.
Splendid Compilation from Argerich's Best EMI Recordings.......2006-06-12
Among the latest releases in EMI's "Great Artists of the Century" series, this CD is an excellent overview of acclaimed Argentine pianist Martha Argerich's career as a soloist pianist recorded by EMI, from both now and the 1970s, compiled from two recently issued recordings. She has recorded Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor at least three times in the past twenty years; once each for Teldec (now Warner Classics), Deutsche Grammophon, and EMI. Her latest recording is from a live concert in Lugano, Italy in 2002, backed by the Orchestra della Svizerra italiana under the baton of Alexandre Rabinovitch-Barakovsky. Hers is a fiery, emotionally intense performance, underscoring her still formidable technique, and sounding vividly fresh, with ample dramatic range. In the liner notes critic Bryce Morrison observes how she tries to tackle each performance of this veritable piano concerto classic as if it was entirely new and unpredictable; this is most certainly the case in this riveting live performance.
As much as I admire her latest recording of the Schumann piano concerto, the true gems on this CD are her intense, brilliant performances of Schumann's Fantastucke and Ravel's Gaspard de la nuit from a 1978 live recording of a solo recital at Amsterdam's legendary Het Concertgebouw. Both works are a splendid demonstration of her emotionally intense, technically brilliant playing, with the Schumann illustrating a more gentle, lyrical side, and the Ravel underscoring her fiery playing, as if she was possessed by a demon. More of her dramatic intensity at the keyboard can be heard in her encore performance of Ginastera's three brief Danzas argentinas; her musical tribute to the late great Argentine composer. EMI must be commended for issuing this splendid compilation of some of Argerich's best recordings for its label.
The most stunning pianist of the century.......2005-12-03
Martha Argerich is no stranger to contraversy. Her performances throughout the last half century have been so flamboyant and her excitement unparalleled, but her interpretations are the main focus of the contraversy, because she often seems to draw more attention to herself than to the pieces themselves and their musical qualities. However, no performer that I have ever heard has put so much life into the pieces as she - excitement and passion flow freely from her fingers. The Schumann concerto is very beautiful (although not one of my favorite concertos), and tastefully played (I only have one other recording of this concerto, and really disliked the other one, so I don't have much to compare it to). Schumann's Fantasiestucke is a very beautiful set, and thoughtfully composed. I don't like the anticlimactic ending of the set, but there are some notable highlights, particularly "Aufschwung", "In Der Nacht" and "Fabel". I also really enjoy "Traumes Wirren", a technical powerhouse that Argerich tackles with an amazing blend of ease and excitement. The real highlight of this CD is Ravel's masterpiece "Gaspard de la Nuit". "Ondine" is amazingly beautiful - Argerich executes the runs and tremelos with amazing ease and velocity and doesn't take away from the musical qualities of the piece - she vividly portrays the musical colors Ravel had in mind (this is probably my favorite impressionistic piece, besides possibly Ravel's "Jeux D'Eau"). The middle movement is morbid in its imagery of a corpse hanging and the unrelenting B-flat that is quite effective. "Scarbo" is known to be one of the most difficult pieces ever composed for piano solo, Ravel himself claimed to be trying to make it more difficult than Balakirev's "Islamey." Argerich plays this piece with such passion and technical control that I will forever envy everyone who was able to attend this live performance. Ginastera's dances are a great addition to the rest of the CD - almost a full 80 minutes for a price less than most classical CDs. Although all of these performances are live, the sound quality is excellent (although there is some annoying caughing from the audience throughout much of "Gaspard" - this still doesn't take away from enjoying the recording, though). Definitely a good deal that you will not regret buying.

My all time favorite CD.......2004-01-11
Perfect. The best performance of the best music.
Beautiful!!.......2001-11-10
This album is an absolute joy to experience! The recording proves to all who may doubt, that brass quintet is a medium capable of musical miracles! The pieces here are taken from the orchestral repetoire and have been arranged for five brass voices. Trumpeter Rolf Smedvig and his ensemble perform in a manner that is always immaculate, tasteful and above all, musical. The precision of the enemble playing here is in a word, astonishing. On track #1, 'Procession of the Nobles', for example, there is a moment where the 2nd trumpet begins an ascending line that is overtaken and completed by the 1st trumpet. The transition is so liquid and seemless that the casual listener will not even be aware that the line wasn't played by one person! Tubist Samuel Pilafian offers a lovely arrangement of Copland's 'Simple Gifts' that shows off a wide range of sound from soft and sweet to bold and grand. Another favorite is the joyous 'Slavonic Dance No. 8' with its rollicking, sunny feel and inspiring dynamic contrast. Brass enthusiasts, purchase this recording with confidence! It is amazing!

Off the waterfront........2002-01-28
Argentina's Alberto Ginastera's music for the 1936 ballet "Panambi" is the main reason to buy this CD, along with Heitor Villa-Lobos' wonderful "The Little Train of the Caipira," kind of the termperamental counterpart to Arthur Honegger's "Pacific 231." Both pieces were recorded circa 1958 and, in this reissue, they reveal near-digital sound quality. These do not, in any way, sound like 44-year-old recordings.
Alberto Ginastera's masterful "Panambi," the notes reveal, concerns a South American Indian legend, and the music must have been one of the primary sources for all those "Exotic Voodoo Island Rapture" type of instrumental albums in the 1950s (for which Les Baxter gets most of the blame, though he was hardly alone). And two of movements sound amazingly like Leonard Bernstein's noisy, syncopated, and brassy score for "On the Waterfront," which arrived many years later and which contained none of Ginastera's subtlety, rhythmic or otherwise. Listen to "Invocation of the Powerful Spirits" and, especially, "Lament of the Maidens and Rondo of the Maidens" and try not to think of Bernstein's famous score. While there are no direct borrowings, as near as my ear can tell, the mood and spirit are remarkably similar, though such music makes a great deal more sense in a South American Indian context than that of Marlon Brando on the docks. It's nice, certainly, to be reminded that loud percussion can be artful and MUSICAL, a lesson the makers of car ads could stand to learn sometime.
No mass-market "exotica" here. Just fabulous music. Sir Eugene Goossens and the London Symphony Orchestra are superb. Get this one.
great recording.......2001-04-23
John Antill, (1904-1986) the Australian born composer, is the main reason to pick up this interesting mid-priced cd from the Everest label. His most well known work, the balled-score for "Corroboree," graces this recording done by the LSO under Sir Eugene Goossens.
The piece is based on a dance ceremony done by one of Australia's aboriginal communities, and allows for wonderful interpretations of its primitivism. The LSO does a credible job, coaxing the listener into Antill's web with a colorfully scored reading of his work. As a culrural anthropologist, I can almost see and feel the action around me, with was likely one of Antill's goals.
"Dance to the Evening Star" is a wonderful opening movement, enticing the listener to become part of the ceremony; "Rain Dance," complete with a strong sense of rhythm, draws you closer to the action that is to occur; "Procession of the Totems" invokes a sense of mystery and Antill's gradual building up of suspense- like a good novel, the climax is slow in building; "Closing Fire Ceremony" explodes with frantic energy, as any good fire ceremony would- a fitting climax to the piece.
The LSO's performance fits the bill nicely, filled with the energy needed to both build and release the suspense created by Antill. The recording quality of the performance is decent, as well, though a tad over-resonant at moments. Still, the overall performance is well worth the mid-range price of the cd.
While the performances of Villa-Lobos and Ginestera are both excellent, it is the Antill piece that will likely grab and keep your attention longer. It is a wonderful collection overall and well worth searching out.

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz
Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03
Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.
beautiful mexican music.......1999-04-03
