Customer Reviews:
My experience of this CD.......2007-04-04
My hats off to this CD collection! It was worth it!!! Chopin is a true genius for the piano, on this collection.
Beautiful!.......2006-08-18
This is a beautifully played collection of Chopin's work. It was a birthday gift,
and I listen to bits of it every day. I have yet to find a favorite
CD, as each is so lovely. It is well worth the price.
Well worth the money. Wonderful! Wonderful!.......2006-06-10
I am not a classical music expert but I am an expert when it comes to a great product. I have listened to the works of rubenstein and Horowitz, but nothing is comparable to this great collection of polands favorite son. The nocturnes are dreamy and romantic. The other pieces though not as mesmerizing have plenty of depth and feeling. This is a collection that you will listen to over and over again. Although this music is great anytime, it's especially meaningful during a light rainfall. Go ahead and make this investment. It's only $100.00. For the next 100 days save a dollar and you will have it paid for. I promise you won't be sorry. Excellent! Excellent!
Best investment to make.......2006-05-21
In my opinion, this is the apex of classical music. You will not find a better CD for Chopin or any piano recordings. There may be plenty of comparable CDs, but nothing can claim to surpass this.
Although some pieces are not as good as those by other artists, Ashkenazy's interpretations of Chopin are the best I've ever heard. Add in his amazing technical performance and you've got some sublime music.
Listening to these pieces have immensely helped my own Chopin reportoire. I don't play to mimic Ashkenazy, but I use his insights and apply my own style over that and end up with something exponentially better than what I could produce on my own.
The price is something you have to seriously consider. A hundred bucks. Yeah, that's a lot of money, but that's 48 cents per song. And you'll listen to these songs dozens of times, at least, I guarantee. Plus it's a great deal... if you were to get all the Ashkenazy-Chopin CDs available on Amazon, overlapping pieces as little as possible, you'd pay $30 more and still not have everything.
This is an investment for life and will definitely remain one of my favorite CD sets for decades. Decades. A hundred bucks for decades of amazing music. This stuff is larger than today, larger than life.. music this good is something you can't afford to pass up because of temporary financial difficulties.
A great pianist interpreting the most inspired composer ever !.......2005-09-15
Lets imagine that Chopin himself has recorded his own compositions in a perfectly clear CD. I am sure that some classical music reviewers would say "This is not the way Chopin is meant to be played". These classical music "pundits" are very intolerant.
Interpretation and emotion feeling is also a matter of taste, so that the only one who can give a final answer is Franois (Frederic).
Ashkenazy is gifted with a phenomenal technique, a great pianist. So that this collection is for sure 5 stars. Enjoy it.
Ah, if you like to see piano technique in action, listen to Georgy Cziffra's interpretation of Etude op. 10 no. 4. (Search the album in my reviews.)

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14
Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Sàndor, still active at 90 as this reissue appears, was a student of Bartók and a preferred interpreter of his music. Since this set appeared on nine LPs in the early 1960s, it has been the standard for Bartók's piano music; in this fine-sounding reissue, it still is. Sàndor can hit hard enough for such virtuoso pieces as the Piano Sonata and "Out of Doors," but he also retains the romantic element heard in the composer's own playing which tempers the harsher qualities of the music. While this collection isn't quite as complete as advertised (some early, insignificant piano music by Bartók is omitted), it includes all of Bartók's significant piano music, including such relatively obscure gems as the Bagatelles, eight Improvisations, and many delectable folk arrangements which will appeal even to listeners who think Bartók is too challenging for them. Vox's recorded sound, superbly remastered, resists obsolescence as effectively as Sàndor's performances. Even with the inclusion of the early books of "Mikrokosmos," which will appeal mostly to piano students, this set is worth several times the asking price. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Microcosmos.......2007-03-08
Sándor was a champion not only of Bartók's music but also of Bartók's style of playing. He often complained that people were too quick to see Bartók as ultra-modern, and to fail to appreciate the rich seam of lyricism that also runs through his music.
The piano music is dominated by short pieces, many of them written for piano students, notably the collections "Microcosmos" and "For Children". These, together with suites of folk dance arrangements, make up the bulk of the solo piano output.
Sandór plays these short, and often simple pieces, with neither too much nor too little art. As a gifted teacher, he knew unerringly how much music each of these small vessels held. The result is beguiling - but be warned: no-one can listen to the 153 short pieces of Microcosmos end-to-end. This is an anthology to be dipped into, not swallowed whole.
The remastering is pretty successful (fortunately - some of Vox's CD reissues are plagued by severe deterioration of the original tapes). And it's for half nothing-what's not to like?
Great value with a few flaws.......2006-07-28
I am not a Bartok expert by any scale, but I do like the way these pieces, without exception, are played. There are, however, a couple of other problems.
As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, very few of the works are split into tracks - Mikrokosmos is divided into 7 for each of its six volumes, and to accomodate for a full CD. In these seven tracks there are 121 songs. I would have much preferred if the songs had been split into tracks. Almost the entire CD set is this way - Fifteen Hungarian Songs is one track, Fourteen Bagatelles, etc. It is very annoying when one wants to hear a particular song in those tracks and not the others.
Another detriment to the collection is the recording quality. It is decent most of the time, but in loud sections the piano buzzes. One might be able to ignore it, but I think that it detracts from the passion of the forte quite a bit.
Overall, for $18 it is pretty decent, but if you are like me and like to keep your music library neatly organized (and aren't extremely cheap), I would not recommend this set.
eeh, I guess I don't like Bartok that much.......2006-07-25
I like the fact that Bartok is into the folk tradition and all, but he just tends to forget the fact that melody has to be SOMEWHERE in the music. I'm all for creative expression when you're sitting alone at the piano, but abstract music should be reserved for performance art. I like playing some of your stuff Bela, but I just don't want to listen to you.
Best classical value out there.......2005-10-05
To put this set in perspective, for months I would go to my local Tower Records fishing for worthwhile classical CDs at least once a week. One of the discs that sat in the bins the longest was a single CD of Bartok piano music, played by Zoltan Kocsis. It was Volume 7 of a complete series. This CD listed for $17.99, and as long as I went to that Tower Records, it did not budge an inch, nor was its price amended.
Now, Kocsis is one of the greatest pianists alive, and if anyone is worthy of commanding a premium, it is him. And to be fair, that CD is going to be re-released on October 11 as part of a Collector's Edition - eight CDs, $63.97 MSRP. But it's already going up against this little gem, which contains five CDs with all of the truly great solo-piano works by an internationally recognized Bartok specialist for $21 - not much more than the cost of one CD from the other set. This kind of value is not to be taken lightly.
I came to this set with my impression of Sandor informed by his complete Prokofiev - ultra-hard, sometimes rhythmically slack, always melodically lacking in some way or another. But he held a very special feeling for Bartok, and saved his best playing for the great Hungarian. In passages like the first of the Three Csik Dances, the opening of the Improvisations Op. 20, or in the Ten Easy Pieces, there is a simplicity, charm and wistful homesickness that is quite touching. In pieces like the Out of Doors suite, the Sonata, or the Burlesques, there is a vicious, impulsive energy, a wicked sense of humor and an overabundance of overtones. It is never mindless, inappropriate or even overly harsh - it's just very, very loud.
In this set I like best the endless landscape of the Sonatina, the unusual colors and fragrances in the Etudes, the brilliantly conceived Bear Dance (the last of the Ten Easy Pieces), and the multifaceted, complex, gorgeous Improvisations. Any fan of Bartok should hear these.
5 Stars for the music and performance.......2005-04-04
This is a fantastic deal, but the problem with this Collection stems from the fact that the pieces are often not separated by tracks. This is especially annoying for the Children's Pieces and Mikrokosmos. There are so many pieces, one wears out the fast forward button and still may miss the particular piece one is looking for. The booklet is fairly insightful, and the performer is widely hailed as the supreme interpreter of Bartok's piano music. So aside from this slightly annoying at times and ridiculously annoying at other times flaw, this is one of the best deals in Classical music. Don't hesitate. Add it to the cart.

Customer Reviews:
The idiosyncratic gaze! .......2006-08-17
Samson Francois' Chopin has overtly overtopped and even redefined the whole concept around Chopin's universe.
As a matter of fact, Alfred Cortot, Dinu Lipatti, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli brought not only a refreshing vision but still better, new perspectives of interpretation, leaving behind the romanticism and approaching him under the idiosyncratic emblem of a bygone era. That's what the previous reviewers have denominated eccentric rather than interpretative renovation, where the dimension of every piece is considered in its own individuality and specific weight, where the concept of miniaturist composer has been substituted by the thinker poet, earning an organic quality and major dramatic scope.
I cannot think about another pianist who may phrase Chopin as Francois did it. So, please do me a favor and firmly decide to acquire it. You will surprise yourself!
Fascinating Chopin.......2006-02-17
I understand Francois was somewhat of an eccentric, and in a way his playing of these familiar great works are sometimes eccentric, for instance in the tempos of the first movement of the First Concerto and the first movement of the B-flat minor sonata. He is a great magician and poet, however, and these well-recorded readings have given me immense pleasure. Great for a more non-traditional look at Chopin, a composer that allows the performer a lot of leeway to engage in fluctuations of line and tempo without diminishing the works. The Noctures, Ballades, Concerti, Sonatas, Preludes, Polonaises and Etudes are wonderful. The Mazurkas seem pretty cold-hearted and are the low point of the set. However, the highs far outweigh the lows, and I highly recommend this modestly priced set as a very interesting alternative to more traditional approaches. A unique artist.
The One and Only One Chopinist?.......2005-01-25
Samson Francois is more well-known in Europe (or even in Asia) than in US.
Philips, advised by Alfred Brendel among others, presented Samson Francois as one of the greatest pianists of the century. In Philips' list, we do have some extraordinary Chopinists. Fridedman's Mazurkas are said to be unsurpassble, so are Cortot's Preludes & Etudes (or all his Chopin), or Lipatti's Waltzes. Or else, Hofmann's or Rachmaninov's Chopin are just marvelous. But those are historic recordings. While some prefer Moravec or even Arrau's Nocturnes, Rubinstein's Nocturnes, and particularly his Polonaises, like Agerich's Preludes are a sensation. Cziffra's Chopin is superb, so is Freire in general. But we can't leave out Samson as a leading Chopin interpreter.
Samson was perhaps the greatest of Cortot's pupils. From his Chopin Ballades, there are all-embracing colours (by the subtlety of using the pedal among other things) creating rainbow after rainbow. The harmonic suspensions as the nub of the Ballades adds so much to the potency of music. His Nocturnes, darkening the colours in the background creating the right atmostphere together with the poignancy of his narrative power, compare favourably with Arrau's. His Preludes may not be a fiery as Agerich's, but they are more bitter, so bitter that he is a type of his own...
The Nocturnes are recorded in '66. And in any event the earliest recording in the boxset was made in '54 and the re-mastering is so good that unless you make an effort, you won't be able to tell them from modern recordings and yet they are sold at bargain price. Grap it while it is still available.
Excellent, Eccentric Chopin.......2004-01-18
The Chopin "Piano Works" featured in this 10 CD set from EMI's "Budget Box Series" are excellent, yet eccentric. Those used to the romance and poetry of Rubinstein, the deliberateness and precision of Horowitz, or the power and grace of Pollini may well be in for a shock when it comes to Samson Francois' Chopin. The Piano Concertos, performed with Louis Fremaux conducting the Monte Carlo National Opera Orchestra from 1965 (and available as a single disc in EMI's "Great Recordings of the Century" series) are strikingly different from accounts I am more familiar with by Argerich, Bachauer and Gilels. To say their defining characteristic is that they are more French sounding is an understatement. The highlight of this set, which by the way is not a "complete" volume of all of Chopin's piano music, has to be the Ballades (though, like much of the material in this set they are in mono) and the Nocturnes (in stereo from 1966). In turn, the low point is most certainly the Mazurkas -- Artur, where are you when we need you? In all, this is certainly an amazing musical document, and at this budget price, a nice alternative to more accepted readings. But my five-star rating comes with the caveat that this Box Set is not for those looking for there one and only Chopin collection.

This set doesn't include all of Chopin's piano music because Artur Rubinstein didn't record all of it. (The Etudes are the most notable omission.) But it does include the last, and usually best, versions of all the Chopin he did record, along with three earlier versions. Other pianists have had other things to say about Chopin, and it's a mistake to think that any one performer can give you the complete picture of any music. But these performances, for the most part, are as good as we've come to think they are, so at mid-price this 11-disc set is a real bargain for Chopin lovers. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Rubinstein: Chopin's voice for the ages.......2004-11-19
As long as pianists perform Chopin, they will read the name of Artur Rubinstein in their reviews, because Rubinstein is the standard to which all others are compared. It doesn't matter if the performance is more pyrotechnic, as Horowitz's Polonaise in Ab (Op. 53) certainly was, or if they are supremely intelligent and perfectly rendered, as Pollini's Etudes and Preludes are, of if they are fresh and exciting as in Murray Perahia' more recent recordings; we can rate only them because Rubinstein set the standard by which all others are judged. And after listening to all those others, and loving them, I still go back to Rubinstein and feel as though I'm home again. He has a voice and an incredible "something" to communicate in each turn of phrase that is never ostentatious, never over-reaching, yet always deep, always pure and natural, always the sound of the old world, as if it had simply transported itself through time and was speaking in its native voice. Which... it was. Rubinstein was 12 years old at the turn of the century (1900), but he already was deeply rooted in old Europe's musical style. His long life enabled him to bring that world to life for several generations.
This is one of the most incredible boxed sets in the music world. It is the Rubinstein I grew up on, made new with digital remastering, mostly by Max Wilcox, who was also the original engineer on most of these discs. If you have not heard these recordings, you are in for a treat. If you have heard them before, then this set is going to sound familiar, but more clear and detailed than the old LPs and 45s of the originals.
This is essential Chopin, by one of the most incredible men who ever sat at a piano. I just can't recommend this enough.

WONDERFUL - A TREASURE!.......2002-07-04
Rubinstein has always been one of my favorite pianists. Some criticize him for technique or this or that, but I have heard dozens and dozens of concert pianists live and I heard him live only once. It was one of the great nights of my life. Of course, he didn't follow the program. He played what he felt like playing (he was nearly blind then). And the Chopin was utterly beautiful. His tone and phrasing and love of the music was a force that won over everyone in the audience.
This collection contains the Chopin recordings Rubinstein made over the years. It contains some pieces more than once because there were recordings in Rubinstein's early and late years. There is a difference in the playing (and the sound is better in the later recordings).
Purists complain about this or that. It is easy to attack giants. But Rubinstein has remained in the pantheon and I don't think anyone is going to knock him off the list of great pianists anytime soon. I hope this collection isn't going out of print. It is an important collection musically and historically.
An amazing collection.......2002-02-13
I recently purchased this box set, and even though I have many other different versions of Chopin's mazurkas, etudes, preludes, sonatas and noctures, I had very few waltzes, impromtus or polinaises before this purchase. So while the music isn't necessarily new to me, the interpretations are. There are a few different tempos than I am used to with some pieces, but the sound quality is excellent, with the exceptions of the preludes. They were recorded nearly 60 years ago so the background noise is something I'm not accustomed to, but this set is amazing. I will listen to it many times over, and treasure this set the rest of my life.
If you can get your hands on a copy, I would highly recommend doing so as soon as you can.
A Chopin Enthusiast's Treasure.......2000-05-23
Having grown up with the much older vinyl edition, this complete Rubinstein Chopin collection brings back to life the old vinyl record set with new clarity and adds additional music. With the same red RCA logo as the vinyl records, a sense of nostalgia is created. Rubinstein plays chopin like no other, and now on digital medium, Rubinstein's work will last for generations. The CD's add a much needed clarity to the original vinyl set. The stereo selections have better stereo separation and high fidelity than the vinyl records. This CD box set is the complete Rubinstein Chopin collection, the vinyl record set did not include such key recordings as the Mazurkas and others. From the novice listener to the experienced Chopin enthusiast, this Rubinstein collection is a monumental acheivement. In these recordings, Rubinstein brings forth his own unique mastery of Chopin. One cannot fully appreciate Chopin without listening to his playing. Rubinstein's subtle expressions, nuances, virtuosity, and bold declarations are consistent from recording to recording. This is a mandatory addition to any classical collection and required listening for anyone interested in Chopin.

The late Scott Ross recorded this monumental set as a series of weekly programs for French radio during 1985, the 300th anniversary of Scarlatti's birth. Learning and recording so much music weekly had some disadvantages, and not every one of these performances maintains the same high level. But most of them do; Ross gives us generally fine playing of this magnificent body of music, in its only complete recording ever. I never lost my interest while listening through the entire set. Erato offers 34 discs for the price of 20, as it should; the music could have easily fit onto 25 discs and saved us some shelf space. --Leslie Gerber

One of the monuments in the history or recording, the late Scott Ross recorded this epoch-making set of 555 keyboard sonatas as part of a series of recitals given on Radio France. The music is amazing. After starting out as a slightly run-of-the-mill Italian Baroque composer, the middle-aged Domenico left his father's baleful influence and became the teacher of Princess Maria Barbara of Portugal, later Queen of Spain. While in her service, he created this fantastic body of short pieces, each a little gem encapsulating the sites and sounds of Spain in the 18th century. I don't recommend that you listen to them at one sitting, but taken individually, there is no music more charming or delicious. --David Hurwitz

Think of it as an investment.......2006-05-22
I bought this set when it came out almost twenty years ago. It was a big chunk of change even then, but I have never regretted it. Scarlatti is the Tigger of music. However low you feel, he'll cheer you up.
The performance? Some say "Scott Ross just plays the notes." Well at least he plays *all* of them, in every sonata, which is more than some contenders can do. This is not easy stuff. I also think he and Domenico are a perfect match. Ross's Bach can feel slightly perfunctory, but to this music he brings a rhythmic panache, superlative technique, period knowledge and "Look at me, Ma" attitude - particularly in those crunchy dissonances that make no sense at all in 18th century musical theory - that fits the bill perfectly. The recording is also excellent throughout, particularly in the later sonatas.
For a completely different approach to this music, I recommend Mikhail Pletnev's set on Virgin. This was originally to have been a single CD, but Pletnev was enjoying himself so much that he just kept on playing. The recording session ended about 3am, and the result is about as close as we're ever going to get to hearing how Chopin - who loved these works, and regretted that his public wouldn't let him program such fusty old stuff - might have sounded when he played them for his friends after dinner.
Sorry it's $800, but it's worth it!.......2006-02-24
Boy, was I lucky to buy this back in 1992. I had followed various other harpsichordists' (e.g., Valenti's) attempts to scale this musical equivalent of Nanga Parbat, and must say, after about 15 hearings of the set, that I am very pleased that Ross was the one who planted the flag on the summit. The only performer I would rather have done it is Landowska. The music is fantastic, with at least half of the pieces qualifying as small masterpieces, and Ross brings out the character of each individual piece with energy and style.
So much bang for your buck..........2001-03-29
Contrary to Leslie Gerber's review, I believe that every single one of these performances is top-notch - pick any disc, go to any single track, and you'll find something well worth a listen! Domenico Scarlatti may not have had the contrapuntal skills of Bach, but his music exhibits a tremendous amount of melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic invention that can be far easier (though certainly no less rewarding) to digest than your typical keyboard masterpiece by JSB. Scott Ross brings all of these pieces to beautiful, shimmering life, and while he may be now dead, these recordings will forever testify to his considerable skills in both interpretation and performance of early keyboard music on a vintage harpsichord.
My only complaint is that the music, or more precisely, perhaps, the instrument on which it is played, develops a certain "sameness" after about 30 minutes of listening pleasure; one can only listen to the tinkling of a harpsichord for so long, IMHumbleO! (And it is a _beautiful_ harpsichord being played!) I have been dousing myself in these discs for about ten years now, as I bought the set just after it was released, and I can honestly say that there's more good music here, and enough musical variety from piece to piece, to keep another music lover just as happy as I've been. Few boxed sets that I've purchased over the last decade (exceptions: Lionel Rogg's Bach organ music and the Borodin Shostakovich Quartets on Melodiya) have had the same staying power that this one has.
A masterwork!.......2000-06-10
This is a delightful body of work, and I must say I am overwhelmed by the variety. I had wondered if 555 sonatas was not a bit much, whether it would all sound alike, but listening to the different pieces I find very little repitition.
There is, of course, a style that is obvious, and recognizable. If I were to qualify this music, I would say that, above all, it sounds like music of a composer who really enjoyed playing his instrument. When you think that this represents about 30 years of Scarlatti's life, during which time he composed almost no other music, you understand that he put everything into it.
He wrote most of these works in Spain, after leaving his native Italy and not looking back. Being a tutor for Princess Maria Barbara of Braganza, his job, it seems, was to write music and teach. What is amazing is that he focused on just one instrument, and just one style, exploring every possibility of melody and rhythm, and never does it sound repetitive.
The works are all very short, the longest being 7 minutes or so. These are not sonatas as we tend to think of the word, as multi-movement pieces built around a specific theme. These are short, concise pieces, where the melody and rhythm speak out instantly. Most of them are binary works, where there is a AABB repeat structure (I am simplifying a bit), and listening to them you can easily hear the structure of each piece.
Many of the pieces are rather fast, showing a certain exuberence, but even the slower pieces, and the few fugues, are energetic in their own way.
In short, this is a major body of work that must be heard. While the 34 CD set is perhaps prohibitive, there is a 3 CD anthology, a sort of best-of of this set (and I have a copy to sell or trade, if anyone is interested). By all means, check out this music.
Great fun!.......1998-12-03
Think of this collection as a huge anthology of short stories, full of entertaining plot twists, character quirks, and other forms of wit. You will not find the kind of serene depth that you would in, say, Bach, but the music is continuously entertaining and the performance is superb.
If you have a CD player in your car, this collection is ideal commuting music: always upbeat, never fades away or blasts you out of your seat (harpsichords are like that), and short enough that you don't have to sit for long in a parking spot waiting for the piece to end. But using these pieces as background doesn't do them justice; they inevetably reward careful listening.

produce sounds in an extrmely diverse fashion-SOLOS.......2005-02-04
Hespos has been kicking around the avant-garde in Germany, well Europe for quite some time now, the early Sixties. He has written incredible swabs mounds of music, his musical language reamins innovative, original,if that word has any context anymore, this is not music to augment the cash box, it is music about timbre and where it goes, how it develops or becomes abandoned, what violence does to timbre, what silence does to timbre, and differing contexts, how a musician responds to making timbre, in fact this music mixes itself cross-fertilizes itself with other disciplines as theatre, for it is difficult to think of the music he creates, that is created from his music without the actor, the actress, So his scores are more like expressive procedures, grids for timbral display, and directions, coaching on how to discover timbre, on how to create art, make art anyway you can, but be interesting. It is assumes in all his work that the full spectrum of timbre, extended techniques are utilized as commonplace, nothing is extended if what is extended is considered the norm, and that's where his music begins, Take "duma" (1980) for alto flute, it begins like an electronic sound, like a gentle motor turned on, we dicover it is a flute harmonic, two tones sustained, then we hear something that resembles water gently coming up from the water drain, or that hasn't quite gone down yet completely. The work proceeds with other "narratives" at work, locomotive tongueing, vocal chatter, spitting into the flute, and then plaintive lament kind of tones held, lonely tones, mixed with slapping the keys, screams at times, percussive effects/affects. The "splash" is a bit more exciting for contra bass and percussion, lots of silences here, but the two musicians take off at times, not over taxing what they got, lots of rhythm dovetailing into each other, fast and it holds one's interest, there is a kind of pointillism still at work here where tones can be tossed anyplace and at anytime, but Hespos finds another contexts for this serious sounding avant-garde stuff, he keeps, well they keep the momentum going. Many of Hespos works are simply written WORD instructions, not real music written on five lines, there is that but he utilzes graphic notation, little black dots, graphics where it is suppose to sounds like ti looks."kitara" is that a another solo, more silences, tapping the body of the instrument, barely audible most of the time, which is the reason why one needs to SEE this music played, there is always a break of silence, with violence in Hespos, and we get that, tones coming from all directions, harmonics, plucked.. A good time for a Hespos piece is about 5 to 6 minutes, any longer and you quite rightly feel the work draining you into a transgressive situation. Hespos has within the last ten years has brached arborescencednced himself out into more theatre where he belongs, as I said, and "opera", tones and words sung and spokem it is not opera."monske" is a lotta fun for mobile tympani, you should take advantage of the fact that tympani drums are on wheels, and in this CD you hear wonderfully the rolling noises which are simply compelling, part of the piece. There are some whipp cracks as well, perhaps the tympani is a "bull" of sorts, great idea for music."leija" the harp solo is ugly-beautiful, where the lower strings are allowed to vibrate against something, the adjacent string or the fingernail, and the tones sometimes are pulled out of tune, it has a "mystery" about it,an attitude as well, playful I would have loved to hear Harpo Marx play this piece."picc" fpr piccolo recorder is "canary-like" more haunting like sounds, perhaps a nocturne here, and the vpoice is utilzed, the voice here representing the basso regions of the piece, another stroke of genius to force this situation.the voice recites fast fragments of non-sense syllables. Again Hespos is playful, light, music the avant-garde for children."cang" is for cymbalom solo, the "hammer piano" prevalent in Eastern Europe, this is a piece you simply wait for something to happen, there are noises occuring but barely audible, the inside of the piano box is utilzes here as well."very different pitches,", "poundings", beginning hardly, observably, extremely powerfully swinging remains very narow, intensive hardly moved almost simultaneous, excessively swift. . . " Hespos instructs. Other times the work sounds like the instrument was dropped. Lastly "Z , , , " is for a pianist but the entire ensemble joins in, in a kind of theatrical non-narrative,lots of nonsense vocables.Solos are where Hespos bears fruit,one-on one.
